Time Machine issues....1st time user (not of macs but of time machine)
In preparation for a new laptop I tried to back up with Time Machine for the first time. It gets 30gb into the 90gb I need backed up and then I get an error message.
Is there a way to find out which files are causing Time Machine to shut down?

When a backup occurs, the "backupd" process will write to the system.log file (viewable in Console). Typically when an error occurs, the error will also be displayed inside the log file. Knowing when (time) it fails is helpful as the entries in the log are timestamped.
The Time Machine Backup Buddy widget is also a good a tool to try installing and then verifying what's happening there. It'll make deciphering the backupd process a bit easier than using Console.

Setting PC Time and Date as a User, not administrator
Good Day,
I'm trying to set the system time and date as a user. Currently running a hardware time server keeping the clocks on the network at the same time. The time is requested from the time sync server at the start of a DAQ run. This is to ensure every computer recording data has the same start time. We are currently changing network permissions and need to make a user run the software. User privelidges don't allow us to change the system time. Is there a way to allow a User to change the system time, or is that left to the Administrator only?
This function is already implimented on the administrator account and works successfully. Any information would be most appreciated.

If the system is (made) a member of a Window administrative domain then all this is already in the box, and should be part of a well managed system (I have managed it on a workgroup as well, see the articles below for details). It's one of the things I try to promote as we often have systems switched on for hundreds / thousands of hours and knowing when some guy accidently switched it all off is realy usefull It helps with problems / events that occur outside our control and assists tracking down problems and stops drift / skewing of data.

The time service is included on Windows XP as well. For NT4 there is / was a toolkit that allows operation from Microsoft.
Use the command NET TIME /? (on W2K and XP)
Either way you will come accross problems at the firewall if you want to get to an external time source. Unless you have on of those nifty little black boxes that pick up a radio signal from one of the available time sources.

I have a new mac, but every time I try to transfer purchases from my iphone to it, it says it is not authorized. But it IS!~ And it uses a very old default email. I then authorize it, it tells me it is authorized already. I tried unauthorizing and re-authorizing. I have looked up help and done what it says. I tried finding users/shared/sc info but that file is not on this Mac. My Mac is fully updated.
please help.I should add that it's an HP photosmart 4280.I found it online and it shows the Mac 0SX operating system.

My circa 2007 iMac freezes up, and rainbow wheel appears when this happens. I know the computer is starting to get old but I can't afford a new one at this time and would love to continue using my Mac, but it's frustrating. Most of the time I ONLY have 1 thing open at a time, and keep my tabs down to a minimum. I bought this to do film editing on but with it acting like this I cannot do that. I know I need a ram upgrade (currently running 2 gb) and my OS is old, 10.5.8, but I think even with it being a bit outdated it should run better than this. Would a fresh install or OS upgrade resolve this? Or any other suggestions to keep this clunker chugging along for a little while longer?
How full is the hard drive?
Do you run any virus software or hard drive "cleaner" software like MacKeeper?
If your model is from 2007 you can install up to 6 GBs of RAM.
2 GBs is the barest of minimum RAM for OS X to run on.
Especially if doing video work. You simply do not have sufficient RAM.
Also OS X 10.5.8 Leopard support ended around 2009.
You could update to OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, at least.
It is available on disc from the Apple store for U.S. $19.99.
I Would seriously upgrade your iMac's RAM to the max. 6 GBs before doing this.
Reliable Mac RAM can be purchase from online Mac RAM source Crucial memory or OWC ( also known as macsales). -
Anyone any advice on how to stop my mail "activity" from continuously caching? is this a problem? I have had inbox issues recently that are not resolved yet but I am not sure if they are related.
Quit Mail. Force quit if necessary.
Back up all data. That means you know you can restore the Mail database, no matter what happens.
Triple-click the line below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar. Paste into the box that opens (command-V), then press return.
A Finder window will open with a file selected. Move the selected file to the Desktop, leaving the window open. Other files in the folder may have names that begin with "Envelope Index". Move those files, if any, to the Trash.
Log out and log back in. Relaunch Mail. It should prompt you to re-import your messages. You may get a warning that the index is corrupt and that Mail has to quit. Click OK.
Test. If Mail now works as expected, you can delete the file you moved to the Desktop. Otherwise, post your results. -
I cannot get my ipod touch or iphone to be recognized by Itunes on my mac mini. Only when i download itunes each time afresh, will it show up the first time. Then these devices will not be recognized subsequently. Is it because i am not uninstalling itunes before I download it? Surely this is a basic thing, ie that my devices need to recognize each other?

User not logged in but MDSImporterWorker is running... should I be worried?
As the title says, I occassionally have a few users that are not logged in, but MDSImporterWorker is doing it's thing. It seems persistent on a single account, but when I remove the account, it jumps to another account. I've reset passwords (strong passwords), but still going.
Is this normal? Should I be worried?

Apparently, my iphone received "water damage" as indicated by the indicators after a visit to the genius bar. I just blew out the bottom of my iphone with air and over time the problem just went away. There's no way water touched the ports though so it seems the water damage indicator is a bit too sensitive.
Basically, if it the dock connector on your iphone gets wet/steamy/dirty then it can start acting up. Clean it like jagamac said and see if the problem goes away. If it doesn't, I would suggest trying a different charger. If the problem persists (using a geniune apple charger), then it's probably best to visit the genius bar. -

Lucky you. Torrent sites are a notorious source of malware. Stay away from them.

User not showing after restoring from time machine backup
I was having issues with my 2009 Macbook pro. took it to the Genius Bar. Diagnosistics all showed ok. (I had done troubleshooting before I had the appointment). They suggested wipe and reinstalll from my time machine backup. I agreed.
Returned home to do the reinstall. When I went to log in found that one of my user accounts did not show in the log in - only my main and "guest" accounts. On checking the "users" folder the user is present. It also does not show in the system preferences user screen but when I try to recreate it says it exists. Note I have done this wipe and reinstall with Mavericks

As I understand it here are the steps the Genius did. Attempt to create the account (system preferences->users) with the same information. It will say it already exists. Very carefully read the options. One will say use the existing account. BE CAREFUL because one option will wipe your data.
If you need to do this it might be worth the trip to the Genius Bar as you could wipe your data. One precaution I took was to bring a full copy of that user account onto my desktop (from the backup immediately before the wipe) in addition to the one in the user folder. Once we verified that the account was working I moved the desktop copy to the trash and again verified the account (just to be safe).

How to use time machine to migrate a user from one mac to another
I have a brand new iMac that was set up about a week ago which contains information from my old PC. I did a time machine back up and now I am trying to import that user to my new macbook air.
Using Migration Assistant, I imported from the user from the Time Machine backup (iMac) to the Macbook Air using my external hard drive.
When I restarted the computer, all that came up on the Macbook Air was the test account I created, not the user from the other Mac. The data is on the computer because the space on the hard drive was taken up. I just don't know why the user isn't showing up.

Make sure. You have an extra account, and the one you migrated may not be recognized as the same one as on the old Mac. The error you are experiencing is caused by the icm/conn_timeout parameter being exceeded. You should increase this parameter to solve your issue. Also there are a number of other parameters that will cause the webdispatcher and ICM to close a connection.

My iphone seems to not want to turn on the screen stays black no matter what you do pressing the home and power button....and at times while it is on it locks up and cannot navigate and call out like the touch screen is in active you have to shut the phone down to get it to work as intended.

When you copy information via edit > copy, command + c, edit > cut, or command +x, you place the information on the clipboard. When you paste information, edit > paste or command + v, you copy information from the clipboard to your data file.
If you edit > cut or command + x and you do not paste the information and you quite Word, you could be loosing information. Microsoft is very worried about this. When you quite Word, Microsoft checks if there is information on the clipboard & if so, Microsoft puts out this message.
You should be saving your work more than once a day. I'd save every 5 minutes. command + s does a save.

I'm having timeline playback issues on one user on an iMac but not on another
Ok, I'm stumped. The iMacs we have here at the high school are set up through active directory and on the Admin account, premiere performs fantastic. On the student accounts however, it has this weird playback issue where it will play for about a second and then stop. You can keep pushing play but it keeps stopping. The app doesn't crash but playback is really bad.
