There is no 64bit OS kernel(?)

I was trying to boot my Macbook into 64bit OS kernel mode by doing "6" + "4" at startup. I'm running 10.6.1. To verify this was successful, I click the top left Apple, About this Mac then more info. Next I click Software, which gives an overview. 64-bit Kernel and Extensions is no.
I then called Apple to find out why that didn't work. From them, it only works for OS X Server. Otherwise, 10.6 is always a 32bit kernel. However, my dual Intel chips are 64bit and so are some of the apps. Weird. I always thought the kernel had to be 64bit for the apps to use 64bit.
I was originally trying the "6" + "4" boot option to see what would happen to VMware Fusion, since people have complained it doesn't work in 64bit mode...what ever 64bit mode is. I then see replies to those complaints that you have to boot into 32bit mode, which of course isn't an option unless you are on Server. My VMware Fusion works fine.
Is there anyone on a Macbook Aluminum that can't run VMware Fusion or that can do the "6" + "4" thing? Because if so, that would conflict with what Apple is saying.

No, but 64-bit booting isn't enabled for some systems even though they have 64-bit processors. Exactly what and why hasn't been made clear
I think the "why" depends on the particular machine. In the case of my Mac Pro the problem is EFI: it is 32-bit. A 32-bit EFI can not boot a 64-bit kernel. There are some people who are hoping that a firmware update can fix this. Talking to my brother, who is intimately familiar with such arcana as chipsets and computer architectures, I got a much more pessimistic answer. He suspects that the Intel chipset used by EFI simply will not support 64-bit. Interestingly he is running Windows 7 on his same generation Mac Pro as mine in 64-bit without a problem, although he did have a problem getting 64-bit drivers for everything initially. He is currently contemplating doing some major surgery to get a 64-bit Ubuntu Linux install to work as well. Evidently this requires something called "rEFIt" and changes to the boot loader, all of which is far beyond my technical level!
Anyway, I did find a Terminal command to find out if the problem in booting a particular Mac into 64-bit is EFI. Just copy and paste the command into Terminal. Here's what I get:
NoobiX:~ francine$ ioreg -l -p IODeviceTree | grep firmware-abi
| | "firmware-abi" = <\"EFI32">
If you have 64-bit EFI then you may be able to boot a 64-bit kernel Snow Leopard, although I gather even this is not absolutely certain, and that some laptops still won't do that thing.

Arghh! I hate the Jive software and the way it does NOT handle code! Ignore the forward slash in the "EFI32" entry.

Please help!  I try to connect to the Internet but appears inscription There is no expansion of kernel PPP. Yesterday I used internet through the same connection- Dsl pppoe. Wi fi cannot connect too. On ipad and iphone it is work.

    That's odd.
Try this: Unplug your Time Capsule and your router. On your MBP, click the Wi-Fi icon and select "Open Network Preferences".
Click the lock icon to authenticate, then click the "gear" and select "set service order". Wherever AirPort (or Wi-Fi - I forget what Snow Leopard calls it) appears, drag it elsewhere in the list. Click OK, then Apply, then power up your router and TC.
If that doesn't result in any change, repeat the above but try making the service(s) you do not need "inactive".
The purpose of this is to reset or at least change your Network Preferences, which somehow got confused upon upgrading to SL.

  • 64bit x86 kernel ddi_dma_mem_alloc got fail

    Hi Dear All,
I had met 64bit x86 sol10 kernel ddi_dma_mem_alloc fail when driver load after system boot.
I had spend much time to research, but When I reboot this system, my scsi driver attach ok and have not got ddi_dma_mem_alloc fail.
    It is a tricky thing.
This driver work fine at 32bit x86 sol10kernel,
and have not met this issue.
I only share my "bad" experience.

Not conforming to the requirements of the device may
be more critical than just being non-optimum. The
bind may fail. It will do so, for example, if the
address is not aligned correctly. Your code must be
responsible for making sure the memory does conform to
the requirement, anfd your code better be prepared to
deal with the errors that result if they do not. Thanks, Richard. Clean failure I can live with - my worry was that it might silently do something nasty, like DMAing to the wrong bit of memory. I should hope this very unlikely - it ought to be possible to pass any random address to the bind (by accident, perhaps) and get a clean failure if the address is unsuitable.
Note that you are doing something unusual. When
doing something unusual, you are more likely to run
into cases not anticipated by the DDI designers. You
can never really be sure that your code will work
correctly on combinations of platforms and Solaris
versions that you have not tested.Well understood - I've been on all sides of this sort of situation a few times. In my experience, the architects and high-level designers often have a totally generic approach, but the implementors sometimes only think (and test) in terms of how they expect it to be used normally. Unusual things can look like they ought to work, then get caught out by some implementation detail or bug.
Many thanks for the reply. Do you have any thoughts on my other posting about who is reponsible for looking after alignment and address range limitations with DMA? Your opinion would be welcome.

  • Will there be a 64bit Flash Player?

Since Windows 7 has been out for several months now and running 64bit, is there a 64bit Flash Player in the near future?

The reason the question has been asked again and again is because we have been browsing these forums for years (in my case, at least 4 years) looking for a better answer.  Adobe's claims of commitment to a true 64-bit release are about as believable as BP's claims of commitment to cleaning up the Gulf.  Perhaps we need to rephrase the question.
Do you have any 32-bit PC's in-use at your home or office?
Do you have any friends who use 32-bit PC's ?
Have you ever met anyone in passing who is using a 32-bit PC ?
I think I may still have some 32-bit processors and boards sitting on the shelf that I haven't thrown out yet, but that's just laziness on my part.  Maybe I can fire up a Commodore 64 emulator and run Flash Player on that.  Sorry for the sarcasm but in all fairness ADOBE made the claim years ago that 64-bit flash was in the pipeline.  Its borderline false-advertising..although FP is free the content creation tools are not, and I am sure many developers are expecting that their content will be available to eyeballs with as little hassle as possible.

  • _y_p_w - you out there? (re: DVD and kernel panics)

    Hey, y_pw,
Sorry for the public positing, but Apple's forums don't seem to give the option to send a message directly to someone.
Are you still kernel panic free on your MacBook with DVDs? I'm just curious, because you're the only report I have that doesn't seem to have the problem. Tonight I got a chance to try my RAM in a friend's 2.2 SR MacBook and after some work got it down to about 1.2GB of free RAM and sure enough got it to kernel panic on me.
After my logic board was replaced I went back to the Apple store and demonstrated that my MacBook still kernel paniced. The genius started running some X11 stuff and got a full system hang. Mouse still moved, but otherwise unresponsive. After reboot, log seemed to indicate hang due to graphics. I researched the issue a bit and found similar reports of some folks getting kernel panics with a flavor of Unix or linux also caused by the graphics driver with identical log entries as my system hang from X11.
It all seems to point to a driver issue, so I'm trying to figure out how you seem invulnerable.
    Thanks!

Well - I tried doing what I could to max out memory use. I've got a 2x2GB memory kit from OCZ. Right now Activity Monitor reports 1.15GB free, about 808 MB wired, 1.71 GB active, and about 325 MB inactive. I've got three web browsers active (each with CSTV's GameTracker loaded), as well as assorted Java and Flash ads on each browser. I'm running a high-def MPEG clip on VLC, about 60 photos loaded in Graphic Converter, and have the Office 2008 versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint open. iTunes is also continuously playing.
I'm also playing my Toy Story DVD using DVD Player version 5.0.1. I don't know, but I can't get it to crash. Some of the applications are ridiculously slow (VLC and DVD Player are dropping frames) and the fan is cranking at 6200 RPM. Still - everything is up even though I realize I've probably approached this machine's practical limits. Actually VLC just quit - probably because of all the dropped frames.
I don't know why, but the machine remains up and running. As I quite applications, everything seems to be approaching normal. I'm still using Safari and DVD Player still has Toy Story up.

  • 64bit kernel with 32bit userspace + pacman integration

There have been quite some questions about this topic. Sometimes leading even leading to frustration.
Luckily, a nice writeup was made here with a nice addition to integrate this nicely here.
Since there is no 32bit PAE kernel distributed by ArchLinux, using a 64bit kernel to enable NX is the only option. But since it only has 1G of memory, I do not wish to install a 64bit userspace + 32bit multilib.
However, the *exact* steps have been quite a guess (and there is no wiki). That is why I'm writing this down.
Let's start with the main configuration: pacman.conf
We need to comment out the Architecture stanza. It's funky. Why? Because it actually has two unrelated purposes:
As a documented feature, it provides protection against installing incorrect packages from another architecture
The undocumented feature is the fact that it's literal value is used to replace '$arch' variables in repo URL's
    #Architecture = auto
Syncing your local repo's just broke as '$arch' is no longer defined (try it now). I ditched /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist and did this with my remote repo URL's:
    # custom repo for 64bit kernel
    [x86_64-kernel]
    Server = file:///home/$user/x86_64-kernel/
    [core]
    Server = http://ftp.nluug.nl/pub/os/Linux/distr/archlinux/core/os/i686
    [extra]
    Server = http://ftp.nluug.nl/pub/os/Linux/distr/archlinux/extra/os/i686
    [community]
    Server = http://ftp.nluug.nl/pub/os/Linux/distr/archlinux/community/os/i686
Notice the new custom repo at the top of the file. Adapt your pacman.conf to contain this custom repo as well. Make sure you place it before the [core] repo or whatever other repo is providing your current kernel. The order matters.
Furthermore, I rewrote the configuration file to not depend on variable substitution. One could argue that substituting $repo was unnecessary, but that does not really matter.
Second, we setup the repository as a normal user. This can be done by a regular user in a safe way since the packages are all signed. So tampering with packages will not work. You could even dedicate a cron script with a dedicated user to this purpose (which is overkill).
    mkdir /home/$user/x86_64-kernel/
Third, we use a small script to handle this custom repo. We place it at /home/$user/x86_64-kernel.sh . Subsitute the variable R_REPO with your favorite ArchLinux mirror. Make sure this URL points to a 64bit core repository.
    #!/bin/bash
    set -e
    set -o pipefail
    L_REPO=/home/$user/x86_64-kernel/
    R_REPO=http://ftp.nluug.nl/pub/os/Linux/distr/archlinux/core/os/x86_64/
    cd "$L_REPO"
    wget -nv "$R_REPO"/core.db -O core.db
    DESC=$(tar -tf core.db | grep '^linux-[0-9.-]*/desc$' | tail -n1)
    KERNELPKG=$(tar -xf core.db "$DESC" -O | grep -A1 '^%FILENAME%$' | tail -n1)
    if ! [[ -f "$KERNELPKG" ]]; then
    wget -nv "$R_REPO"/"$KERNELPKG"
    wget -nv "$R_REPO"/"$KERNELPKG".sig
    repo-add -q x86_64-kernel.db.tar.gz "$KERNELPKG"
    fi
Now we are in fact done with the configuration. Substiture $user for your current user in all the sections and do the following:
    # create repo, this script also updates it when newer 64bit kernels arrive
    user $ bash /home/$user/x86_64-kernel.sh
    # update pacman's database
    root # pacman -Syy
    # install 64bit kernel
    root # pacman -S linux
Pacman will be able to update this kernel as long as you run x86_64-kernel.sh every once in a while. I put it in XFCE session startup to run at each session login. You could do this with cron as well.
I tested what hapenned if something went wrong with this repo. Pacman handles this very nicely actually. If you delete the repository, it will complain but not immediatly install the 32bit kernel given you have a 64bit already installed with this repo.
A final note: If you build a lot of packages you could run into trouble. Someone in the forums made a good suggestion about that here -> ("init=linux32 /usr/lib/systemd/..."). This is a nice system-wide way to trick your buildsystem into believing it's a 32bit machine. This is sometimes required. I don't use as I don't have a problem with it. But keep this in mind.
EDIT: Fixed update script to overwrite core.db and not create new ones like core.db.n .

That is nice. Pity I did not know about this earlier. However, my method allows me to stick with the official packages. Thanks though!

  • [SOLVED] Kernel 2.6.27, low performance.

    Hi
I just upgraded my kernel to 2.6.27, and after the reboot the result was awfull. The overall performance of the system is lower than my old Pentium II. I am using fluxbox and I am hardly switching between wirtual desktops. Even without X, compiling the fluxbox took me more than 5 times than it was before.  A friend of mine is having the same laptop as mine, and he installed the brand new Ubuntu, which is witn 2.6.27 kernel too, and he is having the same issue. He booted with the old kernel (he had both because he just upgraded the system) and everithing is fine, but since I am with a brand new installation, I am unable to boot with another kernel. Is there something wrong with the kernel, and can I install older kernel. My machine is HP Compaq 6715s. There are no processess that are taking any CPU and the RAM is 80% free.
    Regards.

  • 64 bit kernel cabable iMac won't boot in 64 bit kernel when prompted in Mountain Lion.

Hey guys. I am using a 24" iMac from the March 2009 line. I am aware that this Mac is capable of running in 64 bit kernel mode, but the default is 32. When Snow Leopard hit, I was able to boot in 64bit mode with the appropriate prompt in the terminal and also via the 6 and 4 keys at startup. I could also verify this in the system profiler under software.
In mountain Lion, this porion of the profil is missing under software and I am unable to verify that it is running in 64 bit kernel. I used a 3rd party app to determine the kernel and it still says that I am runnin in 32bit kernel. Now either I am, by default running 64bit and the ap is wrong, or there is something that I am missing here. I am attaching a photo of the app I used. Thanks for any help any of you may provide.

I'd doubt the 3rd party App.
There is no 32 bit kernel in Mountain Lion.
You can check in Activity Monitor.

  • 32bit and 64bit oracle 9.2

    Dear Guru's,
I have SAP 4.7 ext 200 with oracle 9.2 and windows 2003 standard edition all these are 32bit .Now my client wants to buy new hardware which is 64bit to implement the same version mentioned above.for SAP4.7 64bit kernel is available in SMP but I didnt find oracle 9.2 64bit .Please advice whether SAP 4.7 ext 200 can be installed with 64bit kernel and oracle 9.2 64bit available(OS win2003 64bit) on 64bit hardware  or all the OS and SAP with oracle 32bit on 64bit hardware should we choose.
    Best Regards,
    Sanju

Well... those are the rumours - which are just that.
Itanium is a 64bit processor - yes - but it´s a totally different architecture. Those programs will NOT run on an Intel Xeon processor. The difference between those two is, that one is IA64 (Itanium-2) and the other is X86_64 (also called x64).
You will need an installation CD set for that x86_64 (or x64) - NOT for Itanium if you have an Intel Xeon processor.
    Read the following notes:
    960769 - Windows: Migration from 32-bit to 64-bit (x86_64)
    931024 - FAQ: 64-bit platforms for Windows
Especially the second will explain the differences.
It makes no sense to install 32bit (SAP-) application software on a 64bit operating system since there are native 64bit binaries to use, without them, you won´t benefit of the 64bit hardware. You need to check, however, that 3rd party software (backup etc.) has also 64bit clients for your combination.

  • Why does displaydriver not work on my G530 with windows 7 64bit?

    Hi,
I installed my Windows 7 64 bit and all driver works except the displaydriver. Does anyone know how to solve the problem? Following messages comes by trying to install the existing driver from Lenovo:
    http://img691.imageshack.us/img691/4537/fehlermeldungz.jpg
    http://img693.imageshack.us/img693/8244/fehlermeldung2.jpg
    http://img716.imageshack.us/img716/5597/systeme.jpg
I don`t know what to do. It`s not possible to change the brightness of my display.
    Thank you for helping
    Christoph
p.s.: does anyone know how to post pictures directly?

I downloaded the driver here: http://consumersupport.lenovo.com/en/DriversDownloads/drivers_list.aspx?CategoryID=10 There is a 64bit driver and I tryed to install it. Than the popup I already posted came on my screen. I also checked Nvidia and Microsoft Update, but they always say I need special driver for Hotkeys and so on from Lenovo. ahrgh...what can I do?
    Thanks for helping me

  • IMac Mid 2010 kernel panic after wake up from sleep mode

    Hello.
One month ago starting my iMac Mid 2010 occasionally goes to kernel panic. When I click on mouse or press any key, system starting up, but very very slowly, (time on logon screen stay same without refresh) and after few minutes (from 1 - 10 minutes) kernel panic message is appear on screen. I have Mac OS 10.7.5 version installed.
Is there any tool to debug what is wrong. Windows OS has WinDebuger to detaily look inside to core dump and analyze it and in my experience almost allways is possible to detect root of problem.
First of all i was try HW diagnostic from DVD, succesfully passed. Then I run Permission Repair procedure, there were many folders and files with different ACL as system expected.
It is possible that graphic card driver is wrong or has bug from my point of laic view.
I have minimum application with kext installed into system:
    VMware fusion
    NTFS-3g ( long time same version )
There is part of long kernel panic message:

  • Very Odd Kernel Panic On Boot Up

I just today had a one-of-a-kind kernel panic on bootup from a completely shutdown machine. The box is a PowerMac G4, Mirrored Drive Door, dual-core 1.25 GHz, OS X 10.4.9, 512 MB factory installed RAM and 512 User-installed Ram for a total of 1GB. Have
Energized computer. Diverted attention. When I turned around to sit down and get to work, I was confronted with the following screen: There was the multi-lingual Kernel panic box on the gray screen, the "throbber" that usually rotates beneath the dark-gray Apple logo rotating away, and "overprinted" on all this was the "international no" symbol centered is a round-cornered translucent box (similar to what you see when you use the keyboard to alter the volume backing up the speaker icon), in the absolute center of the screen.
I powered down the computer and powered it up. Boot without a problem.
I then restarted the computer. Restarted flawlessly.
After using it for a little while, I did a full shut down and restart, used it for a little while, and shut down and restarted again. All these evolutions completed without failure or problems of any kind.
I've verified the startup disk successfully, SMART status is "Verified" for this hard disk, and have performed permissions repair successfully–with no indications of any permissions having to be repaired. All seems to be working normally and well.
Has anyone ever seen anything like this? I've Googled for this problem, and searched these forums, and have found nothing to compare to this.
For general edification, I've included the output of system.log for what looks like the time of the first failed boot and the boot immediately after. For the record, my two peripherals in constant use are a LaCie 60GB FW HD and a Wacom Intuos tablet, which is my primary somatic pointing device at this time–this log excerpt follows.
I cannot locate any report on this event in any kernel log. I also put the machine to sleep to check for kernel panic on wakeup from sleep (no problems there either). And the 512MB user-installed RAM is a Crucial memory module that has been in use for at least a year with no problems.
Thanks in advance for any insights.
    Sam Klein.

Well, there's the prob: this kernel panic did not leave a log report.
The last one before that was 17 Oct, 07; the last one before that was 26 Jan, 07.
I just don't seem to have a panic log for this event. The system log is the best I could come up with.

  • Kernel panic OSX 10.10.1 on MacBook Pro (Retina 15", end 2013)

    Hello there,
I had my third kernel panic in five days and don't know how to find out what is causing it. It always occurred after some hours in sleep mode with the lid open.
I hope there is anyone who can help me out. Here's my panic report:

  • [SOLVED]Install kernel failed and how can I repair my system.

In order to get suspend function, I try to compile a new kernel, I used the second method in http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ker … rom_Source with makepkg and pacman. I download 2.6.31 kernel and makepkg is OK, but pacman tell me /lib/***(lots of
files name) can not be overwritten. I'm not very happy, what make matter worse, I reboot my
system, it seems it lost some modules, it do not mount ext4 partition and can not find Ethernet.
I have lots of data in this system, I could not erase the hard disk and  re-install the whole system. Is there a good way to repair my system?
my system have 5 partitions: /,/boot,/usr, /home, /var, I hope these partition can be all reserved as possible.
    Thank you in advance.

First off - you should _never_ use the default name when rolling your own kernel, _always_ give it a unique name! (this way, you can always go back to your previous, working kernel/modules) - by the way - have you tried booting the fallback kernel?
One safe way of keeping your own data - boot from a live cd/usb stick without involving the current OS at all. Then use an external usb-drive (hey - these days you can buy a 1TB usb drive for less than 100 bucks - it's a no-brainer!) and copy all the data you are concerned about to the usb-drive.
Once that is done you can start experimenting - or just plain and simple reinstall or try to reinstall the original kernel. If some of your partitions wont mount (private data), then remake to ext3 _after_ having backed it all up.
I have not looked at the wiki, but I'm sure there is some warning about kernel naming - at least I _know_ that subject has been discussed in this forum.

  • Help to report a kernel bug (2.6.32, 2.6.31 and 2.6.33rc8)

Hi. I have problems with latest kernels. After suspend (to ram), wired connection doesn't work (eth0 doesn't connect). It occurs with those kernels in ArchLinux 32 bits and with 2.6.31 in Ubuntu Karmik.
    The card is:
02:00.0 Ethernet controller: Marvell Technology Group Ltd. 88E8036 PCI-E Fast Ethernet Controller (rev 10)
    and the sys log is:
