Time Machine Questions, starting to plan for NAS

After a recent episode of serious data loss, I'm moving to a 2TB NAS solution for my 5-Mac home network. We are only using Time Machine on one system now.
My question is, does the destination disk for a Time Machine backup need to be exactly the same size as the home HD? That is, if you have a 300 GB directory to back up that lives on a 750 GB hard drive, does the TM destination need to be 750 GB exactly? Can it be larger? Can it be smaller (as long as there's enough space for the backup)?
Can multiple Macs using TM back up to a single large disk or disk array? That is, can each Mac on a network use TM to create separate backups on a single network drive?

several things.
1. TM backups to NAS drives are not officially supported. the only exception is a Time capsule. It also works with drives connected to an Airport Extreme base station. there are hacks for other NAS drives but you use them at your own risk.

2. TM backups do not use compression. also, TM needs extra space to operate so the backup drive should be at least 20% bigger than the total amount of data you are backing up. otherwise the backup will fail. Further, because TM stores incremental backups you actually need a lot more free space than that. generally, the backup drive should be at least 2 times bigger than the total amount of data you are backing up. If you can't provide that, don't use TM, use some other backup tool.
3. Multiple MACs can use the same network drive for backups. each mac will create a separate sparse bundle. But you do need to make sure that you have plenty of free space on the drive to fit all those backups.

  • Carbon Clone and Time Machine: developing a backup plan

    Howdy all!
    This is a second post that sort of flows on from another I have written today

    I initally put them all together, but they were too rambling and disconnected, so it seemed better to seperate them. The question I have here is how best to organise my backup plan? I have a few ideas, but, basically, want to make sure I get the whole setup right the first time and would appreciate any advice from others that have been down the path before. As I am still waiting for some parts to arrive in the mail, I have a little time to think about how to go about setting up my Mac.
    Basically the setup is:
    Mac Mini 2012, boot drive is a Samsung 256GB 830 series SSD, seconday drive for data is a 1TB mechanical disk. I plan on having all my data on the seconday mechanical disk (photos, movies, music etc) and only the OS and Applications on the SSD. To this end, I understand I only have to move /Users to the mechanical disk to achieve this. I then also have 2x 2TB Western Digital MyBook Essential USB 3 disks for Time Machine backups. I plan on rotating them on a weekly basis (storing the disk not in use in a safe or offsite), and then, depending on costs a cloud backup service for some data (music, photos etc) which I might want to access when im not at home.
    So I have been thinking for a few days now on the benefit of having a Carbon Clone bootable recovery drive. The thinking goes along these lines. As my data is on a seperate drive, and is backed up to Time Machine, in the event of an OS disk failure, I can replace the disk and then point /Users to the new drive, and I can be up and running once I have reinstalled the apps i need. Now, I understand the idea of the Carbon Clone backup is such that it speeds up the time to rebuild the OS disk, but I have to question, how useful is this in reality?
    Consider, I can sit down now and write down all the apps I have needed in the past, install Mac OS, set it up (possibly with a generic admin password), install the apps I need from the App store and DVDs etc and then take a Carbon Clone at this point before any setup of Apps are done. If the apps configuration is backed up in the Time Machine backup (i.e.: the config files exist under /Users) then this is almost workable - in a recovery situation, the CC clone is used to rebuild the OS drive, the config files are pulled from the TM backups, and we're back up and running. Where this fails, is if I have installed (or removed) apps since the CC clone was made. At this point then, is it best to (a) make a new clone when a new app is added/removed or (b) make a note of apps added/removed, which will then have to be reinstalled if a recovery is required. I tend to think the (b) method is best here, as it preserves the integrity of the clone. If the machine has been compromised (malware etc) then remaking the clone, causes the clone to be compromised and hence the reinstalled machine as well. Though this method could be a pain if the machine state has changed somewhat over time. Also, it means that the reinstalled system will be missing updates etc which could be time consuming to apply anyway, so the usefulness of a clone is slightly reduced anyway.
    Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Some days I think having a clone will be useful esp. as most of my software was delivered on CD (Adobe Creative Suite, Office) or are large install bases (XCode), but other days I think, "its not a mission critical machine", i can survive a day without it while I rebuild the install, and so I dont achieve much by having a clone which is likely out-of-date by the time I go to use it.
    Also, in this backup plan, is it best to rely on TM for things like email backup or a dedicated mail backup utility? can a Carbon Clone exist on the same disk as Time Machine uses, or do I need to invest in a new disk or two for the CC clones?
    As I say, I want to make sure I have this machine setup right from the start, and would really appreciate any pointers, tips or advice.

    There is one big advantage of a clone.  You can immediately reboot
    to it and continue working and deal with the regular boot drive faiure,
    what ever it may be, later.  Especially since all your data and such
    is on another drive.  If you use your computer for work and time
    critical projects, this is a major plus!
    In the case of a hard drive failure/replacement, copying the clone
    to the drive is the fastest way to get the system and all your settings
    back.
    Time Machine and incremental backups have a place as well.  It is best
    suited for "incremental" problems.  Examples are installing an upgrade to
    software that doesn't work or just don't plain like.  With Time Machine it
    is easy to just restore back to the point before the install.
    Something else I do is backup current project files to USB memory sticks.
    If you are using your computer for business, you can never have too many
    backups.  Coralllary 456 of Murphy's Law is the "number of backups that
    you need will be one more than what you have!"

  • Leopard Server Time Machine Questions

    We've been running Time Machine to backup client data for about 20 users for a number of months. We've set this up with Time Machine saving to a 750GB RAID 1 external drive mounted as a share point. Each user has a maximum disk quota on the share point (set up using 'edquota'). We now have some questions about how Time Machine is supposed to work:
    1) We're starting to get errors that Time Machine has run out of space for individual users. We understood that Time Machine would simply delete the oldest backups and then continue (as it does with standard Time Machine on an individual Mac) but this doesn't seem to happen. Instead we get a warning that there isn't enough space. Is this correct for Server-based Time Machine or is there something we can/should do to make Time Machine behave 'normally' and auto-delete oldest backups to make space for new backups?
    2) We've used 'edquota', 'quotacheck' and 'repquota' commands to create our user quotas on a share point. However we can't find any way of removing an individual user's quota completely - it seems we can change their quota but we can't remove them and start again without removing the user completely from the server. Is there any way of resetting and/or removing a user's disk quota on a share point, including clearing down all their data? For example, we have one user that has 3GB of 10GB quota 'in use' even when all their data has been removed manually. There are no hidden folders/files etc. but 'quotacheck says they are still using 3GB!
    3) We have an HP Ultrium 960 LTO-3 SCSI tape drive. Does anyone know how we can backup our Time Machine data onto these tapes for off-site archives? We've looked at EMC Retrospect 8.1 but this doesn't seem to work properly with Time Machine data (and seems to be generally flakey!). Does anyone know of general OS X/Unix drivers for this type of device that would allow us to use Unix commands ('tar' etc.). Alternatively can anyone recommend a backup software solution that actually works with Time Machine data?
    4) Can anyone recommend a known working solution to keeping long term archives of Time Machine data?

    We only backup selected client data, excluding system, apps, music, photos etc. i.e. only company data not personal data or general system data (our client systems are built from a common standard build brick). So 10GB-25GB is fine for many months of Time Machine backups for our user population.
    We like Time Machine because the user doesn't have to do anything for backing up, it works automatically and the user can recover their 'oops' files without tech support help. So we're keen to get the benefits of Time Machine for several months of immediate backups that users can deal with themselves, but also we'd like some kind of longer term off-site archive capability - this is why we'd like to tape the Time Machine data.
    We don't have a working tape solution at present. We have an old Retrospect 6 licence which explicitly does nothing (but complain!) with Time Machine data. We tried a trial licence of Retrospect 8.1 but it seems flakey in general and did not cope reliably with Time Machine data. We wondered about Bru but we'd have to remove Retrospect 6 (which we're keeping in case we need to recover from old archive tapes).
    Currently our server is backed up using a combination of techniques:
    1) Time Machine of the server itself (system and data)
    2) Time Machine of the company data share point onto an external 750GB RAID 1 drive (2 active disks mirrored + 1 spare disk)
    3) Weekly 'breaking' of RAID 1 mirror using a spare drive (i.e. weekly rotation of mirror drive)
    4) Weekly clones of server system material (but not data) onto FireWire external drive
    5) Monthly clone of RAID 1 onto another external FireWire drive (we intend to rotate this with another identical drive)
    Can you confirm the situation regarding Time Machine when it runs out of space - how do we get it to 'roll over' old backup data?

  • Time Machine Drive Starts Up Every Time I Try And Open A Word File

    I had this problem when I first got Leopard and now that I've upgraded to 10.6 I'm having it again. Whenever I open word and then look for a file the Time Machine drive starts to whir and I have to wait an eternity to start looking for files on my Mac, not the Time Machine drive. I can't find a setting in Word to shut off the search feature and I have Time Machine shut off from Spotlight so I can't figure out the problem. And it's not exclusive to Word. It's all programs where I have to search for a particular file, iMovie, iWeb, Final Draft, etc. Help!

    try rebuilding launch services database. run the following command in terminal
    /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
    see if that helps.

  • Time machine will not backup to Synology NAS DiskStation.

    I own a MacBook Pro8.2 (15-inch, Late 2011) running on Mac OS X 10.7.5. Time Machine backups go to a Synology NAS DiskStation, which works fine with my wife's MacBook Pro (17-inch, Late 2011) also running on Mac OX X 10.7.5. If I try to backup the 15-inch MacBook Pro, I can get started but down the road I get the following message: "The backup was not performed because an error occurred while copying files to the backup dish". Try several times again but it always fails again. Does anybody have a good suggestion how to solve the problem? I am puzzled.

    Most likely, the backups are corrupted.  Try to Repair them, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

  • HT4889 Migration assistant doesn't see my 3TB Time machine it just keeps looking for other computers

    I just did a clean install of Mountain Lion on my iMac and Migration Assistant doesn't seem to see my 3TB Time Machine.  It continuously looks for other computers, and nothing else.  I know the files work because I loaded it on my other MBP and it sees them just fine?  am I just inpatient or is something wrong?

    This happened to me after hard drive replacement under the Seagate Drive Recall at the local Apple Store. Here's what I learned from the process:
    I Wagged the Mac home, fired it up (with naked OS installed at the Apple Store), and it wouldn't see my Time Machine drive with Setup Assistant - not on firewire 800 nor USB. Just a grey spinner that lasts forever. When I try just continuing anyway, it offers me something that looks plausible, but then puts up a dialog about duplicate user name, and no matter what I enter, it always says "that user already exists". So I think - maybe Migration Assistant. Complete the setup, create an account, watch the nice welcome movie. BAM - there's my Time Machine drive on the desktop. OK - it has to work . . . but no. Same behavior in Migration Assistant, plus the new OS offers to start making backups on my Time Machine disk - it's not recognizing it at all.
    So - back to the Apple Store - let the genius figure it out. It turns out there are multiple problems. First, the "genius" who imaged my new machine picked 10.7.2 but my machine had 10.7.5 - turns out, it's not enough just to have right cat. Even a point release older OS may not recognize a newer Time Machine drive. The guy at the desk said "We have images of everything but the 10.7.2 has free iLife in it, so they like to use that one". What the heck? They don't image what you had originally as a matter of sane process?
    Having figured that out, we re-image 10.7.5 at the store thinking we've fixed it. But no - Setup Assistant still won't see the Time Machine drive. Not on USB, not on Firewire. Not in a box, not with a fox.
    So here's the second trick - newer machines have a recovery partion. see: http://www.apple.com/osx/recovery/  Boot with the option key held down, pick that partition, then you'll get a "system restore" option, to restore your whole system from a Time Machine backup. My drive was recognized by the recovery partition restore process when neither Setup nor Migration Assistant would. Obviously, there's something broken in Setup/Migration Assistant.
    Takeaway:
    - if you're getting a drive replaced by Apple, make sure they image *exactly* the same OS
    - if Setup Assistant fails, use the recovery partition for system restore
    - Use Recovery Disk Assistant http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1433 NOW to make yourself a recovery thumb drive just in case. With Apple's new "no media" approach to the OS, you're hosed without it.

    I have this doubt. I've just bought an external drive, especifically a Seagate GoFlex Desk 3 tb.
    I want to know if it is recomendable to make a partion exclusively for time machine and let another one so I can put there music, photos, videos, etc that I should need to use or copy to another computer.
    May half and half, 1.5 tb for time machine and 1.5 tb for data.
    I have an internal hard drive of 500 GB (499.25 GB) in my macbook pro.

    As I said, yes. Be sure your Time Machine partition has at least 1 TB for backups.
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to two (2). Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.

  • Can I use Time Machine as a backup drive for my Vista 32 PC?

    I cannot see any of my Mac computers or Time Machine on my network through my Vista PC, even though I have a wireless card in the PC which can connect wirelessly. I have my PC sitting next to my Time Machine that is the hub for my network. I am connected to the internet via ethernet connection daisy chained through my Time Machine which is connected to my cable router.
    I cannot figure out why my PC cannot "see" my Imac, emac, Time Machine, and macbook that are all connected to my wireless network. The PC and Time machine are the only devices with an ethernet wired connection.
    I would like to use the Time Machine's 1 terabyte drive to back-up my Vista PC.

    I would first set up my mac and vista to do simple file sharing and then work my way from there. If you are unable to figure out simple fire sharing i would go look on other forums or advice. Its rather simple to do but it can also cause a lot of headaches. I have wanted to connect my mac and windows server to my network for a while and just recently figured it out.

    If the time machine backup was made from your Mac with 10.7.x install on it yes toy can boot from it. Connect the backup drive to the Mac and power it on. Hold down the Option key and a boot menu screen willl come up. Select the backup drive, it might be label Recovery HD or Whatever you called the drive when you formatted it.
    Once that loads, which is a copy of the built ion Recovery HD files you can use disk utility to do maintance and do all the other things you can do with disk utility and then you can restore your system from that backup.

    It usually means you are running Mavericks but have an earlier version of iPhoto. Open the App Store and upgrade your version of iPhoto to the Mavericks version.

  • Use TC as temporary AEBSn Until Time Machine is Set Up & ready for B/U?

    I want to set up TC by itself with iMac and MBPro and use the same as AEBSn until I set up Time machine on each computer. I have Leopard on both, but with extended first backup times that I have been reading about I want to have TC ready to go but set up time machine up on each computer and do the backups at convenient times when no one will be using the computers, such as overnight.

    That's essentially what I want to do. I'm just wondering if the TC can just operate as a AEBSn until I turn Time Machine on on each computer for the first time. Normally, I would connect all of the devices I intend to connect and get TC working and then turn Time Machines on when I am ready.

    New MacBook Retina Pro 15.4 inch with 2.2 Ghz and running Yosemite 10.10.2 will not recognize LaCie Quadra H2 disk. Also will not complete Time Machine Backup onto My Passport for Mac which it does recognize. Plenty of disc space both externals.

    If you choose to use garbage such as "Intego VirusBarrier" you are going to need more memory, a lot more. I suggest you uninstall it according to its instructions, and evaluate your Mac's performance without burdening it with completely useless junk. As long as Intego remains active, your Mac will have few resources remaining to do anything else.
    Using Intego's "Virus Barrier" and "Net Barrier" products on a brand new Mac containing nothing but one minimally configured user account resulted in performance degradation so severe that it became nearly unusable. No knowledgeable Mac user would consider using it even remotely tolerable.
    Intego should only be uninstalled using the uninstaller included with it. Don't use anything else. A successful uninstallation will result in the following:
    After that, restart your Mac. Other Intego components will remain but they will be inert and will not affect your Mac's operation.
