Table of Contents-Automatic Headings

This is what I plan to do, but I need your help. I have a document, which already has subject headings. I typed them in free-style in the document. These headings are reflected in the TOC, as I use the TOC as a guide to write the document. There are no connections between the TOC headings and the ones in the document (no numbering or hyperlinking). The headings in the TOC have a numbering system (such as 1., 1.1, 1.2, 2. and so forth). This is what I want to do. I would like Pages to take each TOC entry (e.g. 2.1 Cardiac Insufficiency) and assign the same numbering system (as in the TOC) as well as hyperlink the heading in the document (2.1 Cardiac Insufficiency). Remember, there is no connection between the two now. Could you walk me through the process.

I take it that the TOC you've created is manually created . . .
You've essentially worked your document backwards since Word Processing programs (or any word processing programs I am aware of) are designed to create the TOC based on the numbers already in the headings rather than to take the numbering system FROM the TOC and then apply it TO the headings reflected in the TOC. I believe you'll have to number the headings and create a new TOC.
An additional problem is that Pages heading styles and numbering do not play well together. So you may have to manually number the headings before generating your new TOC.
Nonetheless, I would try the following:
1. Put your cursor on the first instance of the top level heading style. Let's call it "Heading 1."
2. With the Styles drawer open, right click (or ctrl-click) on Heading 1 and choose "Select all uses of Heading 1."
3. Using the Text Inspector, go to the List Tab and choose 'Tiered Numbers.' The indent level should be set to 1.
4. Back in the Styles drawer, right click (or ctrl-click) on Heading 1 and choose 'Redefine style from selection.
5. Repeat steps 1 through 4 for each heading that appears in your TOC, but at Step 3, change the indent level to the next level.
6. Put your cursor at the top of your existing TOC and generate a real TOC using Insert>Table of Contents or using the Document Inspector.
This process assumes a legal style numbering system (1, 1.1, 1.2, 2, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.3.1 . . .)
Good luck,
Terry

You can download the trial version (http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/acrobat-downloads.html) to convert the PDF back to WORD if you do not have the original. The conversion may not be perfect, but it is typically better than starting from scratch. You may be lucky and get a good result. You might check the settings (in the save screen) to try retain format versus retain text flow. The format version can be a pain to edit since it creates a bunch of text boxes. The flow version may require you to reformat in WORD, but you likely would want to do that anyway.

  • Problem with automatic table of contents Level headings

I am having trouble with the Table of contents in Adobe Indesign. When I create my automatic table of contents one of the Level headings that is supposed to appear under Chapter 1 instead appears under the Introduction heading. On the actual page where the heading paragraph styles have been defined the 2nd Level heading is as it should be underneath Chapter 1. So what I end up having to do is move them manually in the TOC. But I don’t want to have to do this and it would be great if Indesign instead did the automatic table of contents correctly.
I wonder if it has anything to with the fact that our template is set up with headings (that sit outside the body text to the left) as text boxes which we place inside the main body text box (they have anchored object settings on them so the heading sits off to the side).  Whilst the anchored text box is exactly in the right sequence, maybe indesign senses and reads the anchored text box last?
I have an example of the file and the problem that is occurring in the pdf, it can be downloaded from:
Is there a solution to this?  If anyone has any ideas I would be very grateful.

I've been playing with this for a while, and quite honestly I don't understand why it's doing things the way it is. It's working correctly on Page 11, which seems to me to have exactly the same structure, except for the subtitle. It also works correctly if I copy the frames from page 14 and paste into a new doc.
Things I tried that did not work: Export as .inx and move the pages to a new doc. You might try copying the text and pasting into a new doc.

  • Synchronize Table of Contents Automatically not expanding TOC tree

Users tell me that some years ago context-sensitive help would expand the TOC tree and select the target topic. Current behavior (RH9) is the "book" is selected but not expanded.
Is there some way to get the old behavior back?

Does it mysteriously begin working after you have had it open for a while?
I ask, because the default setting for WebHelp is that the navigational elements are broken into smaller chunks during the generation process. And it's not uncommon for the TOC to fail synchronization early when opening the help but begin working later.
To change that behavior, one needs to enable the speed setting of "Local PC or Intranet" as shown below.
*NOTE: Click the image below for larger and clearer view.
This causes the TOC, Index, Glossary and Search to be contained in larger single files. The trade-off is that it takes longer for the TOC, Index, Glossary and Search to appear, but the TOC synchronization typically then works.
    Hope this helps... Rick

  • Displaying pagenumbers in table of contents in the 2nd page of a smartform.

We have a requirement where we need to display "Table of contents" with headings and corresponding page numbers .The page numbers for the headings need to be picked up at run time. But the "Table of contents" is in the second page whereas the headings appear in the later pages. So it is difficult to display the respective page numbers. Can anybody give me a solution for this.

    Hi.
    Perhaps you could try this.
In the main window: When you print out the heading you can get the page number you are currently on. Save that number in a table/structure for each header.
Then on the second page you could have a "Late processing" window and print your headers with the page numbers you have stored in your table/structure.
I think this will work, or at least give you a clue on how to do it.

  • Table of Contents with same image on every chapter?

When I started my book, the Table of Contents automatically took
the main image of every chapter, and added it in a smaller size to
    my contents pages. Quite nice...
But now, my Table of Contents has the same image on every page.
Where did I go wrong, and - more important - can this be restored?
    TIA - Stefan

Not sure what you did, but you can re assign connection between the chapter images and the TOC image if that connection gets lost (by deleting the place image place holder on the chapter page in the layout pane etc.)
click on chapter in layout pane and select image (or insert a new one if it was deleated) in inspetor assign it "main image"
then on the TOC page click the master image place holder and delete the image(place holder will not be deleted)
makes sure there is not an image ontop of the place holder.

  • Acrobat XI PRO: Create a Table of Contents (TOC) automatically in top, after I have combined several pdf.files into a single pdf.file

    Hey
I have now tried for hours, but now I give up!
    MY WISH -
Create a Table of Contents (TOC) automatically after I have combined several pdf.files into a single pdf.file.
I have already bookmarks, shown on the screen (see screenshot below) but I want those bookmark to be visualised in a separate TOC in the top of the combined files.
This new TOC (which I have inserted) shall be printable and serve as a cover page in a binder.
I have seen other cheap pdf.programs in the market (e.g. PDF Converter Professional 7.3) which are able to make the above things, easy, fast and nice.

  • Problem with automatic table of contents in latest Pages 5.1

So here's the deal. I'm using "Bottom text" to automaticly put page numbers on each new page, But I don't want page number on the cover (page 1) or on the introduction page (p2), so I write something else in the bottom text there, and them simply click "start new bottom text here" on page nr 3 (the page where I have the table of contents). This way I get page numbers on all future pages but no on the two previous ones, but the problem then is that the headlines from earlier (the introduction) is left out from automatic table of contents. I tried experimenting, and if i chose "start new bottom text" on page 4 (the one after table of contents) all headlines from there on out disappears from table of contents. How do I fix this? The thesis I'm writing is going to be very long, and I really don't wanna have to do table of contents manually. I also can't have page numbers on the introduction page as this is a major exam thesis and it needs to look very professional and excellent, because my whole grade is depending on it.

An interesting bug, if that is what it is.
It could be you have simply chosen a Section T.O.C. which only does a T.O.C. for the section it is in.
Try adding the initial unnumbered pages as manual text before the T.O.C. starts.

  • Sections and Automatic Table of Contents

    Hello there,
I have encountered a problem with InDesign while trying to make an automatic TOC for a journal I am working on. It has something to do with Sections.
So I have a book with several indd files. The very first indd file is called "frontpages" which includes the cover page, the inside cover, the leaf page, then two facing pages for the table of contents, then followed by the last page (Letter from the Editor).
This is followed by my second indd file called "newsbeats" which has 5 pages.
Now, what I wanted to do was mark the frontpages' page numbers using lower case roman numerals (i, ii, iii, etc.) Of course I do not want to include the cover page and the inside cover, so I want to start (i) with the leaf page, (ii) and (iii) marks the table of contents pages, and finally (iv) for the Editor's Letter. I did this by starting a section at the leaf page, START PAGE NUMBERNG AT: 1, and selecting the (i, ii, iii...) option. It worked, while leavingboth the cover page and and the inside cover with markers (a) and (b), which I previously set (because I do not know how to just get rid of the page number...)
Now, my book pages actually starts page (1) in the first page of the "newsbeats" document. So to do that, I made another section on the newsbeats first page, START PAGE NUMBERING AT: 1, and selected (1, 2, 3...). That works, too.
So at the moment, I have 3 sections to my page numbers: 1) the lower case letters (a, b) section for the cover page and inside cover, respectively; 2) the roman numerals section (i, ii, iii...) for the leafpage, table of contents, and Editor Letter; and lastly, 3) the arabic letters (1, 2, 3...) starting from the newsbeats document all the way to the last page of the last indd of my book.
Hope it is clear enough. Now here comes the problem:
When I try to create an automatic Table of Contents, it correctly finds my chapters (i used the style for each journal article's title) and lists them. The problem is, the page numbers do not appear correctly. Instead, it shows "a" on EACH AND EVERY table of contents ENTRY. I tried some trial and error, and found out that the pages shown (a bunch of "a") is actually the COVER PAGE'S (a) page number....
I tried for hours searching on topics like "Sections and Automatic TOC" or "How to selectively choose which pages to include in a TOC".. But I found none.
Your help would be really appreciated. I can easily manually type the page numbers (my journal only has 9 articles), but I wanted to do this in a very systematic way, so it would be a lot easier if in any case, there are more than 9 articles for next year's publication.
    THANK YOU SO MUCH!
    - Larry
PS: I attached a file showing the generated table of contents (on the ii-iii page that I wanted it to appear on), with the frontpages page panel, which shows the page numbering as well. Also I included the Book Panel, so you see how the pages are set up.

We definitely experienced the same issue. Seems like pages just get lost. This is the approach I took:
On the groups main page we just added a link called 'View All Articles' wrapped in a h1 tag (to make it very big and visible to the user) using the following url:
    search/?q=%20
The resulting page will search for every article with a space in it and return the results. Still not the most elegant solution but it works. I'd like to implement it right into the xsl file but haven't found very much documentation to aid in this.

  • Table of contents - title creates automatic page break

I want the title "Table of Contents" to appear above the automatically generated Table of Contents in pages.  The TOC covers 3 pages (it's a long document) and I've formatted it and am happy. However, the title for the page which reads "Table of Contents" makes the TOC jump down to another page leaving the title on an otherwise blank page.  I have tried re-typing the title, ensuring no page breaks are on the page. I've deleted the TOC and reinserted it at the appropriate place etc. But it keeps jumping down and starting on a new page.  Any advice appreciated. I want to the keep the title "Table of Contents" on the same page as the table of contents themselves.

I am having the exact same issue. Long ToC (3 pages), but cannot place a simple headline above it. It automatically breaks the pages and starts on a new page. Any ideas people?
Please see the picture below. I cannot find a way to narrow down that gap between headline and ToC.
    Cheers Phil

  • Bookmarks are not automatically creating based on Word 2013 Table of Contents.

Bookmarks are not automatically creating based on Word 2013 Table of Contents.  In older version of Word, the Style built Table of Contents converted into Bookmarks when PDFing.

I figured it out.  There is a new checkbox you must turn on in Word 2013 when export to PDF that allows it to convert items to Bookmarks when PDFing.

  • Automatically create table of contents

    Hi,
Does acrobat have a way of automatically generating a table of contents?  I'm guessing not, but my boss asked, so I want to confirm that 'no' is the correct answer.  I'm not talking about bookmarks.  I mean a page at the beginning of the doc.  I know Word has this feature.
    Thanks!

Does acrobat have a way of automatically generating a table of contents?
    No.

  • [Pages] Indent sub-headings table of contents

    Hey.
In Pages I'd like to indent my sub-heading in my table of contents.
I've searched the complete internet but cant find what I'm looking for. In Microsoft Office Word this is very easy.
I'll try to explain what I want to do.
Currently in Pages I have my table of content like this:
    Heading Name.......................1
    Heading Name.......................3
    Sub-Heading Name................3
    Sub-Heading Name................4
    Heading Name.......................6
    Sub-Heading Name................3
    Sub-Sub Heading Name..........4
But what I'd like is this:
    Heading Name.......................1
    Heading Name.......................3
         Sub-Heading Name...........3
         Sub-Heading Name...........4
    Heading Name.......................6
         Sub-Heading Name...........3
              Sub-Sub Heading Nam.4
Can anyone tell me how to accomplish this?
    Thank you in advance.

Click on the subheads in the T.O.C. and drag in the left indent on the Ruler.

  • Headings in tables are not shown in table of contents

    Hi,
When I place some text bound to the Heading 1 style inside a table, it appears that Pages cannot scrape the heading from the document when generating the table of contents... any ideas?
    Cheers

If you read carefully the User Guide you will see that TOC apply only to the document's text body.
It's why it doesn't apply to
    Layout documents,
    tables,
    text boxes.
_Go to "Provide Pages Feedback" in the "Pages" menu_, describe what you wish.
Then, cross your fingers, and wait _at least_ for iWork'10

  • How to Create a Table of Contents From an Imported PDF File?

I have imported a 150 page PDF file into inDesign 5. I want to create a Table of Contents for my document, but there are no paragraph or heading styles in the document. If I built the document in inDesign, I would have labeled each chapter "Heading 1" and then instructed inDesign to collect up all the Heading 1s and make a TOC automatically.
But I didn't create this PDF, it has no formatting at all. Its just been placed in the inDesign document space.
Anyone have any tips of how I can pick out all the Chapter headings.....they are in a distinctive format (14 point bold) from the rest of the document text.
    Anyone?

InDesign cannot read *anything* out of a PDF file.
Open in Acrobat, copy heading, paste in InDesign. Repeat until done.
