Time Capsule Internet not working through direct ethernet in Apartment

Hi all,
I got my new time capsule yesterday and tried to set it up. The internet in my apartment is supplied to the apartment complex so we access it through an ethernet port directly (there is no modem). Can the time capsule share this connection wirelessly by connecting directly to the ethernet port in the wall?
I tested yesterday but it wouldn't work. The light was green on the TC and it seemed to think it had a net connection (didn't prompt connection error and it also showed IP address plus DNS servers). The problem is, it doesn't work... I try on my macbook and no internet connection can be made. From the TC menu i also try to update firmware but it tells me it cannot connect.
Any ideas? Should i manually apply a new firmware to see if it will help?
Many thanks!

The Time Capsule defaults to sharing one IP address with several computers, which is what you usually need when you connect to a cable or dsl modem. It sounds like your apartment complex is supplying this as well as a dhcp server as well. This could be a problem with double NAT. You should set your Time Capsule to work in bridge mode instead and see if that works.

  • My Time Capsule will not work through Time Machine but need to back up because my hard drive is corrupt. I hard-wired it to my MacBook Pro and have been dragging files to capsule in finder window. Will I have problems since it's flashing yellow constantly

My Time Capsule is constantly flashing yellow and it will not preform periodic back-ups. When I tell it to from the icon on the top task bar, it freezes MacBook...every time. I am now dragging files from internal HD to TC found in Finder after hardwiring it to laptop treating it as an external HD.  Can in trust it to store files and photos as my MacBook is telling me to back-up because my internal HD is corrupt and may need replacing?
    Thanks in advance.

A PC can have more issues connecting than a Mac.
But it really should not matter.. so just try it in situ.. press and hold the reset.. once it starts up, it will return to default IP, 10.0.1.1 the PC should then be able to find it via the airport utility.
If not drag it over to the Mac and plug in there by ethernet.. or since it is a laptop, really should not be that difficult to drag the Laptop and plug it into the TC.
Important thing is to get access to the TC.
The Mac if it is running lion, then you MUST download and install 5.6 airport utility to do anything useful.

  • My Time Capsule does not work with existing WiFi

Following a question solved on March 24 by LaPastenague, but gone bad again.
    Apple AirPort Time Capsule
I felt the need for a physical backup of my data, as I would not completely trust the different clouds. I use, and have used Dropbox for 4-5 years and are very satisfied with that, but I am still not sure if or when a political lunatic will shut off the internet.
I purchased the Apple AP Time Capsule 2T, because all my other stuff are Apple, and that it's wireless. My old backup is Maxtor 300 GB.
Since we stay 2-3 weeks on two locations, one in Norway and one in Sweden (two different countries) we must use Mobile Broadband 4G, cables or fibre connections are useless for us, and we don't have it up to the houses. I have one mini router for each country, we bring with us iPhones, iPads, iMac, Apple TV, APExpress. When we pass the boarder I change the mini router, and the system continues working perfect on the WiFi, except the APExpress that needs to be reconfigured,  but then it works.
The APTC was difficult to make working as it would not accept to be in an existing network, but with good help from the Apple Community, LaPastenague, with forcing the TC connect to the APE with Ethernet cable in bridge mode, ref "My Time Capsule does not work with existing WiFi" from March 24, the problem was solved and all gadgets worked together in a perfect harmony, until we changed location.
Now, as I have my second WiFi network, and the APExspress is reconfigured, it's like the TC thinks, I am the base boss here, I am not taking orders from APE one more time, and it simply does not work, not only that, it fluctuates all the time.
I have a slight feeling that the two WiFi bands are making the trouble as during the configuration of the TC sometime the last figure 6 and 7 pops up, and that has something two do with the two different 2,4 and 5 GHZ bands
So, I am curious if you have any idea ?
I am thinking of returning the TC if I don't make it work now, but how do I delete all the data that's on it?

I can deal with the last question first and easily.
I am thinking of returning the TC if I don't make it work now, but how do I delete all the data that's on it?
Open the airport utility .. go to the disk tab and select erase.
When you select erase you will get mulitiple options.
Quick removes the file table but does not delete the files,, it takes 2min or less.
A Zero out data is the secure way,, by writing 0 ie low level drive format.
    It can take several hours..
7 pass will take a week.. not recommended..
35 pass erase is ridiculous.. it would take a month.. put an ax through the TC. It is quick and better.
Now, as I have my second WiFi network, and the APExspress is reconfigured, it's like the TC thinks, I am the base boss here, I am not taking orders from APE one more time, and it simply does not work, not only that, it fluctuates all the time.
The fact that it did work and has now failed might point to faulty unit.
The only way to tell is reset it properly to factory and start over.
Universal Factory Reset.. any model TC or AE.
Unplug your TC/AE from power or turn off at the power point.
Hold in reset. and power the TC/AE back on..  all without releasing reset and keep holding in for about 10sec. (this is often difficult without a 2nd person or a 3rd arm).
Release it when the status light flashes rapidly. If it doesn’t flash rapidly you have missed it and try again.
    Note..
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC/AE will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations of the router.
No files are deleted on the hard disk in a TC.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
Generally having multiple wireless AP should not cause problems.. but it is better to set channels manually.. so it doesn't go beserk rotating channels.
Remember to keep all names short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
Sadly though the Apple routers have no logging now and no SNMP and almost nothing to help diagnose a problem, so if it continues .. take it back to apple.. they have given you no other method of fixing it.

  • Time Capsule backup not working anymore after upgrade to Snow Leopard

    Hi,
after I upgraded to Snow Leopard I started the backup process with the time capsule. Within several days I tried this about 5 times and the iMac crashed or froze after some time doing the backup - but it never completed.
I then deleted the whole content of the time capsule and started a fresh backup. Now I receive a message after some gigabyte that there was a problem and I should try it again. Again the backup has not finished so far. I tried to reduce the amount of files to backup by excluding folders - no chance. Since the upgrade to snow I was not able to complete one single backup.
    Any ideas or similar experience?

I have had a similar problem. I have the latest 1TB Time Capsule and backup worked fine in Leopard. I am backing up over my home wireless network. The backup starts, but at some point it freezes with the spinning pizza wheel if I click on anything. Everything freezes with no possibility of force quitting any application.
I tried trashing the plist for Time Machine, but that didn't work. Tonight I'm going to try a backup with the computer connected to the Time Capsule by Ethernet.
I can access my existing Time Machine backups on the Time Capsule.
This is a frustrating situation. But for this, SL works great, but this problem is a critical one.

  • HT3728 since Oct 25 my time capsule is not working properly. I enter the time machine to check my backups and the only thing I see is balck screen on every single day since I put it to work on my house. Any ideas on what's going on?

I am having problems with my time capsule.
It's not backing up... if I enter the time machine, all I see is a black page, any day I look, since the day I bought it.
Was not like this before Oct 25...
Any ideas on what's going on and what should I do to make it work again?

Check the USB cable first to make sure that it is operating correctly on another connection.
You may need to use a powered USB hub with the drive since the USB port on the Time Capsule is not a high powered port like you have on your Mac.
You may need to use the powered hub even if the hard drive has its own external power supply.

  • Time Capsule does not work and i can not not mount it anymore, even after follow all apples instructions at FAQs

My Time Capsule suddenly stopped working, and i can not even mount it anymore. When i ask for a backup, the time machine keeps looking for a disk with no success.
I tried all the FAQs suggestions:
    1) I change the name of the disk using Airport Utility;
    2) I updated it using Airport Utility.
Now i can not even try to erase the disk because after to update it, the disk in not listed anymore.
Now i can just read a "internal disk needs repair" message. that wasn't there before, having in mind that the first response was "there is no space at the disk for a backup".
    What can i do?

    The TC has a fault..
Power it down and let it cool off overnight. Power it on again the next morning and check if it works.. no luck factory reset.. do all the tests quickly as you have 10-20min before the Temp rises to kill it again.
No luck it is dead.. give us the actual model number.. A1xxx from the base.
How old is it?? Beyond 3years they do become dodgy.

  • HT4628 MacMini internet not working through wifi

I moved my Mac mini server (running snow leopard server) to another location, and I tried to connect to Internet through the wifi.
I have other devices connected to internet through my time capsule (MacBook, iPhone, iPad).
My Mac mini is well connected to the time capsule (I can exchange files between my Mac mini & MacBook).
So I don't understand why I cannot connect to the Internet from my Mac mini??? It used to be connected through Ethernet.
Thanks for your help, it's driving me crazy !!!

I have been around the forums.
Is this related to 10.6.8?  I have tried all th fix i have seen, but not working.
Should upgrading to mountain lion solve it?
    Thanks

  • Time Capsule setup not working. Network much stricter than normal networks.

I recently purchased a Time Capsule and am trying to set it up under a very tightly controlled network that my dorms use. We are offered internet access through an ethernet port in the wall or through wireless. The internet here is restricted to the point where we must input our individual student passwords in order to access the internet. Also, in the initial setup, a client security agent had to be installed just to be able to gain access to websites.
My ideal for the Time Capsule would be to use its USB port for wireless access to my printer, use its base station ability to better the weak connection I get from my room, and to use it for Time Machine for my Macbook Pro.
My initial attempt to set up the Time Capsule used my laptop's connection on the wireless network and the wired ethernet connection of the Time Capsule. Once the Time Capsule established its connection, my laptop could no longer access the internet. The Security Client Agent Registration/download page for our dorms came up. It wasn't until I reset the Time Capsule did I regain my internet connection on my laptop. This made me believe that only one device could use my individual password at one time.
Time Capsule is probably very easy to setup but these network conditions are making it much more difficult. This has caused problems for connecting my iPod Touch as well.
How should I go about setting up the Time Capsule in order to gain the ideal as closely as possible?
Thanks for any help that anyone can offer.

sounds like a DNS problem to me..
Try to ping a server by his name instead of its IP.
If, for e.g. you can ping www.apple.com with success, DNS will not be the reason.
Otherwise, if DNS is the reason, this could be just a temporary fault.
Maybe the DNS server of your ISP went down or the DNS server (more or less a DNS cache) in your BT Business Router have a problem.
Try to restart the BT while the TC is powered down. After restart, power on the TC and reconnect your Mac to the WiFi.

  • IPhone + Time Capsule wifi not working

My iPhone 3G works perfectly on public wifi, but when I try to connect to my Time Capsule, it connects, but when I go to Safari, it say's that it is not connected to the internet.
My TC's wifi works perfectly with my MacBook, but not with my iPhone.
Both the TC's, and iPhone's firmware is the latest version.
Please do not post ******** responses like reset the TC or go to forget this network or reset network settings. THIS DOES NOT WORK!
I have read somewhere, however, that the IP address shown on the iPhone should not be 169.xxx.xxx.xx ... it is. I've tried changing it using the static ip, but that doesn't work.
Please tell me step by step very clearly how to make this work. I don't mind reconfiguring the whole network if I have to. Thank you.

    Hello Reno,
It's a little difficult to help you without more detail on your existing network configuration.
It's strange that your Macbook works but your iPhone doesn't. I suspect the problem may be down to how the TC is configured into your network but can't be sure with the information you posted.
My set up works fine and it may help you to understand what I did. My set up is exactly as depicted on page 36 of this manual: http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/DesigningAirPort_Networks10.5-Windows.pdf.
I have a DSL modem/wireless router provided by my ISP. It acts as the DHCP and DNS servers for my network. I connected my TC to this other router via Ethernet cable and configured the TC as a simple bridge. In this setup the TC is just there to provide a fast wireless network for my Apple devices that support it. I connect all other boxes to the b/g wireless network coming from the ISP router.
All I did was follow the manual configuration instructions in the document above and it worked.
I hope that is of some help to you.
    Regards
    Ian

  • Restore from Time Capsule slow not working properly help!

I bought my time capsule about two weeks ago. I have backups from most of those days on my time capsule. Since then I had to clear my hard drive and re-install my operating system. I did not think this was a big issue since i had the backups on my time capsule. However, whenever I try to do anything with a restore it is EXTREMELY SLOW. I only once got it to where it said it would restore, and I had and estimated time of over 15 days. That is just not even reasonable. I have tried restoring from several sources: restore from backup (after booting from disk), migration assistant, time machine. They all are very very slow and I only have about 100gb that was backed up. Does anyone have any tips on how to get this working. I have spend over 6 hours on tech support. I am connect via ethernet cable and I just do not understand why this is so slow.

  • Internet not working through Apple applications, but ok in firefox?

I'm having trouble with my internet connection through Apple software on my computer. It started a few days ago, I don't think any changes have been made to my network.
Basically if I try to connect to the internet in Safari, Mail, iTunes, Dashboard or anything else that's an Apple program, it doesn't work at all. It spends a huge amount of time "Loading..." and sometimes will eventually come up with the information but usually times out.
However, if I use Firefox - which I had luckily installed on my computer - all pages and everything load instantly.
I connect to the internet through an Airport which we bought three months ago. The Airport connects to a modem which connects to the line.
What is wrong and how do I fix it?? I much prefer using Safari and I'm dying because I can't get into the iTunes store!!

    Hi and welcome to Discussions,
Firefox is one of the few applications that maintain their own 'Proxy'-settings and do not use the general 'Proxy'-settings of OSX like all the other apps you mentioned to not work.
Check the Proxy-settings of Firefox against the general OSX ones.
    Hope it helps

  • Time capsule is not working!!!! help me!!!

Ok my time capsule is showing an amber light and will not connect to internet i've had it for 6 months and it was working now it will not.
ok so I know my internet is working because i have a hard line on one computer and that one is connected. I've been told to open airport utilities and the network then to switch IP address, subnet mask, Router and DNS server. So I switched utilities info with network info and it did not work(has worked in the past). I really don't know what to do Im not very tech smart so please help me!! school starts soon and i need my network up.
oh and I've talked to my internet providers they are unhelpful, they say the internet is working so its not their problem..and i understand that but a little help would be nice...oh and I have talked to a friend who works for apple and she could not help so please help!!...lol thanks

Under Internet Connection in the Airport Utility, what have you got for Configure IPv4?
Have you tried Renew DHCP Lease?

  • ATT hooked up new u-verse router, now time capsule does not work and airport utility does not see it ?

ATT hooked up the new U-verse router replacing the older 2wire router. Old 2wire router worked fine with Airport +Time Capsule. Now only the amber light flashes. When I try to reconnect with Time Machine it does not find the Time Capsule nor does the airport utility find the Time Capsule. Any help?

Okay, the 3801HGV also doesn't bridge - but there is a workaround. Info on the workaround comes from 'SomeJoe7777' at this link:
    http://forums.att.com/t5/Residential-Gateway/U-verse-for-BUSINESS-2Wire-3600HGV- bridge-mode-or-another-AT-amp/td-p/2707013
As for connecting to your TC: the 3801HGV uses a default IP address of 192.168.1.254. It passes out IP addresses to your networked devices, and all of those IP addresses will be 192.168.1.something. The TC uses a default IP address of 10.0.1.1. As your primary router, if the TC's defaults weren't changed, the TC would be handing out addresses to your networked devices that are 10.0.1.something.
If your computer has an IP address of 192.168.1.something, it won't be able to see the TC if the TC's address is 10.0.1.1 (or anything else that's not 192.168.1.something). Hopefully that makes sense!
Go into System Preferences on your Mac, and click the Network icon. Click on Ethernet on the left side, and you'll be able to see what IP address your Mac has been given. My guess is that it has a 192.168.1.something address from the 3801HGV.
If I'm right about the 192.168.1.x address, and that your TC is running with 10.0.1.x addresses, then that's why your Mac can't see your TC. In this case, you need to change the Mac's Ethernet setup to manually set your Mac to a 10.0.1.x address for the TC to see. To do this, go to System Preferences, then Network, then click Ethernet on the left side.
Set the Configure IPv4 dropdown to 'Manually', and it will open up some places for you to fill in information:
IP Address: 10.0.1.15 (or a similar number that won't conflict with your TC's address, but starts with 10.0.1)
    Subnet Mask: put in 255.255.255.0
Router: 10.0.1.1 (I'm assuming here that your TC was running with the default IP address; if it was something different, then set Router to whatever IP address your TC was using.)
Then, click the Apply button to make your changes active.
Now, since your Mac's IP address will be in the right "subnet" for your TC, they should be able to see each other. (It's kind of like having to live on the same block as someone to be able to talk with them. In general, if your computers don't have similar addresses, they can't talk to each other. Of course that's simplified greatly, but you probably get the idea...)
Once you've got the IP addresses matched up, you should be able to see your TC. At that point, you can update the TC to work with the 3801HGV. I recommend setting it to bridge mode, but if you can follow SomeJoe7777's advice, go for it!

  • Internet not working through home AEBS

My wife and daughter have recently started sharing my old iBook as their second machine when mobile. It worked for me for a few years through the AEBS (when at home), and has worked the same way since I reformatted etc for them.
But all this has changed since my daughter took it to university a few days ago, and successfully logged on to a wireless network there. Ever since then the machine cannot access the internet through the home AEBS.
    We've tried:
    • endless restarts of the iBook
    • several restarts of the AEBS
    • repaired permissions
    • various combinations of DNS server & search domain in the TCP/IP settings
    • hooking the iBook up to ethernet --> worked perfectly
    • running my macbook through the AEBS wirelessly --> also worked perfectly
The iBook knows it's on the home wireless network -- it gets an IP from the AEBS as expected, and I can tinker with the AEBS settings in AirPort Utility using the iBook in wireless mode. And SysPrefs > Network says the computer has an internet connection.
    But:
    • no internet services work (everything just times out and says there's no connection)
    • also a time out if I type the AEBS's IP address into my browser
Our other machines (macbook, eMac, G4 macmini & a PC) are all functioning on the network (via ethernet) as normal.
My daughter hasn't saved any settings for the university network; so our home wireless network is still the only network listed in the Airport settings.
I've run out of ideas. Can anyone shed any light ... ? Thanks.

Thanks for the tip. But sadly, no that didn't make a difference. I can't remember which computer created the AEBS network. It was most probably the iBook, though with a different computer name (before I reformatted etc for the new users).
Meantime I've also tried a few more things to no avail ...
    • installed and ran Applejack
    • tried out the G4 macmini wirelessly --> worked perfectly
    • repaired permissions several times
What I can add is that my daughter's account does have some new stuff in its settings since joining the other network. There's now a 802.1X thingy in Internet Connect. I know zip about 802.1X ... If I click on that it shows a configuration name, network port (set to AirPort), a username & p/w. And then curiously it gives the wireless network name as the name of our home AEBS wireless network, with no other names in the menu. I imagine this is all academic, since the configuration's status is "idle". And in any case the 802.1X configuration doesn't appear when logged in with my wife's account - and the internet doesn't work there either. But being both desperate and ignorant I thought I may as well mention it.
Only other thought ... Could adding the 802.1X config have done something to the computer's hidden network/ security settings that would now make it incompatible with some of the security settings on the AEBS ... ? (Should I post to a different forum?)
