Thunderbird-- outlook email account spinning beach ball

TB has been working well. 4 email accounts. Three all OK .Have an outlook email address as one mail account. Yesterday sent an email with 2 small attachments. This seemed to hang but the mail did go. Ever since when i move to any folder on this account (inbox, send ,drafts) I get a spinning beach ball for 10-30 seconds. Longer for the sent folder. I also get occasional server may have disconnected messages (have never seen this before) Tried starting without add ons - no change Tried deleting account and adding it again- no change . The other 3 email accounts are fine.

Many thanks for the suggestions. I have compacted the folders and turned off copies in sent folder. I still have the same problem although moving between folders is perhaps slightly quicker...mostly still get the spinning beachball for 5-20 seconds ... I haven't seen the outlook server disconnected pop up for a couple days though which is an improvement

    There is no such Trojan or other malware known today that will do that using OS X nor has there ever been one. The most probable explanation is that somebody hacked into your e-mail account on the server, so you should change that password to something stronger right away. If it had come from your Mac then there would almost certainly be copies of those messages in your Sent Mail mailbox.

    I have a Folder called "Pictures"  (My Pictures seems a bit "Windowsy" to me)
    I don't have a Media folder inside there.
    It would help to know if this is actually within the iTunes Library
    Having said that I tend to use Eric's Method.

    It shows where I have used Faces (from iPhoto) and Defaults (Login pic choices for the Account pic).
    My iChat/Messages pic is the same Signature pic as used here and is in the Recents Tab on show.
    You can even use the Camera if one is attached (Mac Minis and Mac Pro require External Cameras).
    Drag and Drop is my preferred method.

  • Added user accounts all freeze (spinning beach ball)

    Why do all user accounts (other than my main administrator account) freeze after logging in. The Finder freezes with the spinning beach ball just when the account seems to have logged in properly. I created new accounts (thinking that my old accounts were corrupted), but the new accounts did the same thing. My main user account is fine. I haven't used the other accounts for a while now, so why would they suddenly have problems now?! Is something corrupted in my system?!
    It almost seems like the Finder is waiting for something to load, but it never gets loaded-so it gives me the beach ball while it waits. Is this what is happening? I can't even force the finder to quit. I have to force the computer to shut off by using the power switch.

    Try this.
    Determine the Username for one of these other accounts.
    Write down this chosen AccountUsername.
    In your main admin account, Open Terminal, found in Applications/Utilities, and enter into terminal this command, (substitute the theAccountUsername with the actual account name you wrote down)
    sudo rm /Users/theAccountUsername/Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow.plist
    then type in your admin password. It will not appear as you type, then press Return, then type
    exit
    and quit Terminial.
    Log out and log into that usernames's account that you just worked on.
    See how that goes.
    Note: if you need to Force Quit, try the four key press of Control + Option + Command + Escape to open the Force Quit Dialogue box and try and Force Quit Finder. That may give you a chance to exit normally.
    Also by doing those hard shutdowns you may need to run Repair Disk from the boot Installation Disk just to check that the file structure is OK.

  • Safari won't open... spinning beach ball

    Out of the blue this morning, Safari won't open. I click it, the icon bounces, and then I get the spinning beach ball. If I go to the Force Quit Applications window, it says it's not responding. Any ideas what may be causing this and how to fix it?

    What is the exact wording of the message you see, and what are you doing when you see it?
    These are the steps I took this morning, again, along with the wording.  Before these steps, I logged into my account through the Google browser, and verified that I had a purchase in October of OS X Lion: 
    1 - booted computer under recovery.
    2 - Disk Utility - Repair Disk  (Result: The Volume New Macbook appears to be okay)
    3 - Disk Utility - Repair Disk Permissions - (Result:0 Repaired - Permissions Repair Complete)
    4 - Reinstall Mac OS - "Your computer's eligibility will be verified with Apple - OK
    5 - "To Continue, you must agree to the terms and conditions" - Agree
    6 - Select New Macbook - Install
    7 - signing into Apple Store  (Result: This Apple ID has not purchased Lion)
    8 - rebooted and tried to launch App Store - back to spinning beach balls, along with all other internet apps; Safari, Mail, App Store, iTunes, etc. 
    Aps not affected: Google Chrome, Outlook (as long as I don't click on an email connected to an HTTPS server) and anything not on the internet.
    I hope this helps and thank you for your advice.  I wish I could use my Snow Leopard disks; my dvd drive is broken.

  • Endless spinning beach ball / system crash report

    I am now getting the endless spinning beach ball for about 5 minutes every time I go from one application to another. It's often if I've been in Word or Photoshop, & I go back to Firefox to look at emails; it spins & spins before I can do anything. I also had some sort of a crash yesterday while I was out of the room, so I wasn't doing anything. I came back to find the attached long crash report; it means nothing to me. Is there anyone out there who can interpret this? I had to save it in several screenshots as it was very long (& this isn't even all of it). Thanks.

    Banks everywhere seem to try to encourage customers to install it, but in my experience (3 bank accounts) they don't insist.
    Unfortunately, as I said earlier, it just doesn't seem to work well for many users of OS X (there are numerous threads on here about it). A couple of years ago I installed it when my bank started pushing it but immediately started having kernel panics. Removing it fixed things immediately.
    Occasionally someone from Trusteer has appeared on here offering to help, but generally soon disappear when they start getting flack .

  • Spinning beach ball of death on opening mail

    I've been using mail since i had my Mac OS X 10.4.6, however, when I updated to 10.4.9, as soon as i open the program, i get the spinning beach ball of death, making me force quit the application. basically, i cannot use my mail application!!!

    Quit the Mail.app and using the Finder go to Home > Library > Mail.
    Delete the newly created Mail folder.
    Move the original Mail folder from the Desktop back to the same location. Copy the original Mail folder and place the copy on the Desktop for backup purposes.
    Using the Finder go to Home > Library > Preferences > com.apple.mail.plist. Move the com.apple.mail.plist file to the Desktop.
    Note: Moving the com.apple.mail.plist file out of the Preferences folder will require re-entering all email account information when re-launching Mail.
    Launch Mail and if successful, decline any prompt provided to import mailboxes. After re-entering all email account information the same as before, the Mail.app should rediscover the existing account named folders and mailboxes at Home > Library > Mail.
    If this is successful, you can delete the copy of the Mail folder and the old com.apple.mail.plist file from the Desktop.

  • Mavericks Screen Capture causes spinning beach ball

    Trained by experience never to install a brand new operating system on top of a perfectly functioning one (unless I want to risk many wasting times and losing productivity), to test out the new Mac OS, I installed Mavericks on an external FireWire drive by upgrading a fresh install of Snow  Leopard, updated to its maximum version. Nothing else was on the volume, for I had used Disk Utility to securely erase and content and overwrite the volume with zeros.
    Immediately after the Mavericks, I looked at the System Profile, taking some screen captures of selected windows. While Mavericks successfully captured the screens, it failed to display them when I selected one and hit the space bar. Instead, mavericks presented a perpetually spinning beach ball that prevented me from doing anything else on the Mac. I was forced to shut down.
    Upon restart back into Mavericks, I encountered the same problem. I had to force power off again.
    After rebooting into Mountain Lion on my internal hard drive, I ran a complete series of hard drive maintenance utilities involving all the tools I have, including Disk Utility, Drive Genius, Disk Warrior, and Tech Tool Pro. All ran successfully and reported no problems. I then capped things by running iDefrag to eliminate file fragmentation and to optimize the volume. With several hours of labor invested in preparing the external hard disk, downloading Mavericks' installer, running the Mavericks installer, performing all the pertinent maintenance routines I could think of, and finally optimizing the volume, which has no other software on it besides the new Apple operating system, I restarted the Mavericks volume. I then took a fresh screen capture, selected it, pressed the space bar, and I still got that infernal spinning beach ball.
    I let it run for at least half an hour as I returned to watching a football game, hoping things would finally get cleared up. They did not. The ball still spun. I could not even get to the Finder to peek into the Force Quit command under the Apple icon. So, as originally condemned, I was compelled to hold down the power button to regain control of my computer, which this new, appropriately named operating system had wrested from me.
    Anyone having a similar problem? Anyone aware of a sure-fire solution, other than to avoid relying on this new operating system, which must be my policy until such glitches get fixed?
    At least you know now why I consider it unwise to install a brand new OS atop of one that has served you well.

    OK, it’s Wednesday now, late afternoon, following a long yesterday, spent exclusively on getting Mavericks installed, a day which continued well into night, approaching the sun rise, until I collapsed. No one can tell me that the Mavericks installation is without errors! Your mileage may differ, if you’re lucky. But if you had to go through what I just did, you’ll long for the days of System 7, when all you had to do was shove a half-dozen floppy disks into a floppy drive to get your Mac up and running without such angst.
    SHORT ANSWER:
    After many twists and turns that Apple should have foreseen and not inflicted upon customers, I finally managed to get Mavericks installed on my external Firewire hard drive.
    I did follow your lead, Baltwo, that the nature of the problem might lay in corrupt preferences files on the primary Account, but, as I attempted a couple of days, I modified your suggestion that I cherry-pick which plist files might be good vs. which might be corrupt, by deleting the whole **** account. A couple of days ago, my intuition told me that doing that was the wiser way to proceed;  today I felt compelled to do exactly that, because I had no other choice.
    The reasons I had to do that is elaborated upon below.
    LONGER EXPLANATION and DETAILS:
    As I explained in the message I composed on Tuesday morning, I felt so insecure that I did not obtain a well-functioning operating system that I had decided to start the installation all over from scratch.
    It took all day Monday to again use Disk Utility to securely erase the volume and prepare it for the new installation. When I tried to short-cut the process by doing a Quick Erase, the volume refused to accept the installation of Snow Leopard 10.6.3 from the DVD. On top of that, I again encountered difficulties in installing Snow Leopard from the DVD, because the installer just could not close the deal. The gauge runs up to the 99% mark, and it hangs there saying that it is “Moving items into place.” Sure, it is!
    I’m a patient guy, so I let the installer do its thing for about four hours while I watched the World Series game. (Yeah, Red Sox!) But by the time the game was over, so was my patience. I had to Force Power Off the Mac and restart it.
    Since I have no confidence in an operating system whose installer failed to do its job properly, I felt that I had to do more. Before I did that, though, I did a Google search to find out if my experience was unique. It is not! The forums are full of people who have complained about this very same hanging problem ever since the Snow Leopard DVD was released. Great, I thought. Now what do I do?
    I decided to the Apple support site and download the 1.x GB combo updater to Snow Leopard 10.6.8 in the hopes that the upgrade process would cure whatever issues cropped up during the incomplete installation by the DVD. After downloading that combo disk image, installing 10.6.8, restarting the Mac under 10.6.8, and getting all the software updates applicable to that version, a few tests, supplemented by a running a whole barrage of maintenance utilizes to fix permissions, repair the disk, rebuilt the directory, seemed to indicate that I did finally achieve a solid installation of Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and all its trimming.
    To save myself any future agony of having to go through this kind of winding road installation again, I used SuperDuper to create a disk image of the entire volume.  That disk image is stored on another Firewire volume, ready to burned at some future date onto a BluRay disc for safe-keeping and backup.
    With Snow Leopard safely installed on the volume and sporting one user Account, I was ready to use the Mavericks installer package that I had downloaded last Saturday, when I first began this process, to upgrade to Apple’s latest and greatest OS. Unfortunately, the installation process failed in the same way that the Snow Leopard installer failed. The installer just could not get over the hump of closing the deal. Once I got the installer started, I went to bed.
    Four hours later, the installer still had not completed its job, again getting to the 99% mark, and just hanging there. Again, I had to Power Off the Mac. Upon restarting with the Option held down, I elected to start up using the built-in Recovery feature.
    That seemed to work, but only sort of. I was able to get a Mavericks desktop, but the User account had absolutely no privileges to do a **** thing. It could not open its own Home folder to see what was in it. It could not complete the screen capture process, because I had no permission to save the picture anywhere, like on the Desktop.
    In System Preferences, I tried to increase the size of the cursor, but that failed. In Finder preferences, I tried to make the hard drives show up on the desktop, but that failed, too. I ran permissions in Disk Utility; that did no good. Nothing worked! I could not even change anything related to my User account, because I had no permission to do so. Imagine that: my only account was an Administer account to which I had no access. I would not have thought such a thing could be possible.
    I was caught in a loop, stranded on a Mobius Strip, walking on the wild side, surfing the waves of a brand new operating system corrupted by its own installation process.
    Not a good thing at all.
    Since the first installment had also resulted in a bizarre set of user accounts ending up with QuickLooks being declared the winner of a new account the system decided to create for me, I think it is reasonably safe to conclude that there is some kind of a bug, or flaw, in the Apple upgrade / installation procedure that needs some attention by Apple system engineers. None of this kind of stuff I have delineated at some length should be happening to anyone who owns a Mac.
    And, Baltwo, even though I had kept uppermost in my mind your suggestion about creating a new account merely to ferret out which preference files might be corrupt and which might be OK, I decided that I did not want to take any chances at all with this extremely messed User account, which had worked fine in Snow Leopard, but had somehow got corrupted during the upgrade. So, as before, I decided to (1) create a brand new Administrator account; (2) log out from the useless User account in which I had no privileges whatsoever; (3) log in with the brand new Adminstrator; and (4) delete that useless User account entirely, completely, and forever.
    At first, I was a little hesitant about deleting the first Administrator account that existed in my Users and Groups pane. I did not even know if such a thing could be done. So, I referred to my David Pogue reference books, and I did a Google search for “Delete Home User Mac” to see what others knew about this. Everyone described the standard way to delete an account; no one even mentioned any prohibition about deleting the original User account. So, I went ahead and deleted it, without encountering the slightest problem in doing so. I even followed up with before and after Terminal commands to see if that useless User account was truly gone, and it definitely went poof. Since I lacked permissions to create any documents at all within that former Home folder, getting rid of it was easy. I think that the System was just as glad to trash it as I was.
    Hopefully, whatever corruption occurred during the Mavericks installation and upgrade process was restricted to the preference files associated with that messed-up, original Administrator account so that I can begin exploring Mavericks with a perfectly pristine operating system. Before I start tweaking it or adding stuff to it, my next step will be to use SuperDuper to create a disk image of the entire volume, so that, in the future, I will have a clean set of system of file to install on this external Firewire volume, or on any other internal hard drive I choose to install Mavericks later on. A Bluray disc will contain that disc image for safekeeping when it’s time to remove it from the destination volume where it gets created.
    As to the tardiness of my reply, it is caused by the exorbitant amount of time—four days!—it took me to trek along this twisting, winding path of installing Mavericks, as well as a glitch in the mismatch of similarly looking User Names associated with similarly looking Apple ID accounts and similarly looking User Names associated with nearly identical Email Addresses that do not convert from one to the other, as, for example, mac.com does to me.com.
    As I learned from Apple Staff who responded to my report that I was being locked out of the Apple Discussions community, there are four pieces of information that must match up for each Apple ID account, and my data had slipped out of sync. Now I know why, during Apple’s changeover in the formatting of the Apple Discussions section, I lost all those “points” I had accumulated in helping others, not that I track such things, and I could not find where my previous discussions were.
    That’s also why I may be able to award anyone points for helping me in this thread, but I’m dialing in under the “other” Apple ID, not the one I used to create this topic. Close readers will observe the slight difference.

  • Mavericks mail hanging (spinning beach ball)

    Since upgrading yesterday the Mail application is constantly freezing (spinning beach ball) and the only option is force-quit. Sometimes happend when I try to draft a new mail, sometimes when I read and email and sometimes on its own when I come back to my computer.
    I can make it happen 100% of the time when I try toselect  Mail > Preferences
    The dialog never comes up and I get the spinning beach ball.

    Same problem. Tried everything. I've looked a lot of places and tried a lot of things- and logged nearly 15 hours of time with the highest level of Apple support and got nowhere. Even had them harvest my data logs and uploaded all of that.
    Then I found a post on another messageboard that did it for me. Take a look at your:
    username/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/Accounts.plist
    Instead of being a few KB (as it should have been), mine was 40 MB with tens of thousands of duplicated Hotmail account entries.
    I knew all of my mail settings, so I just trashed this file and relaunched the app, then manually added back all of my mail account settings via the mail interface.
    Poof- no more issues. No Mail hang. No preference files launching and eating up enormous CPU and RAM. No problems whatsoever. Hope it helps you all too.
    Note: this does not eliminate messages, only settings. So the fix takes all of 5 minutes if you remember your mail server settings.

  • I am having trouble with a LaCie 526 monitor working with my new Mac Pro.  When I boot up, I see the sign-in screen for a second, then it disappears, reappears with some of the screen pixelated and the spinning beach ball -- and then freezes. Any thoughts

    The LaCie is connected via DVI to thunderbolt adapter.  It had been working, and then when I switched off the computer and restarted several days later, I see the signon screen flash quickly, followed by nothing, followed by the signon screen and spinning beach ball and it simply freezes.  Any thoughts?

    When you have kernel panics, the pertinent information is in the panic report.
    These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
    Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
    In the Console window, select
              DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
    (not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
    There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". Select the most recent one. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
    If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
    In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
    Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report.
    I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.

  • Spinning beach ball woes on 27 inch iMac

    We have a mid 2010 27 inch iMac (and also a late 2010 13 inch MacBook Air, from which I am writing this post). About 6 months ago it was starting to get spinning beach balls, which I attributed to not having updated the OS (then 10.7). Having upgraded the Air to Mavericks with success, I also upgraded the iMac to Mavericks, and the beach balls got much, much worse, rendering the thing nearly unusable. I cannot for the life of me figure out what the issue is, particularly because the Air, which is about the same vintage, is working great under the same setup. Can someone who has not been staring at this problem for 6 months help?
    Here's what I've got:
    As I mentioned, mid 2010 27-inch iMac, 1TB hard drive, about half-full, backing up to a 2 TB Time Capsule.
    We have two wifi networks to cover the whole house; one is integrated with the cable company's provided router and sits in the basement, and the other is the Time Capsule hooked up to the cable company's VoIP router upstairs. Because you cannot use the Time Capsule to extend an existing network if it is not an Apple network, I resorted to setting each wifi network up independently (separately connected to ethernet). My Air navigates this just fine, as do our iPads/iPhones, and I don't notice a speed difference between the two networks (assuming I have equally good reception wherever I am).
    Notably, the Time Capsule seems to randomly stop broadcasting wifi every now and then (at intervals of a few days to a couple weeks), which requires a restart to get it working again. (This could be totally unrelated.)
    The iMac was at 10.7 when the beach balls started; upgrading to Mavericks made the slowness/beachballs worse. As I noted, Mavericks did not cause any trouble with the Air.
    The beach balls seem to coincide with a complete stall in everything the computer is doing. After the stall ends, the computer can be fairly speedy, so it's as if it pauses for several seconds to a minute or so to think very hard, and then goes back to its business.
    There is usually a slight improvement if I shut down and boot up again, but it gums up pretty quickly.
    Here's what I've done:
    Started with 4GB RAM; added another 8 (total 12) after this all started. Equally bad before and after.
    Stared at Activity Monitor and Console for long periods of time while watching for beach balls to try to detect a pattern.
    In Activity Monitor, memory pressure is fine (esp. now that I added 8 GB), no swap used. The two worst offenders under CPU usage seem to be kernel_task or WindowServer, but they are not always monopolizing the CPU at the times when it is stalled.
    In Console, the main two patterns seemed to be a frequent WindowServer "updates forcibly disabled" error, and what seemed like a constant browsing for wifi connections even though the computer was already connected to wifi. However, I couldn't figure out what either of these meant or what might be done to fix them.
    Used disk utility, repaired permissions, verified disk, etc. - everything was ok, although some permissions were repaired.
    Used third-party utilities, Onyx and iDefrag, to try to verify disk and clean things up. No significant problems detected, and no improvement.
    Various other methods of cleaning up -- eliminating old software or files that aren't being used, emptying trash, taking extra files off the desktop, etc. In particular, having read that Mail might have issues handling Google accounts, I eliminated a heavily-used Google account from Mail and got a separate, lighter-weight third-party app to handle that account. That did seem improve things at first, but we seem to be back to slowness and beach balls again.
    Final, last-ditch effort: backed up and then erased hard drive and (after another Disk Utility verify - still fine) did a clean install of Mavericks.
    It took several attempts to download the installer using the Time Capsule network (kept stalling); switched to the other (non-Apple) wifi network and it downloaded and installed fine.
    However, after the clean install, although it was not nearly as slow as before, amazingly, I still had spinning beach balls and hanging without having installed anything other than the OS.
    I made several attempts to get into the backup to selectively reinstall files. Could not mount backup using Time Capsule -- option-clicking and selecting "Browse Other Backups" did not actually get me to the other backup. Using Migration Assistant, could not get the backup to load, or the loading was taking an inordinately long period of time, so I gave up. (Also, every time I tried to quit Migration Assistant to try to discover the problem with the backup loading, it hung and I had to hard-restart.)
    So, since the clean install did not seem to fix the problem, and I was starting to worry about not being able to get to my backup, I have gone back to just restoring from the Time Capsule. It's telling me this will take over 200 hours.
    The one thing I haven't tried is shutting down the computer, lugging it upstairs, and connecting it to Time Capsule via ethernet, at least for the restoration. I will do this if I leave the computer overnight and it's still not done in the morning.
    I've done much searching of these discussion boards, and tried everything that seemed like a possible culprit. What am I missing? (Other than ditching this computer and buying a different one?)

    We have a mid 2010 27 inch iMac (and also a late 2010 13 inch MacBook Air, from which I am writing this post). About 6 months ago it was starting to get spinning beach balls, which I attributed to not having updated the OS (then 10.7). Having upgraded the Air to Mavericks with success, I also upgraded the iMac to Mavericks, and the beach balls got much, much worse, rendering the thing nearly unusable. I cannot for the life of me figure out what the issue is, particularly because the Air, which is about the same vintage, is working great under the same setup. Can someone who has not been staring at this problem for 6 months help?
    Here's what I've got:
    As I mentioned, mid 2010 27-inch iMac, 1TB hard drive, about half-full, backing up to a 2 TB Time Capsule.
    We have two wifi networks to cover the whole house; one is integrated with the cable company's provided router and sits in the basement, and the other is the Time Capsule hooked up to the cable company's VoIP router upstairs. Because you cannot use the Time Capsule to extend an existing network if it is not an Apple network, I resorted to setting each wifi network up independently (separately connected to ethernet). My Air navigates this just fine, as do our iPads/iPhones, and I don't notice a speed difference between the two networks (assuming I have equally good reception wherever I am).
    Notably, the Time Capsule seems to randomly stop broadcasting wifi every now and then (at intervals of a few days to a couple weeks), which requires a restart to get it working again. (This could be totally unrelated.)
    The iMac was at 10.7 when the beach balls started; upgrading to Mavericks made the slowness/beachballs worse. As I noted, Mavericks did not cause any trouble with the Air.
    The beach balls seem to coincide with a complete stall in everything the computer is doing. After the stall ends, the computer can be fairly speedy, so it's as if it pauses for several seconds to a minute or so to think very hard, and then goes back to its business.
    There is usually a slight improvement if I shut down and boot up again, but it gums up pretty quickly.
    Here's what I've done:
    Started with 4GB RAM; added another 8 (total 12) after this all started. Equally bad before and after.
    Stared at Activity Monitor and Console for long periods of time while watching for beach balls to try to detect a pattern.
    In Activity Monitor, memory pressure is fine (esp. now that I added 8 GB), no swap used. The two worst offenders under CPU usage seem to be kernel_task or WindowServer, but they are not always monopolizing the CPU at the times when it is stalled.
    In Console, the main two patterns seemed to be a frequent WindowServer "updates forcibly disabled" error, and what seemed like a constant browsing for wifi connections even though the computer was already connected to wifi. However, I couldn't figure out what either of these meant or what might be done to fix them.
    Used disk utility, repaired permissions, verified disk, etc. - everything was ok, although some permissions were repaired.
    Used third-party utilities, Onyx and iDefrag, to try to verify disk and clean things up. No significant problems detected, and no improvement.
    Various other methods of cleaning up -- eliminating old software or files that aren't being used, emptying trash, taking extra files off the desktop, etc. In particular, having read that Mail might have issues handling Google accounts, I eliminated a heavily-used Google account from Mail and got a separate, lighter-weight third-party app to handle that account. That did seem improve things at first, but we seem to be back to slowness and beach balls again.
    Final, last-ditch effort: backed up and then erased hard drive and (after another Disk Utility verify - still fine) did a clean install of Mavericks.
    It took several attempts to download the installer using the Time Capsule network (kept stalling); switched to the other (non-Apple) wifi network and it downloaded and installed fine.
    However, after the clean install, although it was not nearly as slow as before, amazingly, I still had spinning beach balls and hanging without having installed anything other than the OS.
    I made several attempts to get into the backup to selectively reinstall files. Could not mount backup using Time Capsule -- option-clicking and selecting "Browse Other Backups" did not actually get me to the other backup. Using Migration Assistant, could not get the backup to load, or the loading was taking an inordinately long period of time, so I gave up. (Also, every time I tried to quit Migration Assistant to try to discover the problem with the backup loading, it hung and I had to hard-restart.)
    So, since the clean install did not seem to fix the problem, and I was starting to worry about not being able to get to my backup, I have gone back to just restoring from the Time Capsule. It's telling me this will take over 200 hours.
    The one thing I haven't tried is shutting down the computer, lugging it upstairs, and connecting it to Time Capsule via ethernet, at least for the restoration. I will do this if I leave the computer overnight and it's still not done in the morning.
    I've done much searching of these discussion boards, and tried everything that seemed like a possible culprit. What am I missing? (Other than ditching this computer and buying a different one?)

    Hi, I have an early 2008 Mac Pro which has re-booting problems.

    Memory: 2GB 800 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM
    2 x 28GHz Quad Core Intel Xeon
    I am running OSX Yosemite Version 10.10
    My Mac Pro keeps re-booting. Last year I had to replace my graphics card. My original card was the ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT 255MB, and that is what I have now. At this precise moment my Mac Pro is running perfectly, except that it is slow and the spinning beach-ball keeps appearing. I have managed to do some work with the disk utilities, verifying, cleaning and partitioning. Some errors were found and when it was cleaned this seemed to help my Mac Pro to function properly. Although I am able to use my Mac Pro now, from day to day I still experience re-boot problems. Also quite unexpectedly my mac dictionary has an error, it closed itself down and will not open at all, I had the message to say that a report will be sent to Apple.
    I have tried starting my computer with an external hard drive fitted via a USB cable, I use for back-ups. This worked and I was able to wipe my hard drive clear and replace all info from the back up I had done only a few days ago.
    This worked for a few days and then the same problem started again.
    I am beginning to wonder if I need to buy a new hard drive.
    If there is anyone who has some answers to help me solve my problem, I would be most grateful.

    When you have the beachball activity, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.  
    These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
    Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
    The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
              SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
    from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
    Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
    Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
    Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
    The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
    Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

  • ITunes 8 won't recognize my ipod Classic 80GB (Spinning Beach Ball)

    I recently upgraded my iMac G5 to 10.5.5 and iTunes 8. When the first time I synced my iPod Classic after the upgrade, it erased everything on my iPod. Now when I start-up iTunes it works fine, however as soon as I connect my iPod I get the spinning beach ball and iTunes freezes. Sometimes if I leave it connected long enough (at least 15 minutes), it's recognized by iTunes and iTunes asks me to restore the iPod. I have done that, but once the restore is complete iTunes still does not recognize my iPod.
    In order to get out of iTunes I need to force quit it. A couple of other things to note. My iMac recognizes and mounts my iPod without any problems, as does Disk Utility. I have performed multiple resets of my iPod, repaired permissions, reset the PRAM and even tried reinstalling iTunes 8.
    Apparently a similar problem happened with iTunes 7.7, but I haven't read anything regarding this problem and iTunes 8. Has this happened to anybody else? Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

    Have you tested this issue in a different Mac OS X user account? To do so, click on the apple (top left), choose System Preferences and then open Accounts. You will probably have to click on the padlock in the lower left and enter your admin password, then click on the "+" symbol to add an account. Once created, just log out of your current account completely (option also under the apple) and then click on the test account to log into it.
    This would be useful in identifying if the issue is with the iPod itself, or maybe file in your original user account that needs to be recreated.

  • 10.4.7 Runs Slow, Spinning Beach Ball, "kass" takes over system

    To the helpful frequenters of this forum:
    Since installing Tiger and updating to 10.4.7 recently, I have experienced some major system slow downs on my computer. I am running a Titanium Powerbook G4 with 512MB RAM and 12GB free (from a 60GB hard drive).
    My problems seem to center on Mail 2 app, which runs very slowly when accessing the IMAP server (a problem I never experienced with Mail 1 in the days of Panther). However, it extends to other applications: when launching iTunes and Safari, I often get a spinning beach ball and a 10-20 second hang that I never had before. Sometimes closing programs can take a long time. Force quit often does not respond, but for some reason pressing my laptop power key (as if to turn off the computer) helps to get things jump-started.
    In my Activity Monitor, there is a Process called "kass" that is eating up anywhere from 20-30% of my processor. I think that this is connected to some sort of Key Access software that might have been installed on my computer for my college access, but I am not sure. Here are the details from Activity Monitor:

    What I don't understand is why this is flaring up now, since the Key Access has always been there (on OS 10.1, 10.2, and 10.3 as I upgraded sequentially). Perhaps there is some sort of bad interaction with the 10.4.7 upgrade? I'm not really sure, but I was wondering how I would go about eliminating this hang up. It might be the source of so much slowing down on my computer!

    I seem to have solved the problem. The "kass" function was linked to KeyAccess, an app made by Sassafrass. This app was installed on my computer by my University so that I could use certain programs (such as Adobe Photoshop) while on the school network by obtaining a key through the school Internet connection. For some reason this process started to take over my computer once I upgraded to 10.4.7, so I just removed the application from my computer all together. Now the hang-ups in other programs, as well as the IMAP email seem to be back to their old speediness.
    Strange how these things work.

    I keep having issues where I'll get spinning beach ball.  Not sure how to diagnose.  I've noticed it happened today with Chrome today, and display settings yesterday/today.  It's starting to occur often.
