T420 unknown driver

Hello,
my Win 7 64-bit on a T420 lacks four drivers, and I don't know which one. Unfortunately, the product number of this Thinkpad is not to be found on the software/driver support site (which is kind of odd) and also not supported in IE9 automatic product number determination. So far all drivers from the next lower product number worked. The remaining devices I did not find a driver for are:
Base System Device
PCI Serial Port
PCI Simple Communication Controller
SM Bus Controller
Does anyone know which drivers I need and what these hardware components are?

Unknown driver missing can you please tell me how to enable it

I have got an Advent 7096 and the 4 USB`s are not working I looked in the device manager and I noticed an UNKNOWN

First try to run Windows update and check the optional updates.
If no driver is distributed through Windows Update, you should contact the manufacturer or vendor of the hardware to supply the correct driver.

In case none of these yield results, it might be worth investigating what chipset is used in the laptop and checking with the chipset manufacturer whether they have a driver available.
note that many manufactureers will remove support for the Windows XP models as XP itself is no longer supported by Microsoft.

My HP 1210xi will not re-install from disc or online, says unknown driver, what do I do

My HP 1210xi quit scanning and when I went to online help I was told to re-install printer., Un-installed it and now it will not go on the computer at all, just says can't finish installing because of unknown driver. So I went online, downloaded the software and driver on computer and it said the same thing. I know the printer works because I can still copy. Anyone have any suggestions, I can't afford a new printer as I am retired and on limited income.

I have the Windows Installer Clean-Up screen up and tried to upload a screen cap for you, but IE immediately shuts down every time I try. So I'll have to transcribe the screen for you:
I see the following:

Those are the top two lines. The following lines after that are programs he has installed on the machine like Acrobat, Adobe, Autodesk Inventor, and such and they all have a name and program number in brackets.
And I now again have the obligatory Apple programs installed and listed again:

(All Users) Apple Mobile Device Support [3.4.0.25]
(All Users) Apple Software Update [2.1.2.120]
(All Users) Bonjour [2.0.5.0]
Please note that iTunes is NOT LISTED.
Everything else 'appears' to be normal, I'd say.

RAID Missing/Damaged Unknown Drive

I have a RAID mirror that had a drive go bad. I replaced the drive, but now the mirror reports a ghost drive that is missing or damaged but with a Device Node of Unknown.
I used diskutil checkraid and get:

This is the results after attempting to remove and add both good drives from the RAID. With the mirror degraded like this I can't properly monitor the RAID. The RAID is functional, just not monitorable.
How do I get the Unknown drives to go away and put the RAID back into a normal on-line state.

There are several different chipsets that support port multipliers. A 4 port PM capable host card will support up to 20 drives, while a 2 port supports up to 10. The 4 port cards are usually significantly faster performers. Most any card that states it supports port multiplier will run most any port multiplier enclosure.
At the enclosure end I have only ever seen Silicon Image or Marvell chipsets used. And either SIlicon Image or Marvell based host card will run either of them.
That said, it is always possible you have something I have never seen or tested. Without details on the enclosure all I can do is guess or just tell you is get a PM capable host card and hook it up. Or you can pull the port multiplier board out and read the chip info off it.

Where can I download the video driver for T420s for Ubuntu 10.04?

Just a clarification, I am looking for the drivers for Integrated Display on Lenovo 420s Core i7. This computer has the nvidia optimus option. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

ThinkPad T420 Hard Drive Size Descriptions

I have just bought a pre-owned T420 still within its warranty and restored to factory settings. It was sold to me as having a 320GB drive. Windows shows the main C Drive as having 232 GB free of 280 GB with 5.67 of 15.6 GB free in the Lenovo Recovery area.
280 plus 15.6 = 295.6 GB.
Is it normal for this to be described as 320GB ?

Oook ! I have just Googled this - and it seems to be perfectly normal.

Does anyone know if the latest T420s ThinkPad has a 2.5" hard drive or a 1.8" hard drive size?

You will need a standard 2.5" wide SSD that is 7mm thick. Older SSDs are 9.5mm thick.
In some cases these 9.5mm drives are made from a 7mm device to which a 2.5mm spacer has been added. You can usually remove the spacer, however, with some manufacturers that could void their warranty.
Also if I remember correctly your T420s has a SATA-II interface. You can use a SATA-III SSD but it will run slightly slower at SATA-II speeds.

My T420 has an item in the Device Manager that I can't find a driver for. It's called the "Base System Device", and it has this hardware id: PCI\VEN_1180&DEV_E823&SUBSYS_21CE17AA&REV_05

On my Lenovo T430 this device turned out to be a Ricoh PCIe SDXC/MMC Host Controller. There seems to be a few hardware versions though.
This driver worked for me fine: http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/ds014960
But I also found these two other that did not worked for me but are listed as similar devices. They also share the same hardware ID:

T420s hard drive noise / speed /battery life trade off and Screen Roll Cage Info

I know this is a brand new laptop but has anyone over at lenovo spent enough time with both the 7200 rpm and the 5400 rpm version of the 320GB hard drive in this laptop? I am trying to decide between ordering one and would like to get the 7200 rpm but I really dislike hard drive spinning noises in quiet environments. I am currently using the t400 with the 5400 RPM 320Gb drive (which I realize may be different from the drives in the new t420s) and do not find the noise objectionable but would like to get the 7200 in the t420s if there is no noise penalty and very little battery life penalty. Also, does the T420s have a "screen" roll cage like my current T400. I had heard that the T410 did away with the screen roll cages....

The T420s's rollcage is made of a hybrid carbon fibre reinforced plastic. It's not metal since that interferes with the wireless signal.
It's apparently a bit better than the one the T510 has right now (which is the same carbon-reinforced plastic)- and the T410, with a "weaker" roll cage, should pass a 1.6 metre drop anyways.
I can vouch for that plastic's use since you can step on another laptop who's lid (I'm pretty sure it's made from this) is made from that (an old 600E) and it will survive.
Also, the noise isn't all that different for 5400 RPM vs 7200 RPM. The fan will be louder if you are using it.
And if you really hate hard drive sound and want a bigger boost than just an RPM bump, consider an SSD. That'll blow any hard drive out of the water in terms of speed, but will do the same to your wallet if you need anything larger than 40-60 GB. And, if you choose to do this, be aware that the T420s only takes SSD's that are 7mm high- so you'll probably need to get an X25-M or Intel 320 to accommodate that.

T420s wireless driver problem - after restore/reinstall

i have a 420s that works fine.
but something went strange with the wireless after one of the updates, not sure if it was windows or lenovo update.
in any event, i tried reinstalling the driver, and it stayed broke. so i rolled back the computer to a week or so earlier.
this fixed the wireless, but broke a few other applications not lenovo related.
after manual updates on those programs everything works again.
so fast forward to today. i did the lenovo update, and it decided that it needed to update the intel wirless driver package, since it was never installed. **bleep**? but i figured how bad could it be, AFTER i set a new restore point, so the only thing that would get restored was the wireless if it went strange on me.
after the update, wireless broke again. not entirely sure what was wrong, but it just didnt work right and wouldnt connect or see some known access points.
question; what is the proper method to completely deinstall/reinstall the wireless drivers and 'access connections' on this computer so that everything works properly?

hey markgca,
try uninstalling the wireless driver. let windows install its own generic drivers.
test again with the generic drivers.

my finger print reader is not working and i have tried the downloads available on hp website and many other but its not showing in the area where we configure the passwords for the pc

Unknown drives popping up

I've recently started having an error dialogue box pop up when I select my alias to open Bridge. I saids that it can not find the application because it has either been renamed or moved. But when I click OK Bridge is operational. I didn't anything of it and just created another alias and that seemed to solve the problem. Then it happened again and I know I did not rename or move the application. I clicked on my computer tab and noticed a drive and a folder that looked like a .dmg drive. I shut down immediately. It happened again after I recreated the alias. I've since been running Bridge straight from the application folder and so far, nothing has happened. Has anyone run into this issue?

Missing unknown driver

I upgraded and performed a clean installation of win7 from vista. From 32bit to 64bit.
There's a problem with one driver it says:
