TCP or UDP for chat client?

Which is the best method of creating a chat client?
Should I use TCP or UDP
UDP seems like the best way to broadcast but TCP is more reliable.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Well, for just a chat client, you don't need either - because there is no communication. But I'll take it that you want to implement client/server communications - a chat application.
The answer is: it depends on how much work you want to do.
o UDP is very low level. You can send and receive datagrams, and the rest is up to you. Example: Do you care if messges get lost? Do you care about really long messages? If you use UDP, then you will have to implement those things you care about yourself.
(Haven't really thought qbout multicast for a chat system. Might work, and then UDP is your only option.)
o TCP lets you send and receive messages point-to-point; no messages will ever be lost, and you can send large blocks of data.
However for both UDP and TCP, you have to invent most of the application-level protocol your self.
o Another option that a lot of people choose is RMI. This allows you to concentrate on application design, and not worry - theory anyhow - about much communications design. (Reality is somewhat otherwise, because RMI is very fussy to get set up to work properly.)

I am making my own simple chat / messenger service to use between a couple of friends over GPRS.
On the server side i have made a multi threaded TCP server that opens a new thread for each connecting client and stores these socket connections in a hashtable for access to send data between each thread.
So when a client logs on to the server, the server sends a printwriter message to all other clients informing them of what client connected, and the clients can put the username in its out-database. then the clients can send messages to each others using a simple, self build protocol.
All connection between clients/server happens over a simple printwriter on in/out streams.
Problem is: it works perfectly most of the time.... However, sometimes a message is mysteriously lost when transferred from the server to a client. Transfer from client to server works flawlessly. I am thinking that it might have something to do with the client side threading, or slow network transfer casuing a TCP read error.
Client structure is as following:
start-> Midlet class -> (press connect to server) -> new Client class (impl runnable) -> new thread(this) -> void run() sets up all connections and writers, waits in a while loop for messages from server and takes action according to message type. -> Button(send) uses output stream to send a message to server.
Do anyone have any suggestions on what I must consider when making a client that will simultaniously be able to listen for data from server as well as send data to server over 1 socket and slow mobile connection without causing any trouble?

i recommend using a StreamConnectionNotifier connection instead of just a socket connection. you could send your data (xml/plain text) just like a stream (tcp ofcourse). if you want to know how to use a StreamConnectionNotifier connection, here's how

Skype for Linux Listens on TCP and UDP 5744

Hello all, I'm guessing that there's a simple answer to my inquiry that I overlooked in my web searches. I'm running the current version of Skype for Linux (which, as of this writing, is 4.3.0.37). While looking at my computer's running processes, I noticed Skype listens on ports TCP/5744 and UDP/5744 while logged in, allowing it to be a server for some sort of inbound connection. I cannot find any documentation or IANA port registration for Skype, so I posted in the community forum. Does any one know why Skype listens on those ports; and would I have an improved user experience if I permitted my firewall to allow inbound connections on those ports? Thanks!

I've observed this: When I first logged in, I received an inbound connection on the TCP port from a Skype server (determined by Reverse DNS) that was repeated on regular intervals. On the UDP port, I saw what appears to be 'heartbeats' sent out from my Skype client to IPs residing on rather 'prestigious' networks around the World (no more than 50), with those hosts responding in turn. Now, both TCP and UDP connections have continuous activity, so much so, I recorded at least 4GBs of data being transferred in the course of eight ( hours. That equates to 2GB in both directions, bring the total to (at minimum) approximately 568 kb/s connection (factoring in other observations, giving approximations and not providing specifics). I want to note, this additional traffic is appears to be experienced by any client without a firewalled connection to the Internet. I'm now trying to understand how this additional traffic assists in the functioning of the Skype client. Thanks, all!

OK, you are possibly confusing things. UDP is part of TCP/IP. Could it be you are trying to multicast using TCP?
This is not possible. TCP is a connection based protocol, meaning any connection is established between exactly two partners, starting out with the three-way handshake, the data transmission and acknowledgments, and the connection tear down. This ensures complete delivery verification of all communications at the expense of the protocol overhead. (similar to a classic phone connection between two people: First you verify the right person picks up, then you talk, then say goodbye)
UDP is a connectionless protocol, meaning any packets are simply placed on the wire and the protocol itself does not ensure any verification of delivery (similar to e.g. a radio broadcast). Any two-way communication needs to be done by the program, e.g. the receiver could send another UDP packet back to notify the sender that a packet was received.
Broadcast and multicast packets must be connectionless. There is no way around it. You can use UDP for broadcasts and TCP for for data at the same time in the same program, but you cannot combine the two into a single connection. They don't mix.
Maybe I misunderstood. If I did, please clarify what you had in mind. More details!

Is there a chat client for the iPod Touch or iPhone yet? I already know about Meebo and JiveTalk which allow me to chat on all the major clients, Yahoo, MSN, and AOL. But how about a standalone app?

AnyConnect error " User not authorized for AnyConnect Client access, contact your administrator"

Hi everyone,
it's probably just me but I have tried real hard to get a simple AnyConnect setup working in a lab environment on my ASA 5505 at home, without luck. When I connect with the AnyConnect client I get the error message "User not authorized for AnyConnect Client access, contact your administrator". I have searched for this error and tried some of the few solutions out there, but to no avail. I also updated the ASA from 8.4.4(1) to 9.1(1) and ASDM from 6.4(9) to 7.1(1) but still the same problem. The setup of the ASA is straight forward, directly connected to the Internet with a 10.0.1.0 / 24 subnet on the inside and an address pool of 10.0.2.0 / 24 to assign to the VPN clients. Please note that due to ISP restrictions, I'm using port 44455 instead of 443. I had AnyConnect working with the SSL portal, but IKEv2 IPsec is giving me a headache. I have stripped down certificate authentication which I had running before just to eliminate this as a potential cause of the issue. When running debugging, I do not get any error messages - the handshake completes successfully and the local authentication works fine as well.

Communication between Windows 7 and Windows 8(and above) using Sockets(TCP and UDP)

I need to use TCP and UDP using Sockets to communicate between two(or more) applications installed in Windows 7 and Windows 8.
Is it possible.? I tried within a LAN, but in vain. If needed I would post the appropriate code.
Note: I only tried running exe(s) in these machines and not with installation.

It is not clear what develop language you are using, here are examples which uses the C# based on .NET. It created the communition between two machines by using sockets with TCP protocol, a server and a client:

Setting up BCM 7.0.6.100 Internet Chat Client

Hi, everyone!
I've been struggling with a weird error message when setting up the proof-of-concept chat client for BCM 7.0.6.100
What I did is set up a fresh system from scratch and configure it just enough to conduct tests. After that I installed the chat client onto the same machine.
Now the problem is that whenever I rty to initiate a new chat I get the following error message:

Updated to Adobe Muse 2014 this morning and have worked in it for the last 8 hours. Now when I try to publish the updated site to Business Catalyst for my client to preview it crashes everytime. I have tried just publishing altered files only, then tried the whole site again, and then tried publishing as a new site altogether. Thought I would then try to export as HTML in the hope of uploading the files via an FTP client and Muse crashes and locks up again. I am extremely stressed about this as I am in the last few days of of website I have been working on now with no issues since December. We are due to go live and my client needs to see it. I am desperate for an answer. It is not looking good. I am on an Apple Mac and have not had any isses publishing it for the last 6 months. Not very happy to say the least. Need desperate help.

Hi Zak, I got onto Adobe Customer Care Live Chat this morning and gave them the error message. After some trouble shooting with them it appears the older archived file of the site still publishes. I have now reverted back to the old file and copied and pasted out of the new file and from some ideas given to me by support I am now able to publish to Business Catalyst. It seems there was something corrupt within the new pages added yesterday. I have no idea if this would have still happened if I hadn't updated but I am glad it wasn't a Muse specific problem. I am loving using Muse and the support from Adobe has been excellent. Thanks everyone. By the way I do love the new version and apart from this hick up that lost me a few hours, aged me some more and gave me grey hair I really love Muse. Thanks again.

Multiple chat clients with Webcam support

I switched to the mac and i was wondering if anyone knows a program that will let me connect to Yahoo, MSN, and AOL at the same time and use multiple accounts. I also want webcam support. Currently i use different programs and i would like to be able to chat from one program instead of 3. SO far i have found aMSN, but only works for msn and not the other chat clients. Anyone can help?

It handles like 6 different IM clients.... not sure about the video capabilities, but i use iChat on an AIM client for that.

When I tried to access to the offer a messaged shows telling me that I have to ask the experts to check if I fulfill the requirements, but there´s no way I can contact any expert, since the number you provide is only for US clients, so I feel as if Mexico is a no man´s land.

You can open a Chat session, if need be they will give you a number. You are allowed only one special. Either the Photography Plan or the 29.99 CC plan (and it that price is just for the first year).

Chat client Help

I am writing a chat client in java and I was wondering how to change the color of the text for each person. What I mean is is it possible to have the text from one user display red and the text from another user display blue. Any help would be nice.

Is there a way to format text with html using JEditorPane and/or JTextPane; Read the API. You will find links to the tutorials.

Chat clients and iSight

microsoft messenger for mac doesnt support iSight. yahoo does. wat other chat clients support iSight?

I was going to suggest AMSN. It works well and I use it as my default messenger. Its does video, but is not as good as MSN for the PC.
I now use SKYPE most of the time. This supports video very well and communicated with PC users fine.

I have about 30 Apple TV Units and our IT Director will not allow the appropriate TCP and UDP ports to be opened on the district WAN. When our teachers try to log on to Apple TV to broadcast lessons, websites, etc., they are booted off the network after about 20 minutes.
Any ideas for how I might solve this without having to hard-wire the Apple TV Units?

Honestly, you do not.
Either the IT director will cave and allow the appropriate ports or it doesn't work.
Hard wiring the ATVs will not rectify the problem.

UDP server and client

I have some problems with making the udp server and client. I must receive acknowledgement and if it will not come in timeout, I want to resend the packet... But I don't know how can I go to another state, when program is waiting for acknowledgement...
