Take a number from a given level in another list

Hi there. I'm quite confused about this topic, and I couldn't find anything basically because I don't know what to search for.
I'm working on a "short" document with sections, subsections, subsubsections with relatively few text but lots of figures. I've been asked to make it a single document, not a book with multiple documents. The problem is that when I start working on figure numbering, I need to follow quite a peculiar scheme. As I said, I have a three-level document structure:
1. Section
   1.1 Subsection
      1.1.1 Subsubsection
      1.1.2 Subsubsection
   1.2 Subsection
2. Section
   2.1 Subsection
and so on and so forth. The point is that my figures need to be numbered by section.subsection.progressive, per example the fifth figure in subsection 2.1 should be numbered 2.1.5.
Now, simple question: is there a way to accomplish this with plain InDesign (not using additional plugins?)

I'm not particularly expert at lists, but I think this is doable by defineing a new list for each sub section, if no other way, and adding the preliminary numbers and other text you want, like Figure:
You can't see it, but there's a space included after the # in the number string.
The downside of this is I think you'll need a new paragraph style for each subsection to hold the correct new list, but they can all be based on one master style so you only need to change the list, or edit the master to cange the other font specs.
