Time Machine requiring more space than necessary?

Hi all,
Since I only have a 60gb external drive (whereas my laptop has 250gb) I burned some files to DVDs and then excluded them from the Time Machine backup so the backup would fit in 60gb (~56gb, really).
Anyways, when I managed to reduce the size of my backup to around 51gb, I got a message saying that the backup would require 64.7gb. I thought it was okay, maybe TM needs a bit more space for whatever reason. But even after shrinking by backup to only 41gb, it still says 64.7gb are needed!
I'm desperate because I haven't been able to find a solution and thus I've been unable to backup my files.
Thanks in advance

Thanks for your replies, but I am perfectly aware of how TM works and that I need a bigger hard disk to back up.
A friend also has a computer with a 250 HDD and he backs up perfectly around 50gb of files in a 60gb hard disk.
I've formatted my disk and I'm doing this as my first backup, so I know there are no 'extra files' to be backed up besides those I've chosen not to exclude.
But my question is why does TM require exactly the same disk space (64.6GB) with different backup sizes (from 35GB to 53GB), it's ALWAYS the same space!
I really appreciate your replies, though. =)

  • Time machine need more space than necessary.

    Hi.
Can anyone help. I have a two 1TB external hard drives one backs the other up. Until now it has been fine but suddenly time machine has decided theres not enough room even though there the same size drives. Ive deleted the backup drive and the time machine preferences but it still wont work. I have one drive with 930GB on and time machine says it needs 1.1TB of space. Why dose it need an extra 170GB. Help?
    Thanks

Since Time Machine keeps copies of previous versions of things you've changed or deleted, it needs much more space than the data it's backing-up.
The extra 170 GB is for "padding" -- workspace on the backup volume, and in case the original estimate isn't accurate, or more files are changed or added while the backup is running.
#1 in the link Carolyn supplied explains this a bit more, and recomends that your backup drive be 2-3 times the size of the data it's backing-up.

  • Time Machine sees more data than actually exists

Another way to put it is that Time Machine requires more space than is needed. I found similar posts, but none that were solved.
My MacPro has a 160GB startup drive, and three 1TB (931.2GB formatted) storage drives in it.
I have a 1TB external FW800 drive (931.2GB formatted). I formatted it using Disk Utility and set it as the Time Machine destination. Using the Time Machine preference pane in System Preferences, I have exluded everything but the startup disk and the 1TB drive with my actual work data on it (we'll call it data_1) .
There's 79GB in use on the startup disk and 702GB in use on data_1. In the "Options" window of the Time Machine preference pane, it says "Total Included 781.9GB"
When I start the first backup, after a short period of 'Preparing' Time Machine delivers an error message that says the backup is too large for the destination and that 931GB are available but 998.41GB are required.
    From system.log:
Jan 7 00:42:23 /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd(598): Backup content size: 79.2 GB excluded items size: 8.8 MB for volume davinci

Jan 7 00:42:23 /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd(598): Error: backup disk is full - all 0 possible backups were removed, but space is still needed.
Jan 7 00:42:23 /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd(598): Backup Failed: unable to free 998.41 GB needed space
Jan 7 00:42:29 /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd(598): Backup failed with error: Not enough available disk space on the target volume.
Where is the extra 217GB coming from?
I've reset everything; reformatted the drive, turned TM off, cleared the exclusion list, turned TM back on, reset the TM destination, repopulated the exclusion list. Same error.
Time Machine has worked properly on this computer before. I had a smaller external drive, and only backed up the startup disk.

    1) I can't find any documentation published by Apple that defines recommended drive size. Perhaps I'm not looking hard enough.
My G5 is in the shop, so I can't get to Leopard Help. And I don't find it on their Support pages. This has been reported by people who talked directly with Apple (Apple Care and others).
    2) I've run Time Machine on dozens of Macs (I manage a small network) and none of them had a TM drive 3 times the size of the source disk. They all worked, no problems.
Yes, of course, in many, perhaps most, cases 2 times or even less will work. But it depends almost entirely on what size files are updated/added and how often.
    3) Based on the error I'm currently getting, TM requires an overhead of 22% just to perform its tasks. Can that be true? And if it is, why isn't this reflected in System Preferences? (i.e.: Total Included: 781GB, an additional 217GB will be required for working space)
Yes, there is a great deal of mystery about it's calculations. You may note from it's system log messages that it requests a certain amount of space "including padding". Just what that consists of, and how it's calculated, is unclear.
My completely uneducated guess is, at least some of it is for the many hundreds of thousands of alias-type files it uses. Remember, when you look in the TM interface, it appears to have one copy of every file for every backup. The vast majority of those, of course, haven't changed, and are represented, somehow, by those special alias files some also call soft links. Whatever they are, they have to take up some small amount of space, but multiply teeny by a minimum of half a million of them per backup . . .
    4) I understand that a main feature of TM is that it saves a history of files. But at it's root it is a backup system. Even if you only had enough space for one most recent copy, and one expired copy, you'd still have a backup, which does not defeat the purpose.
Yes of course, but you don't have anywhere near that much space.
I don't mean to be argumentative. But I was hoping to hear something other than "Get a bigger drive." If the 2-3x 'rule of thumb' is correct, wouldn't the minimum size for any of the newer macs be 750GB? Making one of Apple's own products (the 500GB Time Capsule) be incompatible? Especially when the TC is meant for multiple systems. Seems like my only option is to get a raid of some sort.
Or use CarbonCopyCloner, SuperDuper, or the like. Or exclude a lot.
I suppose I'm just frustrated and befuddled at the lack of documentation on this, assuming what you say is true? I guess I'd calm down if I could see some actual documentation. Does anyone have a resource or a reference where this overhead?
Agreed. Why don't you contact Apple directly? And post the results here.

  • Layout taking more space than necessary...

Hi folks...my applet has two panels inside it arranged in a flowlayout. The first panel is a 5 row x 1 col gridlayout, and the second is working fine. The problem with the first one is that that it is taking more space than necessary and going out the bottom of the applet. Now if I do this in appletviewer, resizing the window by a few pixels will make it relayout the panel and everything looks fine, but of course you can't ask people to do that =) What's the problem here? I've tried validating both the applet and the problem panel, and tried invalidating it first. Any ideas? thanks!

Here is the first half of it...it has all the relevant info. I took out the validate stuff 'cause it wasn't helping.

  • Time Machine requests more storage than needed!

    Starting standard backup
    Backing up to: /Volumes/TM_Backup/Backups.backupdb
No pre-backup thinning needed: 1.94 GB requested (including padding), 109.41 GB available
Copied 2539 files (265.1 MB) from volume Snow_Leopard.
Copied 2547 files (265.1 MB) from volume Leopard.
Copied 2754 files (548.8 MB) from volume Data.
No pre-backup thinning needed: 1.29 GB requested (including padding), 108.86 GB available
Copied 382 files (103 bytes) from volume Snow_Leopard.
Copied 390 files (196 bytes) from volume Leopard.
Copied 435 files (196 bytes) from volume Data.
    Starting post-backup thinning
No post-back up thinning needed: no expired backups exist
    Backup completed successfully.
As you can see from the log entries above, Time Machine requested 1.94 GB, but it backed up only 548.8 MB.
And then it requested 1.29 GB and it backed up only 196 bytes.
I recall reading in this forum that this may be caused by the size information in some folder being wrong. I have partitioned my internal hard drive in three partitions:
    1. Leopard
    2. Snow Leopard
    3. Data
So, I excluded the Leopard partition and did another backup and it was still more than 1 GB.
I added Leopard and took a backup.
Then I excluded Snow Leopard and did another backup and the space requested was still more than 1 GB.
So I added Snow Leopard and took a backup.
Then I excluded Data and did another backup. It requested more than 1 GB.
So, I was unable to identify which volume had the bad folder info.
I wiped out the Time Machine backup by reformatting the volume,
I then re-created the directory of all three volumes using Disk Warrior.
And then I ran a fresh backup.
And then I ran another backup. It still requests more than 1 GB than needed.
    Any else I should try?
    Thank you very much.

That's more of an over-estimate than usual. TM adds 20% to the estimated size of the backup, and it's usually fairly close.
no it's not. I frequently see large disparity between estimated and actual backup for smaller backups. in the example I posted the ratio is 5:1! this is completely normal. there is nothing to troubleshoot or see here.
There are some things that will cause the estimate to be off significantly, but most of them result in larger backups, not smaller ones.
It's pure speculation, but I suspect if the same file is updated repeatedly between backups, it's size may be counted more than once for the estimate.
But as you mentioned, something corrupted might be a cause, also. Since there's no way to tell how much was estimated from each partition, I'd run +*Verify Disk+* on the partition you're running from, and +*Repair Disk+* on the others, then do a Restart.

  • Firevault: "Your homefolder is using more space than required"

I would like to ask for some help. After every log-out, Firevault tells me that "Your homefolder is using more space than required" (or something between that lines). What can I do?
    Thank you for the help.

    Hi Morales,
Unless you have a need for military-level security, FileVault is overkill. It slows your computer because all sorts of cache and preference files are repeatedly encrypted and decrypted, and because filevault is saving all your files in a big "container file," disk and directory errors that would otherwise be minor can cause massive data loss on a filevault-ed computer.
To keep SOME files secure, an encrypted, password protected disk image is a better idea. You can make encrypted disk images with Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility. Do File > New > Disk Image from Folder.

  • Time machine requirements

how much disk space does time machine need? i never got anything close to an answer on this. i did get my question answered about whether or not you can just create a new partition on the same hard drive for time machine. now all i need to know is how large to make that partition.

No one can tell you how much space Time Machine requires because it depends on the initial amount of data that needs to be backed up and how much data changes on an hourly basis on your machine.
A good rule of thumb might be that your backup volume should be at least 2X as large as the total amount of data you initially want to backup. If you have a lot of large files that are constantly changing (for example, you are editing videos) you will want more than that. If you only change a small percentage of your data each day (for example, you primarily use the computer for word processing and web browsing) then less might suffice.
When Time Machine runs out of space it will begin deleting older backups so the more space you have available the longer backup history you will be able to maintain.
Note, that if the partition you are creating for backups is on the same drive as the data being backed up then you risk a hard drive failure destroying both your original data and your backed up copies. That is why Apple advises using a separate drive for backups.

  • "Manually manage music and videos" takes up more space than syncing?

    Hello all,
I fear that I am just stupid and unseeing an obvious answer to this query, but ask I shall, because it is frustrating me to no end.
I recently downloaded a few audiobooks from my local library to listen to on my iPod Touch; the app in question requires that you "manually manage music and videos" rather than syncing. Fine.
I switch over to iTunes, check the box, and now my music--without changing anything, mind--is now taking up an additional 1.8 (or more) gigs on my iPod. I toggle the option to "manually manage" on and off, and with it "on", my music takes up more space than with it "off", even though it's the same music, same podcasts.
Can someone please explain to me why syncing manually takes up more space than syncing automatically and where the extra gigs are coming from? There's not that much audio on my iPod--1.52 gb of music, 1.97 gb of podcasts and .69 gb of apps--which only adds up to 4.18 gb, and on an 8g touch, should leave me with about 4 gb of "wiggle room", so to speak, rather than .27 gb.
    Help, please!

iTunes will normally put just one copy of each file on the iPod and link it to multiple playlists. If your iPod's database has been corrupted at some point however, there may be unattached copies of your meadia from earlier sync attempts, taking up space on the drive, but not visible in the library. How much space does iTunes report for Other? Excluding files placed manually & intentionally on the iPod, "other" is typically an overhead of 1%-2% of the size of the media and represents the iPod database, artwork, games etc. If you have significantly larger amounts of "other" then you will need to restore your iPod in order to reclaim the space.

  • Why are my apps taking up more space than what the appstore says they will? Like were talking a full GB more than what it should.

Why are my apps taking up more space than what the appstore says they will? Like were talking a half a GB more than what it should.
For example the app Modern Combat 4 says it should only be 1.58 GB on the appstore but when i go into settings>general>usage it says it takes up 2.0 GB.
Ive tried deleting the apps and then reinstalling them but they still take up so much more space.
This happens for multiple apps of mine. Some I have never even opened before.
    I have an ipod touch (4th Gen)(32GB).
I link to a mac computer.
    I have IOS version 6.1.3
I noticed this a long time ago but didnt need the space, Now i need the space!!
    Please help!!

Because you see the file size of the compuressed file. The file gets expanded when installed and that takes up more space. Also, data is kept in the app.

  • Movie files take up more space than they should

Hi! I'm new to iDVD, and I wanted to take about 20 .mp4 files and put them on a DVD that a DVD player hooked to my TV will be able to read. The combined size of all the files is under 4GB and will fit on a burnable DVD. But when I drag them into iDVD, it only lets me have like 5 before it says it is full. Why is this happening? Why should the video take up more space than the file's actual size? If anyone can help, I'd appreciate it!

iDVD works on time and NOT on RAW file size!!
All video is converted to MPG-2 by the encoding process in iDVD. With a single layer disc, you can get UP TO 60 minutes of content in Best Performance mode and UP TO 120 minutes in Best Quality mode.

  • Time Machine takes up space on SSD

    Hey guys,
First I wanna apologize if this has been addressed, I tried looking for it with no avail. Anyway, I had set up a NAS using my router, but it was formatted in NTFS so my Windows 8 laptop can use it as well.
Well after learning about the OWC SSD upgrade for the Macbook Pro Retina I decided that maybe I should purchase it, but I'll need to create a Time Machine back up so if I wanna restore it to the new SSD I can do so easily. I'm still unsure about the entire process, but I hope to learn it before I progress. I talked with both Apple and OWC and turns out this upgrade doesn't void any warranties, either from Apple care or origninal warranty as long as it's installed properly.
Anyway, after transferring everything from my external HDD to my SSD, I reformatted it to Mac Journaled then transferred everything back to the external HDD. Then I started my time machine backup.
After that completed, I unplugged it and carried on with my day. After restarting my computer I looked at my storage space and to my shock and dismay, I had over 100 GBs being taken up for 'backups' on my primary SSD and I couldn't figure out how to get rid of it.
By luck I turned off time machine and turned it back on and all that space was given back to me. I did another time machine backup several hours later and noticed 40 GBs were take up. Did the same thing (turning off and back on time machine) and the space was returned to me.
Basically why is this happening? Why is my internal SSD storing backups? Is this normal, should I ignore it and the system will remove this as needed? Or is it common practice to turn off and on the time machine to return that space back to me.
Thanks for the help and deeper understanding.
    vahdyx

It's normal. Time Machine now stores local snapshots on portable Macs. The space used by backups is only used if there's space to do so - if you need the space for other file storage, they will be automatically deleted.

  • Time Machine backup requires significantly more space than size of hard drive + external

I can't seem to figure out what is going on here. I recently purchased a new Macbook Pro with a 1T SSD hard drive, upgrading from an older MB Pro with a 500 GB hard drive. In the past I've used Time Machine to back up my hard drive and an external hard drive with RAW format photos and video footage that totals 441.56 GB. My internal internal hard drive currently is 487 GB, and I've used a 1TB time machine back up without problem to date.
I used Time Machine to install on the new system and it worked flawlessly, except that the Time Machine backups wouldn't continue. Time Machine--even when left overnight--would get hung up on Preparing Files to Back Up. So, I reformatted the Time Machine disk (lost the old backups) and attempted to back up from scratch. I then got a message that I need 3.37 TB to complete my new Time Machine back up, though the total size of the back up on disk is ~930 GB. I've read that Time Machine needs 20% - 30% overhead on disk to work well, but I can't figure out why it would require 3x the back up size. I'm hesitant to purchase a new 4 TB external hard drive as I suspect this is a software issue. I've tried reformatting the disk twice more (three total), rebooting my computer, etc. but I keep getting the 3.37 TB message. I'm operating Mavericks OS 10.9.4.
I would be grateful for insight on this.
    Best,
    Alex

Hi Linc, thanks for taking a look at this problem. I just reinitiated a backup to make sure it's most up-to-date. Without the external hard drive, I was able to complete a simple backup. After plugging the external in again, here's the log I got:

  • Time Machine takes up much more space than actually data backed up...

Every time I backup with time machine, it uses up gigs of space on my backup drive, regardless of increment or decrement of data on Mac.  I could put 200 megs since last backup and TM eats 4 gigs.  I don't change the file exclusion selections at all.  Just curious if anyone knows why that is?

I find it hard to believe I added 4gb since last backup.
You'd be surprised. Sometimes you add more than you think. Any downloads, recently edited documents, etc all will add to the total. Plus system files such as browser history are updated and backed up as well. If it has been a few days since your last backup, I wouldn't worry. If this is happening ALL the time and you know that you have been barely using your computer, you may have a problem that needs to be further looked into.

  • Time machine deleting many more backups than necessary - how to stop it?

I did something that I expected to cause a full backup and might require TM to do some cleanup. Time machine has started eating my old backups and has quite a healthy appetite. I'm quite afraid it's going to wipe out my entire backlog of backups.
    So here's what I did:
    - turned off TM
    - defragmented my boot disk* by using SuperDuper to create a clone of my boot disk, reformat my boot disk, clone back to my boot disk
    - Selected "Choose Disk" in TM
    - Selected "Backup Now"
(I expected TM to do a full backup do to changed i-nodes on the file or whatnot)
TM thinned out the backups as expected by removing weekly backups for the prior month. It then proceeded to start deleting old backups.
At last count, my TM Disk had 452.87GB of 999.86GB. My boot disk is using 142.49GB free of 319.73GB. So, there would be room for a full backup even if my boot disk was completely full but it's not.
What can I do to get TM back on track without losing all my old backups?
    Thanks,
    Dean
    * Yes, I know I don't NEED to defrag, but even Apple recognizes that if you do a lot of video work, it's possible you might actually benefit from a defrag.

Any time you replace everything on a disk (or the disk itself), it's considered changed and will be backed-up in it's entirety. This even happens if you do a full system restore from TM backups: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1338
The new backup will require as much space as the data on your internal HD, plus 20% for workspace.

So the backup should require about 170 GB of free space.
To confirm what's going on, Click here to download the +Time Machine Buddy+ widget. It shows the messages from your logs for one TM backup run at a time, in a small window. Navigate to the backup in question, then copy and post the messages (but only to the first deletion) for that run here.

  • If my backup HD is not large enough, can Time Machine use more than one destination HD?

Hi, I have about 0,8 Tb on my Mac + 0,9 Tb in an external HD + 2,5 Tb in another external HD.
I have plenty of other HDs with 1-2 Tb that I could use as backup. Can I use them in Time Machine? Can Time Machine split all the data from my Mac and source HDs in more than one destination HD? I would love it if I could avoid buying large 6-10Tb HDs; they are still expensive... I'll appreciate your kind inputs!

Technically, you could store parts of your backup on different drives, but it would require you to be constantly changing the items excluded. It is designed to be a single backup, which you can do the entire backup to more than one drive.
