Does anyone use Toast Titanium 7 (by Roxio)?
Is this the right place for a question on Toast?
I am trying to make a CD that will be able to play slide-shows in DVD players that connect to Televisions.
I tried first with Toast Titanium 6 and then realized that Tiger is not compatable with Toast Titanium 6. So I plucked down the $70 upgrade to "Element 5", downloaded and installed.
I can cut a data CD.
But when I cut a "Super Video CD" with a QuickTime slide-show that I created in iPhoto, it will not play in the DVD player on my TV, nor in the G4 iMac Superdrive.

SVCDs uses MPEG-2 video compression (encoding). VDCs employ MPEG 1 encoding.
QuickTime supports conventional VCDs: see "Mac OS X 10.4 Help: Playing a Video Compact Disc (VCD)." With Quicktime, MPEG-2 compression is only available with the extra-cost QuickTime MPEG-2 Component.
Your home DVD player may also not support the SCVD format. Check the manual that came with the DVD player for the disk formats it supports. For example, my home DVD player supports VCDs but not SVCDs.
Try burning a VCD instead.
Note that if you use iDVD to create a DVD of the iPhoto slide show and burn it to DVD-R media, it should play on both Macs running Mac OS X and most home DVD players. See:• "iPhoto 6.0 Help: Exporting a slideshow to iDVD."

Toast 8 Question

I just saw that Toast 8 is out and is the only program that will work with the just out TivotoGo for Mac. I still can't seem to figure out how this works. I have a Tivo and a Mac. How do they communicate with each other? We bought the Tivo almost 3 years ago and as far as I know it doesn't have any wireless capabilities. How else do they connect so I can get the Tivo shows on my Macbook and then eventually burn them through Toast 8?

Toast Titanium Question

I have just loaded this software up and have attempted to record onto my first DVD+R disc, but cannot get it to work in my DVD player or even my Mac.....I think this is because I chose the DivX choice in the menu on the left had side.
Could someone please talk me through how to record onto a disc from the start. The movies I have are in AVI format. DO i just drag to Toast and record as a DVD-Video? I don't wanna keep randomly trying as it will wreck all my DVD's.
Any help would be very gratefully received.

Thanks for the answer, I finally got it to work, however when I played it in the DVD player, the sound is not in sync with the actual movie, it plays about 10 secs prior. Any ideas? I put the picture quality up to the best setting, does that make a difference?

Toast 10 Question (AVCHD Archive)

Sorry is this is in the wrong place but I really didn't know where to post it!
Hi, I'm trying to do a AVCHD archive of my camcorder, its a Sony HDR-SR8 PAL model.
I purchased Toast 10 Pro for the sole reason of doing this. When I connect my camcorder Toast recognizes it and says it'll take ten DVD's to archive what's already in my camcorder.
When I insert a blank DVD and hit record for the first time I got the following message:
"could not record the disc because of a mac os error result code = 50"
Then when I tried again I got a message saying "data will span 0 (zero) discs" and when I hit ok nothing happens.
This is so confusing why its not working and I would really appreciate any help to solve the problem.

Burning using DVD+R's

Sorry, mate. I dont blame you for looking for an answer wherever you can get it.
I think the answer is, that its roxio toast and you will not get an answer. I have tried searching and searching for roxio errors to no avail. Its not an apple program, sorry to say and really should be offered with a trial.
My example: I have roxio toast 9, and all I wanted to to was burn the AIC files from iMovie into a blu-ray disc. Fretted for months, but the error would show up ALWAYS at the end of the encode (after some 6 hours of encoding.) My only theory is that there was a limit on the number of AIC files I could add. I dont know. But I found nothing in the documentation or from users. Just a theory.
Then toast 10 came out. Guess what. The same process I tried with 9 works every time.
I see posts all the time with people trying to get help, and either no one answer.
1. Maybe try uninstalling and reinstalling.
2. Perhaps you can find a work-around where you break up the content yourself and try a smaller archive attempt. Perhaps move all of your .mts files off the camera onto a harddrive, except for ONE clip. See if it archives properly.
3. If the camera takes a memory stick, then record a 20 sec clip and see if that imports with the same settings.
4. Search the first few clips on the camera. Do they still play back thoroughly? Perhaps one is corrupt and deleting it fixes the problems. You never know, one of the preview thumbnails could be corrupt and toast depends on that file to start its index.
5. Try a different brand of disk.

Problem with Toast Titanium 9

I am trying to burn an HD DVD with Toast Titanium 9. It goes through the "Encoding" but refuses to burn the DVD and gives me a OS System error -50. I am using Fotomagico Pro to produce a slideshow to burn on the DVD. I found the error code which is a paramErr (Error in user parameter list). Where is the paramater list and how do I correct this error?

Guidelines for Free Space needed to successfully burn DVD?

I have been struggling for the last three weeks to get a successful burn of an iDVD (7.0.4) home movie using my 2005 iMacG5Power PC, OS10.5.6.
The movie I’m trying to burn has the following characteristics:
Edited in Final Cut Express (3.5), 45 minutes in length, with 10 Chapter Markers, and containing a 50-50 mix of 4x3 and 16x9 video clips downloaded into QuickTime files from a Sony TRV70 (standard Definition) and a Canon HD Vixia HV30. Although the Canon original mini-DV tapes are High Definition, I captured them as standard def in 16x9 format.
From FCE, I exported the edited movie as a QuickTime, self contained “Sequence” movie file which has a total size of ~28Gigs.
I dragged this Sequence QT movie file into iDVD having selected the Version 7.0 Sunflower theme, proceeded to author this theme with JPG pictures, and with inserted favorite iTunes selections. The iDVD movie file fully authored resulted in a 1.8G “.dvdproj” file, and a 3.2G “.img” file.
I have ~52G of free space on my start up drive.
I have not been able to get through a successful burn whether I use iDVD or Disk Utility or Toast 6.0 Time after time I get an error message at the very end of the iDVD process that says: “Multiplexer Error-There was an error during formatting”.
I have tried burning the disc image using Disk Utility and with Toast with similar results, …….after about 4 hours of elapsed encoding time, the process quits and spits out the DVD media at a point that often is involved with writing lead-in or lead-out functions, or something that says no response from hardware.
To check software and hardware functionality, today I spent “testing” all of this by using a random 3 minute portion of the overall 45 minute movie, and produced successful burns with iDVD, Disk Utility, and Toast.
Question
Is 52 G of free space on my start up drive sufficient for a Sequence QT movie of 28G ?
Tougher Question
How does one check his original edited FCE movie for potential errors that could affect the final burning process? (I have checked CHAPTER markers for placement, and frame spacing on either side of markers)
The iDVD Project Info pane and Project flow map show no red warnings; I’m well within the size and time guidelines for Best Performance burning on a standard 4.7G DVD-R medium.
Help…..this is getting frustrating. I think I did a great job editing this home movie, but the only way I will be able to show it off, is to have the family sit in front of the iMac!! Up till now, I have burned many one hour home movies using Tiger and iDVD 5 on this same iMac. What’s going on?

the less-desscriptive 'multiplexing error' message usually does NOT indicate not enough disk space.
but ..
check project
• no involved file (audio, video, stills) should contain a 'bad character' in its name / | \ . … ; , ; ...
• no part should be 'audio less' .. e.g. iPhoto slideshows without music can create such an error
• you need at last 10-15GBs free on internal/if partitioned: MacOs-drive for using iDVD

Burning Question (unreliable Toast)

Hi.
A problem and some questions.
My Toast (6.1.1) keeps freezing and Force Quit doesn't work.
I have deleted pref files (found two), reinstalled, cretaed new user, to no avail.
That's the problem. Now the Q's:

I prefer Toast over DVDSP as you can control burning speed. But having said this, I did burn today from DVDSP (I have the bundled version that comes with FC Studio 5) and it plays well on two stand alone DVD players I tried. I used Verbatim X16 media. Is burning speed still an issue?

If I go buy Toast 7 will it stop hanging on me?

I prefer Toast also. As to the speed issue, it may be a non issue if they are playing okay. Where are the DVDs going? Clients? Friends & family? Youself? If clients then you need to be absolutely sure (different story if replicating discs and this is just samples, you can explain the issue of whaat cause playback problems from time to time), the later, you can always fix it.

Sounds like you did some of the troubleshooting, have you tried also repairing permissions or run diskwarrior? Sounds like if shutting it off then starting it up cured the problem, the boot up clean up repairs may have helped. Are you using an external Burner? Do you have any FW peripherals attached? Sometimes I have had hangs like that from bad cables or power supply coming slightly off, look liked power but not really getting to the device. After the reinstall to you go back to 6.1.1 (or is that your install?) I had an earlier version of 6 that I had to upgrade to 6.1.1.
Has the sytem changed recently? (It sounds like Toast had been okay until now?)

Toast 7 Importing and Editing Questions

My story so far is, I got most of a short project done in iMovie 3.0.3, but one of my songs near the end is hopelessly screwed up by two seconds of phantom sound which can't be seen and can't be deleted. Through trial and error I determined the sound was on the soundtrack, not in the clip.
My question is about importing from more than one iMovie project into Toast 7, and editing the content to be actually burned to DVD.
If I put the song currently being messed up in the order it's supposed to be on one copy of the project, the audio at the end of the project will almost certainly inherit THE CURSE OF THE PHANTOM SOUND.
What if I do that in one copy, but leave it where it is in the other copy? Can I import just the good copies of each song in the project to Toast 7, even though it means importing from two different copies of the project? Or do you have to import the iMovie project as a whole?
If you have to import all of each copy of the project as a whole, will Toast 7 get all screwed up and start complaining before I even get a chance to delete the duplicates, as it would be two copies of things with the same names in slightly different order?
IF I CAN'T DO THIS, it will mean upgrading to another version of iMovie and a whole other set of problems and questions.
Thanks for anything that may help straighten me out or set me on the right path.

To phrase it another way, how much, if any, editing is possible in Toast? It might be simpler to keep both copies the same, put in however many minutes of black space would cover over the bad audio spot, then put the end of the project after that. But in Toast, can I edit the black space down to just the ten seconds I want? Or do I have to burn the whole thing "as is" and then do the editing when I dub from the DVD to the VHS tape?

FCP log & transfer VS Toast question

I have noticed when I use log and transfer to injest material from AVCHD .mts files they go straight on the timeline (Pro Res 422 1920 x 1080) without the red bar appearing. When I use toast to convert the material to Pro res, FCP need to do a quick audio render. I looked at Toast and it converts the .mts audio part into AAC. Is this correct or should Toast be set to convert to PCM 48Khz or should I leave it as AAC and let it render?

Yes, you guessed it, you need to set Toast to render audio as Linear PCM 48Khz AIFF ... FCP does not like AAC audio

Burning in iDVD vs Toast 8 - capacity question

I've been downloading Heroes and burning them to video DVD in Toast 8. I was experimenting in iDVD 6 as I like the DVD menu options better than in Toast. In Toast I can fit 4 episodes per disc. In iDVD I can only fit 2 episodes per disc. Why is this and is there a way to fit more episodes per disc in iDVD?
The video files are Xvid .avi files approximately 350 MB each. In Toast the encoding settings are: Average Bit Rate - 3.0Mbps, Maximum BR - 3.0 Mbps, Motion Estimation - Best, Half-Pel checked, Reencoding auto, field dominance auto, aspect ratio 16:9, audio format Dolby Digital, audio Data Rate auto, Dynamic Range Compression unchecked. In iDVD the encoding is set to Best Quality.

iMovie/iDVD are designed to edit movies in DV video format and then place the edited movied on a DVD in mpg-2 format. iDVD is set to put a maximun of 120 minutes of content on a single layer DVD disc for quality reasons.
Your files are already VERY heavily compressed - 60 minutes into 350 MB!!! DV video would be 13 GB for 60 minutes and if you put 120 minutes on a single layer disc using iDVD, it would be 2 GB for the same 60 minutes.
Stick to using Toast 8 for what you are doing!

To Toast or to Burn in SP- that is the question.

I know many of you recommend doing the project build in DVDSP and then burning with Toast. I recently started using Toast 6.1.1. to burn my project, but I don't see any appreciable quality difference than burning it in DVDSP 3. I used best quality settings and burned at 1XDVD. Are my settings askew? Is the difference that negligible when burning between the 2 programs? I know that Toast does a verify and DVDSP does not, but I've burned over 100 DVDs in SP and only produced 1 coaster! Thanks in advance for the input.

Yup...David is right. use Toast to burn as 1xDVD and the compatability is said to be better.
I use Toast exclusively.
Just build out of SP...test the build with the DVD player (I don't know why some folks wouldn't just in case something is messed up)...then burn 'from video_ts folder'...drag your audio and video over; select the 1xDVD speed and click the button. Good luck!

I've burned a couple of CDs with Toast Titanium 8 with success since installing SL. Haven't tried DVDs yet. However, I had no luck with Tivo Transfer portion of Toast 8. Sounds like that is what other users are experiencing as well. I might have to bite the bullet and upgrade to Version 10.

10.5.5 and Toast 9.0 Question

I have checked the Toast manual and did a bunch of searching here and on the Roxio site, but I still can't find any instruction that describe how to burn to both DVD Burners if you have a 2nd one installed.
Any suggestions would greatly appreciated!!

You don't mean simultaneously, right?
I use both my internal burner and an external LaCie burner.
When I run Titanium and select burn, I am given the option of either drive.

Roxio Toast question

Hi. I have not yet upgraded to logic pro from logic express but I love the abilities of waveburner for encoding cds for manufacturing. I have the latest mac and snow leopard system. Which roxio program should I get? I just want it mostly for encoding cds. What do you all recommend? or is there another better program?

Toast Titanium is fine for burning audio CDs but I'd rather keep my money for the Logic Pro upgrade. That said, if you're mainly interested to Toast for CD burnin', you may to check out Audiofile Engineering's Wave Editor. Wave Editor is a very good audio editor and it allows you to create Red-Book compatible audio CDs + the possibility to save your master as a DDP File. At 79$, it's a steal!

Roxio Toast: back DVD movie question

I'm trying to make a back of my DVD movie. First I'm trying to make an image file. But when I try to save as a disk image I'm told that it can't unmount the disc, even when all other programs are closed. Any help? I'm just trying to make a backup copy of my DVDs. Maybe there's a better way?
