Tiger Installation Problems, Monitor Doesn't Have Picture

*Originally Posted in Tiger Support Discussions but no response.*
Hi every1,
I'm having problems as well trying to install Tiger on my power mac G3. I did the software exchange thing where I got CD's in place of the DVD. During installation,I restart the computer w/ the CD in drive, the computer starts but my monitor doesn't come on.
I've been looking through the discussions and no 1 is having the same problem i'm having. I downloaded the firmware but when I go 2 install it, A message says the firmware is the latest and doesn't need 2 be upgraded. Could it be a problem w/my Viewsonic LCD VE701b Monitor. Do I need 2 upgrade the video card or is there some other problem?
Power Mac G3 350mhz
1gb Ram (PNY Technologies)
Tempo ATA 133 PCI Card
Western Digital80gb hard drive, 4 partitions
currently using Mac OS 9.2.2 on main HD (8gb, 6.40gbs remaining)
Partition I want 2 install Tiger is 23.30gb
Any info will be helpful.
Thanks every1,
Andrea
Pt. 2
Hey every1,
I see U are stumped as well but anyway, I've been doing research and here's what I did.
1. I reset the PRAM, Nothing.
2. I reset the PMU, Still Nothing.
3. Emailed Tech Support at ViewSonic, (Awaiting a response).
Anybody have any other suggestions? Could it be corrupt CD?
Thanks,
Andrea

Take a look at this thread for useful stuff about the Oxford chipset:
http://forums.macosxhints.com/archive/index.php/t-55470.html
Your computer cannot give you USB2, and USB1 is very very slow, useless for tasks like backing up that involve transfers of large chunks of data. With what is built in on a B&W, your only choice is FW.
The Oxford chipset is not the only one that works, but we know it does and those enclosures give you both stability and the ability to boot from the external drive.
p.s. I responded to this earlier this morning. Are posts getting lost?

  • Tiger OS X10.4.2 Installation Problem, nothing on posts have worked

I am using an iBook G4, with a 1.33GHz PowerPC G4 processor, with 256 MB memory. I am currently running Panther OS X 10.3.9 and looking to install Tiger 10.4.2. When I restart the computer and hold c with the Tiger disc in, I continually get the "This cannot be installed on this computer" message. I have tried using the disk utility to verify the disc permissions of the installation disc and I recieve the package error message. After this, I checked to see if my BaseSystem.pkg was in my Receipts folder, and it was. I did not get an option to verify the disk as this button was unclickable, I could only click verify disc permissions. I have also verified the disc permissions and repaired disc on my hard drive. There is not firmware updates needed for my computer.
I have checked all over this forum and have tried everything I have seen suggested. Thanks for any further suggestions!
    iBook   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

What color is the Tiger installer disk? If it is grey, does the label say is it for your iBook or for some other Mac model? Only a black, retail Tiger disk or a grey one for your specific model will reliably install Tiger on your iBook.
To repair your hard drive, or to verify it in 10.3.x, you must start up from another drive that has Disk Utility on it -- you cannot repair the drive you start up from.
If your Tiger disk qualifies as above, you can restart from it by holding down the "c" key during restart, then select Disk Utility from the "Utilities" menu of the Installer (do not run the installer). This should allow you to repair the hard drive.

  • Upgrading to Tiger Installer problems

Ok, thanks in advance for giving a glance, and, Happiest of Holidays.
I did search and still doesn't fit my situation...
Upgrading to Tiger-retail box from OWC. I use an external partinioned 200g firewire drive as a B/U and bootable OS/software tester before installing on the Pismo. The drive has 10G space available on the bootable OS partion.
Start the Tiger DVD installer it begins and after installing Base System part 1 and moving to Running Installer Script the process stalls; doesn't crash - just stops: The FW drive stops blinking and the DVD stops spinning....
OK maybe i overlooked something etc... Have to erase the OS partition; clone 10.3.9 from the pismo to it and start again. This time do all the checks: Run disk utility, Tiger cache cleaner etc... all works well, even boot and work on the drive for a few days. Start the upgrade process again, stalls at the exact same place. I want to run Tiger on the FW drive prior to the Pismo to check it out and i don't relish the thought of having to start from scratch if problems occur installing on the Pismo....
This time i printed the log file which i include below.
I called OWC tech dept. - they said i probably don't have enough disk space for the process... the process told me it only required 3.5G. They didn't offer any further knowledge.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!
    Peace

  • Warning about bizarre eMac Tiger installation problem due to memory

I'm a fairly proficient user. I've upgraded the OS on my 800MHz eMac (original version with NVIDIA GeForce2 MX graphics) many times. This time, while upgrading to Tiger, I blew almost an entire weekend trouble-shooting the machine. I'm posting this so others on the forum can hopefully save themselves some time.
My machine came from the factory with 256MB RAM and a Superdrive. I had the AppleStore add another 256MB of RAM when I bought the machine in Nov 2002. This was Apple-branded RAM, not third-party.
When I tried to upgrade to Tiger, the installation would proceed through all the DVD media and system hard-drive tests, then succesfully install one or more packages. It would then fail with the "Please try to install again" message. The installation log was showing messages about file corruption. I was able to re-install Panther from CD, which eliminated optical drive failure from the list of possible problems.
I ran all of the hard-drive checks in Drive Genius and my drive passed. I ran all of the Apple Hardware Tests from my original system CD. Then I found some warnings on the Apple site about marginal third-party RAM causing this kind of problem. I first rejected this line of approach, since I had Apple RAM.
Eventually I ran out of "normal" trouble-shooting, so I decided to pull the extra memory module as a last resort prior to replacing the hard drive. Once I did this, the installation ran flawlessly using the original 256MB of RAM.
The message here is that EMAC MEMORY PLAYS A MAJOR ROLE IN EITHER DVD I/O OR TIGER-SPECIFIC INSTALLATION. Check your memory before cracking open the rest of the machine, even if all the Apple hardware tests say the memory is OK.
I have new memory on the way from OWC and will follow-up with status when I get some runtime on it.
As an aside, I upgraded to Tiger from Panther mainly to get the increased parental controls (this machine is destined for my kids). Now that I have Tiger, I am pleasantly impressed by the other refinements as well.
    E-Mac   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

The RAM test on the Apple Hardware Test disc is a compromise between being throrough and completing in a reasonable amount of time. Memtest (especially if run in single-user mode as per it's instructions) offers a more throrough test.

  • More Tiger installation problems :(

This sure isn't fun. I got it to install correctly the first time but after erasing the disk thinking that would install OS 9, I can't get it to reinstall. It goes through the process but then keeps saying after a long time "There were problems installing the software" I don't know if the disks I purchased were retail. I got them from We Fix Macs and they are white with black X's. If it is the disks then I will be so mad at We Fix Macs for selling me something that doesn't work! Ok, so there is no OS installed currently so what am I to do? I cannot downgrade unfort. I'm glad posters on here know computers! :)Too bad my apartment maintenance people can't fix computers!

"...no way to move and delete the other one myself to make it less confusing?"
No but the link posted below to the Your Other Topic may help.
As I Posted Here (below BDAqua's image) in Your Other Topic:
The Full Retail Version, of the Tiger Install Disc is a DVD not a CD.
The disc must look exactly like the images in the above links, and not say Upgrade, CPU Drop-in DVD, or "This software is part of a hardware bundle purchase - not to be sold seperately." on it.
'Why would there be other versions of OS X? Is the one I have a bootleg, is that what you are saying?"
    Not necessarily.

  • Tiger Installation Problems: Can't install from disc...continuous restarts

Attempting Tiger install on fairly old iMac (six years) ... the DVD player is caput, so I'm attempting to install with external DVD-ROM (Teac). Upon clicking the install icon, I get a message that asks me to restart to continue the process. Problem is once I restarted, nothing happened and I returned to the beginning. When I tried to restart (as instructed) while pressing the C key...nothing happened. When I tried to restart from the Tiger install disc, it wouldn't allow me to restart. I hit the key and get an error tone. None of the troubleshooting tips seem to apply to this situation. Is it the external drive? Is it my machine? Is it the install DVD 10.4.6? I'm out of ideas ...

There are no guarantees, but following this procedure when installing updates and upgrades on your Mac, or even re-installing them, will go a long way towards avoiding unpleasant after effects and ‘post-update stress disorder’.
It is also worth noting that it is an extreme rarity for updates to cause upsets to your system, as they have all been extensively beta-tested, but they may well reveal pre-existing ones, particularly those of which you may have been unaware. If you are actually aware of any glitches, make sure they are fixed before proceeding further.
So before you do anything else:
If you can, make a full backup first.
Turn off sleep mode for both screen and hard disk.
Disconnect all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
    1. Repair Permissions (in Disk Utility)
    2. Verify the state of your hard disk using Disk Utility. If any faults are reported, restart from your install disk (holding down the C key), go to Disk Utility, and repair your startup disk. Restart again to get back to your startup disk.
At least you can now be reasonably certain that your system does not contain any obvious faults that might cause an update/upgrade to fail.
    3. Download the correct version of the COMBO update from the Apple download site. If your car runs on gasoline you would not want to fill the tank with diesel, so don’t try to install the PPC updater on an Intel Mac!
The 10.4.11 Combo Updater for PPC Macs is here: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosx10411comboupdat eppc.html
And for Intel Macs: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosx10411comboupdat eintel.html
If you prefer to download updates via Software Update in the Apple menu (which would ensure that the correct version for your Mac was being downloaded), it is not recommended to allow SU to install major (or even minor) updates automatically. Set Software Update to just download the updater without immediately installing it. There is always the possibility that the combined download and install (which can be a lengthy process) might be interrupted by a power outage or your cat walking across the keyboard, and an interrupted install will almost certainly cause havoc. Once it is downloaded, you can install at a time that suits you. You should make a backup copy of the updater on a CD in case you ever need a reinstall.
More information on using Software Updater here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1338
Using the Combo updater ensures that all system files changed since the original 10.4.0 are included, and any that may have been missed out or subsequently damaged will be repaired. The Delta updater, although a temptingly smaller download, only takes you from the previous version to the new one, i.e. for example from 10.4.10 to 10.4.11. Software Update will generally download the Delta updater only. The preferable Combo updater needs to be downloaded from Apple's download site.
    Now proceed as follows:
    4. Close all applications.
    5. Unplug all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
    6. Install the update/upgrade. Do not under any circumstances interrupt this procedure. Do not do anything else on your computer while it is installing. Be patient.
    7. When it ask for a restart to complete the installation, click restart. This can take longer than normal, there are probably thousands of files to overwrite and place in the correct location. Do nothing while this is going on.
    8. Once your Mac is awake, repair permissions again, and you should be good to go!
If your Mac seems slightly sluggish or ‘different’, perform a second restart. It can’t hurt and is sometimes efficacious!
    9. Open a few of your most used applications and check that all is OK. In this connection please remember that not all manufacturers of third party applications and plug-ins, add-ons, haxies etc, will have had time to do any necessary rewrites to their software to make them 10.4.10. compliant. Give them a weeks or two while you regularly check their websites for updates. This applies particularly to plug-ins for Safari 3.
N.B. Do not attempt to install two different updates at the same time as each may have different routines and requirements. Follow the above recommendations for each update in turn.
Lastly, Apple's own article on the subject of Software Update may also be useful reading:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106695
If you are updating Safari (or just have):
Input Managers from third parties can do as much harm as good. They use a security loophole to reach right into your applications' code and change that code as the application starts up. If you have installed an OS update and Safari is crashing, the very first thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in your own Library and in the top-level /Library), log out and log back in, and try again.
So, disable all third party add-ons before updating Safari, as they may not have been updated yet for the new version. Add them back one by one. If something goes awry, remove it again and check on the software manufacturer's website for news of an update to match your version of Safari. Remember: Tiger up to 10.4.10 used Safari 2.0.4 or, if you downloaded it, Safari 3.0.3 beta. Safari 10.4.11 used Safari 3.0.4 which was not a beta. If Safari 3.1.1 on 10.4.11 is not the fastest browser you have ever used, then something is wrong!
Moreover, trying to revert to Safari 3.0.4 (or worse still, version 2) when running 10.4.11 or 10.5 can have repercussions, as Safari 3.1.1 uses a completely different webkit on which other applications like iChat, Mail and Dashboard Widgets etc also rely, and may entail you having to reinstall an earlier operating system.
Most errors reported here after an update are due to an unrepaired or undetected inherent fault in the system, and/or a third party ad-on. Two such add-on that have been frequently mentioned here for causing such problems are Piclens and Pithhelmet. If you have them, trash them.
Additional tips on software installation here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106692
To reiterate, Input Managers reach right into an application and alter its code. This puts the behavior of the affected application outside the control and responsibility of its developers: a recipe for problems. That's not to say that issues absolutely will ensue as a result of Input Managers, but you, as a user, must decide. If the functionality of a specific Input Manager or set thereof is really important to you, you may well choose to assume the associated risk.
Again, the advice is to remove all Input Managers from the following directories:
    • /Library/InputManagers
    • ~/Library/InputManagers
especially prior to system updates (they can always be added back one-by-one later).

  • My new Photoshop CS4 doesn't have 'Picture Package'...?

I go to File > automate and Picture Package is not in the pop up menu. I can't access it from Bridge either Tools > Photoshop...Photoshop help says it is still a feature in CS4. What step am I missing? a bug?

What PDF plug-in are you talking about Dave? The picture package plug-in
that was in Photoshop wasn't a PDF plug-in, it didn't generate PDF files. It
took your picture package back in to Photoshop as a regular Photoshop
document, the same with the contact sheet plug-in. The complaint has nothing
to do with a PDF plug-in, it has to do with Adobe fixing it so that the only
output method (like the slideshow in Lightroom) is the very crAAppy PDF
format. They took away functionality just to push their format, now if their
format was appropriate and was what most people were using when the plug-in
was in Photoshop then that is fine, but I can bet you that most people after
using the plug-in in Photoshop didn't save it as PDF all that often. More
likely it was either printed and then trashed or printed and then saved as a
TIF or PSD or JPG. That is my complaint.
As for the crack post, well I would suggest you pull you head out of yours
and at least pretend that you have a clue about what is being said. Equating
my complaint to crack is just stupid.
As for ImageReady we have known for several versions that ImageReady was at
first a lame duck and then a dead one and that become very clear once Adobe
bought Macromedia. Fireworks is a 1000 times the program ImageReady was.

  • Tiger installation problems

I have an 800MHz G4 iBook (1GB RAM, combo-drive) that has been running 10.3.9 for quite some time. I recently decided that wanted to upgrade to 10.4 for some of the added features.
I purchased a set of OEM, iBook G4 10.4 OS install disks and tried to install it. I'm getting an "ALERT This software can't be installed on this computer" right after the language choice page.
    What am I doing wrong?
    Thanks

The discs that ship with a Mac are specific to that Mac and can't be used on other Macs.
You need to buy a retail version of Tiger.

i put the DVD in HD and turned the computer on
i clicked on the 'continue & agree' buttons and the next screen
it says that i needed to have 10.3 in order to install 10.4
    ummmm why?
please help. need to get up and running for work..... DOH!
    thanks to everyone
    G4 dual 450     1gb ram / 80gb hd / 30gb hd

"DOH" is right! "Wiping" your hd before even making a back-up is not the most highly recommended method of proceeding with an upgrade or update! Nevertheless, there you are and you need help, not a sermon...right? So, do you have the disks that came with your computer (or whatever version you have other than the 10.4 disks)? If so, you can re-install whatever version of MacOS you started with. The disks you are attempting to use for the upgrade to 10.4...are they gray by any chance? If so, they are "OEM" versions and will not allow you complete the install on any computer other than the one they shipped with. You need to buy the retail (full) version of 10.4. Then you can either perform an Upgrade or a "clean Install" as you wish.

Nonsense, no problems logging in at sites that you mention. I use OpenDNS servers. For the OP try:
System Preferences>Network>Advanced>DNS. In the left side column click on the + sign and insert the following:
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
Then click OK, then click Apply.

  • Installation problems - Vise software probs + Other problems with 10.4.11

I've posted elsewhere on the forum about this but wanted to try another tack. I have recently hit the automatic update button (having left it a year) when promted and let the Mac go and get the updates - including a firmware update. Then the problems began - Combustion won't open, After effects 7 won't open etc, etc, all the cross over aps wont work (ie the rosetta items). My scanner had continued to work ok until yesterday when it decided not to. I've downloaded the drivers, tried to reload the software and if allways goes to the dialogue box - this software unexpectedly crashed do you wish to report. All the time. Has anybody else had these kinds of problems??? has anyone got any solutions? Are the Vise/installation crashes a feature of 10.4.11? Help....

Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates.
May even need to do an Archive and Install if you have room on the HD...

  • Solution to common Windows 7 Xfi Elite Pro installation problem

Solution to common Windows 7 Xfi Elite Pro installation problems Hello,? I have just solved what I understand to be a common problem when upgrading a machine with an Xfi Elite Pro from XP to 64 bit Windows 7. Apparently the console control software for the "older" PCI Soundblaster cards for Win7 isn't done yet. If you've installed Win 7, updated the product identification module and run the new driver that you can find easily on Creative's support site and you still have no sound, try going to the Control Panel in windows. Switch the display to the "small icons" option and select "sounds".
Choose the "playback" tab. You should find a list of possible sound output devices that exist on your machine. You need to highlight the Xfi on that list and then click the "Set as default" button at the bottom of the screen. That should do it for you.
    It did it for me.

C The 'solution' you provided only touches a very small fraction of the problems with Creative sound cards. Only very unexperienced users may not control which sound card is choosen by their operating system. Many of us work with PCs for decades, being used to modify the registry and so on. The drivers of Creative are of an unexcusable low quality.

  • How do I export HDR photos made on Photoshop CS5 onto a flashdrive so I can use them on a window machine for commercial purposes.  Adobe support claims it is a apple problem not theirs.  PS the other window machine doesn't have Photoshop cs 5 installed?

Hi, How do I export HDR photos made on a macpro with photoshop cs5 onto a flashdrive so they can be imported correctly into a windows machine that doesn't have photoshop installed on it?  Already exported to a HP flashdrive but they do not even show up on a windows machine. Need that capabillity since this is for commercial printing.  My wife's mac laptop only shows 3/4 of the picture the rest is grayed out.  Adobe support claims it is a Apple problem.  Love the finger pointing and hold me blameless atitude on their part.  Told them creating a picture should be like gas that can be used in anybody's car, just not their Adobe equipped ferrari.  Do I need to convert the file struture so it can be read by the window machine? How would I do that ?  Any comments appreciated. Doug

I certainly wouldn't expect to read native PS CS5 files with all features intact and supported on a machine that doesn't have CS5 installed. Try saving the files as flattened (no layers) TIFFs before moving them to the flash drive and trying to open them on the Windoze box.
