The Timeline and You (I mean me).

OK . . .
Hacking my way through the After Effects jungle here . . . but don't understand how there's not a main timeline. I come from Flash, which has a main base timeline you throw all your animations into.
After Effects doesn't seem to have that. You just create "compositions", which are pretty much equivelent to Flash's "Movie Clips".
For complicated projects with numerous animations, are you supposed to just create all the peices as compositions, then "stack" all your peices in a master composition and render that?
Seems like there'd be a main timeline per After Effects project file. But apparently not . . .

After Effects is designed for creating shots and short sequences. Any NLE is designed for turning those shots or sequences into a movie. That's the way movies have been made since the first one was cut. Shots are trimmed to a usable length with handles, shots are cut into scenes, scenes are combined into acts, and acts are combined into a finished movie. (Handles are extra frames that you leave at the head and tail of a show or sequence to allow for transitions or timing adjustments.)
In the film days no single segment of any movie could be more than 10 minutes long because it was nearly impossible to handle more than 1000' of 35mm film on a single reel and load that to a set of rewinds or load it on a Moviola. All of the sequences were cut into acts and then the sequences were assembled into 10 minute reels. The 10 minute (sometimes 20 minutes) were loaded up on a couple of projectors and you then screened your creation. What  was created was a clean and efficient workflow dictated by the difficulty of handling the thousands of feet of film. It also turned out that was the best way creatively to make a movie. (35mm film with a standard 4 perf pull down runs 98 feet per minute. 2 hours is nearly 12,000 feet of film. That's never going to fit on a film editors table.)
While modern equipment and NLE's are plenty capable of cutting a single timeline that is 2 or 4 or even 10 hours long, it's not likely you'll end up with a very good product if you start at Act 1, Scene 1, Shot 1 and work you way through to the end. No body is that good. The practice of cutting sequences into scenes, then combining those scenes into an act is still the most efficient way to work your way through a film. I don't know a single professional editor that cuts anything longer than 10 or 15 minutes on a single timeline in a single sequence. Everyone I know that's been in this business long enough to have credentials cuts sequences, does their compositing in a separate app or stacks thing up in a sequence in a timeline, then drags those sequences into the final timeline to make the final changes. That's the most efficient way to work. The biggest advantage of a modern NLE is that you can watch an entire movie in a single timeline. The biggest disadvantage is that it's so tempting to try to create an entire movie in a single time line. It can be done, but changes quickly become a logistics nightmare.
The main timeline you are looking for is in the NLE, and it's much easier to manipulate than any Flash timeline.

Before the 10.0.3 update, you could drag the region further into the timeline and it would automatically create silence before the track plays when you export it. What am I missing? How do I i do this in the current version of Garage band?

what is the problem? Can't you drag the audio region to the right, or is the silence at the beginning of the track missing?
You could mark the measures you want to export by the Cycle region. Then any beginning silence will be included.

  • In an HDV sequence can I "scrub" the timeline and record it via FW to tape?

In an HDV sequence can I "scrub" the timeline and record it via FW to tape?
In standard definition I used to be able to do this via Firewire to my mini-dv deck. But now I am working with the Canon Vixia30, an HDV camera. I'd like to be able to scrub the time line back and forth at varying speeds and record this scrubbing live (rather than doing it with Motion software.) Is there anyway to "record" this action, either onto tape or digitally, while maintaining the HD resolution?
If possible I'd like to figure out how to do this without buying extra equipment. I understand I could get a Matrox MO2 Mini box ($450.) to output the live HD signal, but then how to record the HD signal from the Matrox box? (my camera only has HDMI out, not in.)
    Thank you for your input.

And if you capture your footage as ProRes (as I see discussed in another thread), you cannot output to HDV via firewire. It would be pointless. To go from a lossy format to ProRes to edit...then convert back to HDV. Typically people who shoot HDv never master back to HDV, as it isn't a mastering format.
And yes, the MAX is totally worth it. Compression times faster than RT (meaning less time to compress than the timeline is long...I did 90 min timeline in 75 min yesterday). Worth it? Depends how much your time is worth. TO me, I'd like to have the compression done in 75 minutes opposed to 3-4 hours.

  • I am moving clips to the timeline and they arrive zoomed in.  how can I stop this?

need some help.  I'm moving clips to the timeline and they arrive zoomed in.  I don't want this effect.  How can I stop it?

To expand a little on John's questions and link, every clip and every sequence has its own frame dimensions (and pixel aspect ratio & frame rate). By default, Premiere preserves the dimensions (or "resolution") of a clip when you add it to a sequence. That means that if a clip's resolution is greater than that of the sequence, it will appear to be zoomed in on the frame. Conversely, if the clip is lower res than the sequence, it will appear shrunk, with black borders.
If all of your content is the same resolution (which is the ideal case), then you should use a sequence that matches. The easiest way to do so is the "New Item" method that John refers to--dragging a clip to the Project Panel's New Item button--or, in later releases of PPro CC, dragging it into an empty Timeline panel. If you're working with content of mixed resolution, then you have to pick your poison and scale smaller clips up or larger clips down. The latter option is generally preferred because the former--scaling clips up--often results in unacceptable pixelation.

  • Greetings, I am working in Final Cut Pro 7. In the timeline some clips show as offline. I tried going to sequence and reconnecting to media but it does not work. I can still see the video in the timeline and work with it. It just has the red box.

If the clips are not actually missing, you could try to refresh the timeline by using cmd-0 and then going to the timeline options tab. Then select name only where it says "thumbnail display". Press ok to accept the change, then repeat the process to add thumbnails back to your timeline.

You are running Premiere Elements 10 on Windows 8.1 64 bit. The program works just fine in Windows 8.1 64 bit when run Windows 8.1.
So do not go altering to another operating system. I know this first hand.
The immediate factor that needs ruling in or out is your video card/graphics card. Specifically "Does your Windows 8.1 64 bit use
a NVIDIA GeForce card? If so, that may be your answer. See Announcement at the top of this forum which describe the Premiere
Elements 10 NVIDIA GeForce problem and gives the fix of how to roll back the card's driver version to get Premiere Elements 10
    to work for you.
Once we are assured that you are not afflicted by Premiere Elements 10 NVIDIA GeForce syndrome and also know that your current
video card/graphics card driver is up to date, then we can move on to seek other factors that may be causing the problem.
For your convenience, the following is a copy/paste of the Announcement about the issue as it appears at the top of this forum.
All the links and how tos that you will need are in this announcement.
Premiere Elements 10 NVIDIA Video Card Driver Roll Back
If you are a Premiere Elements 10 user whose Windows computer uses a NVIDIA GeForce video card and you are experiencing
Premiere Elements 10 display and/or unexplained program behavior, then your first line of troubleshooting needs to be rolling
back the video card driver version instead of assuring that it is up to date.
Since October 2013 to the present, there have been a growing number of reports about display and unexplained workflow glitches
specific to the Premiere Elements 10 user whose Windows computer has a NVIDIA GeForce video card. If this applies to you, then
the “user to user” remedy is to roll back the NVIDIA GeForce video card driver as far as is necessary to get rid of the problems. The
typical driver roll back has gone back as far as March – July 2013 in order to get a working Premiere Elements 10. Neither NVIDIA
nor Adobe has taken any corrective action in this regard to date, and none is expected moving forward.
Since October 2013, the following thread has tried to keep up with the Premiere Elements 10 NVIDIA reports

  • If you dont have the sim card that came with the iphone and you resync it how do you get it to turn back on .?

if you dont have the sim card that came with the iphone and you resync it how do you get it to turn back on .?

You have been syncing the iPhone with iTunes on your computer without a SIM card inserted in the iPhone for how long?
If the iPhone says connect to computer, this means there is a problem with your iPhone that requires restoring the iPhone with iTunes. As already provided, not having a SIM card inserted in an iPhone does not prevent or shouldn't prevent syncing the iPhone with iTunes. Depending on the iPhone model, it is required in order to restore the iPhone with iTunes.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3406
To re-activate an iPhone 3G or iPhone 3GS that displays the "Connect to iTunes" screen:
Insert a SIM card from the carrier with which you used your phone. Note: If you are using the same carrier, you can use the activated SIM card from your new device to do this. If your device is unlocked by your carrier, you can use any SIM card.
Connect the iPhone 3G or iPhone 3GS to iTunes on a computer connected to the Internet.
iTunes will then activate the device. You can remove the SIM card at this point and use the iPhone as if it were an iPod touch.

In older version the menu would stay on the screen.

What computer operating system is your Premiere Elements 12 running on? If you have not already, be sure to update 12 to 12.1, using an opened project's Help Menu/Update.
But to the immediate questions, assuming Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 64 bit....
    1. No, it is what it is. But, are you applying the same transition each time? If so, then highlight/select all the clips involved (all at one time), then Timeline Menu/Apply Default Transition will do just that for the highlighted/selected clips.
To highlight/select more than one clip at a time, hold down the Shift key of the computer main keyboard and then click on each clip that you want in the group selection
    or
with your mouse cursor draw a rectangle around the clips that you want to select
    2. Are you using the Premiere Elements 12/12.1 Expert workspace Pan and Zoom Tool? Or the pan or zoom presets under fx Effects/Presets/? With those you can do pan or zoom, not pan and zoom.
Or, are you in the Elements Organizer 12 Slideshow Editor using the pan and zoom effect there? Or, are you using keyframing the Motion Scale property for zoom and the Motion Position property for pan?
Are you asking about photos with landscape or portrait orientation?
The pan and zoom tool does one photo at a time.
Have you read the Adobe documentation on the Pan and Zoom Tool?

Please review and clarify and then we can get into greater details on this.
    Thanks.

  • Display metadata instead of clip name on the clips in the timeline and in the source monitor

Is there a way to display metadata instead of clip name on the clips in the timeline and in the source monitor? Clip names are usually set by the camera and are of no use to me. What i would like the clip and the source monitor to display is the name of the shot from the metadata. That's,in my opinion, a very useful info when you're editing a film.  If that feature doesn't exist, is there a way to batch rename clips based on metadata?

    thanks
is that new or was that always there. Not to sure if I have tried that in the past
anyway it helped and will makes things much faster
one other question maybe you have an answer to that too. it seems both Audio tracks are independ when putting on keyframes is there a way when using keyframes in the time line that it affect both channels of audio for example a1 an a2
once again thanks for your help

  • CS4 hangs in the timeline and the program window

This is going to be a difficult post since I'm not sure how to articulate the problem.
To begin - I have been using Premier for many years, so I don't believe my difficulties are the result of being a newbie.
I installed CS4 a few months ago, but have been heavily involved with project using CS3 and therefore have not fired up CS4 until recently. The problem is that after placing my clips on the timeline I can scrub and play them. Once I begin to make edits however, I scrub along the timeline and nothing happens - I don't see any visual changes in the monitor.
If I wait a while then the functionality comes back (but only for a few moments) and then everything freezes again.
This is really frustrating. So much so that I have gone back to usign CS3 since it actually works.
I don't know how to fix this problem, nor do I know if others have the same problem.
    Any help will be appreciated.

    Some troubleshooting tips.
    Cheers

  • General Error; failed to render the timeline and failed to export HD mpg2

I have searched for the posts if there is same issue I'm having on the forum, and it seems it's similar yet not really...
So I decided to post one.
I have 2100 sequential frames in jpgs. (each jpg size is 1280x720)
I open "image sequence" in QT 7.04 with 29.97 fps, then save it as MOV in external HD with firewire.
Then I import it into FCP 5.04 on Timeline.
    Timeline setting is
    Frame Size : 1280x720 HDTV 720P (16:9)
Pixel Aspect Ratio : Square uncheck Anamorphic 16:9
    Filed Dominance : None
    Editing Timebase : 29.97
Quick time Vieo Setting : Compressor -DVCPRO HD 720P60 Quality 100%
After I place the mov file on the timeline, the Red Bar shows up.
I tried to render the timeline, it will only try to render to 3% and stop, and "general error" pops up.
I tried to use Compressor 2.01 with HD mpg2 preset to export out as HD mpg2 format, and it will fail to export.
After I read several posts on here, I was wondering I might have corrupted mov...
I re-create MOV file from QT and import in FCP5 and do the same... but I still get the same error...
I tried to re-start computer and tried, no luck..
Then I was wondering maybe some of the jpgs is corrupted...
I'm not sure how to check which jpg file is corrputed since there is 2100 frames in directory.
It is able to show all jpgs as thumbnail images..
    So my questions here.. are...
If I do anything wrong during the step?
If not... what's wrong? why i can't render the timeline, and why i can't export to HD?
Or if there is a "way" to figure out what file is corrupted..?
This is not first time I have the same problem, I even tried to test out with 10,000 jpgs frames and create mov ... and import in FCP5..etc...
I had no problem with render and export... so I don't think it's the "HD length" issue...
If anyone have the same issue or know what's wrong... please help!!!
    Thank you,

I downloaded iview Media pro free trial version to catalog the image to see if there is any corrupted jpgs.
Unfortunately, it didn't find any corrupted jpgs.
I also tried to change the sequence setting, under "QuickTime Video Setting" from "DVCPRO HD 720p60" to "HDV 720p30" (since I found out the frame size for DVCPRO HD 720p60 is 960x720 with 59.99 fps).
The result I get after I placed mov on timeline, it used to give red bar, it gave me orange bar... which made me be able to render the timeline without problem.
However, Compressor still is not able to export HD mpg2.
Then I changed QuickTime Video Setting from HDV 720p30 to "photo-jpg", the bar is now grey, but still not able to export to HD mpg2.
    now I don't really don't know what's going on.
anyone can suggest me what else I can try and see...??

    Help!!!!
New user to FCPx. I lost the timeline and footage I have been editing for 5 days. Can I go back 2 hours in FCPx to retrieve it or is it lost forever?

What version are you using? Were you editing inside a project, or did you open a clip into the timeline?

  • Everytime I drag a clip onto the timeline and it like scales up?

Okay, so ya know when you drag a clip onto the timeline and it asks you if you wanna change the sequence settings or keep them. I usually keep them but this time I checked dont ask again and now its zoomed in and I feel stupid!

W cant help much with feeling stupid...
But create a new sequence and start again is what we might advise.
