The Unlimited Con (aka Fair Usage Policy)

I got one of the dreaded "you are nearing your download limit and we are going to slap you and put your speed down" messages today.
As ever it is from a "do not reply to this e-mail address" type address as obviously they couldn't deal with the amount of mails they got back.
In the mail they told me that they will throttle me back to 1Mb. I have written to them to congratulate them on this as this is faster than I get at many times during the day anyway and if they can do this I would be grateful.
I am really really mad with them as the service I get from BT is woeful. I have given up complaining about my download speeds over the last few years. What really sticks in my throat is that the exchange we have is in need of huge moderisation (as we can't access any other providers premium services) and the lines in my estate were put into the ground unconduited and are breaking down regularily. BT refuse to sort the problem properly. It is well know that when we have a problem with our phones in this area and when we contact BT a red Batphone style thing rings and all the local engineers dive under their desks.
My main problem is that I have the following connected to my network:
4 laptops
3 iPhones
1 Apple TV
1 iMac
1 PS3
2 Xboxes
1 iPad
Whilst I appreciate that not all of them are connected at the one time, having all the family in at the one time can be quite destructive on the bandwith.
What I would like answered is the following:
1. How can I make BT fix our local lines propely. I am paying as much as anybody else and their infrastructure is woeful.
2. Is calling the product that was sold to me as "Unlimited" not illegal. I am thinking about lodging a complaint with the ASA regarding it. It is NOT unlimited. It should be advertised as Unlimited but Limited. If BT advertised their product properly there would be no comeback. If there were no companies that delivered Unlimited services then it may be different but there are companies that are truly "Unlimited".
3. How can I get BT to update the local exchange so that I can access other providers? I am paying more due to their imcompetence.
4. Can someone guide me to the service (programmes or websites) where BT give you access to your bandwith totals (real time) so that you can monitor it.

You can still download as much as you can only a lot slower during peak times off peak will not be restricted.
Thanks for this explanation. I had taken it that it was at all times.
As I said in the first place it will be great if they throttle me to 1Mb at peak times as it will be better half the time than I am getting anyway!!!!!!!!!

  • Extremely Unhappy With the Fair Usage Policy

Can someone please answer me this, what is the point of having a 20mbps unlimited connection when there is infact a cap of 100gb pm? It's such a rip off my blood is boiling!!!
I've gone over the limit apparently and had my internet connection butchered as a result. The assistant on the phone said it's a "slap on the wrist" I seriously thought what an unprofessional cow and wanted to tell her to f*** off if I'm honest. I don't expect such rudimentary terminology to be used on me when I'm a paying customer, it's outrageous.
Now I read the fair usage policy and find out why my BitTorrent speeds have been so terrible, even before the recent capping of my speed. On a well seeded torrent (2000+ seeders) in a fully port-forwarded uTorrent I am achieving 30KBPS. After midnight they improve but still only averaging around 300KBPS. They throttle P2P as part of the draconian policy! Use GLASNOST (google it) to see what horrible things they are doing with your P2P!
Can someone explain to me how you justify limiting a so called "unlimited" bandwidth at a rate that is only 60GB more than your capped packages? This is clearly false advertising and your fair usage policy is the worst I have ever encountered. Either this is resolved or you can forget it, I'm cancelling my subscription, you will not get another penny out of me, and you can take it up with my lawyer.

They say its not limited as you are only crippled during peak hours and can down as much as you like in the remaining hours **bleep**

Is the Fair Usage Policy still 300gb?
The reason I ask is that I've just checked and I'm at 294gb up until 23:59 on the 27th yet I haven't received any speed restriction warning emails this month when you usually get a mail at 240gb.

Re: BT TO SCRAP 300GB LIMIT!.
    on 08-03-2011 16h27
    Hi everyone
Yes, this is true! BT Total Broadband and BT Infinity customers will benefit from the removal of Fair Usage Policy (FUP) controls when they begin to be removed from April 2011. Once removed, heavy user customers will be able to download/stream as much as they wish without having their speeds restricted.
BT will remove the FUP controls currently applied to customers with ‘atypical’ usage. Today atypical users are restricted at 300GB usage and account for less than 0.5% of the BT customer base. BT will not target any individuals with restrictions based on usage levels. However, we still have traffic management policies that will restrict certain applications / protocols, such as P2P, when the network is busy.
As BT continues to invest in the network and network bandwidth we can now remove these restrictions and ensure the experience of the wider customer base.
(Note that charges will still apply for going over limits on BT Total Broadband Options 1&2 and BT Infinity Option 1 but traffic will not be managed.)
    Thx

  • Fair Usage Policy On Total Broadband Option 3?

I know the usage on BT Total Broadband isn't actually unlimited and it has a fair usage policy. This used to be 100GB but since BT Infinity came in I can't seem to find the policy on BT's site. Has it changed?

    Hi.
The 100GB figure has never been on the fair use policy site, and neither does the new figure of 300GB appear (it's been that since middle/late August).

  • Received" Fair usage policy violation warning" ema...

I just received an email from [email protected],and the subject was Fair Usage policy violation warning. This is ludicrous!
Basically the email says that after spying on my account, well they used the term"monitoring" which is ridiculous. they came to the conclusion that I was abusing the fair usage policy.
    Firstly I felt that my personal privacy was violated by being spied on by Skype;
Secondly , the package I bought was 10000 mins phone to call worldwide, the reason why I purchase this particular package is becoz I was looking for a pair of Valentino lady heels, in order to have a bigger chance in finding them, I would have to call up as many stores as I can. And since this is what the package offers,I don't see what's wrong with me calling all the boutiques and department store branches. What I don't understand is how could calling stores in different locations has been judged as abusing fair usage policy?
This just became very personal, also I think what Skype did and the email going thru length to explain their suspection is absolutely rude and absurd.
I demand that Skype should stop violating SKype user's personal privacy and spying on their accounts. There're so many software out there right now, which would probably offer more service and respect for the consumer, and I'm sure Skype will lose more users if they keep on spying on our accounts.
And I would really love to contact Skype customer service team over phonecall or email, unfortunately I've looked through SKype entire website, and there's no info related to that. If anyone knows how to contact Skype,do share please. I'll really appreciate that.
    Thanks in advance!

I am using Skype premium Credit which allows me to make calls from my Mobile and Laptop to make unlimited calls to 50 countries. Sometime my wife uses my laptop to make call to my home country as well. Recently she went to Bangladesh and tried calling me from there few times. She came back two weeks ago and now nobody uses it from outside Australia.
But last week I received the similar emails from Skype like yours but I am not sure what they are identifying as fair use. I have read the fair use policy and I didn't do anything that is contradicting the policy. I have tried to get support related email address from Skype web but failed. Is there anyone who knows any contact info so that we can raise the issue with?
Another friend of mine was saying that first he received an email from Skype warned him of fair-use violation who is on a 600min per months subscription but hardly use few hundreds min and his service has been terminated temporarily the next day.
So if someone cal tell us what is going on and why they are doing it.

    Hi,
My Fair Usage Policy - 6 hours per day is about cross the limit. Is there any ways to reset it before GMT 0000hrs

    Unfortunately no
Otherwise if everyone could reset it on their own then there is no point for the restriction.

  • Fair usage policy

Does BT`s fair usage policy work both ways?? In the months when i dont use  Broadband as much, why isnt this discounted off the months when i do? Surely on a fair usage policy this should apply!

Nice idea but its their usage policy and is fair to them so comes under the title of "who said life was fair"

Would like to know how it is determined for a violation.
Got an email on the subject line just now.
To me, i am calling only the regular numbers and in an emergencey now, calls are frequent and lenghtier. Most of the months so far my regular usage level is far below the minimum level and it can be verified.
Let me know what is the basis for the above notification. Is it based on the number os minutes consumed?
Awaiting the quick response to fix this!

  • Skype terminated because of fair usage policy

    Skype team,
I got a notification today morning that because of unfair usage my skype Id would be terminated and I would no longer be able to use the unlimited India calling option. I have been a user of Skype for the last 2.5 yrs and there is nothing absolutely that I would do or have done to violate the policies of Skype.
This is the only means of communication with my family in India and if this is being revoked I would be helpless.
Also I have a Skype credit of 31 USD. Would like to know what would happen to that?
Thank you in advance and I would wait for your response eagerly.
    Regards,
    Vignesh

Hi and welcome to the Skype Community,
Please keep in mind that our subscription fair use policies do not allow a subscription to be shared amongst multiple users, e.g. you should not give your Skype password to someone else to use your subscription. If you haven't done that I'd recommend to change your Skype password ASAP.

  • Java Kernel and the "Unlimited Strength Java Crypto Extension Policy Files"

Is Java Kernel able to download and install on-demand the "Unlimited Strength Java(TM) Cryptography Extension Policy Files"?
Currently, I have to instruct the users of my applications to download those policy files from Sun's website and follow the installation instruction. I haven't received any positive feedback from my users when I told them to do this task. I understand them. Manual installation of this files really suck especially for lay men.
So, with Java Kernel, what's the plan? Can I hope for something better?

I believe, for US export-control reasons, the Unlimited Strength JCE policy files are never automatically downloadable by the JVM - they have to be explicitly downloaded and configured. However, you could download it yourself, configure the JVM with the policy files, create your own ZIP/JAR file and internally distribute it to your users through your intranet. But, if you do this, you are responsible for complying with the applicable export laws of your country, and perhaps, Sun licensing terms for redistributing the JVM.

  • Subscription and the SUPER 'fine print' fair usage...

I recently purchase the unlimited US and Canada package and low and behold, Skype's idea of 'UNLIMITED" is not what I'd deem unlimited.  The subscription is limited to 50 different called numbers a day, or 6 hours of usage.  So, then that would mean, Not UNLIMITED, wouldn't it?????????????????? I'm a bit peeved and would like to know, how, am I to use the **bleep** service UNLIMITEDLY?
I work from home, as an appointment setter.  I call long distance, as I live 35 minutes north of Dallas, Texas.  I only work 25 hours a week and the only phone company that is available to me is Century Link, formally Embarq.  This co. Has the worst service options for those of us living in the out here.  The maximum internet they offer us is a DSL connection download speed of 1.41 Mbs,(1440kbps) and an uploading speed of .47Mbps (480Kbps) this is $39.99 a month, and for 'unlimited long distance' through Century Link is $49.99 per month.
So, what's a girl to do?  I hate to buy Skype credit, but if that's necessary then so be it.  I'm curious as to what, if any, other subscriptions, either home, or business, are available to buy real UNLIMITED US phone calling.
    Can someone help me PLEASE???!!
