The Phone Line that doesn't exist...

I've just moved into a new property, the day I moved in I phoned o2 to order their internet and line rental package. The guy I spoke to said he had checked with BT openreach and that the line to my address was ceased and that I would have to pay a connection fee of £85.
I thought this was unusual as the people who owned the house before us had an active phone line, I checked the incoming voltages (I've worked with phone lines before) and there is 50V incoming. I have since got hold of a phone, plugged it into the socket and there is a dial tone. Tried phoning out to see if there is still an active number but after dialing a few digits I get "the number you have called has not been recognised".
Just got off the phone with both o2 and BT who are both adamant that there is no phone line what-so-ever connected to my property and that I have to pay for an engineer to visit and install a line.
Clearly I'm not willing to pay for anyone to come and visit when there is a working line! What can I do?!?!

Sounds as if you have what is known as a soft dial tone on the line.
I don't think that Openreach stop the lines completely these days.
I have to admit I'm not 100% clued up on activation charges or terms for lines but would suggest that you would need to shop around for the best order.
Regardless of what SPs charge for a line they are still charged by Openreach.
When I had my line activated I was told that the line would have had to have been active in the previous 6 weeks for no charge to be raised and an activation to be completed.  Otherwise it would have been looked at as a provide.

    It is all up to you. You can use the phone line which came with the printer or you can get a new one. It does need to be a 2-wire phone line though.

  • The Vertical FlowLayout that doesn't Exist?

    Ok, I've looked through the forum, and checked on a popular search engine, and it seems to me that there is no such thing as a vertically oriented FlowLayout. But why not? Is it difficult/impossible to implement? Please, someone, explain.
    Some suggested solutions to this involve using a vertical BoxLayout, but that just seems ugly, what with the way components get stretched to fit the entire height of the window. Of course one can set the maximum sizes of the components and so on, but it seems to me that that's just making things more complicated than (I think) they ought to be. And to make matters worse the components are all crushed together with no gaps in between..
    Surely a LayoutManager that stacks components vertically at their preferred sizes by default would be a fundamentally useful thing?
    Well anyway... not much of a question (more of a moan), never-the-less, if anyone knows why a vertical FlowLayout doesn't exist as standard please let me know... Then later I'll have a moan about the GridLayout asking why it doesn't keep each row and column only as tall and as wide as it needs to be.

I know from the name you would never guess it could do a vertical FlowLayout, but it turned out to be far more flexible than I ever imagined it would be. In your case the code would be something like:
    RelativeLayout rl = new RelativeLayout(RelativeLayout.Y_AXIS, 5);
    //rl.setAlignment(RelativeLayout.LEADING);
    rl.setAlignment(RelativeLayout.CENTER);
    JPanel panel = new JPanel( rl );

  • Unbalanced Body Tag on a line that doesn't exist

    I'm receiving an unbalanced body tag error on line 129 and
    line 194, however these two lines don't exist in the template
    ALSO, whenever I create new pages from the template it
    automatically tries to save the new pages as .dwt and places them
    in the templates folder instead of the chosen format of html.
    Please advise. (see code attached)

    This REALLY definitely means your page is scrambled. Are you
    using FILE |
    New From Template when you create these new pages?
    Looking at the code below, I can see several anomalies.
    1. There is this unnecessary line - <!-- TemplateInfo
    codeOutsideHTMLIsLocked="false" -->. Why is it there?
    2. There is NO editable region around the <title> tag.
    3. There is NO editable region in the head of the page in
    addition to #2,
    above.
    These last two are the sign of an improperly made template.
    Do this -
    Create a new page (Basic HTML).
    Use FILE | Save as Template....
    Look at the code in the head region of the page, particularly
    the editable
    region around the <title> tag, and the other editable
    region in the head
    called "head".
    Make your template file look like that.
    Always use FILE | Save as Template when you create your
    templates and you
    won't have this problem again.

  • TypeError: Error #1010 on code that doesn't exist.

    Hello all,
    I have a drop down menu with 7 options. The menu is a movie clip with a mask that reveals each of the buttons when a person mouse_overs the menu button. Each menu option does the same thing, it will call a function based on the button clicked. The function for each button does the same thing:
    function INDEX_Safety (e:MouseEvent):void
              play();
              INDEX_SAFETY=true;
              Sound_Stopper ();
    Each of the functions will change the value of its respecive boolean variable. One for each button. Sound Stopper is a function that stops any FLV Sound that is currently playing.
    When it goes through play() it will come to a particular frame that has:
    Index_Jumper ();
    this function determines which boolean has been set to true, and does a gotoAndPlay("Label Name") based on the boolean that has been set to true. Then sets the boolean back to false.

    TypeError: Error #1010: A term is undefined and has no properties.

    It says frame 147:10
    From my understanding this means the 10th line on Frame 147.

    Being able to focus on this, i see that i have IndexMC.TBDL instead of IndexMC.TDBL, i think this was one of those "been looking at this thing for too long" errors. Thank you for looking into this, the problem is now solved. As for the error pointing to a line that doesn't exist:
    I still have no idea why it would say the issue was frame 147:10

    iCloud has my old Apple ID and is prompting for a password, but I want to put in the new id, I can't because it is grey and there is no edit option.  I'm prompted for a password to an account that doesn't exist.  Anyone know what I can do to fix this or why this is happening.?  I had no issue putting in my new Apple ID everywhere else, I could sign out of the old and inactive account and then sign back in using my new and proper one.  However, after the update to 7.3 it did a whole welcome to yr iPad and a set up thing and it went to set up iCloud and had my old Apple ID in grey where I can't change or edit it, it wants the password, when I put in the old password, it say yr Apple ID is incorrect but yet it won't let me change it??????? Anyone???

    Sign out and back into your apple id from Settings>iTunes and App stores>(Your apple ID)>Sign Out and then sign in again with the new address. Close app store from running in the background (or restart the phone if your unsure how to do this). If when trying to update any apps they are still asking for the old apple ID, delete and re-install those apps.

    Have you tried changing the admin password in System Preferences > Users & Groups > Password   ??

    That doesn't help me. For itunes it brings me to the express lane which doesn't help because my case is not in it. It's all standard procedure things. I understand those but my situation is different. The combination of a passport forgotten and an non-existing email adress (and birth dates that are not correct or not accepted). What I need is my password emailed to another email adress than the original one because that no longer exists.

    The apple id login is never deleted. The emaill address itself can be disabled or not in use any longer. The apple id login will still be available to you. If you will go to the website My Apple Id
    https://appleid.apple.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/MyAppleId.woa/
    and use the listed apple id login that your apps are asking for to update - once you have changed the password at the lsted website you then will be able to update using the old apple id once you have logged into the device using the old apple id and password.

    iPhone 5 shows data in Photos that doesn't exist.
    iPhone 5, 16GB running iOS 8.1.2.  Service through Verizon. iCloud Photo Library (Beta) is off. My Photo Stream is off. iCloud photo sharing is off.
    Under "About" in settings it says there are 32 Videos and 429 Photos on the device with a capacity of 12.6GB and 7.0GB available.
    Normally, I used to import photos and videos from Preview and manually delete them on the phone, until I realized this could also be done in Image Capture with the ability to delete all of them with one click, which is what I did this time (I have done it through Image Capture at least once before).
    I've tried in this order:  Creating an empty folder and syncing to it through iTunes.  That didn't work, so I created a backup on iTunes, completed the "Erase All Content and Settings" option on the phone and then I restored from that backup.  Still no luck but I'm wondering if I just saved the issue in the backup and restored back to it.  I really don't want to do a complete erase and start over, but if there are no other options I will try it.
    Ideas? Thanks in advance.
    EDIT: Photo shows iPhone in iTunes after restore.

    I've been searching for an answer to this very problem for a solid day. Here is what I did that worked for me. No reset. No need to upgrade to more Cloud storage or anything else. I had already deleted out every picture from my phone, including "Messages" and the "recently deleted" album, etc. There really are phantom pictures in there, but the only way to see them and delete them is to:
    Go to Settings
    Date & Time
    Untoggle "Set Automatically"
    Manually change the date back. For example, if today is March 15, 2015, choose August 1, 2014. (You can change it back once we're done)
    Close out of that
    Open "Photos"
    Select "Albums"
    If, like me, you had already cleared out everything from the Camera Roll and "Recently Deleted" folder, you'll smile to see that your "Recently Deleted" folder now has thousands of images back. Those are your phantom photos
    Open it, "Select" and start deleting
    Now, go back into Settings - General - Usage - Storage - Manage Storage - and you'll notice your Photo & Camera is empty if you deleted everything
    I hope this works for everyone and that I saved you all the time I wasted searching for an answer myself -- only to never find one. Now you have the answer.
    I went from barely having any room left on my phone to almost brand new again.

  • Has Infinity killed the phone line? PLEASE advise ...

    Please advise on this connection problem if you can, it is causing much stress for my elderly parents. They are worried about a £129 charge for calling out an engineer, as far as I can see the engineer's visit would qualify as free but I need a more informed view. 
    Apologies if this all appears a bit longwinded but I know details can be important so will tell it as fully as I can!

    My parents had BT Infinity 2 with HomeHub 5 installed a week or so ago. I couldn't be there for the installation so the night before I disentangled their current HomeHub 2 and associated cables from other equipment and left it, all still connected and plugged in and working, in the middle of the spare bedroom floor (where the new installation was to be done) so the engineer would easily see what was already there and what he had to deal with.
    On visiting the evening after the Infinity was installed, I was told that they had been having terrible problems getting their laptop to work wirelessly on the new connection and had earlier been on the phone to BT for an hour trying to sort the issue. When I looked in the bedroom I found the old hub all still plugged in and transmitting, this was apparently confusing the laptop, I completely took out the old hub and then the laptop found the internet no problem.
    So it all appeared good, the next morning my parents then went on holiday for a week and when they got back yesterday they found that there is no phone line connection. The broadband is fine, just no dial tone regular phone line at all. Dialling the home number from a mobile gets the normal ringing tone on the mobile, but nothing happens on the home phone.
    I tried taking the phone base station (Xenon 1500) out of the downstairs extension socket and plugging it directly into the new Infinity wall socket and still nothing. I took the cover off the wall socket and plugged the phone into the test socket inside and their is still nothing.

    Now I'm guessing the the phone line was still previously ok after the Infinity installation because it was working through the old hub and when that hub was disconnected the line went dead at that point but no one noticed becuase they went on holiday right after that. I can't try reassembling the connections the old way to see if the phone works because I'm not even sure where all the cables went to!
    But shouldn't plugging the phone right into the test socket be a clear test of whether there is a fault with the line? But there is no dial tone at all. Is it possible that by disregarding the installed phone line and hub the engineer has neglected to do something to make the new line work for the phone?
    As I said, this is causing quite some worry so any hints would be much appreciated.

    Well I have somehow fixed it, I took out every cable and extension and started over and the phone line is back. I'm not sure but it may have been because the ADSL filters had been left in the line and I have read that the fibre optic line doesn't use them. I really don't know though, so only mention it in case someone in future searches the forum and sees this thread. Try taking out ADSL filters if the installation engineer hasn't done it!

    I'm not sure what you mean by this. What "items"? If you are referring to music, videos or movies, you get only one download per purchase, so if you buy the items again, whether from another device or the same one, yes, you will be charged again. Only apps allow redownloading without additional charge.

    I have BT Infinity at home with the BT modem connected to the phone line and then to a BThub which delivers the wif signal. I have purchased an airport extreme to improve wi fi strength if how do I connect up to hub it states connect modem to WAN on back of Airport Extreme.
    Instructions do not mention connection to BT Hub and the BT modem has only one output which you dicsonnect from Hub and connect to airport extreme leaving. Once you do this Hub has no signal.
    How do I rectify

    you can also set up the Airport extreme to extend the wireless by hitting the wireless tab in the airport menu then click the drop down menu to select extend
    Apple's "extend" function is a proprietary setting that was designed to only work with other Apple routers.
    It would be extremely unlikely that this setting would work with a BT product, or any other manufacturer's product for that matter.
    But, I haven't tested this with a BT product...and I suppose anything is possible.
    Still, I would be extremely surprised if this worked.
    The AirPort Extreme might "join" the BT network if you try this......but the AirPort does not provide any additional wireless signal coverage when it "joins" a wireless network. In fact, it really does nothing when it "joins" a network except enable the USB port.
