The display on my desktop is a weird ex-ray setting

My cat stepped all over my keyboard and switch the display setting on my desktop to a ex-ray setting. How do I set it back to normal?
Thanks!

Open the Universal Access pane of System Preferences, click on the Seeing tab, turn off White on Black, and drag the Contrast slider all the way to the left.

  • How to set the DISPLAY variable to run admsi.pl?

    Dear Experts,
I'm trying to patch Oracle apps R12 using admsi.pl.
    hostname: black
    APPS db: VIS
But I keep getting the error:
Please set the DISPLAY variable and re-run this script
    This is what I did:
VIS database and listener are already running.
login to the linux server as unix user: applmgr
    cd /oapps/applmgr/VIS/apps/apps_st/appl/
    . APPSVIS_black.env
    cd /oapps/applmgr/VIS/apps/apps_st/appl/ad/12.0.0/bin/
    admsi.pl
    Invoking Oracle Patch Application Assistant....
Please set the DISPLAY variable and re-run this script
    huh ?
    set | grep -i "display"
    DISPLAY=:0.0
    set | wc
    435 486 25235
I notice that there are 36 .env files!
    For applmgr alone!!
find /oapps/applmgr/ -type f -name "*.env" | wc
    36 36 2626
For oracle, there are another 7 .env files!
find /oapps/oracle/ -type f -name "*.env" | wc
    7 7 513
Did I get the environment (env) file correct?
Or do I need to run a few more env first?
    If so, which ones?
What would the order of operations be?
sqldeveloper has given me problems with Display sometimes.
    But even sqldeveloper works fine.
What is the secret to get admsi.pl to run in the normal manner?
    Thank a lot!

Thanks a lot, that worked! So the perl script was wrong.
In the meantime, I had done this, and it seemed to work:

  • How can I automatically "retract" all windows from my Thunderbolt display back to my MacBook Air when I disconnect the display, esp if the Thunderbolt is the desktop with the white menu bar?

I am in and out of my office with my MacBook Air.  I would like to set it up so when I plug in my Thunderbolt display in the office, the Thunderbolt display has my desktop, menu bar and the open windows.  If I set the Thunderbolt display to mirror by MacBook Air it adjusts to the lower resolution of the MacBook Air, which is a waste of a cool monitor.  I can set it up as an extended desktop and drag the white menu bar to the Thunderbolt display so it displays my desktop but if I then disconnect my MacBook Air, the menu bar is absent and all the windows that were seen on that display are absent, as if it I was still attached to the larger display.  The only way around this is to go to Thunderbolt display preferences, drag the white menu bar back to the smaller display and manually drag all windows to the smaller display before disconnecting.  Doing this multiple times per day is a real pain.  Is there a way to set my MacBook Air to recognize when it is attached to the Thunderbolt display and automatically my desktop and all open windows to it and then do the same process in reverse when I unhook it?

It's definitely not supposed to work like that...when you plug the display in, it should just turn on and adjust your displays.  It works like that on my MBP.  Kind of a silly question, but do you have the MagSafe from the display plugged in your MBAir too?  Thats a requirement.  Beyond that, it should "just work."
Not sure if there is some setting to enable...i haven't seen it.  Call to support?

My macbook had a weird behavior on the display, now it won't go further than gray loading screen with the apple logo. It's a macbook pro early 2011. I've read that those are having issues, if there's someone i can contact for further information, report the issue since it's getting common or any temporal solution available. Thanks

Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    Reinstall Mountain Lion or Mavericks
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

Does anyone know how to display the index of current desktop?
Brute force - - I have written the number of the Desktop directly onto the wallpaper picture I am using for each Desktop  (easy to do with Preview).
All Desktops are using different wallpaper photos, so they are easily recognized by the color scheme, and in the upper left corner is the number.

  • Most times when I import photos from my desktop or dropbox to iPhoto, iPhoto will keep the title I created for the image as the display title under the image. but occasionally it displays the filename instead and I have to go back through and reenter

most times when I import photos from my desktop or dropbox to iPhoto, iPhoto will keep the title I created for the image as the display title under the image. but occasionally it displays the filename instead and I have to go back through and reenter the title in iPhoto. why the inconsistency? running OS 10.9.5 and using iPhoto 9.5.1

Try this:  select one of the photos that are showing the wrong title and use the Photos ➙ Batch Change ➙ Title to File Name menu option.
See if that will put the name that you want under the thumbnail.

  • Does the desktop on the display match the desktop on the portable exactly?

I just want to check before I go ahead and order the display and the new MBA whether the desktops of the two will match perfectly.
The reason I am asking this is that I have been googling images of the display and in most of the pictures the display's desktop looks different to the desktop of the attached portable. This is also the case on Apple.com's site.
In one display, the desktop looks the same but is missing the dock.
I need to have the display showing the exact same desktop as my portable (Macbook Air 13 inch) including the dock. I know though the resolutions will be different so more of a web page will show up on the display. That is OK. That is the reason I am buying a display.
Examples of how the desktops differ:

Thanks for clearing up any confusion over this.

I need to have the display showing the exact same desktop as my portable (Macbook Air 13 inch) including the dock.
Enable mirroring in the "Arrangement" tab of "Displays" system preference.
I know though the resolutions will be different so more of a web page will show up on the display.
No. With mirroring you will see only what is on the MacBook display. The screen will have black borders if its resolution is greater than the MacBooks's displau.

  • I have a MacBook Pro, using )S X, Version 10.6.8,Processor 2.53GHZ Intel Core Duo: it suddenly enlarged all displays and the items on my desktop became blurry. I tried resetting font sizes, and using "zoom out" but nothing worked. Any suggestions?

I have a Mac Book Pro, using OSX 10.6.8. The displays on any and all screens suddenly became larger and the files on the desktop screen became blurry. I don't know how to return to original appearance.

try a two finger drag on the trackpad holding the CONTROL key.  You may be in a zoom mode.
Also check the settings in System Preferences>Displays>Display.
    Ciao.

  • Desktop is too big for the display

Some how this morning while on my Mac a display setting or something was changed. If your on the desktop, with all windows closed, the background, icons, dock.....everything is too big for the display. If you move the cursor all the way to left it will 'slide' the desktop in that direction. Move it all the way to the right edge of the display and it 'slides' the desktop to the right until you reach the edge. Also the same for the up or down directions.
At first I thought it had something to do with the multi-touch track pad, but I don't think so. I have checked all the display settings I can think of and have tried re-sizing the desktop to all other settings in an attempt to fix the problem. Additionally I have restarted/shutdown the computer totally to see if it would fix the issue. No success. Please help.
    Thx,
    Audioboy

I had the same problem, but the zoom was already off. So I went under "options" and unchecked "use scroll wheel with modifier keys to zoom," and that took care of it.
Thought that might help some others who find this thread.

  • Using Powerbook as a desktop: HDD/battery heat bad for the display?

I'm planning on hooking up my 12" powerbook to an external monitor and use it as a desktop. The Powerbook's display itself is in 100% working order, and I would like to take it with me to use while traveling.
What I worry about is the heat from the HDD, the battery, and the fans - they get pretty hot sometimes when the computer's on. And since using the Powerbook as a desktop would require the display to be closed at all times, would the heat damage the display?
Please share any thoughts and/or experience you may have concerning this.
    Thank you!

Usually, the fans don't turn on when my lid is closed, but then again, I'm not doing the same thing you're doing, using it as a "desktop" with an external monitor.
What you can do is leave your lid open, designate the external monitor as the primary screen while the PowerBook's LCD screen becomes the secondary one. Then, you can dim the screen to "zero" on your PowerBook while the external remains on and the primary.
You do this by going to System Preferences and the Displays icon, and on the resulting screen--you have to be connected to your external monitor to do this--click on the "Arrangement" tab and you'll get a screen that lets you drag a bar from left to right.
This bar represents the menu bar and dragging it to, say your external is on the right, will make the square on the right your primary, while on the left side, the square will represent your PowerBook's display and become the secondary monitor.
Hope that made sense. Plus, I don't remember my PowerBook's fans running when I did try that once. Used the PowerBook connected to an external monitor while the display was closed and running as a "desktop." Any which way, closed lid or not, it's the same principal. The only thing you get is something unsightly if you don't like the idea of having your laptop out next to the display and keyboard. As opposed to tucking it away somewhere.

  • Can you rotate the display/desktop in snow leopard?

I was wondering if it is possible to rotate the display in snow leopard. I looked in display setting but I didn't see the option there, if I there is one. I looked in a couple other places but I didn't see it. Is there something that can possible be downloaded to get this option or, maybe not. Seems like a pretty basic feature I would thing it would be there but then again I've overlooked some pretty simple things in the past, so it might right in front of my face. In case my intent isn't clear what I want to be able to do is physically rotate my rectangle wide screen monitor to a horizontal position so it's width is smaller then it hight, and so I need to also rotate the desktop image to correspond with the position of the monitor. Can anyone help, Thanks.

Up until a few months ago, I was a PC user. Three years or so ago I bought an ipod 80gb, then a Zune 80gb a year later to watch movies on, because I drove a lot, so I would watch TV on the ipod and movies on the Zune. But the Zune was a totally glitchy annoying piece of poo. I ended up selling it on Ebay. I bought an ipod 160gb classic through apple.com and both ipods have worked flawlessly sense I bought them. Then I began to ponder about my PC, and just how glitchy it always was and how complicated everything had to be to get things to work. I had used Mac in the past while at work or different places and always liked what I saw. So last year, I think October, I bought a Mac mini to start off with then If I liked it I was going to upgrade in a year or so to something more beefy. The moral of my story is that, I come to learn that after spending all those years dealing with a PCs and everything being so complicated I sometimes assume that when I need to do something on the Mac, I still think it's going to be a hassle so I over look very simple things which turn out to be the solution. I've done that a few times now.
I can honestly say that I have never really been disappointed with any thing that the mac does and I am always surprised with what it can do and how easy to use it is. I'm waiting for the day when the Mac OS over takes MS as the primary consumer OS so that compatible hardware and software is more readily available at stores. Whether that days comes or not I don't know, but I hope it does.

  • U310 Display not showing the entire desktop black section on right side of the display??

Normally this laptop has a monitor plugged into the HDMI port. One day during routine maintenance the laptop was unplugged from the HDMI port and ever since the display is not working. The entire desktop image is moved slightly down about a 1/4 of an inch and about an inch to the left leaving a 1 inch black unusable section of the display and moved the windows taskbar partially off the screen.
I have tried re-installing the drivers - system restore. Nothing seems to work. Is this machien broken?

    Hi Telecotek,
Thanks for the reply and sorry for delay in response.
As you have mentioned that the issue still persists, hence try to boot the system in safe mode and check for the issue.
Also try to uninstall the driver from the device manager and try to reinstall the driver and check for the issue.

  • Is there any way to lock the HDMI display on one desktop?

    Hello!
My Macbook Pro HDMI-connection to my TV works great -- the only thing I wasn't able to figure out is if it was possible to lock the HDMI display on one desktop. I use five different desktops (spaces) and I'm using extended desktop(s) for my HDMI, but every time I switch to another desktop, whatever I'm watching on my TV switches to the extended desktop for whatever space I just switched to, meaning that my TV switches to blank screens. Is there any way that, even if I continue switching through desktops on my computer, I can keep my HDMI locked on the extended space for "Desktop 1," for example?
    Hope that makes sense. Thanks!

If you disable the "Change with buttons" setting, the buttons will still control the general volume (music, games, etc) but will NOT change the ringer or alarm sound settings (keyboard clicks also fall into this category but is not mentioned). This lets you use the volume up/down buttons to change the general volume level without changing the ringer and alarm volume levels...it keeps you from inadvertently turning down the ringer or alarm volume and missing calls and alarms.
That being said, there's no way to totally disable the volume up/down buttons from doing something volume related.
