Thread hangs in windows XP with JRE 1.5

My java application hangs in a windows xp machine with jre 1.5. But it works fine in windows 2000 and in some other windows xp machine.
I am doing UI updates(like custom listmodels) inside the user spawn thread. I read from forums that we need to use SwingUtilities.invokeLater() in such cases. But how it then works in some windows xp machines and windows 2000 ? Am I missing anything.
Here is the thread dump :

  • Windows Crashes with JRE 1.4.2  When Moving around JDialog

    Hi!
    I work on a Java Applet/application that was originally written to run on java 1.1 -- only AWT that too. Recently I managed to convince my manager (and his manager and his manager) to migrate from the AWT framework on java 1.1 (Microsoft JVM that is ) to Swing/JFC on Sun Java 1.4.2 ... it took a lot of explaining, demostrating, begging, pleading etc., to get this project funded.
    Now, my app is all developed in JFC and ready for deployment and during testing found a potential show stopper -- When a Dialog Box or any moveable componant (internal windows etc) is moved around (holding down the mouse on the title bar of a dialog and dragging it around), the OS simply froze up ... nothing could be done other than power cycling the PC. Does anyone know if its a bug in JRE 1.4.2 and if it has been fixed?? This could potentially result in rolling back to AWT :(( .... and of course me looking like a fool in front of my manager!!
    ..... Please provide any suggestion other than moving to JRE 1.5.x beta. I've also noticed this happening in other Java Applications (Netbeans for example). So, I think this is a major bug the JRE 1.4.2.
    A million thanks and few Duke Dollars for anyone pointing me in the right direction.
    Note:
    1. This problem is not just with my app ... some other java apps that are installed on my workstation (like netbeans) behave the same when Moving Around dialog boxes.
    2. The behaviour is very random. But it has happened multiple times (and the very first time my manager run our app on jre 1.4.2)
    I would give a million dollars if I had them. But for now, please do with the million thanks and few duke dollars.

    Have you tried this on another machine?Yes ... actually this has happened on a few workstations here ... all of them are Pentium IV based dell workstations running Windows 2000.
    What exact version of 1.4.2 did you download?Java(TM) Plug-in: Version 1.4.2_04
    Using JRE version 1.4.2_04 Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM
    Have you searched the bug database? This one could be related to yours:
    http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=4673572
    This sounds similar but the difference is its not just the app that feezes up (so that you could do an alt+ctrl+del and kill it)..... the OS freezes up and you can move the mouse around still the system even queu e is not full and eventuall all I hear is the beeping. At this point I've to power cycle.
    Is there any way you could post the code or is it too big? Or, have you tried just creating a very small >application or applet that just shows one dialog, and if so, does that show the same problem? (What I'm >trying to get at here is - is it something in your code that is causing this, or something in the JRE, or >perhaps something to do with your machine's configuration/OS?)Unfortunately I cannot post the code ... its company rules and regulations. I've tried creating a very small app and it appears to work ok .... but randomly causes this freeze up. There is no definate pattern (except that it happens when you move around a JDialog or a JInternalFrame) . It could freeze up some time and work perfectly fine at other times. It has actually happened on other applications too (Netbeans, JEdit etc). That's why I suspect this might be a obscure bug in the JRE.
    I'll try to find a pattern so that it can be re-produced by everyone.
    Thanks for the help.

    I seriously doubt that it's a jvm flaw (possible, but very unlikely). Start stripping out code until you get down to a minimum size that still exhibits the problem. If then you can't clear it, post the minimal code and some information as to what's happening - you may want to try an analyzer.
    If the problem appears to be a GUI issue, post into the Swing forum, otherwise post into the Java Programming forum - more people read those.

  • Applets Crashing Internet Explorer on Windows XP with JRE 1.4.0 Final

    I have recently installed the 1.4.0Final JRE, and have found that upon arriving at a page with an applet on internet explorer explorer crashes. Where as under the JRE 1.3.1_02 it does not.
    I am running Windows XP, and cannot remember the exact error message I get, however it is something about an error occuring within iexplorer.exe
    Any help appreciated.

    I have the same symptom on Windows 2000 (SP2) using Internet Explorer 5.00. Replacing the IE JVM with J2SE 1.4 causes IE to crash when I visit java.sun.com.
    I am filing a bug with the JDC Bug Parade, but I am surprised that this has not been more widely reported, since I think I have a common system configuration.

    When i run my applet on IE 6 with JRE 1.4.2_06 and try to close IE window it freezes the IE window, while if i run the same code in 1.4.1_05 it works fine.
    The OS is windows 2000 Professional and IE is 6.0.2800.1106.
    Also the same applet works fine on Windows XP with IE 6.0.2900.2180 SP2 with JRE 1.4.2_06
    Please help....

    I was having similar problem earlier. Check if you are closing all the open resources (threads etc etc)

  • Mozilla 1.7.x  hangs in applet code on RH Linux with JRE 1.5.0

    Hi all,
    From my applet code when an URLConnection.getInputStream() method is called the browser hangs, if authentication is turned on the webserver.
    This works with jre 1.4.2 on linux, for the matter on windows with Jre1.5 also.
    Also it works on 1.5 if suthentication is not set.
    So it is this particular combination of (jre1.5/mozilla on linux/authentication) that doesnot work :):).
    I tried to set the auth header, but nothing seem to help.
    String login = "userid"+":"+"password";
    String encodedLogin = new sun.misc.BASE64Encoder().encode(login.getBytes());
    httpsCon.setRequestProperty("Authorization", "Basic " + encodedLogin);
    Searched on the sun/mozilla sites to see if any known issues, couldn't find any.
    Thanks
    RT

    Just to add upon that a simple code like this will hang
    String str = "https://ppp.qqq.com/admin/50_splash.gif";
    try {
    URL url = new URL(str);
    URLConnection con = url.openConnection();
    HttpsURLConnection conn = (HttpsURLConnection) url.openConnection();
    con.setDoInput(true);
    try {
    con.connect(); //-->hangs here
    It looks to me like at this point plugin tries to popup the authentication dialog box but it cannot.
    Thanks

  • WebRequest.Create Hangs in Client system with Windows 8.1 with Fmrk 4.5

    Hi,
    We are hosting a Windows Form in IE builded with .Net Target Framework 3.5 and running in ASP.Net website's run time .Net Framework 2.0.
    Till now, this is working in Windows 7 and IE11 combination. When we planned to migrate to Windows 8 and IE11 combination, some functionalities in the Windows form hosted in IE fails, its keep on hanging.
    When we debugged the code, we found that hanging happens at
    1. To insert a image
    WebRequest request = WebRequest.Create(url);
    2. While doing webservice call
    CSpellCheckerWS objCUserDictionaryWordsWS = new CSpellCheckerWS();
    Please find below our Trails for workaround:
    1. We have try catch block on top of above lines, but it never comes to catch or proceed (checked for more than 30 minutes), its keep on running that makes IE to hang. End user have to kill the IE to proceed with our web application.
    2. We have timeout option for WebRequest object, but we are having problem in the constructor itself, so unable to make use of timeout option.
    3. We planned to use HttpClient object, but for this we need to build our Windows Form with Target Framework .Net 4.5. But .Net framework 4.5 will no longer support to host the Windows Form in IE.
    4. We observed that, for our Windows Form project dll, say abcd.dll, we have ref link to abcd.config.xml
    in the ASP.Net hosted web page. If we remove the *.config.xml, then we do not have this hanging issue. So, our problem solves here. But we faced another problem. Now we are getting
    404 errors for all the dependent child dll for our main dll, abcd.dll. Even though we have child dlls in the same folder of abcd.dll, it is checking in website root folder, bin folder , .exe, .dll and finally after 8 iterations, it is picking
    the correct dll. So for multiple child dlls we are getting 9 * no. of child dlls = 404 errors. So, we are unable to proceed further.
    200 http://localhost/BrowserWebSite.CSharp/Default.aspx
    200 http://localhost/BrowserWebSite.CSharp/BrowserBin/BrowserApplication.dll
    200 http://localhost/BrowserWebSite.CSharp/BrowserApplication.config.xml

    404 http://localhost/BrowserWebSite.CSharp/BrowserChildApplication.DLL
    404 http://localhost/BrowserWebSite.CSharp/BrowserChildApplication/BrowserChildApplication.DLL
    404 http://localhost/BrowserWebSite.CSharp/bin/BrowserChildApplication.DLL
    404 http://localhost/BrowserWebSite.CSharp/bin/BrowserChildApplication/BrowserChildApplication.DLL
    404 http://localhost/BrowserWebSite.CSharp/BrowserChildApplication.EXE
    404 http://localhost/BrowserWebSite.CSharp/BrowserChildApplication/BrowserChildApplication.EXE
    404 http://localhost/BrowserWebSite.CSharp/bin/BrowserChildApplication.EXE
    404 http://localhost/BrowserWebSite.CSharp/bin/BrowserChildApplication/BrowserChildApplication.EXE
    200 http://localhost/BrowserWebSite.CSharp/BrowserBin/BrowserChildApplication.DLL
    So, please guide us how to proceed further. What is the relation between the *.config.xml and WebRequest.Create constructor and 404 errors.
    We have simple test application to replicate the issue. If needed, I can share the application.
    System Requirements to replicate : Windows 8.1, IE 11 and (Client system having .Net 4.5) and Windows / Web projects builded with .Net 3.5/2.0 respectively.
    Note : We have run caspol settings and set EnableIEHosting to 1 (DWord).

    Hello,
    >>When we planned to migrate to Windows 8 and IE11 combination, some functionalities in the Windows form hosted in IE fails, its keep on hanging.
    What .NET Framework version are you using after you migrate your client to windows 8 and IE11? If it is 4.0 or 4.5, I am afraid this is by designed because hosting controls in IE is now blocked by default (as of v4 or v4.5). See MSDN article under
    'Web Applications'.
    You could still enable it by modifying its provided registry key.
    By the way, since this issue is related with IE and web application, I suggest that you could post such kind of issues to related forum, as
    IE forum and Web forum.
    Regards.

  • Event Dispatch Thread Hangs, what is wrong?

    The Event Dispatch Thread Hangs when showing a modal dialog while running a
    SwingWorker Thread.
    I have included my code at the bottom of the page. There are three classes. I have posted a bug report to red hat. But I want to make sure my code is correct.
    My test case just puts the SwingWorker to sleep
    but the problem occurs if I do something real, like connect to a database, etc.
    Also I have tried little different variations of the logic calling
    setVisible(true)/(false) in different places and the same problem occurs.
    It seems to work with Sun JDK, note I am using IcedTea with Fedora Core 8.
    Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
    [szakrews@tuxtel ~]$ java -version
    java version "1.7.0"
    IcedTea Runtime Environment (build 1.7.0-b21)
    IcedTea Client VM (build 1.7.0-b21, mixed mode)How reproducible:
    Every couple times.
    javac TestClass2
    java TestClass2eventually it will hang. If it doesn't try again.
    You don't have to wait for the program to finish either.
    The program runs the Dialog 10 times but it never works or fails in the middle, it will either work or fail from the first dialog displayed.
    I have included a thread dump. That is about the most informative information I can get. Neither tracing nor writing a custom ThreadQueue or Drawing Manager to trace events produces any helpful information.
    Actual results:
    The JProccessBar won't move, and the SwingWorker finishes but the done() method is never run. The PROGRAM is not hung however because if I close the dialog then it will continue.
    Expected results:
    The JProccessBar should always move and the SwingWorker should always run the done() method.
    Additional info:
    java thread dump after freeze, taken with kill -s SIGQUIT <pid>

    There's nothing directly wrong with it, but it will
    prevent other threads acquiring the class lock - but
    that may be what you want.True. Although the typical case for code that looks like this would be to use wait--usually the various threads in question require the same lock, so you have to use wait in order for the waiting thread to give it up and allow the other thread to do its work. Hard to say for sure though what he's doing.
    Also, if loading is all that the other thread does, and you're waiting for that thread to die, use join. But then, if that's the case, and you're only waiting for a single other thread, then you might as well just put it all in one thread, as already indicated.

  • JVM Crash: with jre 1.6.0_18 but not with 1.5.0_14

    Hello everyone,
    I got the problem that my JVM crashes when I am using the jre 1.6.0_18 but the same code runs with an jre 1.5.0_14. The code contains some JNI parts and
    is compiled with a JDK 1.5.0_14. The crash can not be reporduced within a debugger. The crash either occurs in the jvm.dll - as in the error log below - or when acessing the ntdll.dll.
    Any help is appreciated!
    Thanks in Advance!
    Here is the JVM crash report:

    I have the Java console open and after 10 seconds it closes and the applet becomes unresponsive. Usually when an applet crashes, some error messages show up in the console before it closes. That does not appear to happen in this case.
    If I load a webpage with an applet (http://java.sun.com/applets/jdk/1.4/demo/applets/Fractal/example1.html) and then move to a non-applet webpage, and have the Java console up, it stays up (alive) for about a minute before it closes. In the case of my applet it closes much faster.
    When I refresh, the second instance of the applet might be starting in the same process as the first process which is in the middle of closing (I am new to Java and JNI, so I might be using the wrong terminology). But with JRE 1.6.0.25 I was not seeing the crash on refresh. It manifested itself with the update to JRE 1.6.0.31
    I did realize the codebase was wrong. This is what I have now:

    You cannot disable UEFI if your Windows 7 was installed with UEFI.  The System Reserved partition is different for UEFI than for legacy BIOS and your Windows 7 system will not boot in the legacy BIOS mode.
    Booting from DVD should not give you the Windows logo because it should boot into the DVD setup mode.

  • GetUserEvent hangs on Windows 7

    Hi,
    All of our applications are written in C++ using Visual Studio with LabWindows providing the UIR and API calls to interact with the GUIs. The apps are multithreaded with each GUI being on a separate thread for increased fidelity. We use GetUserEvent() with the appropriate panel id to retrieve events for each panel within its thread and then process the events returned, again, in the same thread.
    This has worked very well for us until we tried to run our applications on Windows 7. The first thread (and hence the first panel) works just fine. However when a second panel is displayed the application hangs. I've traced this to the second GetUserEvent() call, in the second thread, not returning and so the first one hangs as well.
    We are using Visual Studio 2010 and LabWindows 2009. The applications can be built on either an XP or Windows 7 box but will run ONLY on XP. No matter how they're built they always hang on Windows 7. I've also gone backwards to Visual Studio 2005 and LabWindows 8.5 with the same result.
    Has anyone seen this issue on Windows 7? I'm assuming that it's a Windows 7 issue since XP is fine and it also hangs in XP mode on Windows 7.
    Thanks,
    Matt

    Hi Matt,
    Could you create a small version of the code that recreates the issue and post it? This way we can try to reproduce the issue and see what could be causing the problem.
    Thank you!

  • Troubles with JRE 1.4.2 and iReport (with db2 connection)

    Hello everyone. My company is developing a product, and the client is working with JRE 1.4.2 . They (the client) are using db2 Database. We are using iReport to generate the product reports, but we encounter a problem with it - the report will compile and report (in any format) only once - afterwards, iReport will suddenly freeze and will stop to respond.
    Trying the same thing with JRE 5.0 worked perfectly, with not troubles at all (but we cannot ask our client to upgrade to JRE 5.0, of course)
    Anyone has any idea about how to fix this problem? perhaps there's a patch or something of the sort?
    I forgot to mention, there's no error message at all, and if any, it's a javaw.exe application hang.
    Any idea's?
    Thanks,
    Matt.

  • Windows cannot find \jre\NT\1.5.0\bin\java

    Hello,
    I searched google and found many documents and also tried 1-2 option posted on web but didn't succeed so last solution posting here.
    Trying unsupported installation R12(12.1.1) on Windows 7-Professional 64-Bit.
    System check succeeded without any trouble but with 33% installation, it gives above error(*windows cannot find \jre\NT\1.5.0\bin\java* ) and installation comes out.
    The StartCD came with jre\NT\1.6.0\bin\java directory so i tried to rename the folder with 1.5.0 ( reference and also changed in Rapidwizard.cmd .
    but now it doesn't throw any error but after 33% complete, it just exists without too much of information.
    The log too had only this info after system check messages
    RW-50010: Error: - script has returned an error:   2
    I got following DVDs
    oraAppsDB1
    oraAppsDB2
    oraApps1
    oraApps2
    OraAS
    OraDB
    startCD
    and then i tried to create stage area from startCD but it failed as it was asking for a DVD which i didn't have because i tried every DVD i have.
    So i manually created directories in stage area(StageR12).
    Appreciate your response.
    Regards!

    Kindly guide.
    Thanks & Regards
    Sunil

    Hi Sunil,
    Did you ever find a fix for this problem?
    I'm having exactly the same issue.
    I have an oracle form with a java bean that runs against J Initiator 1.3.1.28, and it works fine, with J Initiator. The java code was compiled against JDK 1.3.
    My form now uses the Sun JRE 1.6, update 16. I've recompiled the java code against JDK 1.6.
    And now when the java code sends an event to the form and I show an alert I get the same error you were getting:
    Exception in thread "AWT-EventQueue-2" java.lang.SecurityException: this KeyboardFocusManager is not installed in the current thread's context.
    I recompiled the java code against JDK 1.3, and ran it through the Sun JVM 1.6, and I still get the error.
    Any idea how to fix this?
    Regards,
    Chris.

  • New problem with JRE!!!

    I already installed j2re1.4 on SuSE Linux with some help from some of you (thanks, fellows!). Now I downloaded a freeware program that is programmed with java. It worked on Windows2k without any problems, but now I have Linux. This freeware program only consists of an executable .jar-file. Normally if you have installed JRE the programm starts when you open the .jar-file (like it was on Windows), but here it comes a window "open with...".
    How can I start this program?
    (HINT: The program is Arachnophlia 5.0 as seen on www.arachnoid.com/arachnophilia)

    What do you mean with "coolprogram.jar"? The terminal doesn't accept "-jar".
    There stands:
    -jar: illegal argument
    Usage: java [-options] class
    where options include:
    -help print out this message
    -version print out the build version
    -v -verbose turn on verbose mode
    -debug enable remote JAVA debugging
    -noasyncgc don't allow asynchronous garbage collection
    -verbosegc print a message when garbage collection occurs
    -noclassgc disable class garbage collection
    -cs -checksource check if source is newer when loading classes
    -ss<number> set the maximum native stack size for any thread
    -oss<number> set the maximum Java stack size for any thread
    -ms<number> set the initial Java heap size
    -mx<number> set the maximum Java heap size
    -D<name>=<value> set a system property
    -classpath <directories separated by colons>
    list directories in which to look for classes
    -prof[:<file>] output profiling data to ./java.prof or ./<file>
    -verify verify all classes when read in
    -verifyremote verify classes read in over the network [default]
    -noverify do not verify any class
    Now I don't know what to do.
