Table of Contents Bug?

I downloaded a trial of CS 6 recently and for the first time today I tried to make a table of contents. I've really never had trouble with this tool but in CS6 something strange keeps happening. I have styles applied correctly—I've double checked—but when I try to pull them into a TOC it doesn't work. I can view them in the Table of Contents dialog box and I put them in to the 'Include Paragraph Styles' column. It reads through my very long book and then at the end only pulls from the first couple documents in the book.
Honeslty, I'm stumped. I've tried it a couple times different ways and the same thing's happened. Has anyone else had this problem?
Backgroud: I'm using a macbook pro laptop running Lion. My book is a complicated 150 page class manual so there's plenty of other possible problems that could be causing this but I can't find anything.
UPDATE: I think I've fixed the problem, but I'm not sure so I'm going to leave this in case someone else has the same thing happen.

Hi Peter,
I didn't resolve the problem yet. But I discover that the TOC is indexing by the number of the pages.
I created one more title in another page (in red) and the items goes to after the item that I create. See it:
I don't know the reason too.

  • Preview bug regarding Table of Contents and Annotations

I'm involved in a paperless pilot project and am having a difficult time circumventing an issue in Preview.
I'm re-formatting material for executive meetings from WordPerfect, Word, Excel and PowerPoint into bookmarked PDF format in Adobe Acrobat Pro X. When they are opened in Preview by senior management on MacBook Airs, the Table of Contents links everywhere correctly. However, the moment they add an annotation (in this case, notes), the table of contents is thrown one page off, regardless of their place in the document. Even after removing the note, the table of contents does not revert to the proper place. I'm assuming this occurs because the annotation throws off the markers from the imported bookmarks.
Using Acrobat Reader on the Airs isn't an option since annotations aren't possible. We are also really trying to keep production of the PDFs limited to Acrobat Pro to ensure cross-platform compatibility of the Table of Contents.
Has anyone else encountered these issues? Is there a potential workaround?

A lightweight alternative to Acrobat Pro for creating a TOC is PDFOutliner ($5 on the Mac App Store.) Adding annotations later to the PDF does not affect the TOC generated by PDFOutliner.
Note: I am the developer of PDFOutliner.

  • Bug or am I doing it wrong? (Table of Contents)

One table of contents works fine for my thesis, but then I try to add a list of figures. I insert the table of contents, the instant that I change anything about it in the Inspector, the first table of contents gets changed too. I can't figure out how to disjoin them, they are obviously two different objects, but the Inspector seems not to be able to tell them apart.

Pages appears to allow a single, unified TOC. I think Apple Feedback would be a good place to go to ask to include a feature that allows separate list for tables, figures, charts, etc.

  • Span columns problem with Table of Contents order

    Hello,
I'm having a strange issue with headings that span columns and Table of contents order. My document has a heading paragraph in a coloured box, which is then inserted in-line into a 2-column text box. The paragraph style for the box (set to in-line) is set to span all columns, so that the 2-columned text doesn't get messed up.
When I create a table of contents, the Heading style that is inside the coloured box is being picked up fine, but even though it is inserted before the headings below it, it is showing up after the level 2 headings, instead of before.
I have confirmed that the insertion of the blue bar is before the text below it, as when I remove the span columns option, the TOC works as it is supposed to. Is this a bug?

Hi there, thanks for the reply.
The only way I could move the inline box to the left was to make a custom anchor and change the X value, this did not affect the TOC unfortunately. I also checked the location of the invisible marker indicating the location of the inline text box, and it is definitely before the heading that follows. I confirmed this by removing the span columns option for that paragraph, and the TOC displayed properly after doing that, meaning there is likely some problem with the span columns option not properly recognizing the order of content.

  • Table of Contents and Section Numbering ??s

Hi, we are using CS6 and have a couple questions about trying to use automated section numbering and table of contents in a single document. We don’t do this often (actually, never used auto-TOC before), so I just want to see if I’m missing something obvious.
SECTION NUMBERING WITH SECTION INTRO PAGES
Our document (a style guide) is divided into sections. Each section begins with a section intro title page, which is basically just a blank page with the new section’s title nicely styled. We are setting up our sections as 1, 2, 3, 4, etc. And we would REALLY prefer for the page numbering to be ’1.0, 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, etc.’, where X.0 is the section intro page.
    1) I can add the sections OK with a prefix of 1., 2., etc. But InDesign does not allow me to start the section numbering at ’0′, it must be ’1′. So my intro pages HAVE to be 1.1, 2.1, 3.1, etc. instead of 1.0, 2.0, 3.0 etc. Any creative workaround to solve this??? We really don’t want the intro pages to be X.1, as they have no content and we want the X.1 page to be the first with content on it, NOT X.2. How do people generally handle a section intro page?
    AUTO PAGE NUMBERS AND TOC
We are trying to use the automated Table of Content feature and running into an odd issue. We have page titles on top of each page in a unique paragraph style (H1). We are adding the page number at the beginning of this paragraph using ‘Type > Marker > Current Page Number’ and a unique character style. It’s working fine on the pages, showing the appropriate section numbering we setup for the document (e.g., 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4, etc.).
But when we make the table of contents, the ‘page numbers’ at the beginning of the titles are coming in as absolute numbers (e.g., 7, 8 , 9, 10, 11, etc.) instead of our section numbering. I checked the General Preferences, and it is set to ‘View: Section Numbering’. And when I exported an interactive PDF, the bookmarks also add the absolute page number at the beginning of the titles as in the TOC. But if I set the TOC to include page numbers automatically, those DO display correct section numbers (they just precede or follow our titles with the incorrect numbering).
    2) Any ideas why the TOC and PDF Bookmarks would be picking up absolute numbering while the actual titles on the pages show the proper section numbering?
    THANKS!

    Peter Spier wrote:
I've never tried adding a second marker to a paragraph like that. Why not use a numbered list instead?
Just checking in here. Not sure I understand what you mean about using a numbered list. Do you mean instead of the page numbers in the titles, or instead of the Table of Contents? Not sure how either could be automated to stay in sync with adding/removing pages and creating the TOC links and bookmarks in our PDFs.
    - Is there a bug when the TOC pulls the specified title paragraphs and they have page numbers in them?
Thanks. Still trying to see if we're doing something wrong as this is the first we've played with TOC.

  • Acrobat X, Word 2011, and Links in Table of Contents

I have a 300+ page document in Word 2011, with a Table of Contents that has been automatically generated by Word, based off headings.
When I "print" the document using "Save as Adobe PDF" from the Print dialouge, the PDF comes up, but the links in the ToC no longer work.
I've looked online for a solution, but I am noticing two things:
    1) The option to turn the ToC links into Hyperlinks is not present on the Mac version of Word (2011).
    2) I opened the file in Word 2010 on a PC, and enabled the above feature, and then brought it back to my Mac and Word 2011 - the links now seem active in Word.  However, when I convert it to PDF, the links still do not work in the PDF.
Is there an automated way to make the links convert, or to add them to the PDF?  With 300+ pages, a Table of Contents with working links is almost essential for navigation.
    Thank you!

That's a defect (bug) in Adobe(Mac) that has been going on for 15 years and Adobe refuse to admit it and fix it. In Reference to Links.
The only work around is to use iWork's Pages.
The links should be active. Then Create the PDF from there The links should be live.
I've heard you can do the same thing with Preview, But haven't tried. I know Pages will.
Its no wonder that Apple won't allow Flash on the iPad. Besides not fixing Flash issues on the Mac paltform, They have a history of refusing to fix problems with Acrobat on The Mac Platform.

  • Problem with automatic table of contents in latest Pages 5.1

So here's the deal. I'm using "Bottom text" to automaticly put page numbers on each new page, But I don't want page number on the cover (page 1) or on the introduction page (p2), so I write something else in the bottom text there, and them simply click "start new bottom text here" on page nr 3 (the page where I have the table of contents). This way I get page numbers on all future pages but no on the two previous ones, but the problem then is that the headlines from earlier (the introduction) is left out from automatic table of contents. I tried experimenting, and if i chose "start new bottom text" on page 4 (the one after table of contents) all headlines from there on out disappears from table of contents. How do I fix this? The thesis I'm writing is going to be very long, and I really don't wanna have to do table of contents manually. I also can't have page numbers on the introduction page as this is a major exam thesis and it needs to look very professional and excellent, because my whole grade is depending on it.

An interesting bug, if that is what it is.
It could be you have simply chosen a Section T.O.C. which only does a T.O.C. for the section it is in.
Try adding the initial unnumbered pages as manual text before the T.O.C. starts.

  • Table of Contents bookmarks not exporting to PDF (CS5)

I have a 200 page book made up of 15 documents.  I've created a table of contents based on paragraph styles and the TOC generates and formats correctly.  When I create the TOC, the Create PDF Bookmarks box is checked.  When I export the whole book I've tried it with Create Tagged PDF checked and unchecked.
After I export to PDF from the Book palette, the TOC items are links (at least they give me the pointer-hand icon) but they don't go anywhere.  The only one that does is the one in the same document as the TOC.  (I have tried the TOC both within a chapter and also in it's own document with no other links in it).  The behavior is the same in the Bookmarks pane - all are shown but only one works.  I've looked at several of the bookmarks' Properties > Actions.  It says its "Going to a page in another document" > (document-name-of-the-correct-chapter-but-with-pdf-instead-of-indd.pdf) > Page 1 (this is correct) > Zoom level: actual size.
This isn't right - it's pointing to an imaginary pdf that doesn't exist.  It should be pointing to page X in the current document.
    Here's what I've tried:
    * restarting InDesign
    * restarting my machine
    * deleting the TOC and regenerating it
    * generating the book with all documents open or all documents closed
    * moving the TOC to its own document
    * probably some other things I've forgotten in the struggle
All of the links and references in the individual documents are good.
I've looked around these forums and this seems to be an ongoing and unsolved issue for other folks using older versions.  This is the closest I came to finding an answer but ended up with an Adobe employee logging it as a bug in 2009.  Bookmarks not exporting from InDesign to PDF in CS4                     By (c_goates)
So here's hoping there is some new information.  I've been trying to get this to work for far too long and don't relish drawing bookmark boxes around all 55 of my text links.
    Specs: Max OS 10.6.6, CS5 (Version 7.0)
Sorry this is so long, but details help, usually.  Thanks in advance for any advice.

There are some known problems with bookmarks and CS5 as well. As far as I know, the 7.0.3 update won't fix them, but it does solve some other problems, so you should install it.

  • I can't get the page numbers in my table of contents to update when I update the book.

I'm using Framemaker 11 and I have two TOCs in my book: one in English and one in French. Each TOC links to different documents in the same book. The reference page for each TOC is set and correctly displays the heading 1 and 2 I've told it to display, but the numbers do not update when the content in my document files changes to a different page. I've checked the conditional text settings in my document files; they are correct. When I update the book, I choose to update Numbering, All Cross-References, All Text Insets, OLE Links, Generate Table of Contents, Lists, and Indexes. What am I doing wrong? Thanks.

I just tested this out and saw the same result as Rick - a book with child books ignores all generated files within the child books. This applies to adding content from them (e.g. their titles) to actually including them in the output. This applies to all versions of FM since v.9!
However, there is a workaround for this. You need to use the hierarchical book structure in the parent book and create Folders for each book that you want to add. Then manually add the generated files (TOC, IX, List of..., etc.) and book to the respective folder. This is what it looks like for two child books in a parent book:
Note that the child book generated files (TOC, IOR) show as just regular files at this point in the parent book. To get the page numbering to be continuous throughout the parent book, you will need to make a couple of passes. First set folder, files and books to have the Numbering continue from the previous (if you want all sequential page numbers). This will set the page numbers correctly except for what they were in the respective book TOCs. You will need to use the starting page number of the child TOC files in each folder (it shows in the Book status bar when click on the TOC file in the master/parent book).
To set the individual book TOCs to be correct in the parent book, open the child book and set the TOC Numbering to start at the page stated in the parent book (status bar). Now update the child book to set the correct (parent book) page numbers in the child TOC. [This is a necessary manual step, as the page number assigned in the parent book is ignored when th child book is individually updated and FM uses 1 to start off the sequence in the child book.]  Repeat for each child book in the master/parent book.
The final step is to Update the parent book and create the PDF. You should now have all of the files included in the PDF and the child TOCs should show the correct page numbers of the master book.
This whole process of books within books seems a bit borked and one shouldn't have to be jumping through hoops to include child generated files. Please report this as a bug via: https://bugbase.adobe.com/index.cfm

  • Table of Contents links and hyperlinks lose accuracy in FP past 5 pages?

I've come up dry searching for any mention of this bug
    anywhere.
We've got Word documents that have a table of contents (TOC
created dynamically in word, using the standard "Heading" style
method.) When we convert these to Flashpaper SWFs, about 50% of the
TOC links don't work - they go sort of nearby spots in the
document, but bring you to a spot off by half a page or more. The
links to spots in the first 4-5 pages work ok, but TOC links that
go deeper into the doc - from 5 to 20 pages in - those are off by a
half page to a page. The working TOC links in Word or in PDF
versions of the doc take you directly to the right spot.
The "outline" option in flashpaper also fails - the outline
links past 5 pages or so are innacurate just like the in-document
    links.
According the the (scanty) documentation for Flashpaper,
Heading/Outlines, etc. are supposed to work fine and get converted
    into the SWF.
I've already tried creating fresh example files, to make sure
it isn't a problem with sloppy Word formatting, extra Headings,
etc. - no dice. I still get TOC and outline links that fail to work
in many cases. They mostly fail for things that jump to spots after
5-6 pages into the doc. But if I convert these same docs to PDFs,
the PDF bookmarks and TOC links and hyperlinks work perfectly.
We've also tried using Hyperlinks in Word to create "pretend"
Table of Contents (not dynamic, but we're desperate), and we find
that those hyperlinks that go past 5 or 6 pages into the 20 page
doc lose their acuracy also - they are a half to a full page off.
We already tried the method of saving the word docs as HTML
then converting to FP(suggested within this board) but that did not
    improve things.
    Thanks in advance.
    - Chris

We solved our issue. In our case we have Word 2007, but our
client is still on Word 2003 so our Word document was originally
created in Word 2007 and then converted by Word 2007 into the Word
2003 format. It appears that we were having these problems because
we were running Flashpaper on the coverted Word document. A
document converted this way is internally different than a document
created by the Word 2003 application.
To fix the problem we downloaded the Word 2003 application,
created a new Word 2003 document, copy and pasted the contents of
the converted Word document into the document created on Word 2003,
and then ran Flashpaper on the new Word 2003 document. Problem
    solved.

What version of ID are you using? What export settings? As noted above, there is a bug, and what you want may not be posible at the moment.

  • Linking to PDF Files in the Table of Contents

I know there is a way to link directly to a PDF file from the table of contents, but it is beyond me. Anyone know how to do this?
    Thanks, Kathy

    Hi Kathy
It's probably advisable to first add the PDF as a Baggage File. Then when you are creating the TOC entry point, you point at the Baggage File.
If that wasn't what you were hoping to see, you could also do it by simply linking to the PDF as you would a Web Page by specifying the explicit URL that would open the same file if you were doing it using a browser.
    Cheers... Rick

  • How to remove the bookmark from the table of contents?

Hi everyone, I have a question:
How to remove the bookmark from the table of contents in Captivate 6?
    Regards...

Doug, your frustration is making you "bug" gun trigger happy. LOL
    LOL, I suppose I have.
I believe the answer you are looking for is in the publishing preferences: under LMS advanced settings, look for the option: never send resume data.
[can someone please confirm this - I am not at a desktop now]
Anyhow, selecting this option will stop resume data - so the lesson will treat even returning learners as new. Hopefully, this will work for you.
    This works! Thank you again!
*but* Why isn't Captivate asking the learner to make the choice of whether to start over or resume. It does this correctly if the lesson is published stand-alone.
    Thanks again!

  • Table of Contents CS3

    Hello All-
I am having trouble with my Table of Contents displaying properly. First off I downloaded the 5.0.4 update. Is this the one that fixes the indexing, TOC bugs??
Alright, I have a document with character styles applied to the header of each page. PAGE HEADER style. When I create the Table of Contents under the layout option I am successfully able to create a TOC formatted with dot leaders etc. However, I only get about half of my pages. I'm not sure why only half would be displaying when all of the headers are linked to the same character style.
    Any thoughts?

I fixed the Table of Contents to display all of the headers. Turns out only half were on the Paragraph Style and half were on the a same named Character style.
    Thanks!

  • Table of Contents Not Picking Up HEADER text

I have a number of sections in my Pages 5 document. I have unique headings in the Header for each section and have applied a paragraph style to these - HEADING 1. However none of the HEADING 1 headings are appearing in the table of contents. I have HEADING 1 ticked in the TABLE OF CONTENTS window on the right hand side of the Page 5 window.
It feels like a bug or does TABLE OF CONTENTS not pick up paragraphed style text from the header?

    Very odd!
Seems Pages 5 all you do is chase rabbits down rabbit holes.
I like being able to do T.O.C.s for every section but with all the other downgrades in Pages 5 it isn't worth fighting.
Pages '09 should still be in your Applications/iWork folder and just works, much better than its "upgrade".
Wait for Pages 5 to get out of beta and rate/review it in the App Store.
