T410 enhanced backup using ThinkPad secure HDD 500

The ThinkVantage program is not recognizing this drive when using enhanced back-up and restore.  Drive works otherwise.  Is this a problem with the enhanced back-up and restore, and is there a fix?

I think no one "normally" working will use touch specific elements of Win8! Metro is one part of Win8, but i think normal desktop mode will be preferred by 99 %  of the users.
With the new upcoming Microsoft Surface, touch might work well, but i just don't see myself touching my laptop's screen.

  • Using Lenovo's Enhanced Backup & Restore Questions

    Hi all,
I am wondering if anyone has any experience in using Lenovo's Enhanced Backup & Restore.
My situation is that I am thinking of updating the firmware on my MyDigitalSSD 128GB mSATA SSD to the latest version. However, from what I read, the update will wipe the mSATA SSD. Also, at the moment, I have been backing up my C:\ to an external HDD weekly using Lenovo's Enhanced Backup & Restore software.
My question is if my steps below are workable and if the Enhanced Backup & Restore program will restore my system back to the latest backup?
    1. Use Enhanced Backup & Restore program to backup the latest image of my system.
    2. Update firmware on my mSATA SSD. All data will be wiped.
    3. Use my Recovery Discs to restore the mSATA SSD to Lenovo's factory image.
    4. Use Enhanced Backup & Restore program to restore the latest image.
Any comments, anyone? Thanks in advance!

You can only restore to the same hub, as the serial numbers have to match.

Has anyone here done that ? Is it feasible ? Could a larger capacity drive be installed. Thank you for your time.

    There is a VTL: http://mhvtl-linux-virtual-tape-library-community-forums.966029.n3.nabble.com/
really work well with OSB 10.3.0.3 64bit, the version of it, fully tested by me , is 1.2
The installation guide of it here:
mh virtual tape & library system.
Instructions assume reader is familiar with the kernel build process.
There are two sections of code to build.
    - The kernel module
    - The user-space daemons.
    Kernel module mhvtl:
    ==================
    1) Make sure the kernel-devel package to match your running kernel is installed.
    e.g.
    RedHat AS 4 & 5:
    # rpm -qa|grep kernel
    kernel-2.6.9-34.0.1.EL
    kernel-devel-2.6.9-34.0.1.EL
    kernel-2.6.9-5.EL
    kernel-devel-2.6.9-5.EL
    kernel-utils-2.4-13.1.80
    SLES 9 & 10:
    # rpm -qa|grep kernel
    2) Extract the mhvtl source code.
    # tar xvfz mhvtl-2012-04-04.tgz
    3) Change directory into the kernel driver source.
    # cd mhvtl-1.2/kernel/
    # make
    # make install
    User space daemons:
    ===================
    Pre-req for a running mhvtl
    - sg3_utils (http://sg.danny.cz/sg/sg3_utils.html)
    Pre-req to build/compile userspace:
    - zlib-devel
    * To build an RPM
      ===============
    cp mhvtl-YYYY-MM-DD.tar.gz /usr/src/packages/SOURCE/
    cd /usr/src/packages/SOURCE
    rpmbuild -tb mhvtl-YYYY-MM-DD.tar.gz
<wait for rpm build to complete>
    rpm -Uvh /usr/src/packages/RPMS/<cpu type>/mhvtl-1.2-z.<cpu type>.rpm
(The rpm install will create system group & accounts vtl)
    - Note: For RedHat, replace 'packages' with 'redhat'
    * To build from tar archive (Debian / Ubuntu):
      ============================================
    apt-get install lsscsi
    apt-get install sg3_utils
To limit damage that may occur by wayward daemons, I highly recommend creating
a group and user called 'vtl'
    # /usr/sbin/groupadd --system vtl
    # /usr/sbin/useradd --system -c "Vitrual Tape Library" -d /opt/vtl -g vtl -m vtl
    Now build user space daemons:
From the parent directory where you extracted the source.
    # cd mhvtl-1.2
    Build the binaries
    # make
Install the rc script into /etc/init.d/ and binaries to /usr/local/bin/
    # make install
    Start daemons:
    /etc/init.d/mhvtl start
    Test:
Note: Make sure the 'mtx' & 'lsscsi' utilities are installed
The virtual devices are attached to HBA #5 in this example.
    e.g.
    # lsscsi -g

  • How do I copy a TM backup to an external HDD with an existing TM backup (for another machine)?

    Hi,
My question relates to the use of Time Machine for two different Macs ... I have two Macs: a MacBook Pro (ML) and an iMac (SL). I use Time Machine for both.
Unfortunately, the external HDD (A) drive I use for the backup of my MacBook Pro is on the way out. I am now in a situation where I need to copy this Time Machine backup to another external HDD (B) which I use for the backup of my iMac.
I have decided that I would like to use external HDD B for all future backups of both machines from now on. It is a 2Tb LaCie drive with one partition. Therefore, I would like to copy the Time Machine backup data from external HDD A to external HDD B. Since both TM files/directories have identical names, I am looking for some advice of how to do this without 'deactivating' any of the backups or corrupting them, or screwing with permissions.
In case this is known to be problemmatic, would it be 'better practice' to partition the external 2Tb HDD drive into two partitions, then just use one partition for each backup? Is there an advantage/disadvantage to partitioning the drive? Will this approach make it 'less confusing for Time Machine' and reduce potential problems?
    Any advice would be great!
    Thanks,
    Mark.

Don't bother trying to copy a TM backup file. Just connect the other good drive to your MBP and create a new full TM backup on that drive. I do suggest you create a separate partition on that good drive for each Mac you will be backing up to it.

  • How to restore from Time Machine when backup is larger than HDD

In an attempt to upgrade my 13 inch, 8GB 2010 MacBook Pro (750 GB HDD) from Mavericks to Yosemite, the Yosemite install was stuck at "about a minute remaining" for hours (overnight).  So I cancelled the install and tried again only to be stuck at the same spot.  I took the mac to an Apple Genius Bar to have it looked at while it was stuck at that install step.  They couldn't fix it and did a fresh install of Yosemite.  Luckily, I had backed it up about a week before, so I wasn't losing a whole lot.  I attempted to restore from the Time Machine backup using Migration Assistant (2TB external USB 3.0) of the latest backup but the estimated time to restore from backup kept climbing to more than 150 hours.  Eventually it had an error message that there wasn't enough free space on the HDD (the same 750 GB drive that my backups were from).  There was less than 100GB of free space on the HDD before attempting the upgrade.
How can I restore at least a portion of my Time Machine backup, like my Documents and Apps?  I don't even mind going back to Mavericks so that I can use my computer again!  For example, I need MS Office but I cannot use it on Yosemite if I do not first get my original backup working again so that I can unregister the current version (the product key is "lost" with my inaccessible backups!).
Most of the information I can find online is how to prepare for a proper backup, but at this point since Apple Genius did a fresh install, Time Machine has my only backup!
    Any advice would be great!
p.s. This may be useful to know:  I had several virtual machines from Parallels: Windows, Ubuntu, etc before I upgraded to Mavericks from Snow Leopard.  Mavericks required an updated Parallels that I never got but I'm sure those VMs are hiding in my backup drive.

OS X Yosemite: Restore items backed up with Time Machine
While in Time Machine, press the key combination shift-command-C. The front window will show all mounted volumes. All snapshots should now be accessible. Select the one you want and navigate to the files you want to restore.
If you need to restore from a backup of the hidden user Library folder, first select a snapshot, then press shift-command-G. A Go to Folder dialog will open. In it, you'll enter the path to the folder. The dialog will help you by automatically completing the parts of the path when you start to type them.
The path begins with slash character ("/"). Enter that. The rest of the parts will be separated by slashes.
The next part is the date and time of the current snapshot. Enter a "2", and the rest of the date should be filled in automatically. Press the right-arrow key to jump to the end of the path. Enter a slash to start the next part.
Next is the name of the volume (usually "Macintosh HD" unless you gave it a different name.) Start to type that, then jump to the end and enter a slash.
The next part is "Users", followed by a slash.
Next is your (short) user name, which is also the name of your home folder.
Finally, enter "Library", then press return. You should now be in the Library folder. From there you can get around as in the Finder.

  • Can I cut/paste my backups to an external hdd and then back to my mac?

Ok, here's my issue and I'm sure I'm not the only one.
I have an iPhone6 and my wife has one as well, and we both have iPads.
I have to backup all of these somewhere, and my current device is a Macbook Pro with 250gb SSD.
As you understand, backing up so many things in so little space it almost renders my Macbook useless.
I have read some advice about using sudo commands to make iTunes store the backups in an external hdd.
However, I am not an experienced mac user, and I do not trust myself doing something like that.
What came to my mind, and that's what I want your opinion upon, is the following.
Something that I used to do when I was using a windows pc to keep many different backups, rename them etc.
As far as I understand, when I plug in my iPhone to my Mac, iTunes recognize the device and the last backup of that device.
Then, by pressing "Backup to my pc etc" it only updates that backup and rewrites on it.
    My questions:
I backup my iPhone then quit iTunes.
I remove (cut) the backup folder (the one with the huge weird name from the directory library/application support/mobile sync/backup/0604f04blabhblahblah) and paste it on an external hdd where I have tons of space.
When I want to backup my iPhone again, instead of creating a whole new backup that would take a lot of time, if I take the backup folder that I had stored to that external hdd and paste it back to its original place (the directory I mentioned above), will iTunes recognize it and update and rewrite on that backup?
And then again move it back and forth from my mac to my external hdd.
    And something even more important.
In case something happens to my iPhone (it falls from the 10nth floor) and I buy a new one, will I be able to "restore from backup" using the same method I mentioned before? Will iTunes recognize the folder?
Sorry for the long text and any mistakes but english is not my mother tongue and I wanted to make sure I would be clear about my questions.
My current backups use more than half of my 250gb internal SSD and along with some apps and other stuff I cannot get rid off I am left with only 50gigs of space which is terrible.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If I have iMatch can I move the music files to an external drive and then play the music off the cloud? This way freeing up space on my hard drive? If so how?
You can move the iTunes library to the external and use it there.
Copy the entire /Music/iTunes/ folde rto the external.
Hold Option, launch iTunes, select Choose library... and select the iTunes folder on the external.
iTunes will use the external for everything. You can delete /Music/iTunes/ folder.
FYI: The iTunes media folder is not the (entire) iTunes library.

I backup to an external hdd with Time Machine, when it ran out of space it did not delete old backups, now my internal hdd says its full when before it had heaps of space. I have searched for extra files but cant find any. Can anyone help, please.

First, empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. Then reboot. That will temporarily free up some space.
To locate large files, you can use Spotlight as described here. That method may not find large folders that contain a lot of small files.
You can also use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one.
Proceed further only if the problem hasn't been solved.
ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
Install ODS in the Applications folder as usual.
Triple-click the line of text below to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means.
When you're done with ODS, quit it and also quit Terminal.

    Hi,
    Thanks for the quick response.
I have been looking at the post but i found one of the forum post in which the person was saying the SQLAuthentication doesnt work ..
"Be wary when using ADF Security (OPSS) with a SQLAuthenticator.
This is feedback I got in SR 3-4124753004 :
"If the you want to use DB as the identity store, then the supported way is to buy OVD server license and configure DB adapter in OVD and then configure an OVD authenticator in Weblogic. SQLAuthenticator will not be used as identity store. And, we do not recommend to use LibOVD for DB identity store. OVD server is the recommended and supported way."
    related bugs are :

Also, is there any specification about the user permissions and about how the backup should be run?

    Hi Lars,
I understand that its a clumpsy over here, but i already have raised an OSS message and SAP said, that they cannot support this issue with backint. If you can provide me with an email id, i can send you the log files which would be easy to read.
My issue is that am not able run backup for maxdb of content server 640 using the backint tool.
I have created the configuration file and the parameter file as per the specifications from http://maxdb.sap.com/doc/7_7/a9/8a1ef21e4b402bb76ff75bb559a98a/content.htm and http://maxdb.sap.com/doc/7_7/50/075205962843f69b9ec41f34427be7/content.htm.
THe server is registered to the TSM server. Now when i run the wizard to take the backup using the backint tool, it gives the error "Begin of output of Backint for MaxDB (/tmp/backint4sapdbCFC.out)- -

Waiting for kind reply ... ...You must not use or treat Expdp or logical backup as the Backup which can be used for future purpose. Please search forums their are so many links you lan find out and so many people told many time.. even ORACLE suggest that.
Go for Custom backups and RMAn backups.

  • Using a security group to add members to the collection question

    Hi,
I have a collection created in SCCM 2007 that is using a security group for membership. So I added a computer to the security group in AD but when I go to SCCM and click on the collection I dont see the computer in the collection. Should it show here or
because it is a security group based membership will it not show the members?
    THanks!

Details from Active directory are added to SCCM database through discovery methods. Please ensure that AD security group discovery and AD system discovery are enabled in the primary site. If they are enabled, check the frequency set for these discovery
methods. Once you added these computers to the AD group, you need to wait till the next discovery cycle before it appears in SCCM collections. Till that point, SCCM database will not have information about the group memberships of these computers

  • Copy Time machine backup using a different Mac

A friend has a Time Machine backup from an iMac that he sold some time ago. He's concerned that the drive might fail so wants to make a copy of the backup, but doesn't have a Mac at the moment. So he'd like to use my MacBook to copy his backup drive. The backup is about 400GB, my HD is 256GB and he'd like to copy it to a new 1TB drive.
All the answers that I can find to similar questions assume that the Time Machine backup belongs to the Mac making the copy, in this case it doesn't. So is there a way to copy a Time Machine backup using a Mac that wasn't used to create the backup?

    Hi ozRob,
If you would like to copy an existing Time Machine backup from one drive to another, you may find the following article helpful:
