Try a reset first: Press and hold both Sleep/Wake and Home buttons until the Apple logo appears.
If the reset doesn't fix it, try a restore:

The sound no longer works on my iPad although when I put headphones in it does. When I press the volume button it comes up as "sound effects" but with no dots that would normally go up or down. The disappearing sound is typically one of three things that could be going on. Read this and see which one applies to your situation.
1. If you have no sound at all, even in the Music App, try rebooting the iPad.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.
2. If you lost sounds for keyboard clicks, games or other apps, email notifications and other notifications, system sounds may have been muted.
System sounds can be muted and controlled two different ways. The screen lock rotation can be controlled in the same manner as well.
Settings>General>Use Side Switch to: Mute System sounds. If this option is selected, the switch on the side of the iPad above the volume rocker will mute system sounds.
If you choose Lock Screen Rotation, then the switch locks the screen. If the screen is locked, you will see a lock icon in the upper right corner next to the battery indicator gauge.
If you have the side switch set to lock screen rotation then the system sound control is in the task bar. Double tap the home button and in the task bar at the bottom, swipe all the way to the right. The speaker icon is all the way to the left. Tap on it and system sounds will return.
If you have the side switch set to mute system sounds, then the screen lock rotation can be accessed via the task bar in the same manner as described above.

3. If you still have no sound at all - except when using headphones ....try cleaning the dock connector opening of the iPad with a soft brush and just a little bit of rubbing alcohol.

I suspect you have a 2G iPod. Those can only go to iOS 4.2.1.

I have always managed to send link from safari using mail Suddenly I no longer can do this and mail just sits with the message in outbox. I changed nothing and all the settings look the same. Very frustrating please can anyone help. I use an aol account with outgoing imap and incoming smtp port 587 with no check in ssl box. AOL will not help, and apple are not interested either. I updated to the new ios 7.1.1 and now my iphone 4S does not ring. It does vibrate, but even though I've checked all my settings and confirmed that it IS set to ring, it doesn't. Anyone else had this happen, and if so, found a solution?

There should be a row of icons at the top of a grey field. if the quarter-moon icon is bright white, tap it. You should do a DFU.
Steps to DFU
Turn your device off. Press and hold the Power button until the Power slider appears. Slide it to the right to turn the device off. Wait for your device to completely power down before continuing.
Plug into your Computer.
Press the Power button. Hold the Power button for 3 seconds.
Press the Home button. After the first 3 seconds, press and hold the Home button while continuing to hold the Power button. Do this for 10 seconds.
Release the Power button. After exactly 10 seconds of holding both buttons, release the Power button but continue holding the Home button. After a few seconds, a message will appear in iTunes letting you know that the device has been detected. The device’s screen will remain blank if done successfully.
Then you should restore it and put all your info back.

After migrating to iPad 2, the sound no longer works in many applications.

I just upgraded from ipad1 to ipad2 and trasferred most of the apps. However, many of them now have no sound. E.g., skype and youtube videos work fine,
but things like the Time Warner Cable app, Al Jazeera app, CNBC app, all now have video with no sound. The volume button doesn't even bring up the usual
floating menu when using those applications. Anyone else notice the same problem?

Hi, I seem to have a similar problem with my IPad. My switch is on rotation lock as it seems it is supposed to be there, but when I receive calls with Skype It rings but I can't hear anyone speaking and I have video in YouTube, but yet again no sound. Any new iCal entry on either iPad or on the iPhone ends up via iCloud on both iPads and iPhone. BUT NOT ON THE MacBookPro. And iCal entry on the MacBookPro does NOT GET SENT to iCloud.com or to either iPad or the iPhone. This is a huge problem for me because I do all my office scheduling on the iPad or iPhone but rely on the MakeBookPro to print out daily client lists.
