TOC in topic

RH9 | WebHelp
Is it possible to show the TOC in the topic pane? You can use a design-time control to do this in HTML Help, but it doesn't work in WebHelp.
Thanks
Jonathan

You could create a topic and drag the topics from the TOC to the topic, adding headings for book titles.

  • RoboHelp 8 HTML/TOC Levels/Topic Names

    Hi,
    I'm a new user to Robohelp HTML 8.
    I have several HTML files (created in Homesite 5.5) that I have imported into Robohelp.  Headings are defined as <h1> <h2> and <h3>.
    I have two issues (so far) relating to TOCs that I have been unable to solve.
    1.  The name that displays in the TOC listing is the name of the link and not the name of the topic. For example, in <h1><a name="ovr">Overview</a></h1>, the TOC displays "ovr" when I want it to display "Overview".
    2.  Robohelp doesn't seem to recognize the differences between <h1>, <h2> and <h3>.  All headings are at the same level.  I have been unable to locate a screen or setting I can use to configure the TOC. Is there one?
    I realize that the files I am importing need a lot of tweaking for RoboHelp.  They were used differently, and right now, I'm just  trying to determine the scope of my nightmare :-)
    Thanks for your help!

    The code looks like the remnants of a hyperlink, just the name part with no link.
    Unless you know something about it, the code does nothing so remove it. You can remove those topics from the TOC and add them back in or just rename them in the TOC editor.

  • Missing TOC books & topics in RH Server output -- is there a fix??

    RH9, RH Server 9,WebHelp Pro
    I've seen a post a few months old now reporting the problem of nested books and topics not showing up in WebHelp Pro RH9 Server output even though they display fine in the local output before and after publication.
    Has there been a fix for this?
    I have a large project, over 400 topics,  and it seems to affect books that are nested at level 4 and below. I have a level 3 book with several level 4 books inside it. The published output shows only the first level 4 book, and its contents, but then it omits the remaining level 4 books in that group and jumps to the next level 3 book.
    This is not a merged project.
    When I run the TOC report, all content is shown correctly in the report.

    Hi. Sorry you're having glitches. While I research my notes from similar situations, I offer these  things worth looking at:
    1. This is a Knowlege Base article with a download that may help:
    Books, topics missing from TOC | WebHelp Pro output | RoboHelp Server 8, 9
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/904/cpsid_90498.html
    2. Take a look at this thread (in particular, Message #10):
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/3691553#3691553
    I don't remember offhand but I think there may indeed be a limit of three "nested books" in a TOC, although I just experimented with this and I found it worked down to 6 or 7  nests.
    3. I know in the past I have noticed that sometimes the culprit has been an oddball "illegal" character or space in a subfolder or filename. One client found that an exclamation point in a filename was a problem.
    4. To be clear, remember that WebHelp (not Pro) has some very important differences from RoboHelp Server (Pro) output. Also, understand that when you view WebHelp Pro locally (i.e. View Results) you are not getting a fully accurate picture. Often, you must view the project from the RoboHelp Server to truly see the results.
    5. With regard to Search. I have found in some cases that ticking the "Automatically Merge Projects of the Same Type" helps even though you only have one project!
    6. I have found that a project that has been "renamed" can cause the server's configuration to be choke on the new name as it looks for the old one.
    Let me know if any of this helps. If it does not, I'd suggest you zip up your Tomcat Log files and send them to me. I'll ask the Adobe folks if they could take a look.
    You can find them here:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Apache Software Foundation\Tomcat 6.0\logs
    Because they might be large, you might just send the most recent day's worth.
    I realize this is a "dump" of so many possibilities but it's the weekend and I know you must be frustrated so I thought I'd pass along all ideas no matter how remote.

  • Can you link from the TOC to  a bookmark within a topic and when activated have the bookmark appear

    at the top of the page?  If so, how?

    You should just be able to drag the bookmark from the Topics pane into the TOC pane (pods if you are using RH8). This will put something like the following into the TOC:
    My Topic#firstbookmark
    Right-click on this and select Rename to change how it will appear in the TOC. You can see the display name (page title) and actual link (Link to) by right-clicking on the TOC entry and selecting Properties.
    (This works in RH6. It should work in RH7 and 8, but I haven't specifically tried it myself.)

  • How to apply conditional build tags to the topic title that is displayed in Search tab of CHM?

    I have the project in which 2 different words are used to reffer to one objects (this word/term depends on the customer). All other information related to functionality, steps, etc. are common. So:
    In the help content (body of the files), I created 2 conditional build tags (CBT) for these terms.
    In TOC, if topic title contains the term, I created 2 different topics reffered to the single topic file, but the title of the topic shows correct term (depends on CBT).
    File names of this topics contain only term1.
    The problem occurs when I generate CHM for CBT2 and search for the term1 (marked with CBT1) using the Search tab. All occurrencies where term1 presence in the file name, appear in the found results.
    How can I resolve the issue?
    These topics must be found by search (that's why "Exclude from search" option is not a decision).

    Ahhh, you are correct. I believe it was Version 10 introduced that.
    So here's what I'd suggest. Even though you are unable to use a variable in a Topic Title, it can still be used in other places such as the TOC, the Index and in the Topic content. So I'd still recommend that you declare and use a variable for those items. Just to simplify things.
    As for any topics that have the term in the title, you could create two topics. One with the term one way and the other with the term the opposite way. Then use a Conditional Build Tag to exclude and remove the one that shouldn't be found.
    This may cause you a bit of a maintenance issue by having the same topic content in more than one place. (one for each topic)
    So to overcome that, you would be able to add the main body information to a topic and use an Inline Frame in the two topics that would then simply be shells with appropriate Topic Titles. Either that or declare a snippet and use the snippet in both topics. Put the main part in the snippet.
    Cheers... Rick

  • One TOC + Many TOCs

    Hi,
    I'm using RH8, Webhelp, Zoom.
    I just want to get a different opinion on this...
    I currently have one large project, structured so that all the topics and subtopics are in one .xpj file, and in one long TOC.
    For example, the TOC:
    Home
    TopicA
    --A1
    ----A1.1
    ----A1.2
    --A2
    ----A2.1
    --A3
    TopicB
    --B_A1
    ----B_A1.1
    ----B_A.2
    What I'd like to do is to have each 1st level subtopic (shown above as A1, A2, B_A1, B_A2 ) open in the same window, but display like a separate, individual doc file with only its own TOC in the Navigation pane (don't know how else to explain it).  In other words, clicking on A1, will open the A1 file and display a TOC only listing:
    A1
    --A1.1
    --A1.2
    I don't want to open a new window.....I'd like it to replace the current window. It'll have the same styles and skin.....just a new separate TOC in the Navigation pane.
    The TOC listed above (1st one) will then be reconfigured to display:
    Home
    TopicA
    --A1
    --A2
    --A3
    TopicB
    --B_A1
    I looked at Merged Help, but I don't think it will work for this.  The examples from Peter's site (thank you very much for these) keep the TOC and don't open new files with a new toc.  I looked at Peter's source files and couldn't find an option that would make something like this possible.  I hope I'm wrong.
    So, my questions are:
    1. Is this structure possible in RoboHelp?
    2.  For Zoom, this means I would probably have to create separate config files, for each "A1 book", then create a categories to search the entire documentation file or just "A1".  This may be a nightmare because then I would have to run the indexer on every single "A1 book"...even if there are 30, and even if that particular file hasn't changed, each time we release a new version.  (I use the javascript zoom option).  Another option is to have 1 search config at the main level and one at each A1 level, without categories. Then the user can search the whole documentation at the main level, but only search sub-topics within the sub-topic.  Still need to think about this one...
    3.  Breadcrumbs....with the new structure, can I configure "Home" to be the one listed in the 2nd TOC (the main toc) ? This means that each Home listed on the sub-topics would refer back to the "main" Home.  If not, then maybe an alternative is to add a Home button to my skin linking back to the main Home file.
    4.  Did I miss any other considerations?
    I hope I explained myself clearly enough!
    TIA!

    Although you're working out of a single RH project, there's nothing to say you can't Generate/Publish specific "books" of content into separate folders, and provide links between those output folders so that users can still go from A2 to B1, for example. You would have to ensure that each of the outputs ended up in specific folders, and you could even include the entire merged output in its own folder, if you felt the need to provide that in addition to each of the tailored outputs. You could provide an initial start page that contained links to each of the tailored outputs.
    You could create separate TOCs (re: breadcrumbs) and layouts for each tailored output, and set them to run in RH batch. Then, of course, you would run Zoom against each of your separate outputs and provide the Zoom files in their related areas (we also use the JavaScript Zoom output).
    As to running many Zoom processes, I currently run Zoom for four product versions on a daily basis, using a series of scheduled batch files. These are scheduled end-of-day, but just before the nightly build process that pulls in our help. Steps 1 and 4 are run because: 1) we have eight writers publishing 42 child projects in a merged WebHelp system; and 2) running Zoom locally is much more efficient than running across the network. Here's our system:
    Synch output from server location to local machine (Karen's Replicator).
    Run Zoom (Zoom Scheduler).
    Clean up zoom_pageinfo.js to remove spaces before commas, periods, etc. (Z-Cron launching FAR batch file).
    Synch Zoom files from local machine back to server location (SyncBack Scheduler).
    You could use whatever utilities you prefer, of course, but I do recommend FAR and the others as being very dependable.
    BTW, step 3 is still necessary to clean up the unwanted spaces in the context description, although the instances are much fewer since RH and Zoom did a bit of cleanup work of their own in their latest versions. My logs indicate fixes in the dozens, rather than the hundreds a few years ago. Of course, if you don't provide the context description in your Search results page, then this step will be unnecessary.
    Good luck,
    Leon

  • Topic not displayed

    Dear all,
    We have a problem with one of our RH projects. As we generate
    the printed documentation, not all information is added to the
    output. Although the correct tags are added to the topic and output
    settings and the topic is added to the TOC, the topic is not
    included in the output.
    The problem is solved after we remove the topic from the TOC
    and add it again. However, as soon as we regenerate the printed
    documentation, the same problem occurs.
    Can you help us out?
    Thanks!
    Liesbet

    Hello Peter,
    Thank you for your message.
    That is indeed the strange thing. If we remove the folder or
    topic and add it again, the topic is indeed added to the output.
    But next time we generate, another topic might not be there. Each
    time that we have generated the output we now need to manually
    check if all topics are actually there...
    Hope this makes it more clear...
    Thanks,
    Liesbet

  • Multiscreen HTML 5 and Synchronizing TOC

    For the desktop screen layout, I want to stop the TOC from synchronizing automatically. We are having an issue when the product links to the Help, if the topic is far down in the TOC, the topic pane appears blank until you scroll back to the top. Anyone have a suggestion on whether it is possible to change the default behavior?

    If you are on RoboHelp 11, try looking into the Responsive layouts.
    You can change this behaviour by modifying the positioning of the sidebar and topic contents. This is quite complex so I would advice looking into the Responsive output.

  • Captivate 7 | need to know "TOC" source

    Hello,
    I need to know the location of the "TOC" source from the Captivate 7 installed in my c-drive.
    Also is it possible to change the "Slide title" on the TOC to "Topic title"
    Regards
    Chandru

    No, Sreekanth, that is for the playbar, not the TOC. The original user asked to change the labels in the TOC, not the default captions AFAIK. But you are correct that I didn't post the right blog post, should have checked better.
    Seem not to find it directly, you have to create another DLL to replace the default one. You were correct, when I first clicked on your link, got another link :

  • Navigation Pane and Topic Pane

    I am new to RoboHelp. I just did a tutorial and feel like I
    understood it. I completed my own project, and it worked fine.
    However, the project I need to work on was begun by someone else at
    the company I work for, and when I access her project via RoboHelp
    XML, it is missing the Project Manager, TOC, Index, etc. in the
    Navigation Pane on the left side, and the Topics Pane on the right
    side only has Wysiwyg and True Code (missing Links and Topics).
    When I go up to Tools and choose Pane, I get three options (Tools,
    TrueCode, and Wysiwyg), and the options I desire aren't there.
    Since the tutorial taught me how to use RoboHelp using those
    missing items, I am lost without them. I am hopeful that someone
    can talk me through getting those back to my screen. Thanks.

    Peter:
    Left-hand view was checkmarked. When I uncheckmarked it, the
    Wysiwyg Editor expanded across the screen, filling it left to
    right, and I entirely lost the pane on the left-hand side which had
    the Tools Tab. So, I put the checkmark back in.
    I do not have the same hard drive as she had. I had to ask
    the IT guys here to install RoboHelp. I would not have the same
    user logon as she had. Would that make a difference? The tutorial I
    did did not address version control (it's more advanced than I am).
    If she had used this feature, would that explain those missing
    items? What about some kind of password protection?
    I tried moving the project to My Computer, but that didn't
    help. The woman I am replacing had stored this project in Visual
    Source Safe as well as on her Shared drive here at the company. I
    can access them "regularly" (meaning not via RoboHelp) in either
    place. I can access the ones on her Shared drive via RoboHelp, but
    that's when I get the version without Project Manager, TOC, Index,
    Topics List, Links, etc. When I try accessing the version that's in
    Visual Source Safe, I can't get in.
    I really appreciating that you are helping me!!!

  • Firefox can't find the file at (a location is specified) when either "Navigate previous" (and next) buttons are pressed in an HTML5 skin (but OK in IE/Chrome).

    I create HTML5 help projects from a package called MadCap Flare. It uses what they call an HTML5 'skin' that sets the style/layout of the page and also includes 'Navigate previous' and 'Navigate next' buttons. When viewing the help and pressing these navigate buttons in IE8 or Chrome 32 there is no problem, but in Firefox 27 I get the following: (typical error for pressing a button on any page)
    "File not found"
    "Firefox can't find the file at /C:/SVN/FlareEnglishOnLineHelp/Output/HTML5_Help_Modeller_Reference/4attrib/idh_jointinterface_element_meshes.htm?TocPath=Modeller Reference Manual|Chapter 5 : Model Attributes|Meshing|_____2."
    " Check the file name for capitalisation or other typing errors."
    " Check to see if the file was moved, renamed or deleted."
    - Because the files and buttons work in other browsers I'm wondering just what is going on here with Firefox>>>>

    I should correct that last entry and state that the | charactacters are generated automatically in the Toc-Path for each 'book' name in the online help, and are not something manually created, whereas the : characters have come from the TOC book topic names (which were manually entered names and are what we would ideally require). But, because 'previous' and 'next' topics within nested TOC books without colon (:) characters CAN be browsed successfully when just | characters are present in the Toc-Path, the limitation would appear to be solely due to the : characters.

  • Using multiple node types with and Extension Handler

    I'm tailoring the example BasicExtensionHandler.jsx provided in the CS4 SDK to fit my file structure needs. Being new to scripting bridge, I have experimented with limited success.
    In a separate script, I have learned how to make a new thumbnail from a URI to be added to my Favorites, and it will add with or without the bridge:fs: prefix.  I am not entirely clear when to use the path instead of the URI. Is the difference between a path and a URI the prefix?
    var t = new Thumbnail("bridge:fs:file:///Users/username/Desktop/2010SampleLibrary/Job1/Graphics/logo1 .ai");
    Using the ExtensionHandler, I understand how to add containers and leafs to create the file heirarchy that want.
    var root = new SDKNode("BERoot", true);
    var sub = new SDKNode("EHFolder1", true)
    root.addNode(sub);
    var sys = new SDKSystem("bridge:beNode:");
    sys.addRoot(root);
    What is the next step for adding the file referenced in the thumbnail of the first script fragment to the node structure referenced in the extension handler of the second script fragment? Do I create a new node with the path or URI specified, and add it as a child to a parent folder? (script presumes that I've properly redefined the SDKNode.jsx to accept the first parameter passed to it as the path)
    var n = new SDKNode ("file:///Users/username/Desktop/2010SampleLibrary/Job1/Graphics/logo1.ai", false);
    d = root.findChildNode("EHFolder2");
    d.addNode(n);
    I suppose this is one of the more elementary problems that everyone here learned during the first day of Computer Science class, but alas, I'm an artist.I understand that the BasicExtensionHandler.jsx does not have any real functionality... I'm addressing that later after I learn the syntax for creating my own virtual file structure that will be populated with select files from a much larger library of files.
    Thanks for the help, samples appreciated.

  • How do you get a merged CHM to open in the same window as the master? (RH8)

    We have a problem where everytime you click on a topic from a merged CHM in the master TOC, it opens a new window exlusive to the chm where the topic resides.  We have more than one master chm and this is the only one that does it, it is also the only one that was created from RH8, although the others have been updated with RH8. We've compared the Window and SS Layout properties with a parent chm that doesn't behave this way and haven't been able to find any differences.  Is there something we can do to have all the topics whether merged or from the parent, open in the same window?

    I think somehow the last time I had this problem I stumbled on a solution and wasn't sure what fixed it, but the problem reared its head again, and it was back to the drawing board. Now I think we have a solution, but we don't know for sure what created the problem. Although we're pretty sure the problem has something to do with creating a new window when there is already and existing window.
    What we found. This problem couldn't be fixed in the SSLayout. We found that the Properties | Advanced | Window setting for individual topics in the TOC had been erased. This Window drop-down selection lets you choose a window other than <Default> if more than one window exists. If not changed by the user, it should stay at <Default>, but somehow the setting was blank on several topics, probably due to the creation of a new window, and maybe some other values being changed. This is probably a bug in RH8, but I don't know about other versions.
    How to fix it.
    First you have to isolate which merged .chm file (child) has the problem, I believe I did this by removing one child .chm at a time from the Parent project and then seeing if the parent .chm worked correctly after generation.
    Once you've found the offending .chm (there may be more than one), open the project and the TOC for the .chm that is a problem.
    Go to the TOC pod > Topic Page Properties (right-click on a Topic in the TOC and select Properties) > Advanced > Options panel and ensure that a value exists in the Window: field. If the field is empty, you have a problem.  Click the drop-down and select <Default>, even if your .chm window displays in drop-down.
    I don't believe there's an option to set a window as the default when you create it, so if there's more than one window, who knows what the <Default> option is drawing from, unless <Default> points to the window you have selected in the SSLayout, which I think is the case.
    Find all Topics that have this problem and fix them.  Note: you cannot fix this by going to topic Properties in the Topic List (or from r-click Properties in a topic), you have to do it in the TOC.
    Save all changes, generate the child .chm, and then replace the old child .chm with the new one.
    Open the parent .chm and check to see if all topics open in the parent window. Your Done

  • File Path contains the token "bc-"

    We recently upgraded to the RoboHelp version 9 and are finding a critical problem within all generated html files. It seems RoboHelp is inserting a new script in every html file which we would like to either modify or remove. The snippet of this script is given below.
    Our problem is that we have stored these files in a path that has this token “bc-“ - C:\projects\{705e5340-460b-11e1-b8bc-0800200c9a66}.
    We need your help to either modify this token or remove this check from all project files.
    SNIPPET:
    ========
    if (window.gbWhTopic)
      var strUrl = document.location.href;
      var bc = 0;
      var n = strUrl.toLowerCase().indexOf("bc-");
      if(n != -1)
      document.location.href = strUrl.substring(0, n);
      bc = strUrl.substring(n+3);

    Hi,
    Peter and I have been looking into this problem and here's what we found:
    RH sometimes adds bookmarks in the top of topics called “bc-x” This is done because a topic can be used in the TOC multiple times. But based on the item selected in the TOC, the topic needs display a different breadcrumb path. The script uses a link to the bc-x bookmark to determine which breadcrumb path to show.
    When the topic is opened without the skin showing, the script will try to reload the topic by simply removing the link to the bc- bookmark:
    http://example.com/myfile.htm#bc-1
    becomes:
    http://example.com/myfile.htm#
    The script doesn't try to redirect when you open the topic with the skin showing, such as: startpage.htm#target.htm#bc-1
    Af far as I can make out, I think it will be safe to simple remove the line
         document.location.href = strUrl.substring(0, n);
    from your output. Although I couldn't find another use for this besides the breadrumbs, I can't say for sure what other impact removing the line may have. You can try removing the line to see whether it works. NOTE: if you find a new issue that surfaces because you removed the line, I doubt that anyone on the forum will be able to help. Sorry, but we are only users like yourself.
    Having said that, you can use a find and replace tool such as FAR to quickly remove the above mentioned line from your output files. Alternatively, you can create a script to do that for you.
    I think Peter's advice is sound: do take this up with Adobe Technical Support and/or report this as a bug: https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform&product=38
