Thinkpad 10 - Resetting

Hello everyone. I'm new to this forum but it seems like a fantastic place. I hope I can find some knowledgeable people to help me with my issue.
I work for a financial company in the IT department. 2 days ago, my manager hands me a thinkpad 10 and informs me that it was given to an exec to use, he had great results but now the Exec left the company. My goal with this device, would be to reset it back to factory settings and then give a VIP here at the company a walkthrough.
One key note about the device when I received it : it was locked for the former exec's personal account and I was not allowed to have the password. So I began to do research and found that you were able to hold the left SHIFT and hit restart to get some other options. I found the "Reset my PC" option and began to attempt that.
Unfortunately, I failed to find success there as it requested installation or recovery media. Odd considering I thought the device had a recovery drive, but no luck. From there I did some research and found that you could download Windows 8 onto a flash drive, plug it in and it would be able to reset from there back to factory settings. While it was a long shot, I found no success there either.
I wasn't sure what to do next, so I stupidly just reinstalled windows 8 straight from the USB drive as a fresh, empty install. Unfortunately this has gotten me a bevy of problems. No drivers, none of the drivers I find work and the machine acts very oddly. For example, I can't get the wireless or touch screen to work.
So that's where I'm at. I'm very desperate for some help and hope I can find it. I'm assuming the best course of action would be to get a disk that has the image for the thinkpad 10 on it, but I'm unsure how possible that is. If anyone has a course of action or suggestion, please help!
Thanks in advance.

You can try calling Lenovo tech support for a recovery media usb drive that will recreate the recovery partition and re-install windows 8.1 on the Thinkpad 10. I've done the exact same thing on my Thinkpad 8 before (clean install and deleted the recovery partition) and I was able to restore it to factory defaults through the recovery usb they sent.

  • X201 - Taskbar toolbars disappear on restart. HotKey Integration Package to blame?

[This is a duplicate post I erroneously posted in the X Tablet forum.]
have an X201 with 8GB RAM, Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit. The problem is that the taskbar toolbars (for example, Access Connections and Lenovo ThinkPad Toolbox) reset when I restart the computer. That is to say, after every restart, I have to right-click on the taskbar, click on Toolbars and click on the toolbars I want to appear in the task bar. The only toolbar that does not disappear is the Language Bar (I use two keyboards).
I have tried various registry "fixes" involving the DWORD "NOSaveSettings". It did not work. I tried requiring a log-in with password. That did not work. There is no malware on my system.
Starting with a new user profile DID fix the problem UNTIL I installed the most recent Lenovo HotKey Integration Package, and immediately thereafter, the toolbars began once again to disappear on every re-start. Unfortunately, uninstalling the HotKey Integration Package does not solve the problem. Unless someon has another fix for this annoy‌ing issue, the only solution I have found is to create a fresh user profile and then insure that I never install the HotKey Integration Package. (I'm not sure what I will miss if I fail to install that package.)
So, does anyone have a solution?

  • ThinkPad X201 - Hard Drive1 Password - no reset possible

    Hello outside,
this post is going to be longish but I need to give as much information as possible to get your help.
We bought a bunch of lenovo X201 notebooks plus additional FDE drives (Hitachi, model name is HTS723225L9SA61, delivered through lenovo) to replace the builtin non-FDE ones. After performing some tests on one of those FDE drives I need to erase the master password of the Hitachi FDE drive. The drive contains just some test data, so everything can be erased/overwritten. AFAIR, this password is set by a SATA command, so I expected it to be changed by any tool that is capable of applying SATA commands like hdparm. I looked for datasheets on Hitachi harddrives and found a lot of SATA commands that can be applied to the drives. I just do not know how. I tried with hdparm but the valid status is displayed as frozen, therefore the tutorial I found but which I cannot refind here on this forum cannot be concluded. It reads as i fit allowed to overwrite the Master password at the end. I read and followed several forum threads such as http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/W-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/Can-t-remove-HDD-password/m-p/241677 and http://forum.lenovo.com/t5/R-and-L-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/Hard-Disk-Password-functionality-bug/td-p... without success. I also tried with Hitachi Tools and external boot media such as Parted Magic/hdparm/smartmontools. With none of them I succeeded, so I am looking for your help.
    Expectations
Entering BIOS>Security>Password, setting Hard Disk1 Password to "User+Master" shall prompt the User for his password on powering up the notebook. In case he forgot his password, Master can login and let User set a new password. That way, no foreigner powering on the machine can gain access to the data. He can only erase all data on the drive by setting up a new Master password using special tools. This will only deliver him a bare drive but no business data.
    What happened?
    Case 1
I ran into the same problem as described in both scenarios of http://forum.lenovo.com/t5/R-and-L-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/Hard-Disk-Password-functionality-bug/td-p.... I placed the FDE drive into the notebook, entered the BIOS settings for Security>Password>Hard Disk1 Password and set Master+User password at the same time (there is an option to set them in parallel). The User password can still be changed but my initially (and just once) set Master password is not being accepted when I power on the notebook and hit F1 for the overlying Master password instead of the User password. Even right after setting Master+User passwords it was not possible to change the password inside the BIOS or to access the computer by entering the Master password. The password was rejected all the time. Only the User password allows me to gain access to the system. Any typing errors are excluded as I used a very simple password for the start (just capitals and a number) while I was watching every character to appear as a filled box on the screen and both passwords (first Master password plus confirmation password) were of the same length and for sure of the same characters (otherwise BIOS had to reject but not accept this as the initial password).
Hitachi offers some tools at http://hitachigst.com/support/downloads/ which did not help me either (I had to run them on an X61 due to not supported ICH9M). Feature Tool does not offer operations to push SATA commands to the drive. So I used Hitachi Drive Fitness Test to perform a full write operation to the disk. This took several hours and I did that because I was hoping to be able to set new User+Master passwords afterwards. This is not possible as I am still asked for the current Master password. So don't waste your time with that.
Booting off a Linux Live CD using smartmontools does not allow me to push commands to the drive either as the fitting status is set to "frozen".
This is all I found out that can be performed on the drive to regain access to set the Master password. All in all I find this whole procedure very frustrasting. Documentation is incomplete from my POV. The most simple way would be to have a tool for changing the drive's key, losing all the data on it but allowing to reuse the disk. I did not find a dedicated function to do so. At least by overwriting the drive I expected to be able to reset the Master password but I learnt that it just overwrites the data but not the harddrive key.
After having performed the erase operation to the drive the BIOS offered new information for Hard Drive1 Password:
    "Current setting: Enabled
    Status: In Process
In Process: To complete enrollment, click Start>All>ThinkVantage>Create Recovery Media, and follow instructions
Registered: If password is forgotten, press F12 at power-on password prompt to recover."
I did that (create the bootable media) and set up a USB thumbdrive which was not bootable although the write operation ended successfully. Then I did the same with a bunch of DVD+RW media and ended up on disc 3 in an "unexpected error (rc=9)" for the check at 22% after write to disc operation. In the end, this is just a product recovery disc which allows to reinstall Windows 7 but not to change the hardware password for the disk drive (for sure).
No Supervisor password is set. According to http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=migr-59377 setting one would overwrite the Master password: "Setting a Supervisor password automatically sets the master Hard drive password". The questions are: which one will be the new Master password? The one used as Supervisor password? Will it be possible to disable the Supervisor password afterwards or will it stay on forever same as Hard Disk1 Password settings do? According to http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/W-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/Can-t-remove-HDD-password/m-p/241677 even setting up a Supervisor password for the first time will ask me for the Master password in case those differ (which should be the general case).
I have no more ideas on what to do. Please give me some input.
    Case 2
With a second drive which is not an FDE drive I tried to be more clever. I just chose to set the User password. But doing so no more allows me to place a Master password afterwards. All I can do from now on is change the User password but there is no possibility inside the BIOS nor in any of the Hitachi tools that I found to set a Master password afterwards. The worst thing about that is the fact that this information has _nowhere_ been displayed before setting the password. There _must_ be a warning about this beforehand! This is a real big fault which renders the drive useless. If there is no possibility for the user to fix that I will have to return the drives to the manufacturer because of this fault. What I am mostly missing is documentation. The supplied "lenovo Notebook Computer Hard Disk Drive User's Guide" just contains information on how to physically replace the drive plus some guarantee notes. There is no documentation coming by explaining the process of setting up a User(+Master) password, nor are there _any_ warnings during interaction. Nowhere did I find information on the fact that this operation is irreversible. This is not acceptable.
Once a User password is set, it cannot be removed anymore nor can the option be changed to "User+Master". There is just an option to change the password but not to disable the setting again. As any option inside the BIOS can be changed, this is totally unexpected by any user.
Would flashing the drive's firmware help, definitely?

I read the document now. No possibility to overwrite or remove the harddrive password (case 1) even for accepting to lose all data on it. Also no possibility to remove the User password or set an additional Master password afterwards once you've set the User password (case 2). At least in case 2 this is a definiive product fault that is nowhere stated beforehand, so even as a computer pro you cannot guess that setting this BIOS option will be a one-way ticket. Because of this I will have to return the drive to the manufacturer. Poor documentation, but not on the customer's back. Be careful if you set your Harddrive password.

  • Need to reset password for digital ID to sign doc in Adobe Reader on thinkpad using Windows

    Hi,
I need to reset (or find) my password for the self-signed digital ID I created in order to sign a doc in Adobe Reader using Adobe Echosign software. I'm currently on my laptop (thinkpad) which uses Windows. How do I do this?
    Thanks

Unfortunately, only you can remember your password for a self-signed digital ID.  No one can reset or find it for you.

  • ThinkPad X220 UltraNav Settings Keep Resetting to Default on Reboot

    Hello,
I use a ThinkPad X220 and until the last week I barely had any problem with it.  The UltraNav driver settings did occasionally reset themselves in the past, but that was only when I updated the driver or used Windows Update.  Since last week, however, I found the settings reset every time I shut down my computer.
I checked the solutions on other threads (which normally pertained to other systems), but to no avail.  I even tried installing the Synaptics driver instead of the UltraNav driver, but I encountered the same problem: the settings kept resetting for the other driver the same way it did the Ultranav.
I updated all the drivers for the machine as of this morning, and still there is no difference.
Could anyone help me out here?  I am unable to use the TrackPoint unless it is set at its lightest touch, and it is quite inconvenient to have the settings reset every time I boot up the computer.

I assume you are using Audigy 2 something, it has a terrible tendency to forget setting (not just THX) to date there is no sure fire fix. It just appears to be poor software which seems to conflict with most everything. In the soundblster forum this is a common problem.

  • ThinkPad W530 on Windows 8 - dual monitoring flickers and resets resolution evey minute

I am not able to run presentations from my ThinkPad W530 while duplicating the monitor to a beamer. The monitor will flicker and reset its resolution every minute. I have already tried updating drivers, setting BIOS mode to discrete, using different resolutions, but nothing helped. As such, the device is useless when I would need it most importantly, to give presentations.
Thanks in advance for any help in resolving this really disturbing issue.

    Hi all
My thinkpad suddenly not starting. During bootup, I tried to scan and fix sectors but after 3-4 hours, it said it can not be done (after finding like 400 errors). May be the hard drive is partially corrupted. I tried to reset to factory setting from within startup screen it went till 42% and hung for two days. When I restarted it can not now complete even factory reset.
Is there a way I can get factory os installation and settings from online lenovo website? Any help is appreciated.
By the way my laptop is out of warranty.
    Thanks

Greetings out to the community, great work you do out there, thank you all!
I got have two problems to solve:
    1. I want to configure my   touchpad   to be a   pure (two-finger-)scrolling device   (no clicking, no mouse-movement should be made).
I want my trackpoint to control the mouse, and use the three buttons above the touchpad for interacting (Click, middle-click -> activates scrolling with trackpoint too, right click).
    USB-Mice should be used "normally".
    2. Is it possible to   reset all settings    from   synclient   and restore "standard"-settings in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-synaptics.conf, or reinitialize autoconfiguration of x?
    Thank you in advance.

    I try this procedure:
    Turn off the computer.
    Remove the battery pack.
    Remove the backup battery.
Turn on the computer and wait until the POST ends. After the POST ends, the password prompt does not appear. The POP has been removed.
Reinstall the backup battery and the battery pack.
    but power-on password still here
Moderator Note; s/n edited for member's own protection

    Exactly what doesn't work?
from a completely shut down state, not a re-start, press and hold the F1 key while starting the system.  The system should then beep and show the lock symbol with the error codes which mean that the date and time aren't correct, (as a result of the CMOS battery being pulled).
At the lock prompt enter your supervisor password, not the old or new power-on password, set the time and date to the correct values and remove or change the supervisor password as described in the manual.  If you do not know the supervisor password you will need to find it out from the previous owner if there was one; otherwise you will need a new mainboard.

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi DK,
If you are using the Rescue and Recovery to reload Windows, you should never see the "SysPrep 2.0" appear. Are you using the orignal recovery CDs to reload windows or booting from the F11 partition?  To fix this problem, I would simply start the process of reinstalling Windows again.
Go to this website and follow the guide for Using Rescue and Recovery to Recover your OS
    http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-70803
If you are still seeing the "System Preparation Tool 2.0" after reloading Windows, do the following:
Step 1: Under the "Options" box, make sure the following are checked:
"Don't reset grace period for activation"
    "Use Mini-Setup
    "Don't regenerate security identifiers"
Step 2: In the drop down menu for "Shutdown mode", change this setting to "Quit"
Step 3: Click the "Reseal" button
This should resolve your issue. Be sure to reload the OS using R&R FIRST before doing the above steps.

  • How do I perform a factory reset on my ThinkPad tablet?

    Question
My tablet has been reasonably unstable from day 1, even pre-installed apps like ebuddy force close, I have tried removing and reinstalling the app but it still force closes immediately. I also have a heap of other apps that force close on my tablet but run fine on colleagues tablets (4 of us bought them together)
How do I do a complete factory reset on this thing, I don't want just my data removed I want a fresh Android install.
    AnswerTo perform a factory reset:
    Power the unit off.
Then hold the power button until it gives you the short vibration
Right when it does, hit the VOLUME UP button a couple of times.  (This may take a couple of tries.)
This will bring up a menu that includes a full factory reset.
Use the volume buttons to move the menu selection and the power button as the "enter" key.

i tried to install an update and now i have nothing but a tablet with a running logo. i have read everything on this site and i am very confused about what to do.  i have tried several suggestions (wiing the cache, data and trying to reboot) but i get nowhere. i am not great with the computer stuff so past the relatively simple steps i get lost inthe tech language.  going to a site and downloading to a SD card would be easy if there was just one place and not so many different ones that have multiple options and steps.   Is there a simple explanation as to what i can do to get my TPT1 working again? i dont know why Lenovo doesnt have a something to download on their website since getting bricked seems to happen often.  I called tech support and got told they couldnt help me as it was out of warranty and a new board is $575!  All they offered was what is in the manual which doesnt cover this situation as factory restore doesnt work.  i really would like to get it working again.LAlady

  • Reseting CMOS, BIOS, Fingerprinting access for a Lenovo ThinkPad T60P 2007-8EU

    Greetings,
My machine has been so hacked that I have now disabled Blue Tooth, Infrared and Cingular SIM access to it by removing the hardware components. I also shut down the funcionality in the BIOS. Only Ethernet and WiFi are left. In order to do this I had to gut the machine and extract components like the SIM card, and a couple of chips.
After I put it back together, when I boot it I get messages that the security system has been tampered with. So, I tried to configure BIOS and in spite of removing the secondary battery, settings related to security persist. Are they stored in CMOS or elsewhere. Thinkgs like Paraphrase.
However, my fingerprints gone and I cannot restart the security chip features. So, my question, in case anyone is out there, is, how do I reset CMOS, reload BIOS to a decent version, and then re-enable the security system involving the security chip and figerprinting?
All of my problems began after I did a stupid suggested BIOS update.... Duh!
Anyway, I hope I can get some help from someone short of taking the machine in. I hate to say it, but I never get it back the way I want so I might as well do it myself. As a CS major, I think I can hack it.
    Thank you and regards,
    Jean-Pierre

    Greetings,
The motherboard is not useless. After I received the message indicating that the security chip had been tampered with, I still went forward, entered BIOS and reconfigured it to my specs. Then I booted the machine and everything came up fine. After being in CS for nearly three decades, I know some error messages don´t affect functionality.
However, like I said, I still want to completely clear CMOS memory, and install a good version of the BIOS as I can pinpoint the flash update suggested by the system, and which I stupidly accepted, as one source of problems. I would like to roll back to factory BIOS, or the latest stable version.
As far as the security chip, I have seen no mention of it in the Documentation, don´t know where it is located and I did not remove it. I did remove the BlueTooth Chip, the Cingular Wireless Chip and its corresponding SIM as well as the modem Chip.
    Regards,
    Jean-Pierre

  • Thinkpad a20m - Repeatedly resets when attempt to power up

I have an a20m, originally purchased around 2000, which I'm attempting to restore to working condition as part hobby, part educational experience. The laptop initially suffered cosmetic damage when I accidentally dropped it from approximately 1-2 feet above a lineolium floor while stored in a unpadded computer bag. The laptop continued to function, but had a crack on the rear faceplate by the right-side hinge for the lid/LCD screen. Eventually, the plastic broke away, causing the lid/LCD to swing completely forward, perpendicular to the keyboard. When I subsequently attempted to boot, the laptop kept "clicking" as it attempted to power-up, almost like a car engine struggling to start. The system status lights activate, flashing on and off in time with the aforementioned clicking pattern.

    Welcome to the forum!
The "clicking" sound might be related to a damaged hard drive. Remove it and try to access BIOS (press F1 on boot) without it.
    Good luck.
