The accidental OS 9

Friends in MacLand, help! My newly-acquired, very used 300 MHz iBook ($79 on eBay a few weeks ago) worked fine, but availables browsers made me hanker for an upgrade. No disks, of course, and no Classic OS installed.
I learned I needed to return it to OS 9 to move forward from OS 10.1 to upgrade the original 10/99 firmware to 4.1.7. eBay produced a pair of disks, one bootable with a big orange 9, the other an upgrade to 9.2.1 (products 691-3334-A and 1Z691-3362-A respectively). On the "OS X version 10.3 and older" forum I was advised to install OS 9 onto a reformatted Hard Drive, to upgrade to 9.2, and then to update the firmware. Not exactly intuitive but hardly difficult, right?
Things began smoothly, but once I reached the updating of firmware step, I noticed "Version 9.2.1" in very fine print on the bootable disk, and my hopes of being on 10.something by dusk dimmed. At the Apple site where I downloaded the firmware, the very first line of instructions say I need 9.1 to load it, so I'm stuck. (I tried it anyway, twice, without success...)
No offense to OS 9 loyalists, but I'm at a loss for landmarks in 9...have I got the wrong disks (these were promoted as "full retail OS 9" from sellers with feedback above 98%) or am I using them wrong? The system profiler now shows a Boot ROM version of 1.3f1, and I don't know what to do now.
In case it's in any way a clue, 9.2.1 seems torun fine, except that the AirPort installer wouldn't let me set up to connect to my wifi network, instead limiting my install choices to a base station.
I'll be greatful for OS 9-savvy wisdom...

Hi, Kim -
From the firmware update article for that machine, Article #75128 -
"If a message says you need to install Mac OS 9.1, the firmware updater will not run until you install Mac OS 9.1 or later."
Emphasis on the "...or later." This means that the firmware update should be installable on a machine running OS 9.2.1.
Some things that may help when installing a firmware update -
• Disconnect all externals except keyboard and mouse. Using Apple brand keyboard and mouse is preferred.
• Select the Mac OS Base or the Mac OS All set of extensions in Extensions Manager, and restart. This will remove any unintended intereference from 3rd-party software.
It is unclear from your post whether this may apply, but as a reminder, a firmware update can not be installed when the machine is booted to a CD. This will never work.

  • Has the "accidental trackpad input" option disappeared in Mac OS X 10.7 Lion?

It doesn't seem to be under any of the usual (mouse, trackpad, universal access) preference panes.

This sounds like a compatibility issue with the software you are using. I recommend you contact the software vendor for a Lion-compatible update.

  • HELP!  I saved a document.  Copied the document.  Went to delete some extra characters.  Accidentally deleted the entire document.  Now I can't find my document.  When I open the saved document, the page is blank.  Does Pages save copied text anywhere?

I saved a document.  Copied the document.  Went to delete some extra characters and accidentally deleted the text of the entire document.  I did not save a blank page.  I cannot recover the lost text.  Please Help.  I'm NEW to Pages.

    Hi Jan,
Copied text (or other copied material) is on the Clipboard, but only until you copy something else or log out of your account. If you act before doing another copy, you can paste the copied material back into the document. If you don't act right away, you may still have a path back.
One of the most useful keystroke combinations on the Mac is the "Oops! key," as a friend of mine once named it. That's command-Z, also known as "Undo". In some applications it will let you undo only a single step, but in others, including Pages, you can do repeated undos, so it's not quite so essential that you act immediately on making an error. Undo, done via the Oops! key, or via the Edit menu takes you back one change at a time. You can't skip any steps, so to get back to the state before the accidental deletion, you'll have to undo any work you've done since then. The memory of what to Undo disappears when you close the document or quit the application.
At that point you're at the mercy of your backup plan. If you've had Time Machine running, you'll be able to enter Time Machine and go back to an earlier, saved version of the file.
All these are in addition to the steps Ian suggested above.
    Regards,
    Barry
PS: Best piece of advice I can give a new Pages user (beyond Backup early and often) is to download and read through the first few chapters of the Pages '09 User Guide, available through the Help menu in Pages '09. Mostly pretty easy reading, and will get you through the basics without much trouble.

  • How should IT Departments approach the App Store?

This question is in the capacity as an IT Administrator for a small/mid size company.  We have 4 Macs, 8 iPads, and 3 iPhones.  I have 1 Mac and 1 iPad at work that I use.  2 years ago we considered the options with how to support Apple ID accounts, iTunes, App Store, and the payment method(s) which need to be on-file.
Given our experience with accidental app and in-app purchases (according to the employees), the accounting department and the president decided after a conference call with Apple Support using Apple Care that rather than use corporate credit cards on file with corporate apple IDs, we would switch to a model that de-coupled the purchasing approval with installation approval.  The old method required us to review the monthly corporate card accounts, then chase down the people to make sure proper purchasing approval had been sought prior to app or in-app purchase.  There was no incentive for the employees seek prior approval even though one would expect professional adults to do so.  Currently the company notes that it would take on average 8 weeks for an employee to reimburse the company for a recreational purchase.
The replacement system currently in use now is for all Apple IDs to be personal accounts with personal credit cards.  Then employees are responsible for submitting an expense report and risk having the expense report request denied.  The thinking was that this would curtail the accidental app or in-app purchases as the employee would risk not being reimbursed for an unapproved purchase.  This system worked and accidental reimbursed purchases went down to zero for employees for whom this was a problem with corporate credit cards.
This is the model we use for iPads and iPhones.  Up until now, all Mac software purchases were shink-wrap purchased online from Apple or via an Apple VAR.  The push for the Mac to use the App Store changes this.
MY QUESTION IS: if I buy the Mac OS X 10.7 Lion or 10.8 Mountain Lion with my personal Apple ID, can I install it on the other company Macs?  Will those users need to know my Apple ID password?  Or does the OS install without needing the Apple ID password?  What if a user needs me to install his or her OS on a company issued Mac, where he or she bought the OS under his or her Apple ID, can I install that OS without knowing his or her credentials?  Also can I install my copy of the OS on that company Mac and would future OS updates run without having to give that end user my own Apple ID Password?  Can I install the OS using my Apple ID then hand it off to him or her and let he or she run updates with his or her Apple ID?  Does it work that way?  We would rather not share passwords as each of our accounts has a personal credit card on file.
We would consider corporate Apple ID accounts if the following requirements can be implemented.  All app or in-app purchases should fire off an event which goes first to the employee’s direct manager then next to the company’s controller for approval.  If approved, then the app store or iTunes store should allow the end user to install the purchased item.  All company purchases should be kept under NET30 terms, then invoiced at the end of the month and paid all at once.  These are the requirements from our accounting department.  This is how all of our other vendors (IBM, Microsoft, Oracle, etc.) are paid.
The App Store seems to exist in some new virtual reality which our accounting department and legal/policy.compliance departments cannot comprehend.  I know IT Departments often get blamed for this, however, in our case that would just be shooting-the-messenger.   I am just trying to understand how all of this should work.  It would seem to me that this new consumer-cloud-model exists the way we have Apple IDs currently set up. The end-user interfaces with the App Store, then works directly with accounting to pay for the services.  It doesn't seem like IT needs to be involved anymore.  This is currently how we are attempting to approach this consumer cloud App Store model.  The upside is it let's IT focus on projects which directly require our unique expertise rather than play App-Store-middlemen with no value-add.
    You thoughts?

See also "Apple Support Communities > Mac App Store > Using Mac App Store > Discussions > purchase order" https://discussions.apple.com/message/15455935#15455935
However, that cited solution won't work for us as the same Apple ID password would all for both purchases and installations.  We need to de-couple those 2 roles according to guidelines from our corporate office.  The decision making (purchasing) and adminstrative/administraton/installation roles need to be separate and discrete.  It is also similar to an enterprise model when developers write code in DEV environment, move it to a QA environment for testing, then a separate IT administrator (or Install Team) needs to copy the new code into the PROD environment.

  • What's the point of warranty?

I am a student coming from Hong Kong  to London for postgraduate study. Before I left Hong Kong, I decided to buy a netbook for my lecturers in the UK. Lenovo s10-2 was chosen because the version available in HK comes with 6 cell battery with international warranty and Lenovo Protection Service (against accidental damage).
This is the first Lenovo machine for me. All was well and I was starting to appreciate Lenovo. Suddenly, the LED screen started to flick with white lines moving across the it, just two weeks after I bought it from Hong Kong.
Yesterday, I called the UK support line who initially suggested replacement (because the purchase is last than 30-day old). However, when the agent found out that I bought the machine in Hong Kong, he said I could only get it repairs. Fair enough.
I packed the netbook this afternoon ready to ship it to the repair center. Being not sure about whether or not my proof of purchase was needed, I called the support line again. This time, the agent gave me a "friendly warning" or maybe a management of my expectations.
I was told that Lenovo believes that there is a 99.5% chance that these type of problems are due to “internal damages" caused by users! I was also advised that sending the machine in for repairs risk myself getting into paying 230 pounds (pretty much the purchase cost) to get the LED screen fixed because it is likely to be not covered by warranty. On top of that, I would have to pay 65 pounds even if I want my netbook back after inspection without getting fixed because again, 99.5% chance that "damages by users" would be concluded!
What's the point of warranty? Totally unacceptable. Any thoughts? Should I take the risk?
I only got the machine just over two weeks ago and used for less than 10 times!

    seblee,
This bears a bit of looking into to provide you the best answer.   Sometimes, the accidental damage policies are only valid in the home country, and I would like to check.  If that were to be the case, you would have replacement or repair options in HK, but standard warranty terms would likely apply in UK.
Your situation sounds exceptional, and I'd like to look into this and see what can be done.
Can your send me a private message with your contact information and the serial number from the bottom of the unit?
Sorry that you are having this trouble.  Will see how we can help.

  • TPTwist - 3 Repair attempts before breaking my computer. Now, left in the dust of pure incompetence

    Okay,
I purchased my Thinkpad Twist about a year ago.  Purchased the accidental damage warranty because its a twist and i am kind of a clutz.
    About six months later...
    -Fan Grinding.
    -Minor Touchscreen issues.
No problem, this is my primary business/school machine so I can put up with the problems for now.  Just be sure not to use the machine in tablet mode and all is well for now..
    About four months later...
-LCD Panel volume buttons malfunction.  Any time the screen is opened beyond a 90 degree angle or twisted, it thinks I am holding down the volume up button.  So I cannot use the machine in a public place without headphones plugged in.
Okay.  Despite the Lenovo Support horror stories, its time to make use of my extended warranty.
    It Starts.....
Contacted support, they were awesome, had a box sent to me within two days and i sent my computer in no problem.  After my computer arrives at the lenovo repair center, it isn't there for more than a few hours before they sent it back to me.  The ESC website has 0 updates on the status/progress of the repair.
I recieve the computer and think, awesome!  Lenovo has a rockin turn-around time!!!
    FALSE!!!
    Problems reported:
    -CPU Fan noise
-Random ScreenTouches (Even out of tablet mode)
    -Volume Key Malfunction
    Problems Fixed:
    -NONE
I promptly contacted support and calmly explained my situation.  After apologizing they informed me that it was my fault the computer was not fixed as they were waiting on my to contact them concerning the problems and repair...  But wait, the ESC website did not update once after I sent the computer back, how was I supposed to know I needed to contact support?  Why couldn't they simply open and power on the computer to verify there were issues?
Watev, I understand sometimes customers can fall through the cracks.  I have four years of experience working in computer repair.  I re-sent the computer in immediately after recieving  it.
Once again, the computer was recieved by the Lenovo repair center and within a few hours was immediately sent back to me.  Again, no updates at all on the the ESC website..
    2nd Repair Attempt:
    Problems reported:
    -CPU Fan noise
-Random ScreenTouches (Even out of tablet mode)
    -Volume Key Malfunction
    Problems Fixed:
    -Motherboard Replaced????
    -None..
    Problems Caused:
-CPU Fan Error on first boot.....
Okay, I understand that sometimes mistakes happen.  This has gone from an innocent oversight to a weakness in Lenovo's Quality Assurance.  I again promtly contacted support and calmly expressed my concerns.  By now 2 weeks have gone by.   The support representative did not blame it on me this time (which is better I guess) but instead offered oodles of apologies.  The rep assured me that they would keep the computer for at lease 1 extra day to perform extensive quality tests, and ensure the computer is 100% functional before its returned to me.  It was at the end of the week so they didn't get another box to me until the following Wednesday..  But wait, why ship one box when you can ship two??!!  That's right, I received two boxes for my computer under two different service tags with two completely different problem descriptions.  I sent the computer in under the service tag I was provided over the phone.  I included the second overnight shipping label in my box as to not waist time shipping an empty box next day air back to Lenovo.
    It Continues.....
The computer is once again shipped back to me after having been at the repair center for no more than 5-6 hours.
    Problems reported:
    -CPU Fan noise
-Random ScreenTouches (Even out of tablet mode)
    -Volume Key Malfunction
    Problems Fixed:
    -CPU Fan
    -Volume Key Malfunction
    Problems Caused:
-Pinched LCD Cable in the hinge of the laptop and broke the LCD top plate and Bezel near the hinge.
         - Now the LCD Panel grinds against the chassis above the keyboard and the finish is wearing off.  The LCD Panel is split open at the bottom and the Touchscreen issues are still occuring.  There is way to much tension when opening the lid and its caused by the LCD cable pinching in the center hinge.
    Okay...
I immediately contacted Lenovo and expressed my frustration (calmly I might add - with experience working in computer repair I know that they are not going to want to fix the computer of some @$# yelling at them over the phone).  The support representative related with me, and assured me that I was the exception not the rule and that service issues like this are highly uncommon.  He told me that they were going to replace the machine with a brand new laptop and submitted an escalated service request for me.
I was told:  "It will only take a maximum of 48 hours for someone to contact you and let you know if the escalation is approved."
2 days and no attempt made to contact me later, I called back.  A different representative informed me that I was wrong and that the minimum time frame for someone to contact me is actually 72 hours.
Okay, 4 days later and still no attempt made to contact me.  I called back.  "We are very sorry, unfortunately there is nothing we can do.  This has to be handled by a seperate department.  Someone should contact you within 48 hours.
3 days later, no attempt made to contact me.  I am at 1 week since the escalated service request was submitted.  I call back.  The supervisor at the support center is taking my calls at this point, and has been very helpful.  I wish the department that needed to contact me had .01% of the compitence of the supervisor "####"  (I will not use his name on forums) I have been working with at the support center.  If they did, I would have been sorted a long time ago.  He informed me that he emailed the VP of the sales department as well as a sales rep to try and prod someone to wake up and take action.
1 week later... no calls made.  I am livid as Its been over a month and a half and I have been unable to use my computer once.  It is now in worse condition than it was before I sent it in, and aside from the support supervisor I have been working with, no one at Lenovo cares.  I call back and was informed that they are contacting some hotline and that a representative would contact me no matter what within 2 days.
Its been 3 days and I still have not had a call.  Its over the weekend so nothing can even be done until monday.  Its been two and a half weeks since my computer arrived trashed by the repair technician, and no attempts have been made to contact me despite my efforts to politely acquire help from Lenovo.
Lenovo took my money for the extended warranty, broke my computer and is currently giving me a long middle finger as I wait for any kind of help.  I have only ever owned Thinkpads and in a house full of a family that only ownes apple products, they are laughing at me now for talking up my Lenovo products.  I feel like the but of a bad joke.  I cannot beleive the Thinkpad brand name has fallen so low.  Bottom Line...
Regretably I think I am going to have to cross Lenovo off the top of my list for my next PC.  I can't stress enough how dissapointing this has been for me.  I hope I really am the exception and not the rule, but judging by the information I have found online, This is more common that I would have suspected prior.  I hope you all have better luck if you ever need Lenovo to fix your computer.  I mean it, Good Luck.

Luckily got the nano working (showing in iTunes). Actually I loaded TouchCopy to see if that recognised it and it didn't, but next time I launched iTunes it did recognise it, so all is good now.

  • Restarting on its own -all the time!

My iMac G5 is behaving very oddly. About two weeks ago it began restarting on its own whenever I left it for more than an hour or two. It rarely restarted because it would hang up on closing an application that had something to save, like a word doc or a Firefox with multiple tabs. Always there is a timed-out error on logout operations. I can not think of any certain piece of software I recently installed at the time, no idea why its happening.
-My energy saver does not have a scheduled shut down and restart pref, neither is it in my Cocktail settings.
-I created a second admin user, restarted and logged in as it, and it still happened.
-I did an archive and install and it still happens
    Welcome to any ideas.

    js--
Let's say your Mac shut down yesterday afternoon about 3.
Go into the console logs and take your time to just read it,
and see what happens a few lines before "Shutdown."
If you just hunker in there are read, you'll begin to see normal patterns
and abnormal events prior to the accidental restarts.
You could paste the information here, but first try to get

  • Can I open a history page without having it update? I accident. deleted ebay items & want to open the pg from history in it's previous state when the items show

I think History pages when opened retrieve the new information for the particular page & open it in its updated state. I would like to open the history page in its old state, before I did the accidental deletions... I thought this was possible but couldn't find any instructions.... -- thanks in advance for anyone's help!

You best bet is to put FF in offline mode, and try to load the page from the cache. Note, there is no guarantee that this will work.

my Iphone 5(purchased in Jan 2013) has suddenly developed a multicolored hue in the center of the **** screen. it looks pathetic and totally whacked out. Its rainy and humid where I stay this time of the year. Apple guys are you reading this? does the management go through this website.? Hey Apple guys, can you replace my phone for me.Its so slippery and slides out very easily from my hands. I have owned smartphones before but yours is a real slimy slider. so while I was shooting pics in varanasi in march it fell out of my palm (it was drizzling) and the rear screen (the section next to the camera) kinda cracked real ugly and obviously due to this the camera is behaving kinda crazy too. can you guys help me out here.?

If your phone is defective (aside from the accidental damage) Apple will fix or replace the phone. You saud you purchased the phone in January so it is still under warranty.
If you have an Apple Store in your area, make a Genius Bar appointment.

  • After updating to iOS 5, the Photo album stopped working.

After updating to iOS v5, my iphone 4S's built-in Photo app stopped working.
The Camera takes a photo, but the photo disappears from the camera roll and shows no photos in the photoalbum.
My iPhone used to take photos so, I don't believe it is a hardware issue.
Is anyone having the same problem?
Would there be a update of the v5 to solve this issue?

    I figured it out.
In my case, I just needed to restore my phone to the factory setting.
My iphone = iphone 4 running iOS v5
    My computer = iMac
Software didn't work = preinstalled "Photos" app
Symptoms = after I take a photo, the image thumbnail of the camera roll shows the image, but images are found neither in the camera roll nor in the albums of the "Photos".
    Solution procedure:
    connect the iphone to iMac
in the Summary window of the devices, click "Restore"
choose not to save the backup file
choose to restore the iphone as a "NEW" device instead of choosing a backup files*
    follow the rest of instructions.
It helped and now I can view my photos in the photo album.
    * However, I accidentary re-restored it with a saved backup file and the "Photos" application stopped working again. I repeated the resotre procedure avoiding the accidental restoration to a backup file.
The camera and the photos were working before iOS v5 update, and it is now working again. So, it is obviously not the hardware issue. It seems that iOS v5 and the Photos are having compatibility issue Apple should look into this issue.

  • Can't see backup library after accidentally deleting library

In trying to free up some hard drive space - it was almost empty - I accidentally deleted my entire iPhoto Library, emptying it from the trash. Thankfully I do back up to an external hard drive, and have moved the backed up library back to my Pictures folder. However, I cannot see the library in iPhoto, even when i Option-start the app and "Choose" that library. I only get 95 photos that i have imported since the accidental deletion and moved to that back up folder after re-copying it.
Any ideas why I can't see the Library in iPhoto even after choosing it? I'm not going to have to go through and import every photo am I? (I hope not as they are stored by year/month/day in hundreds of folders).
I would also like to know how to get this to work as I have ordered a new iMac today, and will want to choose the same Library on it too.
    Thanks.
    15 PowerBook G4 1.33   Mac OS X (10.3.8)
    15 PowerBook G4 1.33   Mac OS X (10.3.8)

    HI roger,
Navigate through the iPhoto Library folder and see if all your photos are in there. I just want to make sure that the backup library does indeed have your photos in there. If it does, and iPhoto still can't see your library, maybe a data file got messed up.
In that case, you can create a new library and import from the old very easily by following the next instructions below.
    Close iPhoto
Rename your messed up iPhoto Library to "iPhoto Library_old"
Drag this library to your desktop
Hold down the Option key and launch iPhoto
This is the window you will get
Create a new library or choose a library to open
Choose to create a new library
Once this new empty library is open it is time to import the images from your old library
    Go to File>add to library
Navigate to the old library on your desktop and highlight it in the window, then click the "import" button.
iPhoto will start importing the images from your old library
    This is what to expect:
Your images will be imported in nice dated rolls. (make sure your view is set to sort by rolls to see it) There are a couple of caveats to this. You will get rolls named "Originals" These rolls will contain your video clips and your original images that you had edited. If you had RAW files they would be in those rolls too (I don't do RAW, so I don't know for sure) Delete what you don't want from those rolls. You will also get the jpeg pointer files to your video clips imported. They will just be jpegs and will not point to the video clips anymore as iPhoto made new ones when the clips were imported again. You can delete those. they should be in a roll right next to the newly imported video clips so they are not hard to find. The thumbnail files don't get imported as iPhoto makes new ones when the images are imported.
Once all you images have been imported, check through the library and make sure everything looks ok.
You can now start making your Albums, and do your keywords or any other organizational steps.
You can also delete the old library on the desktop.
It is also a good time to backup this new library to CD/DVD by burning the iPhoto LIbrary folder in the Finder, or copying the iPhoto Library folder to an external drive formatted for Macs, or copying the iPhoto LIbrary folder to an iPod.
    Good luck!

  • How can I undo the deleting of a calendar?

How can I undo the accidental deleting of a calendar within the ipad calendar program? How can I generally undo things I did within the ipad programs?

    Hi,
Per my understanding, you might want to check if there any overlapped recurring events in Event Receiver.
You can build the query with <DateRangesOverlap> to return the recurring events with Server Object Model.
A code demo in the thread below about how to get recurring events from Calendar for your reference:

  • "ignore accidental trackpad input" gone?

I read about the option "ignore accidental trackpad input" in the help pages, in several fora and in Pogues's Missing Manual, but I can't find it. There is a checkbox "ignore trackpad when mouse is connected", but not the "accidental input" one. Has this option been removed in 10.5.4? Has it been forgotten in the german localization (which I use)? Is there any other way to turn this feature on?

I don't know if this actually does something, because the option is not in ~/Library/Preferences/.GlobalPreferences.plist file by default. However, the option is ignoreTypingFilter, and you can set it thusly:
defaults write .GlobalPreferences com.apple.mouse.ignoreTypingFilter -bool true
I figured this out by looking here:
    http://www.macgeekery.com/gspot/2007-04/sneakilykilling_thetrackpad
And then getting a friend to check his macbook for the correct variable for this feature.
Note that this may not cause any functional difference, or it may interfere with gestures. Please post and tell us if you think it's doing something. Of course, to turn it off simply do
defaults write .GlobalPreferences com.apple.mouse.ignoreTypingFilter -bool false
or open the file and remove the lines:
    <key>com.apple.mouse.ignoreTypingFilter</key>
    <true/>
Note that for all I know, it needs to be
    <integer>1</integer>
    and not <true/>
Please let us know if this works!
