Top and stuck processes

Once in a while my server won't wake up the display after sleeping it. I'm left with a black screen and no way to use the system.
If I log in with SSH from another Mac on the LAN, everything seems fine, except that top reports that 1 process is "stuck." But it won't tell me which one! Isn't there some way to identify the stuck process and kill it?
Also, issuing a reboot command remotely doesn't work. The server screen wakes up (displaying the screen saver image) but sits there forever with the little "gear" thingie going round and round.

Hi Robert,
You can use the following command to view all processes:
ps -auxww
In the STAT column is the state of the process. An explanation of the letters in that field can be found in the ps man page. From "man ps":I   Marks a process that is idle (sleeping for longer than about 20 seconds).
R   Marks a runnable process.
S   Marks a process that is sleeping for less than about 20 seconds.
T   Marks a stopped process.
U   Marks a process in uninterruptible wait.
Z   Marks a dead process (a ``zombie'').   You don't put the whole system to sleep, do you? If you do, it shouldn't even be able to serve anything. Don't put a server to sleep. You can sleep the display but I don't recommend even spinning down the drives.
If you are talking about the display, that's doubtless just a symptom. Without knowing the processes having problems, it isn't possible to know what is wrong. Of course even a listing might not be sufficient to know what's going wrong but it's probably necessary.

  • Stuck processes indicating hard disk problems?

I have had trouble with "stuck processes" on my mini 10.5.3 server since it crashed after a Retrospect back up a month ago and found an interesting piece of data this am:
Using a recycled usb connected hard drive connected to the mini server, Retrospect running on the mini was able to back up its own hard drive at only 18 mb/min while it was able to back-up a remote wired ethernet connected intel iMac hard drive with 160GB at 350mb/min to the same usb device on the mini. Odd!
The disk on the mini passed all the tests I was able to run on it with DIsk Utility.
The unix command "top" shows stuck processes sometimes climbing to 30 or more before dropping back down again. When the # of stuck processes climbed, the back-up of the mini's own hard drive would freeze, but it had no effect on the backup of the ethernet connected device.
Seems to suggest that there is a problem with the mini's internal hard drive. It is less than a year old so it is still under warranty. I am not eager to take the server down unless I have to. Log files have not been helpful. No unusual data has been written to the files during freezes. Is there a piece of software out there that will allow me to do a more thorough test of the drive? I am not sure how to proceed. Any help would be welcome.

    You are welcome.
Here is a guide that will tell you the difference in the Blue and the Black models of WD's hard drives.  Either will work fine in your computer.  The major difference is warranty and price.  Although, the Black would give you more performance.

    Hi Drgeert-
The hub may not be broken per se, but Apple has made adjustments to the limits on current that can be drawn from ports.
You probably need a new hub.

  • Downloading app and music on MacBook Pro - stuck processing

    Hey Guys,
I went into my itunes like usual it started downloading my app purchases that I made on my iPhone. But as it was downloading, it got stuck processing one particular app. I thought it was just overloaded since it was downloading some songs as well, so I left it alone for a few hours. Come back and its still stuck on that one app, and two songs, all saying processing. I tried to pause the download, I tried to delete the app, I tried turning off my wifi to see if it would automatically pause, nothing worked.
Open to any suggestions or tips, because I honestly have not a clue about how to fix it.
I currently am running the newest verison of itunes (11.0.4), which I just put on today, which is making me think that could be the cause.
    Really appriciate the help!
    Juliana

It would help if you were much more informative. Describe in better detail just what is happening. Also tell us the steps that you have taken to try to resolve this yourself.

    Hello jose mariofromsan luis potosi,
I apologize, I'm a bit unclear on the exact nature of the issue you are describing. If you are saying that your iOS devices are not showing up in iTunes on your Windows computer, you may find the troubleshooting steps outlined in the following article helpful:
iPhone, iPad, or iPod not recognized in iTunes for Windows - Apple Support
On the other hand, if you are saying that your devices are only showing a Connect To iTunes icon screen, then this article may be more useful:

Shouldn't take more than a few seconds to a minute.  If it's stuck, you might want to give Apple support a call to see if they are experiencing unreported server issues.  Since your device is new, you are within the 90-day free call support period.  You can set up the call here: http://www.apple.com/support/icloud/contact/.  You will need your serial number, which is on the box and (I believe) the back of your iPad.

  • I plugged my macbook pro into an external monitor, then unplugged it later and now it is stuck with black borders on top and bottom and zoomed out like it is still on the monitor. How do I fix it?

I started using my external monitor with my macbook pro and as soon as I plug it in it to the monitor it adjusts the screen by zooming out a bit and creating about 3/4 of an inch black borders on the top and bottom of the screen. But these dont show up on the monitor so I assumed it was fine. But when I took it off the monitor, the borders were still there like it was still on the monitor. Any hellp? Its starting to mess with my eyes haha.

    Hi aefulcher,
It sounds like you had the external display set to mirror the internal display so the resolution(s) were changed to match each other.

  • Broken disks and stuck in restart

My dad set up our tv as a monitor for our family computer. My little brother shoved multiple disks in the slot and now it's stuck in permanent revving. To add insult to injury, when I tried to restart the computer, it doesn't load and the revving still won't stop. Right now there is a loading bar beneath the apple insignia, but it just turned off unsuccessfully. Please help.

Oh crud..... sounds like you have a problem.
If your family computer is a tower type Mac Pro, I can help you with that. If it's a portable MacBook or something like that, and your little brother shoved too many disks in the slot, you might want to think about taking it in to your local Apple store (and keeping your little brother away from the computer (just sayin'). For the Mac pro, first shut it down and wait until it cools, then take off the side panel. the cd/dvd drive should be at the top, and should be able to be pulled out. Using a #1 or #0 phillips screwdriver, remove the cd/dvd drive from the sled, and disconnect the power and data cables from the back, you should now be able to take the top cover off of the drive itself and extract the discs from the drive.  Reverse the process, reconnect the power and data cables and slide the sled back in. Make sure the cable isn't pinched or blocked somehow. It should slide in all the way, then put the side cover back on, push the latch down, and restart your Mac pro.  If you have a portable? I dunno. I'm no expert here. Maybe a thin stick with some double sided tape on it, so's you can snag the disk enough to get it out.
if you can, just unplug your mac and shut 'er down, then check on youtube to maybe get a few ideas on how to get those darn discs out of there. I think you may have to reset the smc or PMU. check apple's support section for your particular kind of Mac(which I'm guessing is a portable one) for how to do it exactly. Otherwise...well...take 'er in, and change the access privileges on your little brother's account. I think there's a way so's that can not access a cd/ dvd. If that helps (which I don't think it does)
sorry to hear about your problem. I don't know what else to suggest apart from the previous, or getting a cheap dvd player at Walmart/Target

  • Stuck processes all over the place..

Hi all.. We had a power failure last weekend due to a mylar balloon taking out a power-pole in the backyard of a neighbors house.. Anyway, after the power came back on our Mac Mini server is exhibiting some odd issues -- after <24 hours most processes take FOREVER to start and if you run top from a console window you'll see many indicating "stuck" for the process state -- things like iWork 'pages' will get stuck for minutes on end before they finally come up..
I've not yet run a disk-check but this seems plausible.. I checked the system logs but didn't see anything obvious.. When a reboot is done it works OK for a number of hours..
Any ideas? I'll be doing a full-disk check this evening..

I'd go with a direct-connected disk for the immediate case (though a link to an example of doing a remote database backup is included below) as I'd be looking to get a whole-disk backup, and not (for this case) a backup of a running system.
    Here's how...
Load the installer DVD into an external USB drive connected to the Mac Mini Server. Connect an external USB or FireWire disk of sufficient capacity for your data. Reboot, holding the C key down during the boot process, at least until you see the spinner. Select your language from the installer DVD, and get to the second screen of the installation. Select the Utilities menu at the top, and select Disk Utility, and select Restore and then select the drive you want to back up in the left column and select Create A New Disk Image, and select a target device.
If you have a second FireWire Mac available (and a FireWire cable), then you can use a wholly different approach and use Target Disk Mode, and treat the Mac Mini Server as an external FireWire disk of the second Mac, and perform the backup using the second Mac and whatever storage it might have. To select Target Disk Mode, shut down and select the T key during the same part of the boot sequence.
Here are [Mac Shortcut Keys (HT1343)|http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1343], including a list of the boot-time (startup) key shortcuts such as T and C mentioned above.
Probably more than you want to deal with right now but following on your longer-term request for getting a backup, but [here is how to use mysqldump|http://labs.hoffmanlabs.com/node/1336] to get a backup of an active MySQL database. (This is the stuff that Time Machine doesn't do well on, and where you need to use something like an offline DU backup above, or (for specific databases) a mysqldump of the database. This particular mysqldump will transfer the files over to a separate AFP disk server or Time Capsule disk. And this bash could be modified to copy the database archive over to other target disk structures.

  • How do I get rid of the Microsoft Setup Assistant loop? I migrated my software/documents from another laptop so don't have the disk to reinstall. Please help! Can't open any Microsoft Office software, like Word, and stuck in a loop?

I migrated my software/documents from another laptop so don't have the disk to reinstall. Please help! Can't open any Microsoft Office software, like Word (for 2008), and stuck in a loop?
Whenever I select Word Microsoft Setup Assistant appears, asks for feedback, then after selecting okay (both on saying yes or no to feedback) goes on to a registration page. When I click on this it says I've already registered so I just click okay, and then move on to a update page. After this, if I click on Word, the process repeats itself.
As I said, I don't have the disk to reinstall, and can't find the Office Settings to delete as many pages have suggested I should try. Safe Boot restarting also hasn't worked... Really stuck and need Word very soon for work.
If you can help, that would be great, and feel free to ask any questions about the situation as I'm not an expert here.
    Cheers,
    Jack

First, export your contact from iCloud.com and save them on your computer in a safe spot some where (like you desktop).  Use this to help you do this: http://support.apple.com/kb/PH3606
Next, on both of your devices, go to Settings > iCloud and turn on contacts and select Merge. Then turn off contacts and select 'Delete form my [device]' when prompted.
Now go back to iCloud.com and select a contact (yes they will all be messed up again) and select Command+A on a Mac or Control+A on a PC to select all of the contacts.  Tap the delete key on your keyboard (or right click /control click a contact and select delete).
You iPhone, iPad and iCloud.com should not be empty for contacts.
Go back to Settings > iCloud on both devices and turn on contacts again (you should not see merge this time).
Next, go back to iCloud.com and import your contacts (those exported .vcards).  You can either drag and drop them into the empty contacts list in your web browser, or you can use the gear icon to import.
You cleaned up contacts should import correctly into iCloud.com and sync to both of your devices.
    Good luck.

  • Set top and bottom inset spacing values in Text Frame Options via jsx script

I am looking for a way to set the top and bottom inset spacing values only to 2 points in Text Frame Options via a .jsx scrpt.
For years, I have used a script that sets Preferences, such as:
    with(app.storyPreferences){
        opticalMarginAlignment = false;
        opticalMarginSize = 12;                // pts
I would like to add the code to this same script that would make Top = 0p2 and Bottom 0p2 but leave Left and Right as 0p0.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Here is the full .jsx file that we now use to set preferences.
Ideally, this could be modified to include setting any text frame created to have 0p2 inset Top and Bottom, but 0p0 Left and Right:

    //An InDesign CS2 JavaScript
//Sets the application text defaults, which will become the text defaults for all

  • I upgraded my 3rd generation ipad to ios 6.0.1 and now am experiencing various issues.  Neither Pages or Numbers will open.  I just see a gray screen that says Pages or Numbers at the top and all of my documents are gone.

I upgraded my "new ipad" (the 3rd generation I think) to ios 6.0.1 and now am experiencing various issues.
1- Neither Pages or Numbers will open.  I just see a gray screen that says Pages or Numbers at the top and all of my documents are gone. The icon that allows me to create a new document also does not appear.  I went to icloud.com to see whether my documents still existed, which brings me to the 2nd problem.
2- It appears that all of my Pages documents are still on icloud, but all of my Numbers documents are gone.  There were only about 10, but I access 2 of them nearly every day, so this is a big issue for me.
I went into Settings and all of the icloud information is correct and it "Documents & Data" is on.  When I look at the storage, I see the Pages documents but not the Numbers ones.  The next thing I did was turn my ipad off and back on, but this didn't fix anything.  Since my Pages documents are still on icloud, I then tried to delete the Pages app from the ipad so that I could reinstall it, which resulted in the 3rd problem.
3- I cannot delete any apps.  I can get all of the icons to shake and the small x IS available, but everything freezes when I click it.  I can't do anything at that point except reset the ipad or wait until it eventually restarts itself.  I've tried this with Pages as well as multiple other apps, all with the same result.  I've also tried downloading a new app (which worked fine) and then deleting that one, but I got the same result.
3a- A small related issue to this that I am far less concerned about is that when the ipad restarts itself, it comes back on and the screen is really dark and I can barely make out what appears on the screen.  If I enter my password right away, it stays that way until I go into Settings - Brightness & Wallpaper and touch the brightness setting (although I'm not actually changing the setting because it already shows that the brightness is turned up a little over halfway).  If I don't enter my password right away and let it go completely dark, then click the home button, the brightness is fine.
So now I'm stuck.  My guess is that I will need to restore it, but wanted to check before I take that step.  Unfortunately, my laptop is on its deathbed so I haven't been synching my ipad to it and I fear my Numbers documents are gone forever.  I'd like to try everything I can to fix these issues before doing the restore in hopes that I can get the Numbers documents back.
Any suggestions for any or all of these problems?

I do backup with iCloud.  I can't wait until the new iMac is available so that I can once again have my files in more than 1 location without needing to rely solely on the cloud.
I also rely on iTunes and my MacBook and Time Machine as well as backing up to iCloud. I know many users know have gone totally PC free, but I chose to use iCloud merely as my third backup.
I assume that the restore would result in my ability to open Pages and Numbers and fix the problem with deleting apps, but this would also mean that if my Numbers documents still exist solely within the app and are just not on iCloud for some reason that they would be gone forever.  Is that right?
In a word, yes. In a little more detail.... When you restore from an iCloud backup, you must erase the device and start all over again. There is no other way to access the backup in iCloud without erasing the device. Consequently, you are starting all over again. Therefore, it would also be my assumption that Pages and Numbers will work again and that the deleting apps issues would be fixed as well.
If the documents are not in the backup, and you do not have a backup elsewhere, the documents could be gone forever.

  • When I close out a website it goes to my desk top and then tells me firefox is running and I have to shut down the system

when I close out a website it goes to my desk top and then tells me firefox is already running and I have to shut down my system and bring it back up and wait to log back in. It's quite frustrating.

Try Ctrl>ALT>DEL then click Start Task Manager, then find the process firefox.exe, then click end program, then try opening Firefox again. <!-- click applications > new task.... > explorer.exe --> done! If that doesn't work, then try re-installing Firefox or going to this link to safe mode area and click continue to safe mode and then try and exit, if this problem still occurs then disable extensions and plugins

  • How can I print the top and bottom halves of 11x17 PDF on 8.5x11?

I have a multi-page 11x17 PDF of quiz cards designed to be printed double-sided so that a question appears on one side and the answer on the other side. (Page 1 has the questions; page 2 has the answers.)  My printer is 8.5x11 so I would like to print the top half of 11x17 page 1 onto 8.5x11 page 1 and the bottom half of 11x17 page 1 onto 8.5x11 page 2. Then I will flip the 8.5x11 pages over and repeat the process, this time printing 11x17 page 2.
Is there a way to print the top and bottom halves of an 11x17 PDF onto two 8.5x11 pages?
    Thanks!

The easiest solution I know of requires you to have a copy of Adobe InDesign. You can easily layout PDFs within InDesign in the configuration you want and create a new PDF.
I don't know any way to print it directly in that layout, unfortunately.
