TDMS error -2503. Is seemingly corrupted file able to be recovered?

We performed a rather expensive test with multiple instruments and gauges on a specimen and recorded the data to a TDMS file. Before we performed the test, we recorded to a "dummy" tdms file for a few minutes and then reviewed the file to confirm that we were recording all the gauges properly. Everything was fine and we knew we were ready to test.
We then recorded during the test and the TDMS file ended up being about 400 Mb. After recording we attempted to open the file and recieved the following error:
"Error -2503
Possible reason(s):
LabVIEW:  Specified file does not comply with TDMS file format standards."
There is no record of this error on the forums or anywhere on the website. The data is there, the file is huge. We just need to figure out how to recover it. This data is very important to us. Is there any way to analyze the tdms file and recover the data?
Any time we attempt to open the file in any way we receive the same error. We have tried opening it with the TDMS Excel Importer, Open TDMS file.vi, TDMS Defragment. No luck. The error seems to be occurring in the open tdms file.vi.
The file is very large or I would post it here. Please help

I solved the problem.
I was trying to figure out which part of the tdms file was corrupt. I was preparing for a long day of altering bits/bytes to fix the corruption, which I have done in the past and is never fun, but it wasn't necessary. Using a file analyzer (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/filealyzer/index.html) I could see that the data was there and the headers were correct throughout the data in the tdms file. There didn't appear to be any wierdness in the beginning or end of the file. This told me that the problem was probably in the index file. I had been reviewing the new advanced tdms VIs in LabView 2010 and was looking for something that could help me. The Advanced TDMS Open.vi mentioned that it deleted the index file and opened the tdms file. I thought perhaps it would recreate the index file. It didn't. The tdms index file was automatically recreated when I opened the the TDMS file and it recreated it properly. The data is there. The file opens properly this time. All is well. It definately leaves me wondering what created the corruption in the first place and how to prevent it in the future.
Solution:
Delete the tdms index file. The TDMS Excel Importer will recreate the index file properly when you open the file. The file opened with no errors for me.

    Hi,
Are you trying to build a CIN or a DLL? If you are buildinga  DLL, be aware that "a few of the steps necessary to create a CIN are not necessary in creating a DLL. Notably, the DLL does not need to link against cin.obj or lvsb.lib. Also, the build does not need to include the execution of lvsbutil.exe. However, be aware that functions specific to CINs (such as SetCINArraySize) will not work in a DLL."
    Hope this helps.

  • Error 344:  itunes.exe - corrupt file

New ipod30, error message 344, itunes.exe-corrupt file, plus "file or directory \ipod_control\music corrupt or unreadable. Please run chkdsk".
Is this telling me to chkdsk/defragment my ipod? Defragging my hard drive didn't fix it.

Yes, you need to run chkdsk on the drive letter
allocated to the iPod and you need to use the /F
    switch, for example:
    chkdsk <iPod drive letter>: /F
    Hope that helps.
    Hi Bill,
I am having the same problem with my nano,(after updating iTUNES), how do I run the chkdsk? Is it in the itunes window or where? • TDMS Error -2503 at Open TDMS

    Hi everyone,
I'm facing a wierd error since yesterday.
I'm recording data on a PXI using the Embedded Data Logger Custom Device (VeriStand), before yesterday,
I was able to retrieve the TDMS File (.tdms file only, not the .tdms_index file) and open the file using TDMS File Viewer or DiaDEM.
But since yesterday, TDMS File Viewer returns me the following -2503 error (see picture below):
I noticed that this error occures only the first time I try to open the file, and that a .tdms_index file is created at the same time. Then, the next time I try to open the .tdms file, it works quite nice.
Does anyone knows about this error, and what's the reason ?
    Thanks ...

Looks like the TDMS file might be corrupted and when the index file is generated, it will only read the sane part next time. Could you attach the TDMS file here, so that we can see if it can be recovered. If the file is too large to be put here you could upload it to  ftp://ftp.ni.com/incoming.

Thank you for the tip Paul.
However, a few comments if I may:
    1) Any form of file recovery, chkdsk, Scandisk etc etc is only a temporary solution, because this issue is triggered by deep sleep. So you can fix the thing, but as soon as you hit Deep Sleep, it'll come back.
    2) The Scandisk option is fine for verifying the Pod, but takes a very long time, runs the HDD continuously, and in the end achieves nothing more than can be accomplished by the chkdsk at the command prompt, or a soft reset (as I have tested) for this chkdsk error. However, for verifying the actual structure of the iPod it is good.
    3) Defragging the iPod is a much disputed topic. Whether it's actually any use for the music is unknown. I know a few people who do indulge in a big of defrag from time to time, but I've yet to have a report from anyone saying that it helps in any way.
Overall, Scandisk (with both of the Fix File System and Recover Bad Sectors options checked), followed by Defrag takes a whole lot longer than it would to Restore the Pod using iPod Updater. The Restore has the added benefit of freshly reinstating the operating system, which Scandisk and Defrag do not do...
chkdsk also takes a fraction of the time that Scandisk takes.
    Kind regards,
    Gopha.

  • Corrupt file downloading latest ios update

I tried downloading the latest ios7 for my ipad and iphone and am getting an error message for a corrupt file.  same when I do the internet download for my iphone.  Any ideas?

No, that is not normal at all. First try a reset and see if the update finishes. I have my doubts, but it will not hurt to try. Hold down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10 seconds until the Apple logo appears on the screen again, then let go of the buttons.
IF that doesn't jog the update into completing, you will have to restore your iPad using iTunes and you will need to use recovery mode.

  • External hard drive, error -36, corrupt files and slow transfer speeds

This is a long post but stay with me.
I've got an external 250GB Lacie drive connected to my 24" Intel iMac via Firewire 800. I have approximately 80GB worth of files (including my iPhoto library) on the Lacie that I'm trying to move over to my iMac but have run into some frustrating problems.
Overall, transfer speeds are erratic – fine at times and SUPER SLOW (5 minutes to transfer a 3MB file) at other times. At first I was transferring entire folders, but after always getting errors (error -36 to be exact), I was having to transfer individual files. This works fine as long as the files aren't too big (which makes the transfer speeds SUPER SLOW) and not corrupt (which gets me an error -36). Is my Lacie crashing on me? Is there any hope?
Here's what I've done to try and salvage my sanity with no resolve to my problems (not exactly in this order):
    1) Ran Disk Utility to repair Lacie. Everything came back OK
    2) Ran Disk Warrior on Lacie. Found a handful of bad items that Disk Warrior was able to repair. Had Disk Warrior replace the old directory of the Lacie with the new directory.
    3) Ran Drive Genius: Raired and Rebuilt the directory, did an Integrity Check (came back OK), attempted to Defrag but could not because of errors to the drive, did a Scan for bad blocks (which after running for 3 days! it was only 20% complete and had found over 150 bad blocks, at which point I quit to try something else)
    4) Checked that my Firewire cable was properly connected and replaced the older one I was using with a brand new one.
    5) Disconnected all peripherals except for keyboard, mouse and Lacie.
    6) And at times, even viewing a file on the Lacie has caused my Finder to crash, requiring a restart of my iMac.
I'm sure I've left something off I've tried but you get the idea.
I've read that maybe I can transfer my files using Terminal. Yes/No? Does this bypass any corruption the files may have?
What about creating a second partition on the Lacie and moving files over to the second partition? Does this solve anything? I don't know anything about partitioning so maybe I'm talking crazy.
I've also read that iPhoto tends to corrupt files which makes me hate iPhoto, and myself for not backing up.
And I've read a lot about error -36's and none of it sounds good so I'm just hoping that someone might have other suggestions for me to try and save my files (especially my iPhoto files which include baby pictures that if I lose, my wife will kill me).
So if anyone has any ideas, let me know. Please. I'll try anything.

    Hi Aaron Thompson-
I am fairly certain you have a bad power supply brick to the LaCie drive. This is a hard problem to troubleshoot as generally when the bricks go bad they do so slowly and the drive appears to power up and stuff but it just doesn't work.
If the drive is under warranty LaCie will replace the brick at no charge. Otherwise they sell them for around $20US on their website.
    Luck-
    -DP

Error message when compiling book "file is corrupt" referring to a photo.  Or "cannot find original photo".  Can you use photos that have been "edited" out of "Book Mode"?

I did copy it to my desktop, but it still won't let me open it.  I think the file on the disc might be corrupt or something like that though the cd itself checks out fine as far as viruses go.  I was able to verify the disc, but that's about it.  My husband tried it on his iMac and we have the same issue.  It's unzipping the folder, but won't let us open the folder on both the Mac Book Pro or the iMac by double clicking, going to file/open or right clicking.  It just keeps saying the same message as I posted above.  I think I'm just going to have the client put the pictures on either a memory card or a USB memory stick so she won't have to compress the files for zipping purposes.  It's been too frustrating trying to open this folder on this cd she gave me.  She said she created/zipped the cd on her Mac Book Pro but it sure won't open on mine.

  • Error downloading video (corrupted file) need help

I began to download the new quicksilver snowboarding film "That's it That's All" and when i was about halfway through the download i got an error message pop up saying that the file was corrupted and to choose the "check for available downloads" under the "store" tab to fix it. but after doing this numerous times i still am not able to download the video fully and its stuck about halfway. does anyone know how to fix this?
(by the way, the error report code is 8008 if anyone cares.)

    Hello
    I repeat my offer.
Not only because I wish to try to help you but because I wish to be able to understand what is the source of the oddity.
I'm afraid because I found on these forums some messages about corrupted files.
As my brain is not so large than Apple's offices, I join together these reports and the description of some encountered oddities of iWork products used under Mac OS X 10.5.
At this time I don't know which is the wrongdoer but it's clear that the relations between the apps and the OS are not perfectly correct.

  • Corrupt file error won't let me manage nano

I followed the 5 R's from the Apple website, but iTunes will not allow me to run the ipod updater and refuses even to show the ipod in its listing. It says "corrupt file /ipod-control/itunes run chkdsk". I actually ran a chkdsk from dos and that errors out saying the ipod_control/itunes is inaccessible. Is there an Apple program to just reformat the ipod withou having to "read" it, as the iTunes seems to? I did put on the latest iTunes (7.2).
    dell   Windows XP Pro

You could try a format of the iPod in Windows. A full format does a check and remap of bad sectors on the iPod hard drive, and you would need to restore the iPod as normal (using the iPod updater) afterward. This can also work when the iPod is recognized by the computer, but not by the updater.
First, put the iPod into forced disk mode.
See: How to put the iPod into disk mode.
On your PC, go "my computer" and right click on the iPod, then choose "format". Ensure the settings are at "default" and that "quick format" is not checked. Now select "format". It will take a while, but when that's finished, restore the iPod using the updater.
Also, see if either of these help.

it's plausible here that you're getting the drive-confusion-related version of the chkdsk (based on the fact that you're constantly getting the iPod setup assistant).

  • When I try to update firefox to the latest version, it comes up with a corrupt file error and won't install. Same for adobe flash player.

It seems that as of yesterday 05/10/13, anything that is downloaded will not install. Tried updating to the latest version of firefox, but that give the error of corrupt files.

It is possible that anti-virus software is corrupting downloaded files or is otherwise interfering with downloading files.
Try to disable the real-time (live) scanning of files in your anti-virus software temporarily to see if that makes downloading work.
    See:
    *browser.download.manager.scanWhenDone
Boot the computer in Windows Safe Mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that helps.
