Trackball or shuttle device suggestions..

I hate using a mouse for editing with FCP, so I'm looking to buy a good track ball. However, I really liked using shuttle devices with Media 100, Lightworks, and Avid, so I was wondering if there were any good (and cheap) shuttle devices for FCP.
Any suggestions of good track balls or shuttle devices would be greatly appreciated. In the past, I've preferred using large ball track balls to the smaller ball ones... seems to make small and large moves smoother.

There's the good ol' PowerMate from Griffin that's been around forever (about $36 on Amazon).

  • Will a VZW store replace trackball on uninsured device?

My trackball stopped working last night, and dismantling and cleaning with alcohol didn't help. Since I'm tired of waiting for the Bold and my husband just bought me an iPad, I activated a regular phone and don't plan to upgrade in the near future. But I'd like to give my BlackBerry to someone else. If I take it to a store, do you think someone would replace the trackball? Otherwise, I can order a new part from cnn.cn for $8 ... has anyone here had any luck with that?
For those of you waiting for the Bold, the CSR today told me he knows nothing about a release date. Pretty much what I expected, but at least he didn't deny its existence, if that gives you any hope.
    Thanks for your time!

Thanks, Crackberry20. I walked into the Verizon store today. Someone immediately greeted me, took my device in back, and came out less than 5 minutes later. My Berry is sporting a new stark white (and working) trackball. (I forgot how white they are supposed to be, not grimey gray like mine was). Verizon customer service rocks!

  • NAS device suggestions ...

    Hi,
I would like to have a NAS drive with gigabit ethernet to do my nightly backup. What are the best suggestions for this NAS ?
    Thanks in advance.
    Robert Lespérance

    Robert,
I'm currently using an Netgear (former Infrant) ReadyNAS NV+ (http://www.netgear.com/Products/Storage/ReadyNASNVPlus.aspx)
Mine came with 2x 500 Gb SATA disks in a mirror (models vary), which I can later expand to a RAID5 set when I run out of disk space (can take 4 disks in total).
It's very silent and does it's job very well; all the info is online.

  • 8900: All Keys + Trackball wont work.

    Hello,
I have the 8900 and my carrier is Tata Docomo. None of the keys and the trackball are working, This includes the mute key on top of the phone, the lock key, the side push button keys , . .  all keys are not working. And neither is the trackball.
I flashed the OS, as in reinstalled the OS, 5.0.090 (Platform 4.0.023) but that didnt solve the problem.
I've also plugged out the media card, to avoid any conflicts.
Have done hard resets of course, but thats not helped either.
Except for the keys not functioning, the phone is otherwise functioning, I can recieve calls, which I of course cant pick up. I am being able to use it as a modem and connect to the internet using Desktop Manager. The Desktp manager is detecting the phone, too.
The Desktop manager version I am using is 5.0.1.11.
Out of the 252.5 M device space available, I have 131.0 M free.
    Please help!

    I found a solution...maybe
ok, so this same thing happened to my 8900 yesterday and after countless battery pulls, swaps etc. i finally just let  the thing drain itself out of battery. as soon as it had died, i plugged it back into the wall and pressed the power button. I don't know why this worked, but when the screen came back on i could use all my buttons and trackball again! I suggest you try that, might sound stupid but it worked for me!

  • Trackball not working - quick trackball cleaning how to

Here's a tip that I find useful for cleaning the trackball.
If you are uncomfortable with removing the trackball as most solutions suggest or you just want to perform a super quick, safe cleaning then the following should work for you. Pick up some "QD Electronic Cleaner" made by CRC. It's in a white and red aerosol can. It's for cleaning sensitive electronic equipment and connectors. If you have some of this at the house already or don't mind spending $5 on a can then this is faster and safer than pulling your trackball out
    1. Remove battery.
    2. Press trackball down to allow room for the cleaner to get in and around the trackball back to the components on the backside that are gunked up.
    3. Give it a couple of quick sprays pressing the nozzle right up to the gap created between the ball and the housing.
    4. Wait a minute for it to dry, it dries quickly. If you soaked it then you may need to wait longer. If you roll the trackball and the ball looks moist then continue waiting. It took about 20 seconds for me.
    5. Insert battery.
In all, if you have the spray it takes about 1 minute start to finish and there's no risk of damaging the phone. If this doesn't work for you then trackball removal may be necessary, but I'd still use the electronic cleaner instead of touching anything behind the ball.
    Michael

I came to this site this morning because I too was having issues with my trackball had saw a post about cleaning the trackball with a qtip and alcohol; didn't have that available so someone suggested holding the trackball down while off and rotating it and blowing air into it.  I cleaned around the trackball with a needle and blew into it a couple of times as suggested and now it is fine--us Teachers are subject to budget cuts!:

  • Trackball not moving in a direction

There is a very easy solution. The solution is the same as years ago when computer mice all had trackballs. Take a cotton swap and a drop of rubbing alcohol and place it on the the on the swab  and then apply that to the trackball. Then move the trackball. It should free it up instantly. I am very surprised that tech support at Blackberry does not know this. This a trick that computer techs have known for years. We used to take te track ball out and clean it but I am not sure how the housing on the trackball is secured so I personally would not fool with it

Have you removed your trackball from the device? Cleaning mouse in easy but BlackBerry trackball is a bit difficult. I did it by myself for two of pearl devices. Some extra causion need to be taken for this.

  • BB 9360 is not recognized by my computer.

The setup. Just got a brand new BB9360 as part of a product exchange plan. My old BB's track ball had worn out. Anyway, after 4 trips back and forth from the store I bought it from to work out OTHER problems (bad battery as it turned out) I finally have a phone that I know will work (saw them charge it in the store, from a computer).
Now, I know for a fact that my USB cable and ports will support a BB device for charging and syncing with a computer. Both were working just fine on my old BB device which I had until last week. The USB ports in my desktop are all new, and my laptop is less than a year old, all its ports are fine. So far, I've been able to rule out virtually all of the possible issues that the device suggests. I have done a reset by pulling the battery. I have attempted to charge it via a wall outlet with a USB to AC adapter. Nothing at all happens. I plugged it into the computer, and it told me that it cannot charge the device and it recommended I install the Desktop Manager. Well, it was already on the computer. I installed the USB drivers on their own, I've tried all my ports on both computers.
Between all the issues with the phones I haven't had a phone for more than a month but my carrier, Rogers, won't let me put a hold on my plan until it's fixed, so I've been paying for nothing. I really hope someone can help me because I'm tearing my hair out at this point.

    Hello,

That bit seems to me the most important...if the BB will not charge via wall charger, then it will not charge via PC/USB. Something is very wrong, with either your wall charger, your BB, or both. I recommend a trip back to them, with all of your things in hand, to show them exactly how it does not work, and insist that they make good on your contract...you are 100% correct that paying for nothing is incorrect. Escalate with them, push to a Manager, and push them to escalate into RIM if they cannot resolve it. Do not let them fob you off...do not leave the store without either a working (with all gear you will take with you from the store) configuration or a promise for further escalation and research.
    Good luck!

  • Airport Extreme and AT&T DSL Modem Settings?

I have given up!  Switched from Time Warner CAble Modem Internet connection with my AEBS network after 3 years without problems.  Moved and had to switch and get AT&T DSL High Speed Internet using their Modem (WESTELL REV: S, ADSL2+ ROUTER).  Ever since self-installing this "system", I have been totally unable to use my wireless network to connect to the Internet, as wired and configured like the TWC connection!  THE ONLY WAY TO GET ON THE INTERNET IS:
    1)     TO TURN OFF AIRPORT (FROM MENU AT TOP OF SCREEN).
    2)     CONNECT THE ETHERNET CABLE DIRECTLY INTO THE MACBOOK PRO 17" (MBP) ETHERNET PORT AND THE OTHER END DIRECTLY
TO THE AT&T DSL MODEM (ITS ONLY ETHERNET PORT).
    3)     The Internet then works fine.
I have thoroughly messed-up BOTH my MBP's Network settings and my AEBS' manual settings -- to the point I have no capability to remember the "correct" settings for the MBP Network Settings nor the settings for the AEBS!!!
In looking into the communication settings for the DSL MODEM (using Safari and its IP address -- 192.168.1.254 -- to access and look at them), I recorded them after activating the service online with AT&T and they are these settings:
    Downstream Rate:               3008 Kbps
    Upstream Rate:                    512 Kbps
    Internet IP Address:              75.47.152.126
    Internet Gateway Address:  151.164.186.1
    DNS Servers:                        68.94.156.1 dnsr1.sbcglobal.net
                                                   68.94.157.1 dnsr2.sbcglobal.net
Mode:                                   PPP on the modem (Private IP for LAN device)
    Local Network
    Modem IP Address:              192.168.1.254
    Ethernet Status:                    Connected
Maybe you can tell, but I'm not sure if this modem is using PPPOe or DCHP OR NAT OR BOTH OR WHAT, but the "PPP on the modem (Private IP for LAN device)" suggests it has its PPPOe settings internal with my Member ID so this modem can and does connect to the Internet -- BECAUSE WHEN CONNECTED DIRECTLY TO MY MBP's ETHERNET PORT AND DIRECTLY TO THE MODEM's ETHERNET PORT, THE MBP IS CONNECTED TO THE INTERNET (but I cannot utilize my AEBS features also like printing and allowing another notebook pc to wirelessly connect thru the AEBS to the Internet like the TWC method did)!
I know this may seem confusing, but I am desparately depending on your help with exactly what settings I need to make inside the AEBS and to make to the MBP's Network settings for both Airport and Ethernet usable!!!
SO, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE HELP ME BY PROVIDING ME WITH EITHER (OR BOTH) OF THIS INFORMATION:
    1)     COMPLETE SETTINGS FOR EACH AND EVERY FIELD IN THE AEBS MANUAL SETUP AS WELL AS COMPLETE SETTINGS FOR EACH
AND EVERY FIELD IN THE MBP NETWORK SETTINGS FOR THE AIRPORT PORT AND THE ETHERNET PORT.
    2)     SEND ME FULL WEBSITE ADDRESSES AND TOPIC TO GO TO TO FIND OUT ALL OF THESE DATA TO BE ENTERED INTO MY SYSTEM.
I THANK YOU FOR ANY AND ALL HELP YOU CAN PROVIDE!!!!!
    LARRY W. HAMILTON

The AEBS defaults to 10.0.1.x for internal LAN IP addresses. I'm guessing the Callvantage defaults to 192.168.1.x
You'll have to find out how to access the admin webserver on the call Callvantage, set it to a fixed IP the AEBS would see and enable the Default Host option on the AEBS with the IP address you gave the Callvantage.
Default Host is Applespeak for DMZ.

  • Keyboard and Mouse no longer work after update

Earlier today I ran pacman -Syu for the first time since the 18th, and initially everything seemed to be working properly.  However, upon my next boot, both my mouse and keyboard (both USB) no longer worked, leaving me stuck at the login screen unable to move the cursor or switch to a different terminal.  Unplugging and reconnecting my keyboard and mouse did nothing.
A related topic (which could be solved by reconnecting the devices) suggested that booting with runlevel 1 might help, and this allowed me to use the terminal, but any attempt to start X resulted in getting stuck at login in the same way.
Disabling and re-enabling hotplugging via xorg.conf had no impact (there was a note in Xorg.0.log indicating that since hotplugging was enabled, mouse and keyboard drivers were being disabled.  Apparently it's a fairly standard warning).
The only package that was updated that seemed to be input related was xf86-xinput, but downgrading to the previous version did not fix the problem.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what might have caused this issue?
Thanks for any help you can provide.

Adding to the above: I also tried plugging in an Microsoft USB keyboard at the point when Windows freezes at the Windows log-in screen. The keyboard is not recognized and the only way I can leave this screen is to power-off the computer.

  • IPhone OS 2.2 on iPod Touch no longer behaves nicely with iTunes under Win

Please note the use of the phrase "no longer behaves" as opposed to the phrase "doesn't behave"; this is not a complaint about the iPod Touch not working with Windows for the first time.
I submitted this topic to a developer forum as a consequence of having upgraded to device OS 2.2 - as required for the use of the SDK for iPhone OS 2.2. An Apple person at the developer side of Apple suggested I discuss this over here - you'd think Apple people would talk to each other and share their observations across corporate divisions, but, I guess not. Direct copies of that development forum topic are repeated here... unfortunately the developer forums seem to have disappeared into thin air... here's a link to the topic instead; hopefully the dev forum will reappear soon:
    <https://devforums.apple.com/message/15941#15941>

Here's the original dev forum topic texts - with some editing to remove developer forum context (and yes, I've followed the steps to check that Windows drivers and services are installed and running):
I've had my iPod Touch for over a year now, faithfully upgrading to the latest available software versions, naively believing it is is best to do so.
Ever since I upgraded the Touch to OS 2.2 I've noticed that it constantly, but with no consistency related to timing, tries to synchronize when connected to my Windows machine running iTunes 8.0.2.20. It does this with no disconnection/reconnection of the USB connector. It does this whether I set the check box to prevent automatically synchronizing or not. Often iTunes will complain that it cannot communicate with the device suggesting that I reconnect and restore the device (ya right!). Or it will complain that it can't recognize the device or can't find a Disk(!). Occasionally, the iPod Touch just reboots.
I have tried replacing the USB connector, on the off chance that I damaged the cable after upgrading the software to OS 2.2, but this doesn't change the behaviour either.
I had a similar experience with my iPhone, also running OS 2.2. I now only ever leave my iPhone connected to my MacBook, where this kind of sporadic re-synchronization behaviour does not occur. And when I connect my iPod Touch to my MacBook, for downloading developed apps, it does not behave badly like it does when connected to my Windows machine.
I realize that I could just move my entire music library over to my MacBook (after I spend another $250 increasing my disk capacity or adding an external drive) but I'm resisting because I shouldn't have to (so there!
Does anybody else out there see this behaviour. Or does nobody use iTunes on Windows?
Please, no snarky comments about how bad Windows is. After all, if it is that bad why would Apple support an iTunes application that runs under Windows?
    ... sometime later ...
For some reason this bad behaviour is now happening about once every 30 seconds. Oh wait.. now my iPod Touch is rebooting again <sigh>.
Even though I do not have "Open iTunes when this iPod is connected" checked and I do have "Disable automatic synching for iPhones and iPods" checked, iTunes still starts up when this occurs, and consumes its usual 100% CPU while it starts up... very annoying.
If it hangs around long enough for me to press the "Sync" button I am usually able to complete the synchronization operation. Starting now, I'm going to just recharge my iPod Touch from the walll socket instead of my Windows machine's USB connection.

  • ExpressCard/34 not working in BootCamp Windows 7 64-bit. Apple's BIOS emulation does not give enough resources.

    MacBook Pro unibody, 15" 2009
ExpressCard/34 (Card is by Transcend TS-RDF1, JMicron chip for SD card) is not working in BootCamp Windows 7 64-bit. Windows reports:
"This device cannot find enough free resources that it can use. (Code 12)
If you want to use this device, you will need to disable one of the other devices on this system."
Other data points: Card works fine in Mac OSX, worked under Windows XP 32-bit (initially reported same problem, but works after reboot).
Checking the forums there seems to be no actual device suggested to actually remove that would help the problem. And even if it was, the concept is ridiculous. What other device would you like to remove? Display adapter? Network adapter? No way. I use all available devices and don't want to compromise.
It seems like BIOS emulation does not allocate enough resources to ExpressCard.
Are others having the same problem?
Does anyone have a fix for this?
Is there anyone at Apple who cares to provide a solution?

It is not a driver problem, but a problem in the BIOS emulated by bootcamp on some (not all) MBP models. So unless Apple fixes it in bootcamp, there is no real solution. And obviously, Apple doesn't care. They are dropping the Expresscard slot anyway.
Unfortunately, this poster seems right: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=912259 :
The 2008/2009 Macbook Pros don't allow to use the ExpressCard slot because of EFI/Bootcamp errors (Windows Vista/7 cannot allocate an IRQ to the slot). You don't need any drivers for using an ExpressCard slot on Windows, you only need the drivers for the corresponding card you are using.
Bootcamped XP allowed to use the slot, but you could not use hot-plugging.
    And from the Sonnet site ( http://www.sonnettech.com/product/tempo_sata_express34.html ) :
Tempo SATA ExpressCard/34 not supported under Windows 7 or Windows Vista when running on unibody MacBook Pro computers. The problem is caused by the MacBook Pro's BIOS emulation, which doesn't allocate enough resources to support certain kinds of Expresscard/34 devices, such as a SATA controller, in these operating systems.
    (added link to Sonnet's explanation)
