TC & Linkys together for Wifi Network?

Ok so I have a wireless router (a 2.4GB) Linksys WRT54G hooked up to the cable modem in our house on the first floor. I use a hardwire ethernet cable to connect that to my G5 iMac. I just recently purchases a 1st generation 500GB Time Capsule. What I would like to do is put it upstairs so that I can hook up my old iMac g4 (the one that looks like a lampshade) and my wife PC laptop using a ethernet could up there. So I want the wireless network downstairs to connect to the TC upstairs to accomplish this. I;ve been trying for hours and can't seem to get it to work. All I get is a yellow blinking light. Can anyone show me how to do this? or is it not possible?

Creating a Wireless Distribution System (WDS), aka, extending a wireless network wirelessly between an AirPort and a non-AirPort product is extremely limited. Meaning that very very few devices are WDS-compatible with the AirPorts ... other than other AirPorts, of course.
The Linksys WRT54G happens to be one of those very few, but to date I am only aware of folks who have been successful in setting up a WDS between the Linksys and the older 802.11g AirPort Express Base Station. If you do a search on the Internet, using terms like: Linksys AirPort WDS, you will find at least a dozen articles of folks who have had success doing so.
There are also a number of Apple Discussions treads on this as well.
Here are a few to get you started:

o Linksys WRT54G and WDS

  • MBP Retina "wake for wifi network access" while on battery power?

I have USB printer connected to Airport Express, and i can print from iPhone using "Printopia" while MBP on, but cannot print when the lid is close (sleep mode) & unplugged, so is there any way to activated "wake for wifi network access" while on battery power? Thanx...

    Hi,
I am coming from the MacBook faction, but there were similar posts in there, regarding at least your picture#2, the vertical colored lines.
The consensus was (and I cannot write from own experience here, just relaying the message) that this has something to do with system parameters. To rewrite these parameters, one has to set a different screen resolution than the current one and save the settings and then go back to the old resolution again and save the settings as well. We were told, this would prevent the colored vertical line issue, at least for the MacBook.
Worth a try, it is easy enough to do.

  • What should the"default behavior" be for WiFi network connections?

I Have been able to at least temporarily fix the plethora of problems encountered after downloading Mountain Lion to my 2009 17" MBP just ten days ago.  Thanks to the time and effort of so many posters that are much more savvy than me, I successfully executed the steps suggested in many of the posts and with good results.  It surely beats running down to the Apple store and being told that I am the only one with a problem.
Okay,  I've  realized that I don't really know what the default behavior of the WiFi network connection should be?
    Specifically:
Should the Wi-Fi drop down in Network always be" looking for networks", even though I am obviously on my Network?
Should the Wi-Fi be connected at all times even when your computer is in sleep mode- or deep sleep mode?  There have been so many problems with Wi-Fi dropping off, slow or hanging loads, etc.
I unchecked "ask to join networks, in Network preferences thinking it might stop looking for networks when it doesn't need to because I'm already on mine.  I do see my neighbors (four neighbors) in the drop down in Network.
How do you get into Time Capsule's settings, to check speeds, especially ping?  What should the ideal settings be?
How do you know if your DHCP license is renewed? I've heard that feature isn't working and may be the culprit to some of the Wi-Fi problems.
I'll look forward to your help in understanding more about this.  I've been in the support  area a lot lately, I've read plenty of definitions, and explanations of the different options to choose from in Apple's support area, but nowhere have I seen anything that explains what the default behavior should be or perform  like.
    Thanks, as always.

Generally, you don't want to tweak the wifi settings. It pretty much takes care of itself. The caveat to that is, of course, if you're experiencing problems.
The 'looking for networks' behaviour only happens when you log in, wake the mac from sleep OR when you click on the wifi icon. You clicking on it tells the mac  "I want to see what networks are available" - so it does a scan for you to check to see if any new networks have appeared since you last clicked on it (or woke/logged in). In short, if you don't want it to look for new networks, don't click on the icon!
Unchecking the 'ask to join networks' option only applies when your mac detects a new network (such as when it wakes) that you haven't already authorised; it'll ask you to confirm whether you want to join it or not. Otherwise, if the network is open it'll join automatically. You should keep this selected if you travel around with your Mac. It's a good idea to know what network you're on before you start plugging in passwords or typing other things into the mac.
There is a utility that you can use for ping and traceroute called 'Network Utility'. Click on the Spotlight icon in the top right of your screen and type "Network' and you should see it at the top of the list. Hit 'return' to open it.
DHCP licences are normally renewed automatically by your router every 24 hours. Again, there's no reason to be messing about with that unless you're experiencing problems.
If you're experiencing wifi dropout, let us know, and we'll make some suggestions, but if you're not, you're best leaving your mac to manage the background processes. It knows what it's doing!

  • I am unable to change username and password for wifi network

unable to change username and password for wifi network

Thanks, this solved my problem. Network kept demanding username; I guess it's different from the computer ID I use. Whatever, it wasn't easy to find the network listed, but by trial and error, I found it, highlighted it, and pressed delete key. Now the network only asks for password, which I knew, and I'm on. Great advice. But why computer was configured to do that in the first place is why I prefer PC to my wife's inscrutable macbook pro.

  • Why is my iPhone 3G be refusing to search for WIFI networks?

I tried hooking up to my home WIFI network this afternoon. Put in the name and password and pressed go. I got a message that said "Could not scan for networks." Why is that?  BTW, it has hooked up in the past. Thanks!

I solved this problem by turning the phone off and then back on.

  • TS1398 I can't get the authentication page to load to input a username for wifi network

I can't get the authorization page to upload so I can enter wifi network username & password

Using what version of which browser?
iCloud.com requires Safari 6 or later, Firefox 22 or later, or Google Chrome 28 or later. Have you tried all of those?
If you have, have you tried clearing your browser cache and cookies?
For the first tine since 1989 I'm thinking about buying a PC.
You'd have exactly the same problems on an 8 year old PC too. It's a bit unreasonable to expect such an old Mac to continue to be compatible as software is constantly updated.
Saying that, I'm still able to access iCloud.com successfully in Safari v5.0.6 on a PowerPC Mac running Mac OS X 10.5.8, so the problem you're having is likely to be a browser issue, not something inherently wrong with the computer.
Since all this crap started, Mail won't download my Mac.com or me.com email.
The iCloud.com website is totally unconnected to Mail's ability to download email via IMAP. Have you checked the mail server settings are correctly setup and up-to-date?

  • Unable to scan for wifi networks in iphone 4s

    Hi ,
My Iphone 4s is unable to scan wifi networks ...it always show searching but never dispaly any available wifi networks ... i have tried all resetting the network settings ...tried manual also, but while searching it shows could not scan for wireless networks ...Could any one help me to resole this issue

If no change after resetting network settings, try restoring your iPhone with iTunes as a new iPhone or not from the backup.
If no change after that, the iPhone has a hardware problem.

  • After I factory reset my Iphone 4s, I can't finish the step where it ask for WIFI Network, I guess it don't detect WIFI and can't connect to iTunes also. What should I do?

I can't finish the step after I factory reset my iphone 4s because I can't get thru with the CHOOSE YOUR WIFI NETWORK

If you can't see your WiFi then is your router broadcasting the SSID or do you not get to that point?

  • TS1398 Where do you get passwords for wiFi networks that pop up under "choose a network"? When I tap one it asks for a password. When I tap "join" nothing happens (join is also faded).

How do you find out who is operating a network and how do you then contact them for a password?

    Copied from my previous post.
If you don't have access to an available wi-fi network - one that is password locked/protected, you can't join that network - not unless you know the owner of the network and the owner gives you permission to access the network, which means giving you the password for the network.
If the wireless network is not locked/password protected, you should be able to join it. If a free public wi-fi network, many require agreeing to their terms of use which is done via a web page with Safari. A free public wi-fi network at a restaurant that I frequent requires logging in each time with a website provided - without a user name and password. My iPhone connects to the network automatically but I won't have internet access until I login with the website provided automatically with Safari.

  • Internet sharing via dongle, how to set password for wifi network created?

I am using a USB dongle with my Mac book Pro to share internet through AirPort, so that i can access my mac book's wifi from my iphone. This works great, but it is an open network and I woud like to set up a password.
If anyone can point me in the direction I would be very grateful!
    Thanks

If you are using OS X's Internet Sharing feature, then you can configure wireless security on your Mac's internal AirPort Card but are limited by the OS X version that you are using. It was not until Mountain Lion that Apple provided WPA2 security. Prior to this only WEP was available.
You configure Internet Sharing via System Preferences > Sharing > Internet Sharing. (I don't have 10.6.x on any of my Macs so this may be different for your case.) Once you configure what is shared, you can then add wireless encryption.

  • Can't retype password for wifi network

I mistyped my wifi password while it was on Set to remember password so now I can't go back in and change the password. I tried going in network and deleting it but that didn't work. Then I tried removing it from my keychain but it said "invalid record was encountered."  I then tried to get keychain first aid to fix it but I couldn't even find it. I have a MacBook Pro version 10.8.5. I could really use some help.

Sorry, that's not a Firefox support issue. It has to do with your router.
Try using this forum for help with that. http://www.dslreports.com/forum/wlan

    Hi 21saz1987,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that your iPhone is not locating any Wi-Fi networks and know situations with Wi-Fi connectivity can be frustrating. I understand that you have already performed some troubleshooting but the issue has not been resolved. In this situation I would recommend working through the troubleshooting steps in the attached article.

  • Problems with wifi networks, need a fix in new iOS 7 update.

Can Apple make a new feature for Wifi networks that has a button for disconnect from this network in new iOS 7 update? Because it irratering me when you want to disconnect from iPhone to iPad shared wifi network, you have to delete the network or it will be stuck for forever until you turn it off on iPhone. So long i know iPad is affected to this, but it can happen to iPhone too.
And one more thing, I want to have a device list that you can kick them out on only shared wifi network like iPhone to iPad.

Unless I'm missing something obvious, can't you just turn on Airplane mode? Or maybe just turn off Wi-Fi on the device if you need cell access to remain enabled?

  • Does iPhone transmit when looking for WiFi?

    Hi and thanks for reading,
probably this is an obviou question since it is related to the basic of wifi hardware but I did not manage to find anything official on the internet.
When I put on WiFi feature on my iPhone/iPad, it starts searching for WiFi networks every 3-5 seconds.
I am wondering if, during a WiFi search, the searching device transmit any data packet or if it stays all the time in RX mode.
If you can help me, a link to an article/paper about that would be much appreciated.
    Many thanks.

There are many programs that will trash a TX - those that aren't specifically written for an NVFS type Palm. Here's a list: http://palmfacts.com/devices/tx/software.php
Did you HotSync the information from a previous Palm to your TX? That will surely scramble it! You'll need to do another Hard Reset, rename your /BACKUP folder to something else, and then do a HotSync...

  • Imac failing to see any wifi network

I have an Imac which is just over 6 months old (purchased December 2011) running LION, it has been connected to our wifi network since we set it up and there have been no problems, the mac has also been able to see other wifi nextworks available in our area.
A few days ago the Imac suddenly had no wifi and on turning the WIFI on and off it became apparent that when it scans for wifi it can see no wifi networks at all.
I have rebooted the machine and the router etc to no avail and all other Macs, phones and ipdas etc are able to see and use the wifi network successfully?
Has anyone had this problem? is there anything more I can do before I box it up and take it into the Mac Store to see an expert?
I assume its a hardware failure?
PS I have connected the mac with an ethernet cable and that works fine, its just not able to see any wifi networks.
    Regards
    Dave

    Hi!
I bought my imac 21,5 before 2 months after all lies from people dont understanding computers.
Yes, I have exact same problem. I am using safari then suddenly the wifi is off. And it scans for wifi networks but it cant find any networks. I am using my old pc now and writing this post. If I restart the imac the wifi gets normal and i can see my network and other networks.
I have applecare too, 3 years. But i dont know what to do. If you ask apple they will told you "the problem is unusual, or they will told you its not usual that people get problem with mac. If you ask mac users, they will told you "you never get problem with mac" BUT THEY ALL LYING!
(i have other problems too with my imac. sometimes when the screen enter sleep mode I cant turn it on with the magic mouse or keyboard. I can only turn it on with screen-powerbutton then after maybe 10 sec the login-screen turns black. then I start the screen again with screen-powerbutton the screen turns black again.etc.)
Of course it is hardware issue (I am expert user of pc) but the problem is Apple dont want to belive that a mac can get problem. And people using mac are afraid of the word virus or computer problem therefore they buy from Apple.
