i tried the nextChar() method of the scanner class but that doesn't work....

i tried the nextChar() method of the scanner class
but that doesn't work....Correct, the Scanner class doesn't have a nestChar() method.

What you could do is this:
Scanner input = new Scanner(System.in);
try {
    System.out.print("Enter a character: ");
    char c = (input.nextLine()).charAt(0);
} // ...Good luck.
