Hi all
This is horrible, I had an imac G5 that would never burn DVDs so brought it in for service, they replaced the drive 2 weeks later. I bring it back home... still the same problem so I take it back to the center and they replace the motherboard. Bring it back home and guess what... same thing but worse... video distortion and boot problems. Finaly after maybe 2 months of waiting for parts and bringing it to the service center apple decided to exchange it fo a new core duo imac. Great. Now I have just discovered that this new imac has problem with firewire. It will not reconise 2 devices (camcorder and ext. HD) at the same time. So i call apple and go thru the habitual troubleshooting steps but the problem continues. Finaly the guy says that the last thing to do is a full re install. I do it and when it is all done I try the 2 firewire things and............................................NOTHING
Back to the service center tomorow morning.

Sorry to hear about all of your problems.
I once had an eMac that I bought from an Apple Authorized Reseller (worst mistke of my life to buy it from someone other than Apple themselves). It had so many problems that I became fed up with it and called AppleCare. They replaced my machine with the iMac that I have now. Very nic eof them indeed.
Sounds like you are going through the same dilemma. If you have the AppleCare Protection Plan, or if the machine is less than 1 year old, call AppleCare up and explain to them your frustration. Be polite but firm. I am sure that they would be happy to aid you with your problem.

    Hey I have a 15" MacBook Pro. I recently installed Snow Leopard and I despise it. Nothing is different. Everything is slower, not faster. Also, my brother's favorite game, ToonTown, no longer works. I want to go back to Leopard, but according to what I can tell, it's impossible without having backed up your Mac. I didn't want to buy some $200 Time Capsule, and I heard Time Machine was slow, so that's why I haven't backed up my Mac. Anyways, there has got to be a way to go back. Is there any way at all?     Boot the Leopard DVD. Choose Custom Install. Choose Archive & Install. After you are happy, delete the old system.
    If you do not have suffient free space, then get something like OmniDiskSweeper (free download), find some wasted space, and delete it (but only delete stuff you know what it is, not some files that you find in /library or /system)
    As for backup, you should, as hard drives do die at the most unexpected times. And Time Machine is not slow, especially after the first full copy is made, and you can use your own external USB disk, which you can easily pick up for approx $100 or less (try searching on DealMac.com).
    But if you do not like TimeMachine, there is always SuperDuper (hightly recommended) and Carbon Copy Cloner (also hightly recommended).

    they charge me £19 for this?! this is stupid! the site is too complicated, nothing seems to work! all i wanted to do was edit a quick file, but apparently thats too much like hard work. it says "join our monthly subscription of £1 something a month. to have the ability to convert files and edit texts" then it charges me the whole £19 straight away even tho it defiantly said "monthly subscription" and it wont even let me do it! i convert files to word but they dont show up and when i try to edit text nothing happens! i used the help guide but that was no help whatsoever! very very unhappy with this service, and i want my money back!

    If you are using IMAP, Google may still have the items in their trash folder. Also, if there is an 'All Mail' folder, look there too.
    If you are using POP, you might still have the messages in your mail trash if you didn't opt to empty trash on exit.

  • Can Anyone Beat This for Terrible Service

    Verizon should be ashamed of itself.  I started with them in Feb. 2011.  I bought a Droid x, which began to reboot.  They replaced it with a 'refurbished' model.  That rebooted.  They replaced with this yet *another* Droid X, which not only rebooted but the screen went black during a call and couldn't be accessed.  I had to do a battery pull.
    A nice supervisor upgraded me for free to a X2.  The first time I used the camcorder, it froze the phone.  New supervisor offered me a free Incredible 2, but I didn't want that.  He said he'd already ordered it for me but when it came, I was to retun it and let customer service know and they'd switch it with a new X2.    When the time came to return it, customer service said that the supervisor was on vacation, no one could contact him and he left no instructions to replace my X2 with a new one.  A *month* later, with *no one* able to get in touch with this supervisor, another supervisor tells me the only way to get a new X2 was to extend my contract 6 months and I'd get a gift card to pay for the new X2.  Time came to use the gift card and there was still $109 left the card didn't cover.  Took a lot of work to get that resolved.  
    Three weeks go by and the phone is perfect......until 2.3.4 is upgraded and guess what? Yep. The camcorder freezes.  Verizon is totally useless and wants me to go back to refurbished models (what did I extend my contract for???) and switches me over to Motorola - in the Philippines, who can't help me.  When I finally talk to someone at Motorola, they want me to send them my phone for 2 weeks with no loaner so they can reload the OS.
    And Verizon?  The rep I spoke to said that Verizon is very well aware that these phones are buggy and the repairs and returns are "making them look so bad that they have a policy change coming so that all returns are to be sent to Motorola instead of them."
    I want out of my Verizon contract. I bought my phone and service in good faith and I've not have one phone longer than a month because of all the problems with a phone they *know* and *admit* is buggy.  I'm filing complaints with the FCC, the FTC, Verizon, Motorola, the California Attorney General's office, and the BBB.  No company should sell devices they know are faulty and yet Verizon is.  The rep admitted it.  And from all the other people I see on this forum talking about how they've returned their phones numerous times, I am far from the only one.
    Shame on you, Verizon!  You should do the honest thing and let me out of my contract so I can sign with a company who doesn't sell faulty devices.

    Over 9 months and 20 openreach appointments and my broadband is still not fixed.   They have tried the "put up with it or we will just say your line is too long and we will stop all broadband service" about 3 times now, but when I point-out my next door neighbour is with TalkTalk, and their BB is fine, and also point out I've had much faster BB for years, they back down.
    My speed has gone from 2Mbps to 384Kbps, and every time the phone rings the broadband disconnects.
    I am an IT engineer that works from home and about 5 times a day I have to tell my customers that my BB has dropped out and then I explain that I've been waiting 9 months for BT to fix it.
    Also I used to set up my customers on BT Broadband but obviously I haven't been doing that for the last 9 months. 
    I'm sure that the fault is in the old aluminium cable that Openreach don't want to touch (in fact that is what the last engineer told me) .
    When you add up the cost of all these engineers calls, and the loss of business from the bad name you are getting, it would have been far cheaper to replace the cable.

    I have two admin accounts on my MacBook Pro running 10.5.7. I am logged into one of them. Activate the screensaver. To wake up from screensaver I've set it up to require the password. So the password prompt comes up. It's already got my account name filled in, and is waiting for my password.
    Now, I pretend I don't remember my password for the account that's already logged in. So I go into the already filled out field for account name, I type over it my other admin account name, then enter that second account's password in. I am expecting to be logged in as the second admin user, right?
    Wrong! The screen flips, and I see where admin account 1 left off!
    Surely this is not supposed to happen?

    If the behaviour of the screensaver password box bothers you, it is configurable via the "/private/etc/authorizations" file.
    However, you appear to have a misconception of what an "admin" is in "OS X", and what they can do. An administrator can certainly administer the system, but another aspect of their function is to administer other users. Creating accounts for new users, deleting them when they are no longer necessary, cleaning up their files, etc. They can also do things like turn on screen sharing to access the user's desktop view remotely, which can be useful in a "help desk" context, but also to eg. make sure students are doing their work instead of something else, i.e. to snoop.
    Make no mistake - an "admin" has full access to any logged in session, and any unencrypted file on the system so there is no security risk in allowing them to unlock the screen.
    It is important for Mac owners to recognize this, so that they only give admin rights to trusted individuals, don't leave their own "admin" sessions unattended, and for that matter, only log in to an "admin" account when necessary to perfor administrative tasks.

  • Extremely sluggish SMS typing?  is there a fix?  this is terrible.

    Almost everytime I get a SMS and hit "reply"...it loads up SMS and when I type the letters respond they VERY VERY slowly. I have to exit out of SMS program, and then restart it...what gives?
    Anyone had the same experience?? Will Apple just give me a new phone???

    Try holding the home button for about 5 to 8 seconds every time you close down an app. The screen will go blank and then your home screen will pop up. This will fully close the apps down. Even os apps should be closed this way until they come out with a firmware update. For some reason aps are not fully closing as Apple had said they would to reduce memory and cpu usage. That is what is causing your lag. Mine was horrible until I started doing this for all apps. Making sure you do a hard reset after every sync/back up helps a lot too. When you turn the phone on after the hard reset it will have a tiny bit of lag as the os loads into the memory, but should clear up soon after.

  • How can I send gifts without credit card? My Apple ID credit is 20 euro, but I can't choose my credit just visa, master card or Amex? This is terrible, because the credit was for gifts.

    When my wife and I upgraded to OSX Mavericks the person I was talking to on apple support said I could use My apple ID and password to up grade on my wife's computer also. Well after we got finished she had all my Info from my computer on hers. It took about 6 hours to install the whole upgrade. They said if you have any problems just to call back and we will help. Here it is on a Sunday and I call every 5 minutes and all I get is a busy signal. If they are not open on Sunday's then why don't the just say so.The number I keep calling is 1-888-263-3394.I don't understand anything about iCloud, maybe thats why all my Info is on hers to. Larry

    My wife uses my Apple ID and password to download and install all her software because that way we only pay for it once and get essentially a family license. Otherwise we would each have to purchase and pay for our own copy. However, that only applies when we are purchasing software from the App Store or the iTunes store. We each have our own individual iCloud accounts where we store our personal Contact, Calendar, and other data. You can change the Apple ID on your wife's computer by going to System Preferences > Accounts and choosing her account then clicking on Apple ID: Set.
    Now if you want to make things more intertwined you and your wife can share your contacts, calendars etc with one another with read only or read write priveleges.

    please read my comunications with msi online help, after constantly being directed to sites to get contact details where both sites give the same telephone number to ring, which only redirects you back to the website you got their number from! i feel like neo in the matrix!! where he runs from the train station and ends up where he started!!!

    msi k7n2 delta motherboard packed up
    ive had this motherboard for almost 9 months, and now it is displaying errors.
    error 1: on athlon xp3000 incorrectly reads as not installed
    properly or damaged processor.
    error 2: on a 2.5 athlon xp it reads correctly but incorrectly
    states memory is damaged or non working.
    i have followed the instructions in the manual to clear/reset the cmos but to no avail, i have also tried removing the lithium battery and leaving the cmos in the clear position for 24 hours before replacing the battery and replacing the cmos jumper but to no avail.
    i have tested both the procesors and the memory (2 x 512mhz matched pair of crucial pc3200) on my other system motherboard and these all are all fine.
    i cant reflash the bios as it isnt a removeable bios and it will not even boot enough to access bios or even to turn on my monitor let alone access the floppy drive.
    summary of problem: wont boot to bios
    incorrectly reports errors on processors
    incorrectly reports errors on memory
    cant reset the cmos setting
    cant reflash the bios
    the cpu fan doesnt power up
    its been ok for nigh on 9 months
    everything works fine on different motherboard
    i have read the manual cover to cover and no joy.
    please help as this is less than a year old and the shop where i purchased it from has been closed down for over 5 months and the owner is beleived to have emmigrated to taiwan.
    i still have the full original packing and the board is clean and non dusty.

    basicallig the system ran fine,
    then it stopped working
    the d-bracket shows different errors which are as follows:
    1) it says the 3000 processor is damaged or incorrectly fitted  ( its fine on other board )
    2) it says memory is damaged or incorrectly fitted ( also fine on other board )
    3) i have tried resetting the cmos settings ( tried jumping the jumper and disconnecting the battery for 24 hours)
    4)cant get to boot at all not even to turn on monitor so i cant flash the bios with floppy disk
    5) the cpu fan doesnt work on the 3000 but does on the 2500 processor:

    tried 2.5 athlon xp in motherboard and it registers as there on the d bracket but then says memory is damaged or incorrectly fitted
    tried jumping the cmos with no success
    tried removing the lithium battery for 24 hours with no success
    i have tried both 3000 xp processor and 2.5 xp processor and memory on another board and they are all fine. ???

  • Terrible Battery Life - New MacBook Pro

    OK, 4 weeks into my New MacBook Pro. MacBook Pro 15", 8GB Ram, 512GB SSD (Lion O/S as shipped). I know there are other threads but here's the full summary from my perspective.
    Prior machine was MacBook Pro 17", 4GB Ram and 256 GB Hard Drive (Upgraded to Lion O/S). This older machine and the battery is 30 months old. It's awesome but I really needed more RAM and better battery life. Stumped over over $4000 for it.
    I migrated virtually everything (Using Migration Assistant). Machine came up perfectly, works like a charm.
    Except, the new machine gets only about an hour more at best than the old machine. The old machine was getting about 2.5 hours to 3 hours. I could get some work done on a plane and watch a 2 hour movie.
    However, the new machine will only get me about 3 1/2 hours. I only get 2 1/2 hours if I watch a movie.
    This is terrible. I have taken to Genius store and they agree the battery is fine and something is wrong but didn't have a fix. They and I since have tried all sorts of things at boot time to clean up errors, disk stuff, aplplied updates and all that. Basically, everything suggested in every forum. Some of these things actually have an effect on the "Time available" on the status bar, showing 7-8 hours for a while leading me into a false sense of security that a "fix" has worked. However, then after an hour or so of of use or booting from sleep, it's really averaging just 3 1/2 hours in real life, and sometimes just 3 hours.
    I had a spare bettery for my old MacBook so could get 6-7 hours on a long haul flight. Now, I am dead at 3 hours in.
    SInce Genius bar have confirmed machine is fine, and others have reported similar findings when going to Lion *AND* I have exactly the same apps on both machines... what the heck can it be?
    Does anyone want to guess? Does someone from Apple want to "see" my machine in use?
    HELP HELP HELP. PLEASE. This $4k machine is leaving me with a very sour taste.

  • Running out of internal storage space! Want to make room by deleting photos WITHOUT LOSING MY PHOTOS! Can I delete the Camera Roll yet still keep my photos in Photo Stream?? Will doing this free up ios storage? Does Photo Stream auto delete ever?

    Hello, I am out of internal storage on my Iphone 4 ALREADY (Just purchased 3 months ago!). I need to clear up some space so I can do updates and take new photos. I was thinking about backing up my Photo Stream to the icloud and then deleting my Camera Roll.
    1.) Is this a terrible idea??? I do NOT want to lose those photos! But I NEED more space on my phone!
    2.) Will deleting Camera Roll free up space (a sufficient amount? My Camera Roll is at 4.5 GB)?
    3.) Will deleting Camera Roll delete my photos from Photo Stream also? It doesn't seem to.
    4.)  Does Photo Stream ever automatically delete photos???
    5.)  Is there anyway I can save the pictures from my phone to my computer??? I can see the photos on my computer when viewing them through Photo Stream, but those are not permanent, correct?
    This is one of the most ridiculous, confusing and unnessacary things I've ever known! Why oh why can't we just have a good ol' SD Card??? (My Droid never ever ran out of storage and I had it for 2 years...)
    I tried backing up my photos in Itunes, but I don't have a new enough version. I tried downloading a new itunes and it still tells me I don't have the new version.
    I have been working on this for 4 hours, its 2:30 am and I am going to bed. I am sorry I had to ask, but I've been searching and searching and just cannot find the answers. Thank you so much for your help!
    6.) Also, I haven't been able to find the videos using the Icloud or the Photo Stream either...

    8.) Where on the icloud would one find text messages or other saved info??

    What I would say is best is to import the videos and photos to your computer so that you can delete camera roll photos with a copy of them in your possession:

    However, you can do the tedious task of moving your camera roll pictures to photo stream by ensuring photo stream is turned on for your device and take a screen shot of each picture in your camera roll to move it over.
    To take a screen shot, just press the "Home Button" and the "Sleep/Wake Button" at the same time while viewing the image.
    1.)  It's not a terrible idea, it can be tedious though.
    2.)  Deleting a bunch of photos/videos from a camera roll 4.5GB in size can definitely free up space
    3.)  Photo Stream photos, as you said, appear to stay upon deleting the photos.  (Tested it personally)
    4.)  Photo Stream has a limit according to:  (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4858)
              Essentially, it won't erase your photos until you tell it to.
    5.)  http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4083  (As shown above)
    6.)  To update iTunes, you must download and then "Run" the download you get off the website.  Otherwise you will just have an installer program sitting there not updating iTunes.
    7.)  You can bring up your Photo Stream pictures anywhere you have Photo Stream capabilities.  For a computer at someone else's house, they would have to have the iCloud control panel (http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1455) on their computer and be signed into their Photo Stream and viewing your profile's pictures (http://support.apple.com/kb/ts4379)
    8.)  On iCloud, you can backup your text messages, but you cannot view them independently on www.icloud.com.

  • Did you know this?

    I ordered my first book from Aperture. I was surprised to find out that the front cover of the book is not actually a "cut-out", but a photo PASTED on. This looks terrible. I would imagine that the corners of this cover photo will eventually curl up, causing the photo to come off the cover. The soft cover book that I had ordered from iPhoto (in the past) had a "cut-out on the cover, showing the photo underneath. I assumed that the Aperture book would do the same.
    Is this type of "pasted-on" photo cover explained somewhere in the ordering information that I missed???
    I can't give this to my customer.

    You are absolutely right, it is good business practice to check out the offerings from a company before you show or give it to your customers.
    I guess I just assumed that there would be a cut-out on the front cover of the Aperture books, since the soft cover books I ordered from iPhoto did have the front cover cut-out.
    My question, however, is where in the description of the Aperture hard cover book does it state that the cover photo is pasted on ? It is difficult to tell how the front cover is constructed from the photos on the Aperture web site.
    ...... I may have missed it.

  • IWeb 1.1  Still is TERRIBLE

    Wonderful. I download iWeb 1.1 with all of the shiny new features, such as background publishing, faster pages, more reliable uploading, comments in blogs and podcasts.
    All well and good. Except for the reliable publishing part. Apple, quite frankly, you s*ck. The same problem of iWeb having problems correctly calculating the disk quota for publishing to iWeb is STILL there. I haven't been able to publish my website all morning.
    Unreliable, unusable, and can't recomend this. Avoid iWeb people it is terrible.

    Everytime I complain about Apple's glaring lack of quality assurance and testing on a new product or release, I get all kinds of flack. Things like "It works for me, if you can't say anything constructive don't say it, what do you expect for something so cheap."
    I expect something that JUST WORKS. Isn't this supposed to be the Macintosh way, and the very thing that Apple touts as being a benefit of their system over other OS or platform choices? Isn't this why we pay a premium for their all-in-one solutions, hardware and OS, rather than buying a tinker-toy Dell and cobbling together some sort of workflow?
    When the Apple stuff works, I will be the first to talk up how great it is. Believe me, there is nothing better, integration-wise than the iLife package. Being able to uniformly access and manipulate media, be it music, photos, video, written word, and easily share it in the form of web pages, DVD's, photo books, greeting cards, what have you, is wonderful. It is a joy to use, and really frees my creativity.
    I remember years ago when software came out, a developer would not DREAM of releasing the thing with any show-stopping bugs. The market was smaller, it was simpler times, and the consumers would not have tolerated it. NOW everyone gives companies such as Microsoft, and yes, even our beloved Apple a free pass when their xx.0 versions are simply riddled with problems that render the software either useless, or a nightmare to use. The ONLY reason software companies get away with this crap is because the consumers enable this behavior, shrugging off poor quality software with a "nice effort guys, hopefully you will fix its problems in the xx.1 release." The fact of the matter is that we early adoptors are being taken advantage of by software developers to essentially bankroll their testing efforts to shake out the final bugs, bugs which SHOULD have been eliminated prior to the software's release, by rigorous quality assurance and testing practices. Software SHOULD NOT be judged on good intentions. It should be judged on how well it does its job.
    Apple has been well-aware of the publishing problems with iWeb since day one. The thing has been flakey for some users when attempting to do the "insanely great" functionality so proudly touted at MacWorld last year. I was unable to publish anything for a full ten days after purchasing the product, and I was livid.
    Periodically I run into a publishing issue with the thing where it will not upload to my iDisk. I will get strange disk quota errors, or even more cryptic problems.
    I work as a software developer. You can be SURE that one of the things I would have attempted to address in the point release, and one of the things that I would have placed VERY HIGH on my testing plan, would be the behavior of the software publishing functionality. If this is not 99% reliable, I would darn sight hold the product back until I was sure it worked. Apple has been told about this issue over and over again. I personally have talked to technical support AND customer relations about this issue. Is it a server thing? If that is the case, as a developer, I would be darned sure to test the software under a load, and simulate lack of server responsiveness and produce MEANINGFUL error messages to the end-user to indicate server problems.
    And yes, it comes down to how this thing impacts my work. I do freelance video work, and use .mac to publish previews of my edited videos for client approval. In general, this works well, albeit terribly slow due to the quirks of .mac. Twice now in the past month I have had to call my client and apologize that I could not get my edits posted for their perusal BECAUSE iWeb crapped out on me. I ended up having to grit my teeth, and either FedEx a DVD, or use the old homepage tools to get the work posted. This is not the so-called "Macintosh Way."
    I happily downloaded the new update to iWeb, with all of the great new features added to blogging, and supposedly speed-optimized graphic handling. And proceed to render my publishing efforts useless, with the same error that I had reported multiple times, that had been discussed in these forums multiple times, and still, glaringly obvious, present in the software.
    This is terribly frustrating.
