Tried updating Macbook to Yosemite - drive crashed - now trying to reinstall Lion on new drive but it is 'temporarily unavailable' HELP PLEASE

Last night, I tried updating my Macbook to Yosemite. It crashed mid way - telling me the drive needs repairing.
I am now following these instructions below. I backed up all of my work before the update, however not my iTunes / iPhoto. I would like to do this. My next step is to reinstall Lion on my external hard drive however it is 'temporarily unavailable'.
Does anyone know a way around this? I assume you can no longer install Lion cos Apple move so quickly.

I don't understand why some online forums are saying to click "erase." This is a brand new external hard without any files on it.
Just use Disk Utility to erase the drive. Select HFS+ (Journaled). It should then become a Mac HFS+ drive.
Also, if I use time machine, will my files be deleted off my computer and only saved on the external hard drive, or will it still be on my computer as well as the external hard drive? I have never backed up my files, so please explain to me what I should do and whether I will have files in both places.
TM is for backing up stuff. It woudn't make much sense to be a "backup" if it deleted the originals of the stuff it was backing up would it? So you end up with the source (original) stuff and the destination backup.
Lastly, if I am thinking about updating my software to a newer version (such as OX lion) is it better to back up files now or wait till after I update the software? I am not sure if it makes a difference.
I always say never ever update your system without a backup to fall back on in case something should go wrong with the update, and in the case of lion, you don't like it, and want to go back to Snow Leopard. So yes, it makes a big difference!

Finally, TM isn't the only way to back stuff up. There are many 3rd party backup utilities as well. Two of the more popular ones are Cabon Copy Cloner and Super Duper.

Drive crashed and can't install OS on new drive

I recently installed a new HD in my Powerbook after the latter crashed. I am having problems when it comes to installing my OS. I have a grey disk that says it is a software restore installation disk for 10.2 and then i have 3 black upgrade disks for 10.3 I used the 10.3 disk to run disk utility and format my HD but I recieve an error saying that i am unable to use it to install the OS because I do not have an earlier version installed. I tried to boot up off of the grey 10.2 disk and try to run the install but it stops on the grey screen and the screen gets a crazy horizontal pattern and then everything just locks up. Can anyone help?

Hi, Steve. I've seen several posts in the Powerbook discussions about PBs that were bought refurbished directly from Apple, or whose logic boards had been replaced by Apple with faster LBs (because LBs at the original speed were no longer available), that after the surgery would no longer start up from the discs that were originally shipped with them. I suspect that's what's going on in your case. In all likelihood you will need a retail full installer disc set for Panther or Tiger to get an OS installed on it.
You might try contacting Applecare, especially if the PB is still under a warranty or extended protection plan. Describe the situation, and explain that you suspect the original gray disc no longer recognizes the Powerbook as the model for which it was designed because internal hardware components (particularly the LB) may have been changed during the refurb process. Tell them you'll be happy to return the discs that were packaged with the refurb (so they can inspect them for damage), if they'll send you a full Panther install set instead. See how far this gets you. If it doesn't work out, you can buy a Panther universal installer set inexpensively from AppleRescue. You shouldn't have to, of course, but this may be what it takes to get you going again without undue delay and annoyance.

I just checked to see if the update to OS X Yosemite 10.10.1 solved any of the issues outlined in my previous post, and to my dismay, nothing has changed -- all of the previous problems persist.
My iMac (8) -- it's renamed itself eight times since the recent troubleshoot with the Apple tech rep -- shows up as a shared device in Finder on my MacBook Pro, but when I click on it, I cannot establish a connection using "Connect As". So I've attempted to connect using the menu "Go/Connect to Server...", using both (alternately) the iMac's name and IP address, to no avail. I get a message which reads: "There was a problem connecting to the server 'Peter's iMac (8)'. This server may not exist or it is unavailable at this time. Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and then try again."
Here's what I know:
The server -- Peter's iMac (8) does exist;
The server -- Peter's iMac (8) is available at this time;
The server name -- Peter's iMac (8) -- is correct, as specified in the system sharing preferences;
The server IP address is correct, as specified in the system sharing preferences;
The network connection is active when I attempt to connect.
I'm convinced the problems stem directly from the OS X Yosemite update. None of this was ever remotely an issue in the previous OS X's -- any of them. This is maddening! What can be done? Apple?? Anyone???

Well, if you've indeed tried EVERYTHING, then you'll need to bring your phone to Apple for evaluation.

What problem are you having with activating on a new machine? You just need to install and activate.

My hard drive crashed! How do I replace the hard drive?

My mid 2010 MacBook Pro 13" started making a horrible skipping/clicking noise when I insterted a disk. It wouldn't eject the disk so I powered it down to restart it, but when it came back on, all that appeared was a grey screen with a flashing file folder and a question mark in the folder. I read that this means my hard drive crashed (I tried holding C upon restart and the 2 or 3 other tips they gave me with no luck.) I having been looking through the forums to see what type of hard drive I need to replace it with, and found my answer...but, I am wondering if those hard drives come with the operating system? Do I need to purchase one and put it onto the new hard drive BEFORE installing it in the computer? Sorry if these are silly ?'s I am not technologically savvy at all!

It seems your had drive has passed away too.. It means you loose all your data you haven´t backed-up.
Chaging the hard drive is very simple, all you need is a new hard drive, internet connection for download the system again, and two types of screw drivers: A very small Philips and a very small Star screw.

After you install the new SSD or Hard Drive you have to install the system. To do that push the power button and hold the "OPTION" key on until a small menu to connect wireless network is shown.
Log on your wi-fi and it will start download the installer of the system. All you need is install the system again, and re-download all your apps even ones you boght in APP Store.

Follow these instructions. When you restore the iPod as the articles say the iPod will also be updated.

I have a 4s, and I've had that problem, too. I've tried every method mentioned on the boards. If Ellips's suggestion didn't work, try this, and please let me know if it worked:
(I did the following while the phone was connected to my pc...if that makes a difference.)
1. On the phone, go to Music.
2. Click "More."
3. Click "Shared."
4. My phone lists "iPhone" and my iTunes Libary. Try clicking the name of your music library.
5. Wait until the circle makes its loop.
The synch still failed to complete, but all of my music was on my iPhone, again. Whew.

Ok. You don't have to select your number. Just check your email under your "grey" number and then at the bottom of this page you will see the option "Start new conversations from". Select your number.
