Transcoding from AVCHD to ProRes

Hello and Happy New Year to all.
I have a question to ask yourself.
I have edited a project in AVCHD.
When importing the clips I've checked the option to transcode to ProRes, not because I wanted to work in their native format.
Well, the clips were imported to H264 and not to Apple ProRes.
I did all the tests without any success.
Transcoding after the acquisition only if the operation is successful.
Does anyone know give me useful information?
Thanks in advance.

The dvd obtained previously in ProRes editing, encoding with Compressor and burning with DVD Studio Pro, in my opinion were the best.
Today I notice a loss of quality that I do not know whether it is naive to be connected to the editing of files in format AVCHD although it should not be so.
Thank you.
Greetings.

  • Transcoding from AVCHD 60i for 24p

Sorry for this long post. I have spent a long time looking for answers.
I would like to combine different formats into one sequence. I primarily have AVCHD 1080p24 but need to include some 1080i60. All shot with Panasonic Lumix GH2.
I have logged and captured with FCP7 – Target Format = Apple ProRes 422 (HQ)
    FCP7 says:
    - Source Format 1080p24 is Vid Rate 23.98 fps / 1920x1080 / TC Format = Non-Drop / Pulldown = None
    - Source Format 1080i60 is Vid Rate 29.97 fps / 1920x1080 / TC Format = Drop Pulldown = Upper (Odd)
I would much prefer to make the 29.97 conform to the 23.98. But I don’t know exactly what my workflow should be. Want to retain highest quality possible for eventual DVD and Blu-Ray. Do I need to use compressor on the 29.97 before dropping them into my Sequence set up for 23.98?
All of my clips look good in the viewer slug. They also play fine when I put them individually in my sequence with conformed setting (letting FC change settings automatically). Only issue was some slight alternating horizontal lines in the 29.97 clips.  The lines are tolerable, but in any case, I thought that I needed to deinterlace the 1080i60 - 29.97 fps. Is that correct? CompressorManualLink
I put the quick time files transferred through fcp into compressor and tride some different transcodes.
    - Apple ProRes 422 HQ Reverse Telecine. (This produced 24p).
    - Also tried this with the “for Interlace material” and “for Progressive material” versions also set at Telecine and got the same result.
    - Apple ProRes 422 HQ for Interlaced Material with Frame Controls set to Resize Filter “Fast”. Output Fields “Progressive”. Deinterlace “Best (Motion compensated). Anti-alias & Details Level “0”. Rate Conversion “Best  High Quality motion compensated”. Duration 100%. (This took a long time to process).
I imported these new transcoded clips into Final Cut.
Once again they, all play fine in the viewer slug except for some strange blotchy pixel distortion at one part on the clip that I did not use Reverse Telecine on.
However, I did the same test with the timeline and all of the clips now have horizontal lines at least 10 times worse than before! The clip without reverse telecine (still in 29.97) is slightly better off. My sequence settings are:
    HDTV 1080i (16:9)  - I’m not sure what this should be…
    Pixel Aspect Ration = Square
    Field Dominance = None
Timebase = Set according to clip I was testing
Quicktime Compressor = ProRes 422 (HQ)
    Quality = 100%
I’m guessing my workflow is wrong. Do I need to just drop the non transcoded 29.97 clips into the 23.98 sequence and then “send to” Compressor? What settings would I need to use? Or am I supposed to some how transfer/capture the clips into compressor before trasfering to FCP? I don’t know how to work with AVCHD format without first transferring to FCP via ProRes compressor.

Still hoping for a reply on this. If anyone has any advice would much appreciated.

  • FCE log and transfer goes from avchd to prores which then requires rendering down to AIC -- what's with that??

Someone gave me a Sony camera (HDR-CX160) to try to get some footage out of...
Log and Transfer worked fine, but the resulting files in Capture Scratch are ProRes.  When I add them to the timeline, it requires rendering (Lengthy rendering), presumably to convert to AIC.
How can I get Log and Tranfer to go straight to AIC??

Do you have FCS or FCP-X installed on the same computer? Also, the HDR-CX160 is capable of shooting 60p which is not Log and Tansfer, or FCE compatible. You need to make sure the camera is recording 1080i60.
    Anyway, try this:
Open Log and Transfer, and click on the gear in the upper/center portion of the pane to select preferences:
When the preference open, navigate to AVCHD Plugin and choose Apple Intermediate Codec.
    Then try importing your files.

  • Can I transcode from .mxf (EX3) to prores in Compressor or should that be done best in FCPX?

I am new to FCPX and compressor, can I transcode from .mxf (EX3) to prores in Compressor or should that be done best in FCPX?
I would like to do it the best way, perhaps that means fastest, or least prone to troublesomeness. Cheers

    Hmm…not sure.
Either way, you need to make them into Quick Time files and use the Sony transfer software for that.
FCPX is pretty fast and if your profile is accurate, it should be speedy on that version MBP.  Why not do a test and report back?

  • Why FCP X cannot import 5.1 channel audio from AVCHD

I just bought a Sony PJ790 camcorder and it can record HD movie with 5.1 surround audio. When I connect the camcorder the the computer, indeed it shows 6 (5.1) channel under windows. However, when I tried to import the movie into FCP X, the channel count of FCP X only reported 2 channels. I was puzzled and keep importing. After I imported the movie, I actually only see 2 channels (left and right) .
Why FCP X only recognized 2 channels and how to correct this problem ?
    Thanks in advance.

iMovie and FCPX both offer transcoding of AVCHD to an editing codec. In iMovie, it is transcoded to Apple Intermediate Codec. In Final Cut Pro X, AVCHD is transcoded to ProRes 422. In Final Cut Pro X, you have the option of editing natively in AVCHD, but most Pros will transcode to ProRes 422, because speed and quality of editing is more important to a Pro than saving on disk space. For why this transcoding is done, see this post. https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3941
Both iMovie and Final Cut Pro X also can do analysis for stabilization, analysis for rolling shutter, etc. FCPX can also analyze for color, sound problems, and maybe more.
With Final Cut Pro, the transcoding and analysis do not slow you down, because it can happen in the background. You can start editing immediately.
Also, you mentioned that you are converting m2ts files for use in iMovie using ClipWrap. iMovie and Final Cut Pro X both handle m2ts from Sony quite well with no need for an external converter. So I assume you must be shooting 60P, which iMovie does not do. FCPX will import 60P with no need for an external converter.
Final Cut Pro X has similarities to iMovie, but it is much more complex, because you have fine control over everything. In addition to the $300 price tag, you might want to also budget for some training. There are good video-based training resources from Ripple Training, Larry Jordan, and also some free Tutorials on YouTube. THere are also good books on FCPX. The best books I have found are these from Edgar Rothermich -

  • Transcoding from 1920 X 1440 query

I am using Toast 10 to transcode some AVCHD stuff from 1920 x 1440 50p. As I am mixing the material on a generally HDV timeline, I have been transcoding the AVCHD material to HDV 1440 x 1080 25fps so it matches with the HDV spec.
Would it be any better quality and would it still work with my HDV material, if I transcoded the AVCHD to 1920 x 1440 HDV and just changed the frame rate to 25fps?

Unless you capture the HDV material in ProRes, then both the AVCHD media and the HDV media will be in ProRes throughout your editing. Keeping an HDV workflow might be going initially it can be very time consuming on the back end of production when it becomes more render intensive and the project needs to be conformed. Unless of course you have to go back to HDV tape for some reason.

  • Unexpectedly large filesizes from AVCHD?

I'm trying to burn a very simple Blu-ray project, just as a workflow test.  I use a Mac, it runs 10.6.7 and has 8GB of  memory and plenty of drive space.  My footage is from an older AVCHD  camera, so it's in 1440x1080 (anamorphic).  There are about 130 clips in  the AVCHD disk image that I'm working from, and they total about 11GB  in size and about an hour in duration.  I'm just trying to burn a very  simple Blu-ray project to a BD-RE as a test.
I can bring in my MTS files just fine, they appear as assets and I can  add them to a timeline.  I make sure to check my project, everything  seems fine including that I've remembered to tell Encore what to do when  the timeline finishes playing or when someone presses the Title button.   I can hit the Preview button in Encore and watch my stuff, even skip  through the chapters, no worries.
I make sure that everywhere I can find a drop down mentioning anything  about quality or output format, everything is set to "Blu-ray" and  "Don't Transcode."
I go to Build, and everything checks out and Encore is happy to  proceed...then it tells me there isn't enough room on my media and  that's when I realize that according to the bar indicating disk use  Encore thinks, for some reason, that my project is over 25GB in size  (around 25.4GB to be precise).  However, I'm only working with 11GB of  footage and I don't want to transcode any of it.  So, what am I missing?   I'm sure a few assets need to be created like a blank menu and what  not, but how is my project more-than-doubling in size?  I'm presuming  I've missed something key about avoiding transcoding between AVCHD input  and Blu-ray output?
Thanks in advance for your advice!

  • Ingest from AVCHD Canon VIXIA HF10

After quite a bit of research I purchased a Canon VIXIA HF10 with the hope that FCE would ingest footage from the camera. However, FCE does not recognize the camera. I've also tried to capture once the program is open but it tells me it is "unable to initialize video deck". Any recommendations?

Is this the case with any AVCHD camcorder?
In general, yes. Some cameras shoot in a format called "AVCHD Lite" which need conversion for use in FCE. (BTW, FCE will transcode your AVCHD media into the Apple Intermediate Codec during ingestion which will greatly increase file size. Hope you have lots of free space!)

  • Help with getting high quality DVDs from AVCHD footage

    Hello,
I know enough about video editing with PE7 to be dangerous, and was hoping someone could help me out.
My question is regarding getting the highest quality standard DVD from AVCHD footage. I have a Sony HDR-SR12 camcorder recording in AVCHD. I am editing footage natively in AVCHD with PE7 on a quad core system. No problem with that. However, when I export to standard DVD the quality of the video goes down drastically. (Yes, I know burning to Blu-ray would give me higher quality, but I am giving this DVD to a friend who doesn't have Blu-ray).
So far I have tried starting my project in both HD 1080i 30 5.1 channel:
    General
    Editing mode: HDV 1080i
    Timebase: 29.97 fps
    Video Settings
    Frame size: 1440h 1080v (1.333)
    Frame rate: 29.97 frames/second
Pixel Aspect Ratio: HD Anamorphic 1080 (1.333)
    and Full HD 1080i 30 5.1 channel:
    General
    Editing mode: HD 1080i
    Timebase: 29.97 fps
    Video Settings
    Frame size: 1920h 1080v (1.000)
    Frame rate: 29.97 frames/second
Pixel Aspect Ratio: Square Pixels (1.0)
But I see no discernable difference in the quality of my output onto DVD.
This is where my knowledge is lacking...how can I get the best quality output from my AVCHD onto a standard DVD? Is there some format I can convert to first, and then burn to DVD? Also, I am willing to break the footage into a couple of DVDs to improve the quality, but I don't know how or what to do for that.
My footage looks REALLY great when viewing from the HDR-SR12 direct to HD TV with HDMI cable, but not very good on the DVD. My footage is of a ballet recital, and I lose definition in the faces, costumes, etc on the DVD output.
    Any help is appreciated! Thanks!
    Gina

    Hey Gina,
This may be a year late, but as I have been pulling my hair out trying to solve this problem for the last 48 hours I finally did find somewhat of a work around, but it requires Adobe PP CS4.2.
    There is a plug-in here:
    http://www.mainconcept.com/site/prosumer-products-4/mpeg-pro-hd-7850/features-7861.html
Which will actually output your edit as an AVCHD file. You can then burn this straight to an AVCHD using Nero 9 and keep the highquality level of your clips and not need Blu-Ray. The DVD player will need to be AVCHD capable, but I just bought one of those for $40 as compared to the $200+ of most Blu-Ray players.
    Hope that helps.

  • I can transcode my AVCHD files to DNxHD in Media Encoder, but when I ingest through Prelude, Media Encoder Fails.

I am instructing students working on longer form projects to transcode their AVCHD material to Quicktime using the DNxHD codec (which is installed, and then preset loaded into Media Encoder).
I am doing this since it is the suggested workflow in this article:
Audio and Video glitches | AVCHD footage
It worked great last year in CS6, but this workflow is not working at all in CC2014.
When I transcode directly through Media Encoder, the process works fine, but if I ingest using Prelude (where students choose which files to transcode, set destination, etc) the transcoding fails and we get an AME error. Not sure why this would be any different than transcoding right into Media Encoder...
We are working on PCs running Windows 7.
    Any suggestions?
    Thank you!

    Hi Sally,
Could you please post a screen shot of the AME error you are getting? And as Michael asked, could you also let us know which preset are you using?
    Thanks,

Using Compressor 4, How do you create a droplet to transcode from final cut files to mp4, mp3 and m4v formatting?

Take a look at this section; it's pretty clear.
Compressor offers settings for each of the output formats you want. (For example, the m4v sttings for Apple Devices.)
    Good luck.

  • Transcode AVCHD to ProRes 4.2.2

Can anyone who has a recent Mac Pro say how long it takes to transcode a minute of AVCHD footage into ProRes 4.2.2 using Final Cut Pro 6.01? Does it transcode in real time, faster, slower?
Just wondering how long I will have to be waiting around to get footage from the new Panasonic HDC-SD5 AVCHD camcorder into the computer, if I get a new Mac Pro.
    Thanks

    Hi
downloading 1minute 720 25pn footage through firewire400 directly from the camera (I have an HVX 200) takes about 40-45 seconds. But as argued by several members on this forum before, if you had an express card slot and the duel adapter for the P2 card the dowloading process would be faster.
    Hope that helps!

  • Transcoding .MTS files to ProRes 422 Audio Skips

Whenever I transcode .MTS files in Prelude (and Prelude then uses Media Encoder) the resulting ProRes 422 files have audio that skips around, is out of sync, and eventually becomes entirely non-existent. It only happens in Prelude/Media Encoder too. I've tried encoding using Final Cut Pro 7 and iFFMpeg and both those work just fine. I'd really like to use Prelude though if possible. Has anyone experienced this strange behavior?
    Thanks in advance!

This is what the AVCHD structure needs to be if you want FCPX to import from a "Camera Archive". The thumbnail folder is optional, but the BDMV folder as shown needs to exist in the AVCHD package.
If thats all in order, then the import function (See button below) should work...

  • Transcode .MTS AVCHD for use in PP CS3

Slightly odd question but here goes.
I have a number of .MTS AVCHD files I want to edit in PP CS3 on my work computer. The files are mainly 1920x1080 50i but one is 1440x1080 50i, all with A52 Audio (akaAC3)(a52): I didn't do the recording!
CS3 won't allow me to import in this format so I need to transcode the files, keeping maximum quality. Unfortunately I am a cash strapped student so can't afford to buy professional transcoding software. I can however install a trial PP CS 5.5 on my home computer and use that if it will work well, then move the video files back to work (my work computer only runs win XP. Vista or 7 are system requirements and prevent CS 5.5 install).
Essentially what is the best free way to transcode these files and what format should they go to? CS5.5 trial on my home computer or other freeware? I have searched around the forum and the web throughly but can't find many useful answers that don't contradict each other.
    Cheers
    Nick

Most converters will do a horrible job and convert to a format still difficult to edit.
Don't waist your money on AVCHD Upshift (as mentioned in John's link).
Best thing and i does not come free is Cineform.
It will give you visual lossless footage, easy to edit.
    Download the trial.
If its a one time thing only convert all your footage in the trial periode.
After that you will only need the neoplayer from Cineform (download) to edit in Premiere. You cannot export to Cineform, but that should not be a problem.
There are plenty of other formats.
You do need to install the ac3 codec first (just coping the .dll to Premiere wont do it) otherwise you will not be able to convert the files with Cineform.

  • Converting 2 channel audio from AVCHD to 5.1 audio for bluray

    Hello,
I am looking to put AVCHD video files (*.MTS) containing 5.1 audio and 2-channel (stereo) audio onto bluray.  I would like to convert the 2 channel audio to 5.1 audio, so that all of the files can be encoded onto bluray with 5.1 audio in Encore. I am using Premiere Pro CS6 version 6.0.3.  I have tried to bring the MTS files into Premiere Pro, and convert stereo audio to 5.1 using Audition.  However when the file is exported to Encore, upon transcoding there is no audio.    Please let me know what is the best way to resolve this.  Also, would I require something like Surcode plugin, or are there other ways to get around this?  Thanks.

    "Hi seaspray07,
    "Hope this clarifies."
sorry it doesn't -  it confuses me and I don't get why you want to do it this complicated way ;-)
    1. If you have problems try to simplify your workflow. Why do you try to work with dynamic link in Encore? This isn't the classic route and I don't see why you need it in this case.
    2. In a classical workflow you load  final encoded audio and video files in Encore - in this case a .m4v and a .ac3 file encoded in Adobe Media Encoder.
    3. To get this files you create a Premiere timeline with 5.1 master audio and load your clips onto it.
For all 5.1 clips Premiere will create a 5.1 audio track. For all stereo clips Premiere will create a stereo audio rack.
--> Keep in Mind you can't export a premiere audio track. That isn't possible even though this would be handy in a lot of situations. You alway only export the master audio track of a timeline. That master audio track get's it input from all audio tracks of a timeline. If there is a 5.1 audio track 6 channes are mixed to the master audio - if it's only a stereo track only L, R get's mixed up to the 5.1 master.
The master audio track is what you can hear if you play back a timeline.
    4. Why do you want to convert stereo audio tracks into 5.1 audio tracks in the timeline? It needs much more filesize/ ram slows down your playback and gives you a unhandy viewing with lots of emty audio channels... Why dont store and view a stereo track as a stereo track?
    5. If you have placed your stereo and 5.1 audio tracks on the timeline you can export the final mix via Adobe Media Encoder with the Surcode plugin as Dolby Digital 5.1 .ac3
"I sent the audio to Audition because I wanted to modify the audio file from stereo to 5.1, and bring it back into PrPro to combine with the video clip from the corresponding MTS file..."
That doesn't make any sense... because Premiere does it automatically for you without Audition. You simply have to do nothing - just place your stereo clip on the timeline and ready.
If you want to use Audition you have to have a real reason for it - for example do extensive audio work and mastering Tasks - conform it to R128 loudness or something like that.
Does this make sense to you? ;-)
