Time Capsule Failure

I am taking my iMac for service, replacement of Hard Drive and other things. When I try and back up my iMac I get FAILED message
"Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while copying files to the backup volume."
Can someone give me the low down on Carbon Copy Cloner the free download?
thanks,
BC

I guess the iBrain doesn't know everything.....lol

  • Time Machine/Time Capsule failure to set up

Please help. I cannot get my Time Capsule/Time Machine to work. I have Leopard, and a TimeCapsule connected via ethernet to my BT Home Hub (UK). This connects to my iMac wirelessly. Everytime I try to do my first back up it fails, various messages, such as can't mount disk, can't image disk. I am wracking my brain as to what to do to fix.
    Please assist.
    Thanks

Hi Thanks for the response. In desperation I went and dug out my old Maxtor back up drive. Plugged it in via USB, and Time Machine worked straight away.
Time Machine works fantastically - I am now wondering whether to just plug the Time Capsule into the USB?
Otherwise, it is going back to the shop!
    Thanks again.

  • Selective Time Capsule failure

I have had time capsule working well since March. It is backing up three Macs, a lap top wirelessly, and a mini and Mac Pro via ethernet. About one week ago, it began to fail when the Mac Pro attempted to back up. The mini and lap top continued to work fine. When ever the Pro attempts to back up I get several error messages saying that the hard drive is read only and that it needs to be reformatted. Time capsule appears fine when accessed from the desktop or through the airport utility.
    Help, please

I just bought a new MacBook Pro and TC. I received the same error message re: 'read only' and ended getting the TC replaced. I was told it was defective by our local Apple guys.
    Perhaps your TC has failed?

  • Time Capsule failure, maybe.

Twice in two days my Time Capsule 3T device has failed, giving me a "No DNS" error, and "double NAT" error. Restart did not help. Return to defaults and resetting everything did, but a day later, errors reappeared. Looking at my settings, DNS addresses have disappeared. Suggestions? Cable modem lights appear to indicate it has a signal.

    Hmmm that is really poor..
The double NAT error is interesting.. when the modem fails to pick up an IP via the ISP will will sometimes revert to an internal IP.. that would create the double NAT message.
I think you need to isolate which is the problem.. the ISP or the Cable Modem or the TC.
So the first step would be using a computer directly to the cable modem.. or a different router.. you can simply bridge the TC and keep it for backups. But off load its router duties.
Depending on the results.. ie if nothing goes wrong with the TC out, Then the TC is the issue.. but it may not be faulty as such.. just unsuitable..
I would do a full factory reset of the TC.. ie hold in reset and then power on.. keep holding reset for about 10sec until the front led flashes.
You must use the v5 utility.
If you are on lion still http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
When you setup the WAN, reduce the WAN port speed to 100mbit.. that might help to keep things working.

  • Can anyone recommend an external storage device to supplement my mac book air?  I already have a time capsule but want the new device to replicate the data on that so ideally would like a device that i can connect to the time capsule through a cable.

Can anyone recommend an external storage device to supplement my mac book air?  I already have a time capsule but want the new device to replicate the data on that so ideally would like a device that i can connect to the time capsule through a cable.

    Hi CJR
I'm not sure how Time Capsule can be replicated onto your external drive but there is a USB port on the back of TC that can be hooked up to any recent external drive.
Another thing to think about , besides a Time Capsule failure, is the theft of your Time Capsule, so it might be a good idea to consider separating any redundant back-up from your Time Capsule or both my be stolen.
TC will back up until full and then begin deleting the oldest back-ups.  Mine is a 2TB Time capsule.
My back-up plan is as follows:
    1.  Macbook Air back-up on Time Capsule though Time Machine backs up everything - I think it's about every 30 min or so.
    2.  Contacts, reminders, appointments, notes, email are backed up through iCloud.
    3.  iTunes and non-itunes purchased music is on iMatch (and no need to back-up) and any non-iTunes music is backed up on an HP external drive (in case Time Capsule dies)
    4.  Photos are on my MacBook Air and are backed up on my HP external drive.
    5.  Office documents (Excel, Powerpoint, Access etc) are stored in a Skydrive app (like iCloud) and Skydrive syncs these docuemnts with the MS  cloud and my old PC and does not alter their native format like storing in iCloud would do.

  • Time Capsule vs Lacie Wireless Space vs ?

    Hi folks,
I'm a new proud owner of a 11.6" Macbook Air. I'd like to migrate to it fully from my 17" Macbook Pro, but to do so, I'd like to migrate my music to a NAS, ideally one that could also perform Time Machine backups. I have a wifi-only setup at home right now, with an airport express plugged into my cable modem, and I'd like to stay wifi-only (I rent, and want to run no wires). So either a Time Capsule or the new Lacie Wireless Space (http://www.lacie.com/us/products/product.htm?pid=11565) look to be the perfect options for me. I'd love to go with a Time Capsule, but the reported reliability issues scare me away from them.
    So, my questions-
    1) Has Apple improved the Time Capsule enough to where it can get a confident buy?
    2) Does anyone have experience with the Lacie NAS options to recommend them?
    3) Any other ideas?
This is a real head-scratcher for me, and I'd appreciate some input.
    Thanks!
    sam

I too am exploring the options of Space vs Time Capsule.
Just read "LaCie's unit is mostly limited by its dependence on single-band 802.11n instead of the Time Capsule's dual-band wireless support."
    Read more: http://www.electronista.com/articles/10/09/16/lacie.wireless.space.merges.router .and.nas/#ixzz171BUKjy0
Also: "It’s compatible with UPnP/DLNA and iTunes, and you can stream music, movies and photos from a central location and play them on any device.
Moreover, the Wireless Space is Time Machine compatible, so Mac users can use it as a target for their automatic backups and be confident that all important files and media are safely protected."
    http://www.techdaring.com/2010/09/18/lacie-wireless-space-takes-on-time-capsule- doubles-as-nas-and-wlan-router/
Regarding failures, I read about the Time Capsule failures and experienced Lacie failures (I've replaced three power supplies on my Lacie d2s, and we just had to send back for a Lacie replacement of my son's d2, less than a year old. So reliability is an issue sometimes no matter where you go. Get a good warranty. Lacie makes such solid products (and backs up there products; one power supply was out of warranty) that I've stuck with them (and my wondering has cost me; I have an Iomega Ultramax that won't wake up sometimes when it goes to sleep, though my Iomega portable eGo has been flawless).
We tried an Airport Extreme a year ago and it just works out of the box; practically no setup. But I have an Airport Express that just up and died after about 2.5 years.
I'd say they were comparably priced for what they each offer, with Apple a bit of a premium overall, and probably a bit more of a premium product to go with the price.
I'm torn. I'd save cash and go with the Lacie, but seeing I plan to use it as a portable NAS and the Time Capsule has a built in power supply it would be easier to carry.
    Decisions, decisions.

  • Time Capsule Shuts Down or Powers Down During or After Backup

Just started backing up my wife's MBP (Leopard) to our Time Capsule via Time Machine. Previously the Time Capsule had only been used as an Airport, and had never shut down by itself. Now, inexplicably, the Time Capsule powers itself down. If I stop backing up to it, it stays on. If I run Time Capsule, it powers down. Powers up again fine - unplug, wait 10 seconds, and it cycles to a green light. Then a few hours later, Time Capsule is discovered powered down. Its not the cats, not the dog - it seems to be whenever Time Machine runs.
Checked the firmware on the Time Capsule and upgraded it to the most current. Made no difference.
    What is going on?

So this just started happening to my Gen 1 500GB Time Capsule as well. I came across these articles:
    http://www.macgasm.net/2010/07/12/time-capsule-recalled/
    http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/blog/2010/jul/13/apple-time-capsule-failure -analysis
The second one claims that the shutdown is due to an "overheating fault in some of the electronics around the power supply." I am going to check the serial number on mine to see if it falls in the range for a recall-replacement (since I am way out of warranty).
Even if yours isn't in the recall range, is it possible it's damaged from prior overheating?

  • Time Capsule hard drive failure

    Hello, all
I have a 500 GB Time Capsule that is about four years old. I use it to back up my MacBook Air and I also use it for file storage. Recently the HD has become erratic, in that it appears on Finder under Shared sometimes but not always. The wireless router part is still working fine. I can usually get the HD to reappear but it disappears again eventually. I can get it back by unplugging and replugging the TC, but I tried a hard reset and that didn't bring it back. I have backed up all the files I had stored on there as advised by the Apple Store Genius (see next paragraph).
I took it to the Apple Store and the Genius said that he thinks it is failing. He was not able to see the TC/HD wirelessly but was able to access it by plugging in a cable. He expressed surprise that my TC has lasted four years!!! He said I should replace it.
I then went to the online Apple Store and read the TC reviews, which contained quite a few reviews that report HD failure (mostly power failure, if I'm not mistaken) after 18 months or so! Some suggested that a good solution would be to get an Airport Extreme plus a USB hard drive of some other brand, not Apple. Many of these report power failure, which is not my problem. I still have power; apparently hard drive failure.
This sounded like a good idea, so today I went to London Drugs in Vancouver (an Apple retailer) and the salesman there (should be fairly unbiased) thought I should get a new TC rather than the two-piece solution just because it was simpler. He also said that in fact there about three HD manufacturers who produce all hard drives and that any one would have about the same frequency of failure, Apple include because they don't manufacture their own.
So I'm ready to replace my old TC with the new one I bought, but I'd like to get any suggestions the community might have. I can see the advantage of the TC because it's an all-in-one. I haven't opened it yet, so I'll await your well-informed input.
    Thanks so much!

I think the TC is a much better buy.. If only for this reason.. the USB hard disk on the AEBS is dog slow.. whereas the TC internal drive is at least same as standard single disk NAS.. overall for what you get the price of a 2TB TC vs the 2TB USB disk plus AEBS is about right.. the 3TB TC is much poorer value.
    Read the review.
    http://www.anandtech.com/show/4577/airport-extreme-5th-gen-and-time-capsule-4th- gen-review-faster-wifi-/4
It is fairly well done, but not everything is correct.. the stuff about the fan turning on is wrong.. it has the same issue as the old one. That is overheating, no ventilation and the fan does not turn on, has no outside vent anyway.
But look at the internal vs usb speed of hdd.. that should convince you of the value of the TC.. if you are using anything but wireless.
BTW the issue with the Gen 1 is still more likely to be the power supply.. The original 500GB hard disk was a Seagate Server ES drive.. the only server standard drive in the whole TC series although it was always promoted as having server standard drives..
IMHO a repair of the power supply would get it up and running again. Very extermely unlikely that drive will die in such a manner.. even if it was to go bad they  tend to stay bad.. not come on again when you power cycle.. but power supplies sure do.
I have repaired dozens of them.. haven't ever come across a dead 500GB drive yet.. seen a few 1TB, both WD and noisy hitachi.. but even so not that many..
Lots and zillions of dead power supplies though.
    https://sites.google.com/site/lapastenague/a-deconstruction-of-routers-and-modem s/apple-time-capsule-repair
At least you can pull open the TC and remove the hard disk and wipe it.
Interesting the Apple guys are surprised at the 4year life span.. obviously intended for you to buy a new one much sooner than that.

  • Symptom preceding my Time Capsule Power On Failure: Apple TV2 Glitches

Hope this helps someone. I spent days re-installing the system on my my Mac Mini and re-updating my Apple TV 2 firmware in an attempt to solve the problem with my AppleTV2 and Mac Mini losing connection with each other, before the Power On Failure of my Time Capsule identified the problem was elsewhere.
For a month preceding my Time Capsule Power On failure (see below), my wirelessly-attached Apple TV Gen2 would stop in mid-stream while playing a playlist from my wirelessly-attached Mac Mini. Nothing short of quitting & restarting iTunes on the Mac Mini would re-establish a connection.
But when my Time Capsule failed and I was forced to substitute an old AirportExpress b/g base station, all the problems with the AppleTV2 losing connection to the Mac Mini disappeared!
It seems that prior to my Time Capsule failing completely FAILING it was exhibiting MINOR glitches in its wireless operation. These glitches were NOT sufficient to drop the Mac Mini or AppleTV2 from the Internet, but they were apparently enough to interfere with Bonjour networking between the two devices.
    BACKGROUND
My single radio, 1TB Time Capsule failed Wednesday night, pretty much textbook as per the 1100+ replies on this thread: Time Capsule Powered Off, Won't Power Back On: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2129872
My particular "Time Capsule Power On" failure symptoms:
    - Time Capsule WiFi network disappeared
    - Time Capsule the indicator light was OFF (rather than normal green, or even a flashing yellow)
    - Power cycling Time Capsule initially would result in yellow light for 10-20 seconds then nothing
    - With hand on the Time Capsule case I could feel the internal hard-drive spinning
    - Within 1/2 hour, repeated power-cycling would result in the light NEVER coming on
    - Serial no. as per http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3351 Time Capsule: Does not power on
The local Apple store Genius bar replaced my Time Capsule with a brown box 1TB, single radio unit, but would NOT transfer my data on my old Time Capsule. When I asked for assurance that my data would be erased, they said that it was Apple policy that all returned drives are destroyed. It was accept that unwritten promise or leave with my broken Time Capsule. I was NOT happy, but life is already too short – I accepted the replacement Time Capsule.

Contact a repairer in your area.. we can fix them cheaper than data recovery.. and you will get a working TC back as good as new.. in fact we can make it better than new because we can fix the fundamental flaw .. no cooling.

  • Time Capsule connection failure

My Airport Time Capsule has a "Connection failure" message in my finder. The actual device flahes orange, it has been doing this for a while but it hasn't been a problem until now. I've always been able to connect through it to WiFi and backup wirelessly. Now My wifi is connected but I can't back up my time machine. I'm not sure how to "reset" it, and it doesn't seem to have any other problem when I looked at the diagnostics. The "Connect As" doesn't work either as it says I need to check my network connection.
    Thanks for the help

    Reboot the TC alone..
No luck reboot the whole network.. restart in correct order.
Modem.. TC.. wait 2min for each.
    Clients.
No luck.. are you on Mavericks.. we will need to detail a whole full network reset to factory and overhaul.
To do that we need full network info. Models and versions of everything.

  • Time capsule backup failure after moving and changing internet access

I bought a 1GB time capsule to backup my MacBook Pro using time machine and also archived files so I would have these when I had to move across country to work temporarily. The time capsule was working fine in my home after the original backup through an ATT DSL, but I then moved across country and set up a Comcast cable DSL and now Time machine records under Backing up: Preparing and the latest backup records failure. Is there a way of fixing this without erasing the entire Time Capsule and then taking 2-3 days of backing up again and will I have access to these when I return to my original home with the capsule and MacBook Pro. I have tried resetting all the backup modes and options.

    Linda,
According to the logs, you are going to need to initiate a backup, and then let it do it's thing uninterrupted, perhaps all day of over night. Time Machine needs to do a "deep traversal". See this article.
*_Time Machine May Report "Preparing..." For a Long Time_*
First, it’s good to determine WHY Time Machine is "Preparing..." for an extended period of time. Examining the Console logs during this event can reveal what is actually going on behind the scenes. It may be “Preparing…” for a genuinely good reason. How long is 'too long' to wait for Time Machine to finish "Preparing..."? Some times, "Preparing..." is required to perform the normal housekeeping that Time Machine does periodically. Other times, it really is "stuck" and never proceeds after many hours.
*”Deep Traversal” (Recent Crash / Forced Restart / System Update / Extended Period Between Backups)*
According to the following KB article it can sometimes take quite a long time if Time Machine begins a “deep traversal” and has to compare data inventories. This may apply to your situation, particularly if many Gigs of data are involved. [http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1516]
You see, Time Machine *+does not+* ordinarily perform file-by-file comparisons to determine what has changed and thus determine what needs to be backed up. Rather, Time Machine relies on FSEvents notifications. This is a log that the system uses to keep track of changes to directories. Rather than scan tens of thousands of files for changes each time, Time Machine simply looks at this log and narrows its’ scan to only the directories that have experienced changes since the last backup. Otherwise, Time Machine would have to be running constantly just to catch every change on its own and thus eat up precious CPU.
Every event that FSEvents records has its’ own ID which includes a time stamp. At the end of every backup, Time Machine stores the last event ID that it processes. When the next backup is initiated, Time Machine looks at this stored ID and determines that it only needs to backup events that have occurred after the time stamp on this last event ID.
If, due to a system crash, power failure, forced restart, or some other major system event, Time Machine cannot find this last event ID in the system logs then it will consider the FSEvents log “untrustable” and it will go into what’s called “deep traversal”. The Console logs may report +“Event store UUIDs don't match”.+ In this event, Time Machine will by-pass the system log entirely and perform its’ own file-by-file comparison to determine what has changed since its’ last backup. Obviously, if tens or hundreds of Gigs are involved, then this process can take quite some time and should be allowed to proceed.
Additionally, it appears that if Time Machine has to go back too far to find the last event ID, then it will give up and simply go into “deep traversal” and do the file-by-file scan on its’ own. This can occur if Time Machine has not been able to perform its’ hourly backups for some time, as is the case for users who only backup once a week or so. This is also the case with major Mac OS system updates that change thousands of files at one time. There are simply too many events logged by the system for Time Machine to bother looking for the last known event ID.
    Cheers!

  • Time Capsule and power failure

The power went out for about 10 seconds during the night. In the morning, all of my machines presented an AirPort Utility window telling me that I had 2 problems: no DNS server (which it said had been resolved), and double NAT. It advised me to switch to bridge mode. I know for a fact that my setup does not have a double NAT problem and that I do not require bridge mode. However, it was early in the morning and I had only had one sip of coffee, so I foolishly went ahead and clicked Continue.
AirPort Utility then took me through a whole bunch of apparently recommended changes, all of which I applied. When I was done, I found that I had turned off the Time Capsule base station's wireless capability, and I had changed the attached disk's security from accounts to password -- and I could no longer access my Time Machine backups.
Fortunately, I'm excessively cautious about keeping records of my settings, and I was able to get everything back to normal after I woke up. I can once again access my Time Machine backups.
But the average user would likely have found this experience completely baffling, and would have lost access to the backups. I'm going to file a bug with Apple suggesting that they improve the user experience in the event of a power failure. As it is now, the dialogs unrealistically expect the user to have a complete understanding (and memory) of the technical details of AirPort utility. My recommendation to users: if you ever encounter this situation, just Quit AirPort Utility and get on with your life.

Double NAT means you are having a router and your Time Capsule both running in gateway mode. Only one can be in gateway mode and the other must be in bridged mode. I would try doing a hard reset and then go from there.

  • Time Capsule not backing up - but not getting any messages of failure

Hello, I have had my Time Capsule installed successfully for about 5 months. Two weeks ago, it apparently stopped backing up. I was regularly seeing the hard drive icon appear on my desktop and the spinning icon in the top right hand menu bar, so I was assuming all was well. But recently something else cause me to open time machine to look for a file to restore and I found that Time Capsule hadn't backed anything up recently!
I received no messages, got no failure notices - nothing!
Now, when the icon appears, I have checked on the status and right now it says "Indexing backup." I don't know what stage it stops, because the icon just quietly disappears.
    What should I do?

A clue may be lurking in your logs. See #A1 in [Time Machine - troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum), for a handy widget that will display the backup messages from your logs.
If that shows errors, see #C2 there.
If it doesn't, but shows very small amounts of data copied, see #D5 there.

  • Time Capsule power supply failures

Has the chronic Time Capsule power supply failure after about 18 months use been fixed in the new Time Capsules being sold today?  I had a 500GB Time Capsule I recently had to scrap because of this.

It is always possible there is another fault.. to shut down after a minute.. if you are relating that correctly.. is unusual.. I would power the board from 5v 2A supply.. that will quickly show if the issue is your power supply or not.
The TC is definitely in need of more cooling but I would hate to suggest doing a major modification until it runs out of warranty. It is possible to improve the existing cooling with a bit of smarts.. a laptop (or netbook size) cooler to which you can seal the TC.. this is the tricky bit.. you need to allow a space underneath though.. perhaps 10mm.. and seal just the edge of the TC so it allows the cooler to draw air through the TC. That will work without modifying it. But you will need to make up a proper spacer and gasket.
I see pictures of various fans mounted on the top.. they are next to useless. Cooling the outside plastic will achieve only the tiniest improvement in heat transfer due to the thick plastic (insulating) top.. if it was made out of metal maybe it would do something.
Sounds like what is also needed is a different heat sensor that would start the fan at a lower temperature.
It is not the sensor that is the issue. The TC includes a proper fan controller. It is simply set too high.. and so it doesn't turn on.
If you want to break into the TC.. you can solder in a console.. and use serial to USB adapter.. these are very cheap.. the soldering in is tricky.

  • Time Capsule Power failure (2nd Gen)

    Hi
Looks like power failure is a common and un-publicised feature of this part of the apple range. I have a 1TB model which is nearly three years old, so does anyone have any tips on how to fix this? Is it easier to buy new (once bitten...?)

The Time Capsule can be repaired.  Check the link on the left side of this document originally posted by forum expert LaPastenague (who repairs Time Capsules as well) for some servicers who can help.
This way, you get to keep your backups and the power supply will be better than original. If you replace the Time Capsule, you lose your backups.
