GetUserEvent hangs on Windows 7

Hi,
All of our applications are written in C++ using Visual Studio with LabWindows providing the UIR and API calls to interact with the GUIs. The apps are multithreaded with each GUI being on a separate thread for increased fidelity. We use GetUserEvent() with the appropriate panel id to retrieve events for each panel within its thread and then process the events returned, again, in the same thread.
This has worked very well for us until we tried to run our applications on Windows 7. The first thread (and hence the first panel) works just fine. However when a second panel is displayed the application hangs. I've traced this to the second GetUserEvent() call, in the second thread, not returning and so the first one hangs as well.
We are using Visual Studio 2010 and LabWindows 2009. The applications can be built on either an XP or Windows 7 box but will run ONLY on XP. No matter how they're built they always hang on Windows 7. I've also gone backwards to Visual Studio 2005 and LabWindows 8.5 with the same result.
Has anyone seen this issue on Windows 7? I'm assuming that it's a Windows 7 issue since XP is fine and it also hangs in XP mode on Windows 7.
Thanks,
Matt

Hi Matt,
Could you create a small version of the code that recreates the issue and post it? This way we can try to reproduce the issue and see what could be causing the problem.
Thank you!

  • ITunes 10.6 hangs on Windows 7

iTunes 10.6 hangs on Windows 7  on iTunes startup.  My current page is the iTunes Store, and I see iTunes start up, and the progress bar on the top line shows "Accessing iTunes Store..." with the stripy progress bar moving for about 10 seconds.  Then it stops moving and the whole application hangs, with the Windows 7 spinner telling me to wait.  No Windows controls work (I can't close the window or stop the application).  At this point, I have to either reboot or use Task Manager to kill iTunes.  No amount of waiting works, and uninstall / reinstall iTunes does not resolve the issue.

    Close your iTunes,
    Go to command Prompt -
(Win 7/Vista) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES, right mouse click "Command Prompt", choose "Run as Administrator".
    (Win XP SP2 & above) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES/Command Prompt
In the "Command Prompt" screen, type in
    netsh winsock reset
    Hit "ENTER" key
    Restart your computer.
If you do get a prompt after restart windows to remap LSP, just click NO.
Now launch your iTunes and see if it is working now.
If you are still having these type of problems after trying the winsock reset, refer to this article to identify which software in your system is inserting LSP:

  • Windows 7 install hangs at "Windows is loading files ..." on MBA

I have been trying to install Windows 7 Ultimate but each time the install hangs at "Windows is loading files ..." on reboot. I am using a Windows install DVD using an external drive. When the install hangs, the DVD is not being accessed. I have tried several times and it leads to the same result. I have tried different partition sizes (20 GB - 50 GB), no luck.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Solution
I have a macmini bought in mid2011 with OS Lion on it. AS it doesnot come with an optical drive, I bought an LG DVD drive and used the windows 7 (64bit) installation DVD. It stopped at windows is loading files....
I tired couple of other options like using flash dirve but it dint work.
The I went to Apple's Genius Bar, and they put the installation dvd into their dvd drive (by Apple). Then the windows installed perfectly fine.
When asked they said it must be the problem of DVD and I found out that it actually is the cause. Apple products require dual layer optical drives but in general the optical drives we buy can only read single layer dvds. So I got to fix the problem by borrowing their dvd drive in genius bar and now i m good to go.....
    Hope this helps

    Hi,
    Any update here?
Could you please have a share when using what application to save files, it hangs?
Did we configure any network drive? We may temporary remove the mapped network drive and then check if the save as would work.

You cannot disable UEFI if your Windows 7 was installed with UEFI.  The System Reserved partition is different for UEFI than for legacy BIOS and your Windows 7 system will not boot in the legacy BIOS mode.
Booting from DVD should not give you the Windows logo because it should boot into the DVD setup mode.

  • Can anyone help me to get rid of a "hanging" site/window that I inadvertently clicked and that I now can't escape?

When I try either to close this "hanging" site/window or to return to the previous page/site, a second, pop-up window appears and asks whether I'm sure that I "want to navigate away from this page"; however, no yes-or-no option/buttons are visible (maybe they're at the ottom of the pop-up, but the pop-up's bottom margin extends below the bottom of mny screen, and I can't scroll down to it). Also, the hanging window has a "jump" tab (and that word also has been inserted in front of the "Mozilla Firefox (Private Browsing)" banner at the top of my screen. Last, toward the upper right of the window is a lozenge/button reading Install Missing Plugins" (an injunction that I ignored).

Mine does the same thing occasionally, is your phone jailbroken? Sometimes it will work if you delete the book and reinstall it or put your phone into airplane mode then turn it back off.

  • Iphone hangs up windows xp

When I try to connect Iphone to the coputer it hangs up windows XP Pro. I am running Itune7.5.0.20. I activated the Iphone successfully. But now when I try to connect it to the computer inorder to Sync Calendar and Phone directory it hangs up the Windows. One of the Apple Sales Rep mentioned that he had the same problem and had to uninstall the Norten security program. I had to reset the Iphone before I could connect again. I will appreciate any hints to resolve this issue and reports of similar experience. [email protected]

This Windows OS issue doesn't really seem like its related to the iPhone or iTunes. You can find some general tips here, but you may want to check the Microsoft support site or contact the PC manufacturer.
Try restarting the PC after removing any CDs or floppy disks from it.

    Hi
Does it happen after the OS installation from the Toshiba recovery CD???
Did you install any further programs???
I have noticed a similar freezing on my notebook. Mostly it happened because the background process did not close and therefore the notebook could not force the shut down. In my case it was a adobe acrobat reader which could not close.
I think you should defragment you HDD and use the CCleaner freeware application.
This program cleans program errors and corrects the registry entries.
Try it! Maybe its not a serious issue!

  • W520 hangs on Windows 7 Pro x64 installation, cannot boot live CD

    Hi Everyone!
I decided to reach out to the community for some intelligence that I have not been able to obtain elsewhere.  Here's my story in details in case someone can find a break on any of them ...
I purchased my W520 in November, 2011 with 1 year warranty and used it without issues until last week.  One morning when I started the laptop, it loaded Windows 7 Pro x64, I logged in.  After loading the desktop, I locked the screen/user and stepped out for a minute.  When I came back, the screen was frozen and after a few minutes of waiting I manually powered off the laptop.
Upon restart, Windows 7 would hang on the logo screen and restart in a few minutes.  I was able to restart under Safe Mode, however, which enabled me to create the rescue DVD's.
I decided to re-install the OS, but the installation would hang on the Windows logo screen again.  This was also attempted with all accessories (usb kbd, usb wireless mouse, and display I also tried w/o the battery) disconnected. Then I thought, that it could be a bad hdd - I tried installing XP Pro but got the BSOD with a bad hdd error code.  At that point, I attached the hdd to a working PC and ran checkdisk which found no errors. The problem persisted even with unpartitioned disk and a spare hdd that I had on hand.  What intrigued me was that no linux live CD could load (it would freeze on the loading screen).
After this, I flashed the BIOS to the newest version without any issues during the flash process.  The Windows 7 Pro x64 installation would hang again at the usual logo screen.  I also tried with different DVD source... Memtest did not show any problems either.
Then I called an IT support guy who was not experienced with the issue and took the laptop for bench testing, and after four days of back and forth the IT company was inconclusive that the issues is most likely caused by a bad BIOS.
This happened around March 21, 2013 after Windows 7 installed updates (not sure if this could be related).  The weird part is that the W520 worked fine for a year and four months and when it crashed I was able to use Safe Mode, access and flash BIOS, but was unable to run new installation or live CD's.
Is there anything that I am missing?  Has anyone had the same experience?  What is the conclusion according to you - it is really bad BIOS chip or just a UEFI-related setting?
Thanks for reading and trying to help!

    Sir:
I'm not entirely sure what you mean when you write "BIOS v1.40 settings that will make it possible to install Windows 7  Pro 64", but, you can download the 1.40 BIOS (which appears to be the most recent release) from this link: Device Driver File Matrix - W520 , and if you have any concerns about the BIOS settings not being appropriate, just enter the BIOS setup manager (tap the F1 key repeatedly when the laptop is booting) and select 'revert to defaults' or similar.

  • Windows 8.1 hangs in Windows Update trying to get driver

We have added a Surface Pro 3 running 64 bit Win 8.1 to our home network.  Our desktop running XP has an HP LaserJet 1200 printer attached via USB and it is shared. Our notebook running XP has no problem printing to the LaseJet 1200. On the Surface when trying to add the printer Win 8.1 finds the LaserJet 1200 and invokes Windows Update, presumably to download a 64 bit driver for the printer. Windows Update hangs, that is runs and does not stop. We've let it run for nearly an hour before ending it. I've looked at the HP site for drivers and it seems to imply that Windows Update is the correct way to get th driver we need. Is there another way to do this?

  • BlackBerry Desktop v6.1.0 B38 Won't install and hangs on Windows 7 64 bit

I'm new here and would be very grateful for your help.
When i try to install v6.1.0 B38 on my Windows 7 64 bit PC I have problems and it will not install.
It goes as far as telling me that it has installed and would i like to run it.
I then click yes and it attempts to start but just hangs on the grey BlackBerry splash screen and only a restart seems to stop it. Also when I hover the mouse over the logo it just shows the circular windows eggtimer cursor type thing.
I have tried quite a few things with no success and I'm really stuck here and was just wondering if anyone has the same problem and is there a fix for it? I'm at my wits end and ready to try anything.
My PC is in good working order with no other dodgy programs. I tried re installing C++ and that other program but it didn't help any. I'm extremely grateful for your help. As have tried uninstalling and reinstalling many times now.
    Cheers
    Paul

Hello -- sorry for the no reply...from what you posted, you'd pretty much tried everything...but here is a much more drastic set of steps you can try. For reference, I can attest that it can work just fine on Win7X64...so there must be something wrong that is causing it to fail in your situation, and we'll just have to figure out what it is. Nevertheless, here are my thoughts...
I suggest the following steps (insert plenty of reboots of your PC...not just restarts, but full power down reboots). Also, it is advised that you be logged into the PC on an account with full admin rights. Further, under Vista/Win7, use the "Run As Administrator" option for everything.
Further, it has also been reported that when your user profile on windows (type 'echo %userprofile%' in the command prompt) contains spaces, then the installer will not work. In order to solve this issue, log out of your Windows account and log back in using the local Administrator account (or any other account name without spaces) and install the desktop (for all users).
    1) Remove your device OS update package from your PC (add/remove programs)
    2) Cleanly uninstall the RIM Desktop Software:
KB02206 How to perform a clean uninstall of BlackBerry Desktop Software
Some have reported that manually editing the registry and removing all keys related to Research In Motion, Puma, BlackBerry, etc. to be helpful. Sorry, but there's no way to give you any kind of list...
Others have reported the use of a registry cleansing tool to also be helpful
Still others have reported the use of your original PIM (e.g., Outlook, NOTES, etc.) installation CD, running the "repair" process, to be helpful in some situations
    3) Get a fresh download of the RIM Desktop Software:
    http://us.blackberry.com/apps-software/desktop/
    4) Download (to your PC) a fresh copy of your device OS package from your carrier:
    http://na.blackberry.com/eng/support/downloads/download_sites.jsp
    5) Install the Desktop Software to your PC -- don't run it yet.
    6) Install (also to your PC), the device OS package
    7) Now run the Desktop Software and see if it is successful.
Hopefully that will get things going again. In the worst case scenarios, it's been reported here that completely rebuilding the Win7 OS from scratch can also work. But, again, each situation is different, so it's impossible to know anything 100%.
Good luck and let us know!
