TNS name resoultion error

Hi,
When I try to ping a tns alias using tnsping, I get the error , TNS - 03505 : Failed to resolve name.
But I am able to connect to the same database from my SQL plus using the tnsnames.ora file @ the location : C:\DEVSUITEHOME_1\NETWORK\ADMIN.
The entry for the corresponding alias exists in the tnsnames.ora file at this location.
Can somebody tell me the reason for this error and also what needs to be changed to be able to tnsping the alias succeffully.
Thanks much!

Thanks much! Please execute both the tnsping and the sqlplus connection at a command line, then use copy and paste to show us exactly what your full command line is and exactly the full response from oracle.

Does anyone have any ideas what else I can check. I'm a Unix person, not a Windows person, which is making it even more complicated. If I was on Unix, I'd just blow everything away and start again from scratch, but since I'm not sure how to remove all traces from the registry, etc., I don't want to try that on this machine. There was already one other database created, but it's not goign to be used.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    regards,
    Tarisa.

    hi,
thanks for the info. the problem, as it turns out, was that I was connected to the db server via a terminal service (Microsoft Management Console), which for some reason caused probelms with TNS. After I connected directly to the machine using VNC, I was able to create the database with no problems. strange but true.
    regards,
    Tarisa.

  • Connect to Oracle through ODBC - TNS: No Listener Error

    Hi All,
I've been trying to chase this problem down for over a month now and I have had no luck. When I try to connect to an Oracle server through MS Access I get the TNS: No Listener error. The kicker is when I go to the odbc data source administrator in windows I am able to connect to the oracle server. My computer is windows 2007 and I have Oracle 11.2 installed. Could anyone assist?

Yes, the XP firewall is running. During the Oracle instalation it poped up twice, but I selected 'Unblock'. I can't turn it off because it is running using the domain settings, but I can add exceptions (programs or ports). Port 1521, tnsping or sqlplus are not blocked and there is an option 'Display a notification when Windows Firewall blocks a program' witch is checked.

  • TNS names can't be resolved

    Hi All!
I try to connect to a database and the error message that TNS names can't be resolved. tnsnames.ora is copied from the PC where the connection works. Only one instance of Oracle client (9.2) is installed. I tried to add a TNS names in Net Assistent. It worked and the test within the assistent was successfull. The tnsnames.ora was also adjusted. But! I don't see the service in NetManager and I can't add any service there. The NT user is a member of the administrator group. I also try to connect using SQL plus, Excel, Enterprice manager - it doesn't work. Any ideas?
Is there any Windows service for the TNS? How it calls? I tried to check it with lsnrctl status but the command is not exist. Only client is installed on the PC.
    Thanks,
    Andrej

If you copied it from another PC then check that you have the correct entries in sqlnet.ora
For instance, in sqlnet.ora, if the parameter NAMES.DEFAULT_DOMAIN=yourserver_name.domain_name is not in use (commented out) and your net service name in[b] tnsnames.ora is mydb.yourserver_name.domain_name , when you try connecting with mydb as the connect string, you will get that error.
To resolve that, you either enter the connect string as mydb.yourserver_name.domain_name or uncomment NAMES.DEFAULT_DOMAIN in sqlnet.ora(add it if it does not exist) or change the net service name intnsnames.ora to mydb

  • Local Database, TNS Names & ORA-12541: No Listener

I am trying to get IFS working on our new Windows 7 machine and the entire department is scratching it's head right now.
I have gotten Oracle 11.2.0.1 installed and finally being seen by the ODBC thanks to the past threads on the forum mentioning the System Environment Variable. However, now I need to be able to get the program to sync the information that I can pull from "MPRDSP6", the one working ODBC connection right now.
In the past with Oracle XE we had the following in our TNS Names file:
    XE =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = COMPUTER.company.local)(PORT = 1521))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SERVER = DEDICATED)
    (SERVICE_NAME = XE)
The XE was created whenever Oracle XE was installed and we just added in our MPRDSP6 at the end of the TNS Names file. This was what we used when making the local copy for our personell that would travel and need access to the database.
However, with Oracle 11.2.0.1, there was no TNS Names file whenever it installs and I had to create it --> Inputting our XE entry and the other, MPRDSP6.
Upon trying to 'Test Connection' in the ODBC screen I get:
    Unable to Connect
    SQLState=S1000
    [Oracle][ODBC][Ora] ORA-12541: TNS:no listener
Whenever I try to sync the MPRDSP6 with the local copy of it (named local_db), I am getting an error from the program saying:
Could not find the Local Oracle Data Folder. Please make sure your Local Oracle is running and that you have set the Local Database Creator.
I am assuming this is simply because there is actually no database in existance: it is just in the TNS Names.
    I am Running Windows 7 x64
Forgive me if this is a very simple fix as I am completely new to the world of Oracle.
Thanks in advance for any help!

Having the same issue, trying to connect IFS Sales and Marketing. In my case, I am using Oracle Express 10g, Windows 7 32-bit. My ODBC DSN can find the "host" server, but does not seem to find the local Oracle Express instance.

  • How to solve ORA-12560:TNS:protocol adapter error?

I'm trying to use sqlplus on Windows 2008 R2 which is installed on VirtualBox to access an Oracle 11gR2 database on Red Hat Linux.
I'm sure that the database on Red Hat Linux is up and tnsnames.ora is a copy from another machine which is used by another application to connect to the same Oracle database.
When I run sqlplus, I got the ORA-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error.
    sqlnet.ora
    SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES = (NTS)
Both sqlnet.ora and tnsnames.ora are located in c:\app\administrator\product\11.2.0\client64\network\admin folder.
    The registry ORACL_HOME has c:\app\administrator\product\11.2.0\client64.
echo %ORACLE_HOME% incommand window returns %ORACLE_HOME%
echo %ORACL_SID% in command window returns %ORACLE_SID%
If I set ORACLE_HOME to another folder, I will get the following error:
    Error 6 initializing SQL*Plus
SP2-0667: Message file sp1<lang>.msb not found
SP2-0750: You may need to set ORACLE_HOME to your Oracle software directory
So, I believe the ORACLE_HOME in registry has the correct value.
I have also tried set ORACLE_SID to the service name listed in tnsnames.ora but sqlplus still returns the ORA-12560:TNS:protocol adapter error.
For unknown reason, the value of ORACLE_HOME and ORACLE_SID I set by using set command will not persist after I close the command window that I set the values.

    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks.

You didn't describe how you performed the upgrade process. But it looks like you performed a migration process instead. If there is no listener service listed it's because it has never been started, or even configured. You should use the netca or the network manager to configure the listener and start it. The first time it starts it shows an error on windows platforms because the service originally doesn't exist, once it is created it displays the listener status.
Please check the name resolution mechanism. If you are working on dhcp assigned IP or if you have a fixed IP. In case you are working with dynamic IP address you should configure a loopback adapter, and I suggest you reading this reference: Connectivity. Loopback Adapter.

The listener and database seem to start fine. I've included entries for sqlnet.ora, tnsnames.ora and ORACLE_SID and ORACLE_HOME values for my user.
    mui> tnsping orcl
    Used parameter files:
    /pinmaster/newtools/oracle_10.2/linux/network/admin/sqlnet.or
Used TNSNAMES adapter to resolve the alias
    Attempting to contact (DESCRIPTION = (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = cgbu-p731v2.us.oracle.com)(PORT = 1521)) (CONNECT_DATA = (SERVER = DEDICATED) (SERVICE_NAME = orcl)))
    TNS-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error
    From sqlnet.ora: NAMES.DIRECTORY_PATH= (TNSNAMES, EZCONNECT)
    From tnsnames.ora:
    ORCL =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = cgbu-p731v2.us.<<my domain entry>>.com)(PORT = 1521))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SERVER = DEDICATED)
    (SERVICE_NAME = orcl)
    EXTPROC_CONNECTION_DATA =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = IPC)(KEY = EXTPROC1))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SID = PLSExtProc)
    (PRESENTATION = RO)
    This is from init.ora
    # Database Identification
    db_domain=""
    db_name=orcl
Environment variables for the database user:
    9mui> env | grep ORACLE_SID
    ORACLE_SID=orcl
    13mui> env | grep ORACLE_HOME
    ORACLE_HOME=/pinmaster/newtools/oracle_10.2/linux

One of the more common issues causing 12560 is that the host in the listener.ora does not match current host name. Commonly caused by dhcp.
    Your tnsnames.ora looks for cgbu-p731v2.us.oracle.com
Your listener.ora want to listen for cgbu-p731v2.us.<<my domain entry>>.com
Your hostname is ??? (enter 'hostname' at command line)

  • TNS-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error - Of a different sort

    Hi ,
    Have a unique problem.
    System :- Win 2K
I have installed 9iDB & 9iDS. They were working perfectly fine. I was able to connect to DB from forms. But due to some restrictions i had to resort to 6i forms.
Now i installed 6i forms on the same machine. But when i try to connect to DB i get the TNS:Protocol Adapter error. I am sure the instance and the listener is up and running. Because still i am able to connect from 9i forms. The DB name is MYDB.
The error i am getting is :-

Can someone please guide me as to how i can connect to my 9iDB from 6iforms.

Oracle is a bit touchy with tnsnames.ora spelling. I copied your entry, just changing names :
    MYDB =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = hostname)(PORT = 1521))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SERVER = DEDICATED)
    (SERVICE_NAME = orcl)

    ERROR:
ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve service nameThen I change MYDB entry, just adding some spaces :

  • TNS-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error  TNS-00530: Protocol adapter error

    Unable to start listener service.
Running Oracle Database 11gr2 on Windows 7.
I just installed Oracle with the "install software only" option.
Already set up the instance, the database, the dictionary views, etc.
Created tsnames.ora, sqlnet.ora and listener.ora as shown below.
Before installing Oracle I followed the instruction on Oracle
documentation to install a Loopback Adapter.
It is set up as the primary adapter as indicated on the
instructions. The name is "gabylan" (previously the computer
name was "P4". I set up the "hosts" file as indicated, the oracle_hostname
variable, etc. as you will see below. I don't know if it's important to "uncomment"
the line on the "hosts" file for the "localhost" entry, I left it
    as it was originally.
    Services currently in "Started" Status:
    OracleServiceorcl
    Oracle orcl VSS Writer Service
    OracleMTSRecoveryService
    OracleOraDb11g_home1ClrAgent
    OracleServiceorcl

Edited by: shajib on Mar 12, 2010 1:31 PM

Step 1 - from a command line on the database machine, enter 'lsnrctl status' and report the output
Step 2 - display the contents of the %ORACLE_HOME%\network\admin\tnsnames.ora file on the machine running sqlplus.
These are the first two stepo, whether on the database machine or in a traditional client-server configuration.
