Top CPU, MEM, I/O commands
Hi friendships,
Can I ask the ff questions? :)
1. What command in linux that will show or list the TOP 10 CPU usage? I mean those PID that eats a lot of CPUs.
2. What command in linux that will show or list the TOP 10 MEM usage? I mean those PID that eats a lot of Memory.
3. What command in linux that will show the actual total memory used? For example, I have 20Gb memory, how
much of the 20Gb is free or used-up.
4. What command in linux that will show how high the DISK O/I on each disk? Is it possible to identify what PID
is causing the high disk I/O?
Thanks a lot in advance.

K7nd2 delta - cpu & mem upgrade?
hi all
thinking of upgrading my k7nd2 delta cpu & mem. right now i have a 2800+ cpu and corsair 1gig twin 2700-333 mem. the new memory i want to get is " Geil Ultra Series Value Dual Channel 184 Pin 2GB(2x 1GB) DDR PC-3200" and of course upgrade the cpu to 3200+. i can afford 1 of the 2 right now, so would it be best to get the memory 1st, and will the new memory work with my 2800+ exist'g cpu?? or should i upgrade to the 3200+ cpu and keep the older slower memory??
thanks for any help.
riderNever again would i use three memory sticks in an nforce2 motherboard.
i already managed to kill two by doing so.
so that's a no-no.
and yeah geil make awesome ram, iv'e been using geil since my first ddr system and never been disappointed
if memory timings are an important thing to you [if you're a gamer and would kill for every 3dmark point] you should check their Golden Dragon Dual Channel Kit series, they're just awesome. the SPD for dual channel 400mhz is 2-3-2-6 if i'm not mistaken on them, but they can do 2-2-2-5 without problems.
or if you don't mind timings THAT much, check out the Value Dual Channel Kit series, SPD timings for dual channel 400mhz is 2.5-4-4-8, and these sticks are known to push 240+mhz on just about any overclock attempt. -
TOP CPU Sessions for 10hr period
I need list of top CPU sessions for a period of 10 hrs. I see CPU is the top wait event in my AWR reports. Getting above information from AWR is complex. Is their a history views where I can get this information easily?
Regards,
SivaI don't know if I understand your requirement correctly, but I think you have a section in the AWR report where you can see the Top SQL ordered by CPU Time.
You can always create a preserved snapshot report to get the information for a different period. -
How to get top CPU consuming sql oracle 10g
I can see the top sql by running ASH report. but there is too much infomation. is there a way I can just display TOP SQL section, and filter out other parts? this way I can use it in a shell script, and loop through the database.
or is there a query can do the ASH job?
thanks.
KarlHi,
What you will do if the EM console bug present?
As a best pratice, i will do like below
1) execute the TOP command and you see process consuming high CPU
2)
SQL> oradebug setospid <&OSPid>
SQL> oradebug tracefile_name --This will list the name of tracefile with location
SQL> oradebug unlimit
SQL> oradebug Event 10046 trace name context forever, level 12;
Let it run for 20 mins around
SQL> oradebug Event 10046 trace name context off;
SQL> exit
3) Tkprof with explain plan
4) check any plan change for that sql

[Debugging] - how to avoi intensive CPU usage with debug command
Hi all !
I hope you're well !
I'm just wondering if there is a mean to avoid the increase of CPU usage when using the debug command. More precisely I would like to know if it exists something to avoid the CPU to saturate and to allow vital process to be prioritary for using the CPU, just like a QoS mecanism but to classify the process in order of importance.
Thanks a lot in advance !some time ago this document was posted on CSC which give an excellent overview on how to savely enable debug commands:
https://supportforums.cisco.com/docs/DOC-16310 -
We have a slightly problem with a M9000, the machine is not under Support right now, cause the machine is for testing and purposes only.
After powering up the showstatus says that all components are in deconfigured status without any knowing of degraded or faulted parts.
Could anyone give a bit teaching to find out where the error maybe can come from and whats responsible for this problem?
Many thanks.

FMS sending InsufficientBW message when plenty of BW/CPU/mem available
I have two test apps (written in Java, running on OSX 10.7) connecting to FMS 4.5 (development) on a Windows2008 EC2 m1.xlarge instance:
A publisher takes audio from the mic, encodes it as Speex and publishes it to a stream.
A player connects to the same stream, decodes and plays the data it receives.
The publisher can connect and stream frames without a problem (each encoded frame is 53 bytes every 20ms).
The player connects and gets a NetStream.Play.InsufficientBW warning and receives no data.
I'm on ADSL: 5Mbs down and 500kbs up (nothing else busy on the network). The EC2 instance has 3-4MBs available to it, its CPU usage is never above 5% (it's a 4-CPU instance) and it has 11GB of free RAM.
This is a fresh instal of FMS 4.5. I haven't changed the config from the defaults.I have two test apps (written in Java, running on OSX 10.7) connecting to FMS 4.5 (development) on a Windows2008 EC2 m1.xlarge instance:

Never allow processes to take all cpu/mem.
Hello,
I run Arch on a semi-old laptio (T61), and from time to time have my system freeze between all the cpu or
memory is being used by some process (Mostly my own lousy code), and wondered if tere is some tool
to never allow a process to take all system resources, so that I never end up with a super slow system.
At the moment I use cpulimit for some processes that I know might eat up a lot of cpu, but
would like to just be able to do a config somewhere so that all processes are limited somehow.
I know you can give process priority with nice, but I don't know how to prioritze to avoid
hangups.
Thanks!https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Cgroups ?

V480 CPU MEM Board !!!
Hello all,
During post when it recognises the CPU speed and cache settings it puts an astrix by one of the CPU`s.
why does it do this as it pass all internal diagnosticsa and does not appear to be faulty ?
Any suggestions welcome. Can you give more details of system configuration.

CPU usage displayed by top does not make sense.
Here is the CPU usage displayed by top (while running VirtualBox with a guest Windows 7, the Archlinux machine is the host).

So VirtualBox is using 173% of my CPU time (how is this possible?), but I see only 1% or 2% on each logical CPU. My CPU is an "i3-3240 CPU @ 3.40GHz" (2 physical cores, 4 logical cores) and the kernel is 3.19.3-3-ARCH (latest official Archlinux kernel). How is this possible? What's happening here? Is it a bug or do I completely misunderstand what these stats mean?Top does add up your multicore usage. So if a process is using two cores at 100% it is using 200%.
However something does not add up in correctly in your case.
I've found top to be kind of unreliable in multicore (especially with hyper threading) systems. -
Is there a way to see which apps have been swapped?
Or maybe something more low-level if it's not possible.
Thanks!I get strange results with it.
I just booted my PC (I turn it off over the night) and there's no swap being used, as top itself shows:
Mem: 319356k total, 278588k used, 40768k free, 13216k buffers
Swap: 497972k total, 0k used, 497972k free, 130092k cached
But then it shows that firefox is using 108m on the column swap:
PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ SWAP COMMAND
3766 root 19 -1 72604 27m 4548 S 29.8 9.0 0:59.64 42m X

Hello together,
actually I've a swapping problem on one of our database server. It is a Oracle Linux 6 Server on which an Grid Infrastructure 11.2.0.3 and 5 Database Instances are running. The database instances are that versions:
- 1x 10.2.0.5 with 3 databases
- 2x 11.2.0.2 with 8 databases
- 2x 11.2.0.3 with 15 databases
Actually the Swap Space of the server is used by 51%. Ok, I know, it isn't critical, but it is so full since 8-9 hours?
So now I'm trying to find out, which process is using so much Swap. I'm trying with top and sot by Swap usage (Shift+o and then p):
top - 11:52:18 up 499 days, 18:50, 2 users, load average: 2.23, 1.80, 2.35
Tasks: 2304 total, 1 running, 2303 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie

OK, there are some oracle Processes which are using the Swap but now I want to know why? Is there any possibillity to have a view which of that oracle processes or which database with which statement is using so much swap?
I'm also using Enterprise Manager Cloud Control and all of the databases and the server are assigned to that. So maybe there is some analyzing possibility?
Thanks a lot and regards,

How I look for swap space I know but how can I now find out, why the swap space is used? OK top tells me, there are processes with command "oracle" which are filling the swap, but why? How can I find out, what these processes are doing?
To the second document 1931980.1:
Here is something strange. I look into top to have a PID which has much swap usage, for example:
top - 12:52:16 up 499 days, 19:50, 2 users, load average: 7.33, 6.34, 5.61
Tasks: 2339 total, 5 running, 2334 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie

26886 ora112 15 0 35.3g 15m 13m S 0.0 0.0 0:00.12 35g oracle
So I looked for 28668 as described in the document:
[root]# echo $((`grep Swap /proc/26886/smaps | awk '{ print $2; }' | tr '\n' '+'`0))
0
Nothing? Why are top and the command are telling different things? But the commands from the first document showed me, that there is the usage. Maybe zombie processes? -

Total RAM as seen from top command is 12G.
*2569836* - Total RAM which is being used currently .
How can I see the total RAM used by all Oracle Processes running in this server. The server is Linux X86 64 Bit. Can I sum up the values under 'VIRT' column of 'top' command to see the total RAM used ?
Is there a way to see the total RAM and CPU used by Oracle from top ?
'VIRT' is the virtual memory - In what way is this related to the figure above, which is the physical memory (RAM) ?
Thanks in Advance

Edited by: SSNair on Oct 21, 2010 2:39 AMOracle used shared memory to implement the SGA, which constituted the largest memory consumption of the Oracle instance. The problem is that in many modern OS, including linux, it is hard to define the actual memory usage fo a software. This is because the memory used by a process is actually composed of shared (e.g., shared memory, shared library, executable code) and private (e.g., the heap, the stack) components. Utilities like top, ps, etc reports all memory visible by a process, disregarding whether it is shared or not. As a result, the total of VIRT etc will be inflated by the shared components. For a more accurate figure of memory usage, shared memory / library / code should be counted once.
Before 11g, Oracle used System V ipc, and the amount of memory allocated can be checked using ipcs. In 11g, Oracle switched to /dev/shm, use df to check the memory allocation. (Thanks user11150436)
The "Mem used" figure in top is the actual usage of the memory: shared memory and library are not multi-counted. However, Linux will always cache (read before actually requested) and buffer (write after signalling completion) disk I/O. Therefore, "Mem used" is almost always very close to the amount of physical memory. "Mem used" - "buffers" - "cached" reflects the memory actually used by the OS and all programs more accuately.
And you can use the pmap utility to check the memory map. Then you classify the sharable and unsharable memory usage to calculate a more accurate result suiting your need. You need OS knowledge to understand the output. -
How to find memory taken by a process using top command
I wanted to know how to find the memory taken by a process using top command. The output of the top command is as follows as an example:
Mem: 13333364k total, 13238904k used, 94460k free, 623640k buffers
Swap: 25165816k total, 112k used, 25165704k free, 4572904k cached

I hope, my question is clear as to how to find the memory taken by a process using top command.
Please revert with the reply to my query.
RegardsHave you tried "man top" to see the documentation for the top command?
How about the following: http://lmgtfy.com/?q=show+memory+with+top+command
The 5th column (VIRT) shows the amount of RAM + swap
The 6th column (RES) shows RAM
The 7th column (SHR) shows memory shared between processes
