Third-party boards with the real-time OS

I have some third-party PXI board and would like to work with it with the NI's real-time OS, provided with
the NI's RT computers (like PXI-8170).
- How do I tell to the OS that there is some board connected to it ? How do I map it I/O ports in the I/O address space of that embedded computer ?
- May I write directly to the I/O ports in this OS ? (E.g., in NT I cannot, I need a driver that runs in kernel mode.)

To program a third party board you can use VISA Register Level Programming. The first thing you'll need to do is to generate an .inf file - this file is used for NI-VISA to properly locate your PXI instrument. To create this file, use the PXI Driver Development Wizard that ships with NI-VISA. This drivers will collect basic information about your board - manufacturer ID, model ID, and interrupt handling (if applicable.) Once the .inf file is created, you can ftp it to the RT controller. You will then be able to use VISA register level code (peeks and pokes, etc) to program the board.

Dafna

    Don't continually post the same question over and over. If you have new information, add it to the original thread. Did you actually click the link under the word "duplicate"?
    Chopping up a discussion about the same thing into several threads (like here is this thread, but also here and here) serves no useful purpose. It will not increase the chance of a good answer, in fact most people will simply ignore it.
    Imagine if everybody else would post like you! Every discussion would be if three different places and we would have three times more threads.

    Have you contacted The MathWorks yet? They probably have the best information.
    However, I did a quick search and found some information on The MathWorks' site. For Data Acquisition Toolbox examples: http://www.mathworks.com/access/helpdesk/help/toolbox/daq/daq_example_index.shtml.
    For RTW information: http://www.mathworks.com/support/product/RT/.

    I have a VeriStand-Project (VSP) created with my Laptop-Host (LTH) which works with my PXI, while

    The software versions of the NI products (MAX/My System/Software) between my LTH and the iPC are
    almost the same. The only differences are:
    1. LabView Run-Time 2009 SP1 (64-bit); is installed on LTH but missing on iPC. The iPC has a 32-bit system.
    2. LabView Run-Time 2012 f3; is installed on LTH but missing on iPC.
    3. NI-DAQmx ADE Support 9.3.5; something strage on the LTH, because normally I am using NI-DAQmx 9.5.5 and all other DAQmx products on my LTH are 9.5.5. That means NI-DAQmx Device Driver 9.5.5 and NI-DAQmx Configuration 9.5.5.. On the iPC side all three products are 9.5.5.. That means NI-DAQmx ADE Support 9.5.5, NI-DAQmx Device Driver 9.5.5 and NI-DAQmx Configuration 9.5.5..
    4. Traditional NI-DAQ 7.4.4; The iPC has this SW installed. On the LTH this SW is missing.
    In order to fix this problem I have formatted my PXI and I have installed the following SW from the iPC:
    1. LabVIEW Real-Time 11.0.1
    2. NI-488.2 RT 3.0.0
    3. NI_CAN 2.7.3
    Unfortunately the above stated problem still arose.
    What can I do to fix this problem?
    I found a hint on http://www.labviewforum.de/Thread-XNET-CAN-die-ersten-Gehversuche.
    There it is written to deploy the dbc file againt.
    If this is a good hint, so how do I deploy a dbc file?
    I would feel very pleased if somebody could help me! :-)
    Best regards
    Lukas Nowak

    Hi Lukas,
    I think the problem is caused by differenet drivers for the CAN communication.
    NI provides two driver for CAN: NI-CAN and NI-XNET.
    NI-CAN is the outdated driver which is not longer used by new hardware. NI replaced the NI-CAN driver with NI-XNET some years ago, which supports CAN, LIN and the FLEXRAY communication protocol.
    You wrote:

    3. NI_CAN 2.7.3
    NI CAN is the outdated driver. I think that you should try to install NI-XNET instead of NI-CAN on your PXI-System, to get rid of the error message.

    What you say about Send Later timestamp is correct.
    When you click Send or Send Later a time is set regardless of when you actually sent the Send Later email.

  • BAdI........How are they used in the real time scenario.

    Im a rookie in ABAP development and i was wondering that how we use the BAdI enhancement technique in the real time scenarios. Like do we get create them or we have few already built BAdI's which we work on? Can any body please explain how this works.

    Hi Ramana,
    Business add-ins are enhancements to the standard version of the system.
    Business Add-In is a new SAP enhancement technique based on ABAP Objects.
    They can be inserted into the SAP system based on specific user requirements.
    Each Business Add-In has:
    • at least one Business Add-In definition
    • a Business Add-In interface
    • a Business Add-In class that implements the interface
    In order to enhance a program, a Business Add-In must first be defined
    Subsequently two classes are automatically generated:
    • An interface with ‘IF_EX_’ inserted between the first and second characters of the BADI name.
    • An adapter class with ‘CL_EX_’ inserted between the first and second characters of the BADI name.
    The Application developer creates an interface for this Add-In.
    There are multiple ways of searching for BADI.
    • Finding BADI Using CL_EXITHANDLER=>GET_INSTANCE
    • Finding BADI Using SQL Trace (TCODE-ST05).
    • Finding BADI Using Repository Information System (TCODE- SE84).
    1. Go to the Transaction, for which we want to find the BADI, take the example of Transaction VD02. Click on System->Status. Double click on the program name. Once inside the program search for ‘CL_EXITHANDLER=>GET_INSTANCE’.
    Make sure the radio button “In main program” is checked. A list of all the programs with call to the BADI’s will be listed.
    The export parameter ‘EXIT_NAME’ for the method GET_INSTANCE of class CL_EXITHANDLER will have the user exit assigned to it. The changing parameter ‘INSTANCE’ will have the interface assigned to it. Double click on the method to enter the source code.Definition of Instance would give you the Interface name.
    2. Start transaction ST05 (Performance Analysis).
    Set flag field "Buffer trace"
    Remark: We need to trace also the buffer calls, because BADI database tables are buffered. (Especially view V_EXT_IMP and V_EXT_ACT)
    Push the button "Activate Trace". Start transaction VA02 in a new GUI session. Go back to the Performance trace session.
    Push the button "Deactivate Trace".
    Push the button "Display Trace".
    The popup screen "Set Restrictions for Displaying Trace" appears.
    Now, filter the trace on Objects:
    • V_EXT_IMP
    • V_EXT_ACT
    Push button "Multiple selections" button behind field Objects
    Fill: V_EXT_IMP and V_EXT_ACT
    All the interface class names of view V_EXT_IMP start with IF_EX_. This is the standard SAP prefix for BADI class interfaces. The BADI name is after the IF_EX_.
    So the BADI name of IF_EX_CUSTOMER_ADD_DATA is CUSTOMER_ADD_DATA
    3. Go to “Maintain Transaction” (TCODE- SE93).
    Enter the Transaction VD02 for which you want to find BADI.
    Click on the Display push buttons.
    Get the Package Name. (Package VS in this case)
    Go to TCode: SE84->Enhancements->Business Add-inns->Definition
    Enter the Package Name and Execute.
    Here you get a list of all the Enhancement BADI’s for the given package MB.

  • How to programmatically set the real-time CVI startup DLL?

    Dear NI Support Engineer:
    I'm part of a team of software engineers working on a real-time aerospace app at Honeywell (Coon Rapids, MN campus).  We're using LabWindows/CVI 9.0 and three LabView 8.6 real-time modules.
    Up until now, we've been using the CVI debugger to launch our real-time apps or just copying the app DLL to C:\ni-rt\cvi on the real-time box and setting it as the default startup DLL.
    What we need to do now is create our own directory structure at the root of C: on the real-time box (which, by the way, is using the Reliant file system).
    In fact, we have created directory ug7500 at the root of C: on the realtime box, and two subdirectories (one for data and one for results) directly under directory ug7500.  We'd like to place all of our app DLLs in the ug7500 directory and have the ability to change the default startup DLL programmatically.
    We've been using your LabWindows/CVI Real-time File Copy Utility to set the startup DLL whenever we're not using the debugger.  That was just fine for the first stage of our development.
    At this stage, however, we need be able to set the startup DLL programmatically.  We have not been able to find out how to do this from reading the real-time module documentation.
    Can you either point us at some documentation on programmatically setting the default startup DLL, or e-mail us the instructions, or give us a phone call and explain what steps we must take.
    Thank you very much.

    Hello All,
    For the reference of anyone else trying to do this, you can modify the INI file to change the startup DLL. Using the INI instrument that ships with CVI (C:\Program Files\National Instruments\CVI90\toolslib\toolbox), you can find the StartupDLLs tag and replace the last value with your startup DLL, such as:
    #include "inifile.h"
    #include <cvirte.h>
    static int status;
    static IniText myINIFile;
    int main (int argc, char *argv[])
     if (InitCVIRTE (0, argv, 0) == 0)
      return -1;    /* out of memory */
     myINIFile = Ini_New (0);
     status = Ini_ReadFromFile (myINIFile, "c:\\ni-rt.ini");
     status = Ini_PutRawString (myINIFile, "LVRT", "StartupDLLs", "c:\\NI-RT\\system\\cvi_lvrt.dll;c:\\ni-rt\\system\\nidevldp.dll;nisysapirpc.dll;niorbp.dll;c:\\ni-rt\\system\\mxsemb.dll;c:\\ni-rt\\system\\nipxism.dll;c:\\NI-RT\\cvi\\myStartup.dll;");
     status = Ini_WriteToFile (myINIFile, "c:\\ni-rt.ini");
     return 0;
    Right now, there are some caveates with using CVI 9.0 to manipulate an INI file to be used on an RT target. The INI functions currently add line breaks automatically for large tag values and adds quotes around the values. For many INI files this is ok (such as TestStand INI files), but it will not work on an RT target. To remove these features, modify the following lines of the inifile.c file located in the same directory as the INI instrument:
    1. On line 38, change the default value of INI_NUM_CHARS_PER_LINE from 80 to a large number such as 8000.
    2. Comment out line 953 (newEntry->addMarkerQuotes = addMarkerQuotes;
    Now you should be able to programmatically change the INI file of your target machine and, therefore, change the startup DLLs.

  • How can I Know the real time of my 24p project?

    I made an animatc as part of planning a 7 min animated video on Premiere Pro using a 24p project, trunsting that my ruler is set to 24 fps and that the time displayed was the real time of the video (not the NDF time), since there was no indication on Premiere's create sequence window that the ruler was on NDF basis. (When you cerate a new sequence,on the new sequence settings window you set the timebase as 23,976, but the ruler is shown as 24FPS, no indication of drop or non drop frame.)
    Recently I Had to export a 29,97 version of my project, and it was in fact 14 frames bigger. So I concluded that my time ruler was also showing me a NDF time not the real time of the video.
    Is there a way of creating a 24p project, with a ruler that gives me the real "clock" time? Or any Formula to "convert" a NDF time to DF (real) time, so I know where, on an NDF ruler, do I have  to stop to have a 7 min video?
    Thanks in advance
    Mauricio

    I think the best you can do is use the System Information application (Utilities Folder), looking in the wireless section.

  • Is there a way to create dependency on the real-time jobs

    Hi,
    We have around 80 real-time services running and loading the changed data into the target.
    The process being used is
    IBM Informix > IBM CDC > JMS (xml messages) > DS real-time services > Oracle EDW.
    While using the above process,  when ever there is change in the fact table and the dimension table, both the real-time services are loading the data at the same time into the target. This is causing issues in looking up data with the timing issue.
    Is there a way where we can create a dependency and resolve the timing issue and make sure the lookup table is loaded and then the master table is loaded?
    Please let me know.
    Thanks,
    C

    Hello
    With the design you curently have, you will have potential sequencing issues.  There is no magic in Data Services to solve this.
    You might want to consider building more complex real-time jobs that accept more complex data structures and have logic to process the data in dependency order.

  • Receiving the error message while executing the Real Time DTP

    Hi,
    I am receiving the error message while executing the Real time DTP for Billing data.
    Error Message - Record filtered in advance as error records with the same key exist     RSM2     722
    When I check the logs below is the message I am able to see. Can someone suggest as how to proceed further.
    Diagnosis
    The existing DTP requires a serialized update because fields are updated
    non-commutatively during the processing run (for example, MOVE).
    Therefore all new data records that have the same semantic key as
    incorrect records that have not yet been corrected in earlier requests
    or earlier data packages of the same request, are filtered out after the
    extraction in a special step. In this way the system ensures that
    incorrect data records are not repeated for your changes, which may not
    contain errors themselves.
    System Response
    The data record is not updated but is written to an error stack.
    Procedure
    Procedure
    Correct all incorrect data records and update them using an error DTP.
    Procedure for System Administration
    I checked the error stack and corrected the entries and let me know as how to proceed further. I am unable to execute the Error DTP as its not allowing me to edit and has only display options.

    How come you can not use more than 126GB of a 1.5TB diskdrive with LabVIEW Real Time?
    This is only 8.3% of the available disk drive space!
    http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/E7E2F5657B6026358625750B007201A6?OpenDocument
    National Instrument's solution is either reformat you drive to less than 126GB or replace the drive with one less than that size.
    Please NI, tell me you are going to fix your LabVIEW Real Time soon, and that we won't have to wait for LabVIEW RT 9.2.1 in 2011 for this one to be fixed.
    http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/90/Hard_drive_capacity_over_time.svg
    Drives as large as 126GB or more have been around since about mid 2002.  That's about 7 Years now and LabVIEW Real Time STILL can't use drives larger that 126GB!  Please NI.  Do something.
    We deserve fixes to the old versions of LabVIEW RT.  How about updates to LabVIEW RT.  Such as 7.0.2, 7.1.2, 7.6.2, 8.0.2, 8.2.2, 8.6.2.
    We don't need new features or versions of LabVIEW RT such as 9.0 until we have some of bugs fixed in the existing versions.

    Yes, 126GB is some space.  I see that there are now 2TB drives available.  126GB would be 6.3% of a new 2TB drive.  Should we all be happy with being able to use 6.3% of the available drive space.  Moore's Law seams to be alive and well.  Drives larger than 126GB have been readily available for 5 or 6 Years.  This should not be a surprise to NI.  Why don't they do something about it.
    Thanks for the trivia on Bill Gates.  I must have missed that one since I don't try to keep up with Microsoft.  I believe that he is a wonderful person and he and his family are doing wonders for the world in their "retirement".   The world needs more like him.
    What I do remember is Steve Jobs telling us that we would never need more that 128MB and that we would never to need to do anymore software development because everything was already in the "ToolBox".

    Hi Everyone,
    I need to insert data from Oracle to SQL Server on the Real Time basis, we have to fetch data from oracle approx 20 tables, and each table has more than 30 Fields. I need to fetch data in every 15 mins.
    I have created a job using SQL SERVER Agent by writing insert queries for all the tables with conditions that no rows will be inserted which is already in SQL. note that this job is taking only 1 min to execute.
    But in this way our SQL Server getting hanged and it giving problems to other application running in the SQL SERVER.
    So i m requesting all of you that what is the best way to insert huge amount of data on the real time basis.
    Thanx in Advance.

    1) Create Linked server
    2) insert data using openquery  and set job in sql agent
    3) run job after 15 minutes

  • Why is the Real-Time Idea Exchange completely ignored?

    Just looked at the LabVIEW Real-Time Idea Exchange and noticed that only one idea is marked completed, and two more (both posted in 2009, nearly 5 years ago) are "In Development." Those ideas aren't even the top-kudoed ones. NI - why ask for ideas for improvements, and then not implement any of them? (Yes, I have a personal interest here - the second-most kudoed idea in the real-time area is one of mine.)

    First off let me say thanks to you and all of the Idea Exchange contributors. The whole purpose of the Idea Exchange is for you, the users of the NI Platform, to bring your considerable experience to the table as we continue adding features and functionality to the NI Platform. Your passion is one of the primary forces that causes the NI Platform to grow and change in varous ways so that the application challenges of scientists and engineers all over the world can be solved.
    There are many user suggestions across the whole Idea Exchange for us to weigh when considering how to allocate our development resources. We try to judiciously consider which ideas will have the biggest impact on the NI Platform users, and as a result we often have to say "no" or "wait" to some ideas so we can say "yes" to others. You're definitely correct that the statuses need to be updated and I'll be doing so in the near future. Though this may give the impression of being ignored, I want to assure you that the ideas are read and evaluated by the R&D and Product Marketing departments with careful thought and deliberate intent.
    We hope that events such as NIWeek bolster your confidence in the progress of the NI Platform as you see the new hardware and software features being introduced. Though you may not see an immeadiate reward for your dilligence in suggesting ideas, please continue submitting your ideas. The long term effect will be a powerful platform of products designed to meet the community's needs. Thank you for your continued support and engagement.
