TOC Chapters

Whenever I import a Word document, the chapters in the TOC
display as icons that appear as little red books. Some of these
book icons can be double-clicked to display a converted page.
However, the book icon changes to a topic icon when I compile my
.chm file.

The topic is the first topic in the TOC. There are no other
pages inside. However, if I add other pages inside, the linked
topic doesn't appear at all when I double-click the book icon. It
will only appear in cases where there are no other pages inside.
Also, when I import a Word document, RoboHelp links single
topics to books itself. These book icons then change to page icons
if the project is closed and re-opened. So, in other words, even
RoboHelp's own conversion from Word produces this problem. It
doesn't just happen when I link a topic to a book manually myself.
I just noticed that I can get the page icon to display as a
book icon if I choose another icon from the Advanced tab in the
Properties window. Currently, it is set for Auto. But if I choose
#1 instead, the icon will remain a book.

  • HT4168 epub: I'd like to create chapters for the TOC but don't want the new chapter to begin on a new page. I'd like it to begin on the same page as the prior chapter. How can I do that?

How can I do this? I currently have my TOC chapters listed as Apples, Oranges, and so on.  But my text chapters begin something like this:
    1
    Apples
    2
    Oranges
I have "Apples" with header 1, "Oranges" with header 1, etc., so that very nicely in the TOC it is listing my topics as the chapters. However, within the body of the document, 1 appears on one page and "Apples" begins at the top of a new page, separated from "1"; 2 appears one one page and "Oranges" appears at the top of the next page (separated from the "2), and so on.
Because of the way the book is structured, I need to have the chapter numbers on a top line and the chapter topic beneath it. (The book is further subdivided, such as 1.3a, 1.3b, etc.)
What I would like is for the TOC to indicate my chapters as Apples, Oranges, etc., but for the chapter text to begin as indicated above.
How can I do this?  Thanks.

Peter, I styled the wording of the chapter title (e.g. apples) with my heading1 styling and my sub-chapter titles were heading2. The text is a different font, different color, different size, different everything.  It seems that the epub program has an automatic format to start a new page with each new header. That's what I'm trying to work around. (Originally I styled both the numeral and the chapter title as "heading 1" and it gave each a different page!)
I am in the process of removing all headers and styling everything manually (which is how it was originally) just to avoid this problem.
I'm having my e-book done through a publisher (this will be self-published), so I'll be giving them a .docx and they'll convert it to .html (filtered) then .epub. so I need something that creates my Table of Contents as I'd like it, without messing up the text of the book.
I can give them a list of what I want in the Table of Contents, and have them manually do it, but the TOC may or may not come out how I want it to come out. My preference is to have something automatic. I wanted the sub-units (heading 2) in the TOC but that will never work since I have over 200 of them and it's too much for them to do manually.  It's a very slow process.

  • TOC NAVIGATION?

    Hi,
A little challenged on using the TOC for navigation.
    I have a 46 slide +/- project.
I have 5 slide groups labeled in the TOC - chapters of information - I want the user to freely naviagte at anytime.
No quiz or questions - just an introduction slide that instructs them to select a topic ( group) from the TOC to see the information
I want them to freely move around using the TOC
I am HP PC based using CP 5.5 for this and all my projects
Here are my current TOC settings - but navigation in preview or publish does not work.
clicking a TOC topic takes you nowhere - the projects just plays from 1st slide to the last slide.
thanks for any ideas or response -  Bill

How did you try to navigate? I'm asking this because you can only navigate to slides, not to a slide group. Did you click on the first slide of a group?

  • Need suggestions for proofreading online help files

I have created online help docs off an on for many years...
and have contemplated this issue several times and never come up
    with a really good answer.
Right now, the product manager is tryiing to proof one of the
online help files that i've COMPLETELY revamped and he's
complaining about the time this is taking and how difficult it is
because not all topics are in the TOC...
so I suppose i could regnerate the TOC and include EVERY
SINGLE topic... but I was wondering if anyone else had any other
suggestions for best practices when it comes to reviewing online
    help files.
THANKS for any input you might have.

Umm!. I have to admit that I find your approach of adding ALL
topics to the TOC works as well as any. However it does cause
problems where one or more popup topics appear in the same topic.
This causes a bit of uncertainty unless there is a clear indication
in the topic where a popup exists and an understanding of what TOC
topic to look at. What I tend to do is have a piece of text (e.g.
see popup titled xxxxx) which has a conditional build tag on it.
Then you include the build tag when you compile. I also tend to
have all the popups in a separate book in the TOC. You can then
easily remove all the popups from the finalised output. It means a
bit of tossing and turning between TOC chapters but seems to work
reasonably well. You could also produce two printed copies, one
containing the popups and another containing the main topic
content. Hope this helps solve your conumdrum.

  • We need more ePublishing support!!!!

I'm still trying to figure out what works in ePub as opposed to print documents. Unfortunately the documentation doesn't bother to tell you what does and doesn't work. The truth seems to be very little transfers.
    What we need.
We need proper format tools and preferrably a window dedicated to ePublishing that only accesses controls that acrtually export to ePub type documents. I can't even get paragraph spaces to come through. That's sad!
Related to the formatting tools is a better way of defining pages. I imported a block of text and it appears to show up as a single continuous page. How do I know this? When I add video and audio and set them to trigger on a page turn they trigger when I open the book not the page. Also related to that can we please have a page numbering widget????? Page numbering is pretty basic!
I desperately need an extra control on the audio player. Okay you can set it to trigger when you flip a page and when you turn a page but I need chapter sepecific sound options. Let's say I want to play a music or sound effects clip while a chapter is being read. Say crickets for night or wind, rain and lightning for a stormy night. The potential is huge and all I need is an option to activate when a chapter is opened and when they turn to another chapter the sound will stop. Simple and the benefits would be huge and open a new way to experience books.
Related to that not everyone will want the enhanced content so it'd be useful to be able to add a control page as part of the table of contents so a reader could turn off effects selectively. Say disable sound or video or any motion effects. Give readers the option. Once again simple.
The obvious one is we need templates or some powerful translating tool for exporting to each major format since everyone is in love with their own format.
FYI I had a time finding a video codec that would work for iDevices. Turned out the only one Adobe and Apple would both accept is .264. The problem is no one seemed willing to say that. Even your documentation makes no mention and most web posts say Mpeg but there are lots of Mpeg codecs and only .264 actually works on iDevices from an Adobe output.
Related to the last one please add a chapter on working with ePub format!!!! The current documentation barely mentions it. I'd love to have even a list of supported and unsupported features. Right now I'm reduced to trial and error.
ePublishing has a massive potential but there is virtually no software support at this point. I'm both a writer and filmmaker and there's a massive potential in doing hybrid content. We just need some basic tools to work with. Right now I can crudely paste in sound clips and videos as well as images but with more support we could be talking interactive comics and films and hybrids of books and films. I'm working on a "making of" book for my latest film, a CG animated feature, and I'd love to add in video clips and interactive content. It's so close but we have to have basic layout tools and more control over the content.

I too am having a HECK of a time with indesign files and PDF's converting to EPUB.  There should be actions that we can perfom across the board and globally in the files that we can do across a PDF file and/or an INDESIGN file that sets up a "template" so to speak to direct the new epub to different readers.  I have a 420 page full color textbook I am trying to convert for IPAD.  I told my client I would be able to complete this in 2 weeks.  I have already had it a week and still after training in InDesign and researching everywhere for converting PDF's and Indesign Files to EPUB  I am at a stand still!!!!! Why would I have to TOUCH each and every page If all that I want to do is create the TOC, Chapters BookMarks, Set the Covers, Add Meta Data, and Export this bugger to IPAD.
You should be able to  OPEN a PDF file in InDesign or Acrobat Pro and be able to import covers with metadata, edit, edit any text, use the text fonts that are in the documents, create links on the fly, create TOC Internal and External and be able to link freely to your chapters, etc and outside links.
Have you heard of any shortcuts for this.  I am at wits end!!!  I am not worried about the READING part or the different "Players or Readers"  I just want this bugger to be able to be viewed on the IPAD LIKE ASAP!  So many programs claim to be able to convert the PDF to EPUB but there is no structure in the conversion.  Do you have to do something to the PDF and where do you make the changes?  Which program do you use to EDIT PDF's.  I am confused.  when I try to edit the PDF in Acrobat X Pro, I get Font Errors and I don't know how to add the Fonts to my system.  I have the resident Fonts complied ON my disks with the original Print version on 5 disks.  I run epub check and get so many errors it isn't funny.  This is NOT EASY by any means.  I don't see how others are doing it unless they are paying BIG BUCKS for Programmers!
Any Help ANYONE can give me will be GREATLY appreciated!

  • My TOC in the epub document does not link to the chapters

    Hello!
I created a document in pages that I am exporting as an ePub. When creating the TOC, I have ticked "make page numbers links". However, when I open the epub file, the TOC that appears in the document 1) does not show page numbers; 2) does not link to the chapters (or anywhere else).
What is it that I'm doing wrong? Any help will be appreciated.
    Thank you!

Try a restart of your entire system. Shut down both your modem and your router if they are two separate devices. Then restart each item one at a time with about three minutes between each device.
Also reset the iPad by pressing and holding the Start and Home keys together, ignoring there'd slider until the Apple logo appears.

  • Missing chapters in TOC

My book has two chapters and a photo in Intro Media. The TOC page shows the two expected Chapter selection dots at the bottom of the page.
When I preview on my iPad 3 the TOC contains the Media Intro and first chapter as selection dots. Ther is no way of getting to chapter 2.
I have tried deleting the iBook from the iPad and turning it off and on. Anyone have a suggestion about the problem?

I have partly rebuilt my book from scratch. I've added the two chapters and five sections per chapter. I've added the first photo, full page on each section, the text in succeeding pages, and been careful only to name the chapters and sections via the Books panel. I did restyle the Chapter and Section styles (added an underline and extended it across the page, but changed nothing else. I have also reset my iPad and ensured the eBook was deleted from iBooks.
I've sent the eBook to the iPad via Preview - the same problem - it opens on the first page of the fisrt Chapter. I then go to the TOC which lists the first five sections. There is no dot button at the bottom to switch to the TOC for the second chapter.
Running on a 15" MacBookPro early 2008 with 4 gig memory.
    Any thoughts?

  • TOC showing all chapters as #1

    Please,
How can I fix this TOC on my document, since it's showing every chapter as #1, as seen on the image below:
Only the Preface (6) is correct. The last one is labeled as '8' and all the chapters as '1'.
    Can someone help me, please?

Like Jeff says – check you page numbering. Here's a little more detail.
Select a chapter in the page thumbnails panel on the left-hand side, then open your inspector, click on the document tab (2nd icon), and select 'Numbering'.
Under the "Page Numbers" option, it sounds like you have all your chapter set to 'Start at:' with the valu set to '1'.
Only your first chapter (or where your actual page 1 appears) needs to be set up like this, all subsequent chapters have to have this set up as 'Continue numbering'.

  • CS3 to CS4/CS5-- Book TOC crashes but not in chapters

Hi, i'm having a conversion problem again,
i'm working within a book (like always) and i have a main TOC, that regroups styles from all the documents, in CS3 i had no problem with it, but in CS4/CS5 it makes ID crash and i have no idea why. the thing that is even more strange is that every document inside the book has its own TOC (with more styles) included, and they do not crash my InDesign. It seems to be only the one that "reads" the styles across the book that do so.
    Anybody has an idea why?
i get this error message :
    Thanks in advance!
    Message was edited by: korinsama

edit  that needed a bump :
since my TOC in for the book differs from the TOC in each chapter, i tried importing the one from the chapters (the one that technically doesn't crash)
... but once in the book TOC when i check 'include book documents" ... well... it crashed... so i'm guessing it's not the TOC styles that have a problem but the fact that i'm trying to apply it to the whole book ..... which... is really problematic...
retested the original TOC, just unchecked the "include book documents" and it didn't crash..... i wish there was a detailed crash log so i could understand what's going on... it's kind of ridiculous that i can generate a single document TOC but not the exact same one applied to a book....
soooo the good news is, i can generate each chapter individually and copy/paste into the main TOC, which is good since in earlier version of INDD, copy/pasting TOC made it crash.. and it doesn't anymore

  • The TOC is very confusing. How can I see the page showing the list of chapters and accompanying pages?

The TOC is very confusing. How can I see the whole list of all the chapters, as it would appear in a book? I only can see a vague image of the chapter title, and only from one chapter at a time; the chapter I am on. In the instruction example it shows also only the "title" of the chapter it pertains to, but it is all in legeable text. The inspector gives options, but it does not explain how to apply it, and I cannot see what my option will look like and to what part of the "text" it is referring.

The "lower rectangles" are thumbnails of the actual pages in your book... the text was presumably the content of your book. IF you did as I suggested to keep the TOC listing of a full book.. but removed content on all except the three chapters you want to send off to XXXXX -  then the "rectangles are showing blank pages. Which is normal.
You need to understand that Apple created iBooks Author to create a book which can be obtained from their iBooks store. The application is flexible for customisation to a large extent and the innovative make use of that flexibility. The TOC basically replaces the old Index in printed books to advise readers what content is available.
On an iPad, or Mac now, Insterad of using  "hyperlinks" from a written index page... which is basic web page navigation - Apple chose  to have a visual TOC.
Basically you  have to decide - create a three chapter sample which you seem to require - which will show the TOC as it is, or  if you the whole TOC of the finished book is required to show... but  not the content, you end  up with blank "rectangles".
Screenshots oniPads... press the  top right start button and the  lower centre,  home buttom together and it  makes a screenshot. Transfer to your computer ( email or Dropbox type cloud) and  add to your post.

  • I am still having issues with the TOC. I finally got several chapters and sections to show different pictures in the TOC, but have spent hours trying to figure out how to repeat it. This should be so simple. Is there an update? Please help us Apple.

I am still having issues with the TOC pictures. I got several chapter/section photos to show up, but can't seem to repeat this success. It is some mystery that happened during a time that I had practically given up. This should be such a simple thing. Drag and place a picture into the placeholder and it shows up in the TOC....right? Help, help help! want to get this thing done and it's taken two days of work just get some of the photos to show up. I am going to have to publish this ibook with no photos in several sections.....why can't this be simple? I have even had someone else spend hours trying to figure this out. This software is such a GREAT idea....come on...help with this little part of it.

I had the same problem myself. I got to the point where I couldn't replace the photo, of a new chapter, in the TOC. What I did was to duplicate an existing chapter that was working and was able to replace it's TOC's photo. I also found that if you try different areas of the photo you can sometimes get it to replace correctly. For example, instead of dragging the new photo to the middle of an existing photo, try dragging it to the right top corner.

  • Mini-TOC for multiple chapters

I am writing a course book, in which I added Learning Goals in each chapter. I would like to automatically summarize these learning goals in the preface, as an extra TOC (or Index?).
As far as I know a mini-TOC is only able to generate content out of the chapter (file) it is placed in.
Is there a way for me to generate this list of goals, apart from manually add each goal as an cross reference?
    Thanks!

    Perhaps...
Generate a stand-alone TOC for each chapter.
Have the chapter import that as a Text Inset.
It won't be automatically updated, of course, but when you re-gen and Update References it will be kept up to date without needing to re-import.

  • Removing the TOC and Chapters

Where I just have blank pages to use for pictures.
    Is This possible?
    RD

Crafting a chapter-less book is possible, but a minimum of one section is required.
Remove the chapter label, leave the TOC blank and you'll then have a basic/generic point from which to work with.
Use the 'File/Save As Template' menu before modifying further if you want to reuse later, etc.
    Good luck

  • TOCs for separate chapters in one document

    Hi all,
I am desperately looking for a way to include separate TOCs in one document to get the information for each chapter. Additionally, table of pics and so on should cover the complete document. Any helP? Thanks
    Ronni

Go to Layout > Table of Content Styles…
Create a New ToC style based on the wanted
When you go to insert the new ToC mark not to teplace the old one.
I would recommend to seperate each chapter into its own document collected into one single book file indb. So you can add for each document a ToC which does not include the whole book and in the beginning another Toc which will include all book files.
Take care that not every ToC will create an additional entry into the PDF bookmarks (Toc style setting), otherwise you will have duplicated entries in this situation.

  • TOC in PDF does not include Link OBJR tags when exported from InDesign

I'm using InDesign CS6 to export a book file to a tagged PDF. When I run the accessibility checker in Acrobat 9, I get errors about items not being contained in the Structure tree. These missing items are links for the TOC and the Index page numbers. When I look at the tags, the Link OBJR tag is missing for these elements. I can't possibly manually add them all in. Other links e.g. cross-references, hyperlinks, automatically include these Link OBJR tags when exported. Why does the TOC and Index not do so?
I've asked this question in the InDesign Forum and no one seems to know. If I don't put these tags in, what does that mean for accessibility of the document?
    Thanks for your help

Glad you found something that worked.  For the future ... I found that if you create the PDF from BOOK and following these steps you can get the hyperlinks to automatically tag.  This will work if you are getting editable hyperlink boxes for the TOC -- I find that it is creating these (although I could swear it didn't earlier).  Anyway:
    1. Select all chapters in the book and create PDF with hyperlinks and bookmarks. Save as TEST.PDF
    2. Open the PDF and in the Pages Panel extract the page or pages containing the the TOC from the PDF.  Save this as TOCtest.pdf
    3. Delete the Tags from the TOCtest.pdf file --  in the Tags Panel, select the Root tag, right click and select delete
    4. Select Add Tags to Document to this same file.
    5. Examine the tags to see if all the OBJLINKs are tagged. Repeat steps 3 and 4 again (sometimes it doesn't autotag correctly the first time).  You may have to manually correct some of the structure -- headings and/or artifacts on these pages.
    6. Save again.
    7. Go back to the main document TEST.PDF -- delete the TOC page or pages from that document (assuming you didn't when you extracted.)
    8. On the pages panel, Insert from file and choose TOCtest.pdf -- insert before the first page.
    9. This will bring in the newly tagged TOC and it's tags HOWEVER the tags will be out of order in the tags panel. They will be at the bottom and you will need to find them and MOVE them where they should be.
Still more effort than you should have to but it worked for me.
Not sure how to record a bug with Adobe, but my testing in CS5 shows that this is NOT a new problem.  CS5.5 did the same thing for me.
