Too Much Inactive Memory Useage

Hi,
I have a 2010 iMac running Mac OS X version 10.7.5.
I have upgraded to 16GB Ram but still have serious issues with the computer running slow sometimes are almost stopping because the memory usage seems to be too high.
I run quiet a few applications (mainly web browsers with multiple tabs). The main issue I see is the Inactive Memory is over 5GB. Is there a reason why this is so high? Is there a way to reduce the Inactive Memory?
Restarting the machine is a short term solution.
Thanks

  • Karnel task taking too much Real Memory & Battery not lasting long.

    Hello,
    I've noticed under my Activity Monitor that Karnel_Task is taking too much "real memory".
    Also, I just bought a new battery because the original that came with my computer was dying too fast.
    Well, this new one lasts just a little longer. I believe that is something else that is eating up the battery.
    I have a Macbook Pro 13' early 2011.
    4 GB at the Moment.
    Running Mountain Lion.
    Processor  2.3 GHz Intel Core i5
    Memory  4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
    Graphics  Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB
    Serial Number  C17F4LJHDH2G
    Software  OS X 10.8.5 (12F45)
    Here is my Etre Check as well. I need help figuring out what is wrong with my laptop and what to do to fix it please.

  • Too Much Inactive RAM, Too Little Free RAM

    I used to have a 2007 iMac running Snow Leopard, and I switched to a 2011 iMac running Mountain Lion. On both of my computers, I kept running out of free RAM after a while, and my inactive RAM kept taking up all my free RAM. It still does it. I end up with around 30MB of free RAM, a reasonable amount of active RAM, and a massive amount of inactive RAM after a few days, then my computer slows down a lot.
    I have to keep flushing the inactive RAM with a memory cleaning tool or else my computer slows to a crawl. Repairing the permissions is supposed to clean out the inactive RAM (thanks, Tuttle), but alarmingly, this doesn't work for me. There must be something causing this problem, and I want to find it. How do I do this? Can processes currently running be using inactive RAM, or is that only possible if they have just been closed? Is there a tool that can check how much inactive RAM is allocated to each process?
    P.S. To make it clear: I know that I'm not supposed to worry about inactive RAM and let the system do its own optimization, but it must not be doing it right because it's causing extremely noticeable slowdowns. The computer is like a Geo Metro pulling a whale if I don't flush the inactive RAM periodically.

    Since you are so concerned, take your iMac to your local AS or an AASP for a FREE diagnostic test.  At least you will have piece of mind when you get a confirmation of what is really going on.

  • WHY DO I HAVE SO MUCH ' INACTIVE ' MEMORY?????

    i was just looking at the activity monitor seeing how much memory my applications were using up and i noticed a hugeee amount of inactive memory...
    at the time i had thses applications running:
    toast titanium PowerPC
    azureus Intel
    msn messenger PowerPC
    and only 2 wigets Intel
    the activity monitor showed (ish) 101mb wired
    436mb active
    471mb INACTIVE
    30mb free
    why is nearly half of my memory inactive??? how can i free this up?
    thanks.

    Inactive memory is memory previously being used up. Mac OS X uses a lot of RAM to its stunning, "always remembering what you did last," advantage. If you previously had Mail open, some RAM is used up. When you quit Mail, whatever you were doing last is stored in that Inactive (previously used) RAM. If you need the RAM (for another application), Mac OS will take from the Inactive RAM, if need be. There's absolutely nothing to worry about, it's 100% normal.

  • Oc4j connection pool: too much INACTIVE connections

    I am publishing an application - developed using Eclipse and previously published in Tomcat (where it works perfectly for a long time) - within corporate servers using Oc4j version 10.1.3. The database server is Oracle 9g.
    After the deployment operation, the application seems to work, but that happens during the work by users, there are still many connections whith status "INACTIVE", until to complete all the available connections.
    The datasource is set as follows:
    <connection-pool name="ConnectionPoolRichiestaPubblicazione">
    <connection-factory factory-class="oracle.jdbc.pool.OracleDataSource"
    user="REDAZIONE"
    password="password"
    url="jdbc:oracle:thin:@(DESCRIPTION=(FAILOVER=ON)
         (ADDRESS_LIST=(LOAD_BALANCE=ON)
         (ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)
         (HOST=10.146.2.86)(PORT=1521))
         (ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST=10.146.2.86)(PORT=1521)))
         (CONNECT_DATA=
    (SERVER=DEDICATED)
    (SERVICE_NAME=XE)
    (FAILOVER_MODE=(TYPE=SELECT)(METHOD=BASIC)(RETRIES=180)(DELAY=5))))">
    </connection-factory>
    </connection-pool>
    <managed-data-source
    jndi-name="jdbc/RichiestaPubblicazioneDS"
    name="RichiestaPubblicazioneDS"
    connection-pool-name="ConnectionPoolRichiestaPubblicazione" />
    The java code to establish a connection is as follows:
    private Connection creaConnessioneDataSource(String nomedatasource) throws ConnessioneException{
              LOGGER.debug("START");
              try {
                   InitialContext context = new InitialContext();
                   DataSource ds = (DataSource)context.lookup(nomedatasource);
                   LOGGER.debug("URL DATASOURCE : " + ds.getConnection().getMetaData().getURL());
                   LOGGER.debug("USERNAME : " + ds.getConnection().getMetaData().getUserName());
                   this.conn = ds.getConnection();
              catch( Exception e ) {
                   LOGGER.error("Errore nella connessione tramite datasource : " + StringUtils.getCustomStackTrace(e));
              LOGGER.debug("END");
              return this.conn;
    Connections and statements are closed using the following methods:
         public boolean chiudi(Connection conn){
              LOGGER.debug("START");
              boolean esito = false;
              if (conn != null){
                   try {
                        conn.close();
                        esito = true;
                        LOGGER.debug("Connessione chiusa");
                   catch (SQLException e) {
                        LOGGER.error("Eccezione nella chiusura della connessione : " + e);
              LOGGER.debug("END");
              return esito;
         public boolean chiudi(Statement stmt){
              LOGGER.debug("START");
              boolean esito = false;
              if (stmt != null){
                   try {
                        stmt.close();
                        esito = true;
                        LOGGER.debug("Statement chiuso");
                   } catch (SQLException e) {
                        LOGGER.error("Eccezione nella chiusura dello statement : " + e);
                        e.printStackTrace();
              LOGGER.debug("END");
              return esito;
    Here are a couple of examples of code that interact with the database:
         public List<StatoRichiestaSintesi> getElencoStatiRichieste() throws ConnessioneException{
              LOGGER.debug("START");
              List<StatoRichiestaSintesi> listaStati=new LinkedList<StatoRichiestaSintesi>();
              LOGGER.debug("Apriamo connessione e statement");

              LOGGER.debug("Dichiaro un oggetto di tipo preparedstatement");
              PreparedStatement stmt = null;

                   stmt.setString(2, idprogetto);
                   LOGGER.debug("Eseguo la query di inserimento del progetto");
                   stmt.executeUpdate();
              } catch (SQLException e) {
                   LOGGER.error("Eccezione di tipo SQL : " + StringUtils.getCustomStackTrace(e));
              finally {
                   LOGGER.debug("Chiusura di statement e connessione");
                   databaseManager.chiudi(stmt);
                   databaseManager.chiudi(conn);
              LOGGER.debug("END");
         Which may be the cause for the described behavior?
         I hope someone help me..

    My problem is the following.
    If I deploy my application with the illustred datasource in my local OC4J (10.1.3 in a Standalone Environment) all work fine.
    The application creates a reasonable number of connections (in ORACLE - 10g Enterprise Edition Release 10.2.0.4.0 - db I run the query verification "select count(*) from v$session where username='MYAPPLICATION'"), and overall performance is very good.
    If, however, to deploy on the production machine of corporate (always 10.1.3, but obviously in Oracle Application Server Environment) the
    number of connections (status 'INACTIVE') grows massively, and this is saturated in a short time.
    The exception that at the end from the application is that:
    java.sql.SQLException: ORA-01034: ORACLE not available
    ORA-27101: shared memory realm does not exist

  • Dashboard using too much ram memory

    Whenever I use the dashboard, after a couple of minutes it starts consuming more than 1GB of RAM memory, so that it doesn't let me work. I have to force quit the Dashboard... The mac is almost new. Any solution?

    I have tried to analize better what happens. In the dashboard I only have a calendar, a calculator, a clock and one postit (but there is nothing writen on it). If I use something in the dashboard, for example, the calculator, and I do some multiplications, after a couple of minutes the use of memory of the dashboard starts to increase. I closed any other program and in some minutes I have sen how it increased until I stopped the process when it was using more than 2GB! (you can see it in the picture). It's very strange! (Thank you very much for your help!)

  • How do I keep Mail on my Mac Mini from using way too much system memory?

    Mail is using 1.27G of system memory.  I have selected "Don't keep copies of any messages" under Preferences>>Accounts>>Advanced.  Is there some cache that needs to be cleared?  I realize that I have a LOT of messages on the server but it seems like they shouldn't be stored locally on the mac.  Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Peter

    I did get rid of the antivirus software which is why I am where I am now

  • Can too much memory lead to a kernel panic on a MacBook Pro? specs 2.4GHz intel core i7 16GB DDR3 RAM   late2011..My laptop began suffering from kernel panics 3 mos ago first noticed using public wifi. Gone thru apple support all the way to engineers

    Can too much RAM memory in a late 2011 model macbook pro lead to kernel panic? That is what I was told by a senior supervisor from apple support who troubleshot this issue.First noticed this problem in Dec 2014 while using a private wifi at a relative's home. Did not occur again until Feb1 using a public wifi at a hotel. Never happened on my private wifi network until last night  attempting to use airplay. ( have used airplay before without issue). Late 2011 MacBook Pro running 10.9.5; 2.4 GHz Intel core i7, 16 GB DDR3,AMD Radeon HD 6770m 1024 MB graphic card.  The laptop came with 8GB RAM and I installed 8 GB about 2 years ago for some reason I cannot remember... probably because I thought the system was slowing down a little. I know that sounds silly. I do not run multiple programs at a time except I leave 6-8 website tabs open simultaneously. I don't photo or video edit.  I would describe my use as "light"  based on reading these blogs.I had purchased apple support and spent hours on the phone with them in early Feb moving up through support  and senior support to sending logs to the "engineers." Of course lots of things were done some of which I am sorry to report I cannot recall their technical definitions. Deleted  3rd party apps/programs; re-worked start up menu; re-installed operating system; reset " this, that and the other" using acrobatic simultaneous key strokes both in and out of safe mode..Anyway the results from the engineers came back and they suggested that if it happened again I was to remove the 8GB of RAM I had installed as the system was getting confused as to which chip to use.( that is my interpretation of what was said..prob dumbed down for me)...Anyway 1 day after these pronouncements came down I read that Apple had agreed to fix  graphics cards in some late model 2011 MBPs. I felt this was unlikely to be the issue  given all that had been done including an extended hardware test but called the Senior Support Supervisor I was working with to ask him to make sure. He never phoned me back. Should I go to the trouble of removing 8GB of RAM from my laptop? Of course I will try it as the alternative is a new computer.Blogs read that this model can support 16GB but Apple didn't test for it. Senior Supervisor claims this is my trouble.  Does that make sense?  Not to me....but it is clear to all my level of knowledge.  Can a malfunctioning graphics card be missed by an extended hardware test? I appreciate comments.

  • My MacBook pro 2012 Mountain Loin 8.2 don't clear the inactive memory automatically when memory needed for other program so I get page outs.

    My MacBook Pro 2012 Mountain Loin 8.2 doesn't clear the inactive memory automatically when memory needed for other program so I get page outs. There are much inactive memory when page outs. Why my mac does this?

    That's completely normal. If other programs require memory then the system will reallocate Inactive RAM as needed. Page Outs don't mean anything.

    Understanding top output in the Terminal
    The amount of available RAM for applications is the sum of Free RAM and Inactive RAM. This will change as applications are opened and closed or change from active to inactive status. The Swap figure represents an estimate of the total amount of swap space required for VM if used, but does not necessarily indicate the actual size of the existing swap file. If you are really in need of more RAM that would be indicated by how frequently the system uses VM. If you open the Terminal and run the top command at the prompt you will find information reported on Pageins () and Pageouts (). Pageouts () is the important figure. If the value in the parentheses is 0 (zero) then OS X is not making instantaneous use of VM which means you have adequate physical RAM for the system with the applications you have loaded. If the figure in parentheses is running positive and your hard drive is constantly being used (thrashing) then you need more physical RAM.
    Adding RAM only makes it possible to run more programs concurrently.  It doesn't speed up the computer nor make games run faster.  What it can do is prevent the system from having to use disk-based VM when it runs out of RAM because you are trying to run too many applications concurrently or using applications that are extremely RAM dependent.  It will improve the performance of applications that run mostly in RAM or when loading programs.

  • Inactive memory - I want to clear it.

    I have a 2010 macbook pro with 6 gigs of RAM.
    WHAT I KNOW: that inactive memory is the "same" as active memory; that inactive memory is basically cached information that can quickly be replaced when needed; that the system automatically regulates inactive and active memory.
    Well that´s peachy, but it still causes problems.
    THE SITUATION: I am a graphic designer, which means that I use photoshop a lot. Part of my job is the creation of gigantic publicity images which take up a lot of ram memory.
    Lets suppose I make giant image A, save it, and then I close it. I make giant image B, save it, and close it. I make giant image C, save it, and close it. At this point, I have all my free memory taken up, and only have inactive memory left. Well, when I go to open up giant image A, it takes forever to load (10 to 20 minutes) and the computer slows to a crawl - even though there are no images or any other memory sucking programs open.
    Or lets say that I have giant image A open, but I need to open giant image B and C. Same problem. Since I have no free memory, the system slows to a crawl. What has been my remedy? Force close photoshop, and reopen it. Upon doing this I have a ton of free memory, I can open images A, B, and/or C at the same time and they load at lightning speed (1 to 2 minutes, versus the 10 to 20 minute wait when my computer is relying on inactive memory).
    WHAT I NEED: It is easy to say that this is all Adobe´s fault, or that the system´s regulation of memory is vastly superior to Windows, but that isn´t going to help me. What I need is an application, or technique where I can clear as much inactive memory as possible.
    This is not a circumstance where I don´t understand what´s happening. I upgraded from 4 gigs of RAM to 6, and while the upgrade has helped it is only relieving a symptom of the problem and not the cause. In my line of work, I need to be able to work quickly and not have to rely on whether my system knows when to replace cached information.

    I didn´t upgrade to 8 gigs of ram because I have an imac from 2007 with 4 gigs that does just fine. I needed a laptop and so decided on the macbook pro. As the macbook is newer, I imagined that it would go faster. I didn´t take into account that the new 10.6 system would need more memory, and that Adobe CS 5 would need much more memory than Adobe CS 4 - so I upgraded the memory a bit to make up for the difference.
    I could buy even MORE memory, but it isn´t reasonable that a computer that´s 3 years old should be faster than the newest model professional laptop with the newest system and the newest applications. What´s more, I do not NEED more memory as the images I need to edit load very quickly whenever I free up inactive memory by force quitting photoshop. The fact that the images load quickly when there´s free memory, and slowly when there´s only inactive memory is proof that the RAM memory regulation is ineffective.
    I do admit that this problem only occurs when I am creating large high quality images, and that memory regulation is not an issue 70% of the time. BUT since I´ve spent the last 2 weeks working on high quality images that measure 3x3 meters, I need a solution that will allow me to free up inactive memory.

  • Firefox consumes too much RAM, caused by js

    I'm having problems with Firefox consuming too much RAM memory. Several people are complaining about this but I did some further research before posting here, using about:memory, and I found out that js-non-window and js-main-runtime are causing this.
    When I start up a blank Firefox session I immediately have an allocation of 260MB of RAM. About 75-80% of this is taken up by those two js (javascript?) processes.
    After opening about 10 tabs with different webpages the RAM usage has gone up to about 750MB. During the time the tabs are open most of the extra MB's are consumed by the window-objects (40MB per page, still seems quite a lot to me for just a news site with one article...) but after closing them the memory usage didn't go down and it transferred to the two already mentioned js processes. This transfer to the js processes is not always the case, it seems to happen only if I open a lot of tabs, let's say 10+ perhaps.
    I tried disabling Javascript using the plugin SettingSanity, but this makes browsing quite uncomfortable of course and worst of all it doesn't solve the problem. The mentioned processes keep using the same amount of RAM.
    I have this exact same problem on all my computers and laptops so it can't be a coincidence. Is there nothing I can do about this? Is this under investigation? How can a browser with 10 web pages open need almost 800MB of RAM?
    And please don't answer "install more RAM". The pc I have most problems with has 2GB of physical RAM and I really do think that opening 10 web pages should be possible on such a computer. Doing the same in Internet Explorer consumes less than half the amount of RAM memory.
    P.S: I sent this query using IE because I could't get to this page in Firefox. The "Ask This" button didn't work...

    Try in Firefox's safe mode disable all plugins, and open with only a new tab set by using ''about:blank'' . As suggested above also consider as a test creating and using a new Firefox profile.
    When I start like that I have around 70MB explicit shown in ''about:memory'' and that includes ''js-non-window'' of around 30MB
    I know in the past I have opened more than 10 tabs on a machine with less than 1GB ram installed and not noticed problems.
