Threads from the corba threadpool can take a long time killing
I'm using the bounded threadpool (well, actually, I have changed the default unbounded threadpool to a bounded one and injected it using the endorsed dir mechanism - but the behaviours was the same before I did that - except that I then had 32000 threads in some cases) for handling corba events I receive from an ORB. I can see the number of threads increase and decrease as expected based on the load.
However, sometimes everything hangs: The GUI freezes, I start loosing network packages and other unfortunate things occur. This coincides with the removal of threads (according to YourKit), e.g. last evening the removal of 14 threads took ~30 seconds and during that time absolutely nothing else appeared to happen. My two other Java processes were also for all intents and purposes dead (also according to YourKit) during that period.
Is this related to http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=1194877 in any way? This seems such a long standing issue that I find it hard to understand that this has not been resolved in any way. Is there a way around this problem?
If it's not related, what can it then be? I'm not even sure where to look? Is it the Java implementation, the linux kernel, some combination with the hardware?
I'm using SUNJava 1.5 u10 on Fedora Core 5 linux kernel 2.6.18-1.2239.fc5 on AMD64 hardware.
Follow-up to myself since no-one else has replied:
Could it be related to this bug [http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=6372405] and if it is, does the poster mean JDK 6, NOT 7?

Hi All,
I've seen this problem multiple times, especially with Windows 7 64-bit versions and Enterprise edition. The source of the problem appears to be the Bonjour service that is installed in the background and set to "Automatic" when installing certain 3rd
party applications. Apple applications like iTunes and Adobe applications like Acrobat Professional and Creative Suites have been known to cause this problem. I've also seen virtualization software like VMWare and VirtualBox cause similar issues
with network adapters.
The solution in most of the cases I've come across has been to stop and disable the Bonjour service. The Bonjour service also masquerades as a service with a name of the format "##Id_String1.6844F930_blahblahblah". Here's how to disable this service
in Windows 7:
Right-Click on Computer > Select 'Manage'
Expand the 'Services and Applications' section in the bottom of the Left-Nav dialog and Select 'Services'
Sort the Services list by name and look for either "Bonjour" or the "##Id_String..." name mentioned above
Right-Click on the service and select 'Properties'
Click the 'Stop' button to stop the service
Select 'Disabled' from the 'Startup type' drop down list
Click 'Apply' and then 'OK'
Reboot your machine and see if the "Multiple Networks" issue is resolved. If so, you should have internet connectivity again.
Hope this helps.
cheers,

Exchange 2013 mailbox takes a long time to connect with Outlook 2010
We just installed a 2013 CAS/Mailbox server in our Exchange 2007 environment and are running in coexistence while we migrate users over. So far I have only moved one 2007 mailbox over, a new account used for testing. Everything is working fine, OWA,
ECP, ActiveSync, etc... When connecting Outlook to a 2007 mailbox autodiscover takes a couple seconds and Outlook opens fine. The problem is when connecting Outlook to a mailbox on the 2013 server. Autodiscover takes about a minute before it finally finds
the settings and the mailbox takes about 30 seconds to open everytime. It generally times out, I click retry and the mailbox opens. Once in everything is good but the initial loading always takes a long time, double the time when opening Outlook with a shared
mailbox attached. All autodiscover is autodiscover.domain.com, Exchange 2007 is all legacymail.domain.com aside from the components that need to point to 2013. We do not have any certificate issues, well that's not true, at some time in the last couple years
someone applied a 3rd party cert to our domain.com root but not sure if that would cause this issue. Also, these are internal clients we are trying to get going with the 2013 mailbox, not external. I just applied a registry change that helped someone else
out there by disabling IPv6 for all components but that did not work for us MS KB929852. Any suggestions? Right now I am thinking of changing the internalURI for autodiscover to the FQDN of the server but wanted to see if anyone had any ideas.
JeremyHi Angela, thanks for the response. I cannot post links or pictures as my account has not been verified?
The autoconfiguration tests passed, I will paste the xml below. Ping times were all under 1ms. When I entered the IP for the 2013 serve I received errors that the connection to Exchange is unavailable followed by another one that the name cannot be resolved.
I did this test by removing the Outlook profile and creating one manually without Autodiscover. I am able to ping the server by all names from the command prompt.
Our autodiscover.domain.com points to our 2013 server and the name is resolvable both internally and externally. Our certificates cover the internal server name fqdn as well as external names. I am doing all testing in the internal network.

PDF documents take a long time to load on T520
I bought my T520 this past summer and I have been happy with it, except it can take a long time to open PDF docs, between 5 and 30 seconds. Whats up? How can I fix this?
My system:
T520
Core i7

Thanks forEither adjust some settings or uninstall it. The issue is probably you have turned on some 'features' unknowingly. Some of the slow down are OCR, User Readibility (for the impaired eyes) etc, Adobe is trying to convert words into text to be read out?
The other possibility is that you are opening a PDF file that has a large gigantic pictures (vector based) or that the fonts are 'special'. These take up lots of calculations. To test this, download a small PDF file and see if the slowdown still occurs. If it does, something is wrong with the internal structure of your PDF file
My suggestion is to download the latest Adobe reader X and install this version, it's faster than the default Adobe 8 or 9 that comes with the lenovo. -

Hi, original poster here. I did not realize this would generate more discussion so I never checked back. I still had my warranty, so I took it to the store and got it repaired. The original problem I had was a screen with this icon flashing when I attempted to boot it up:
When I took it to the store, they told me that my computer was unable to communicate with the hard drive. I had this same problem three times in two months where this screen reappeared. Each time I went back to the store and they said the cause was different, but they were all hardware issues that physically made it impossible to communicate with the hard drive. After the third time, they simply replaced my laptop and I haven't had the same problem.
So in short: The reason you can't reinstall or move anything when you encounter this screen appears to be because nothing can communicate with the hard drive in the first place. You can't reach the disk or anything on it. So I don't believe it's possible to do anything besides take it to a physical store and have it fixed. -
Hi i insttalled the free trial 3O days MacScan on OsX10.5 is it normal that for full scaning it takes so long time more even than one day?! on the other hand this application hasn't any uninstaller on image disc ,so how can i uninstal it from my hard? Thanks
Get rid of the tracking cookies. They are used to profile and track your browsing history. While they are privacy invading, by calling them spyware, MacScan is being a little dramatic in trying to sell you its crap. And in the future, for whatever browser you use, don't allow third-party cookies.
To prevent tracking, get Ghostery. In addition to having Ghostery and forbidding third-party cookies, I clear out all cookies from one browsing session to another. If you always do that, you won't have any tracking cookies to worry about, so you won't need MacScan to find them for you. Btw, MacScan finds the tracking cookies in the first few minutes of scanning; if you want to use it for that, then that's all the time you need to run it for. But, as I said, you won't have any tracking cookies around if you just remove all cookies and don't allow third-party cookies. As soon as you visit a site that needs them, you'll just get new ones. No problem.
Read all about cookies here.

OK. If you believe that.
When the disk is starting to die it can be bad for a moment and then be good for a while. If there was no problem while you were checking it of course it shows up good.
I tell you those are the signs of a disk that is about to die.

I want to take files from my PC (using a Seagate external hard drive) then plug this Seagate External hard drive into my Mac Book Pro and move the files from the Seagate External Hard drive onto my Time Capsule. I do not want to put these files on my Mac. How do I do this? Where do I put these files on my Time Capsule? Will it affect the functioning of my Time Capsule?
Mixing files with data is not always great idea.
See info here.
Q3 http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
Why not just connect the PC directly to the TC by ethernet and copy the files over?
It is hugely faster and much less mucking around.
In windows load the airport utility for windows.. if you have not already as this will help you access the drive.
There is more info here.
