Trying to activate my 3GS and the phone will not recognise the sim and will not activate

I have changed my call plan with my service provider from contract to PAYG and have just tried to upgrade my 3Gs to IOS 5.0.1. I have purchase a iPhone 4 and was using the 3Gs as back up.
I set the phone to factory restore as it was being sluggish and I felt a restore would be the best option. The restore went ahead but the phone will not accept that I have a valid sim in the phone and will not activate stating that the servers cannot activate the phone.
The sim is the new PAYG sim given to me by O2 and I had even arranged for the number to be transferred to the PAYG sim. I am at a loss to understand what has happened as the sim will work fine in an old 8gb Iphone 2g and other mobiles. I have not kept the old contract sim so I am unable to insert that to see if that was the problem.
How can I get my 3Gs acitated and working? Do I need to contact O2 or take the phone to an Apple store. Any advice would be appreciated.

I have a 16GB iPhone 3GS. Tried synching my phone through iTunes (11.0.1 I think... on a 2009 Macbook Pro). Now when I connect to iTunes, it says it does not recognise the content on my phone. Is this because my phone (and laptop) are too old?

I'm trying to free up space on my phone by removing [literally] thousands of old photos which were originally synched to the phone, because I had forgotten to uncheck the photos button when I synched it ages ago.
I have also tried synching it on my 24" iMac (running OSX Snow Leopard). But again, when I try restoring the phone through itunes, it says the file is corrupted. It sggests unplugging the device, and then plugging it in again. I have done this numerous times with no success.
I'm guessing it must be because my phone (and versions of iTunes, and OSX) are all too old.
Please can anybody help.

My used postpaid moto g was accidentally activated on verizon while I was trying to activate it on the tracfone boyp program. The phone was activated on tracfone but I could not dial the number *22890 to finish the activation. The setup wizard on the moto g will only let you activate the phone on verizon. Had tracfone cs rep on my landline phone and was waiting for verizon rep on the moto g. Waited 20 minutes but verizon rep never answered.
How and where do I get help from verizon to deactivate the account and release my meid number. Also how do I bypass the setup wizard so that I can activate my phone on TRACFONE? Thank you.There's no other way to track it other than Find My iPhone. All you can do is wait to see if it ever goes back online. The serial number will only help to identify it as yours if it is ever found, and the IMEI number would only allow your carrier to blacklist the phone so it couldn't be reactivated on their network, if the carrier offers this service.

I was trying to get the iOS 8.2 on my iPhone 5 but then it stopped and my phone is now on recovery mode I have pictures I need and they did not all fit on iCloud how can I use the phone again with ALL my pictures and videos without restoring it?
Contacts are designed to be synced to a supported application on the computer or a cloud service.
Pictures taken with the device are designed to regularly be copied off the device to a computer as would be done with any digital camera.
If you have failed to use the device as designed it may be too late to recovery anything.
Is the device regularly backed up to a computer via iTunes? If so, the most recent backup (when restored to a replacement iOS device) should contain all contacts and pictures as of when the backup was created. -
I had my iphone 4 locked to vodafone uk carrier. I connected the phone to itunes on my pc and tried to update the version to ios 6 through itunes. But it has been locked and asks for sim of previous carrier. how can i return to previous state?
You cannot return to previous state. The update re-locked the iPhone
to the original carrier. You must contact the original carrier to see if
they offer unlocking and if you qualify.
What does it say when you look at Settings=>General=>Carrier?
Be advised that if your iPhone had previously been hacked/modified/
jailbroken to work with other than original carrier, it may be impossible
for the original carrier to unlock it properly. -

If you try all these Steps and you still have issues... Then a Visit to an Apple Store or AASP (Authorized Apple Service Provider) is the Next Step... Be sure to make an appointment first... -

That means that the password you entered for your Apple ID was incorrect. This is the Activation Lock feature of the iPhone in action. Only the rightful owner, who knows the password for their Apple ID, can activate it. If you don't remember your Apple ID password you will have to reset it. Visit https://appleid.apple.com.

Hello! Just connected a used iPhone to iTunes for the first time. I'm trying to restore it to factory settings/default. The phone is connected via Wi-Fi and is updated to the most recent OS that the phone allows. The computer is also connected to the internet. But I still get the error: "itunes could not contact the iphone software update server because you are not connected to the internet." I also connected via iTunes and authorized the computer, but still have the same issue. Really, all I need to do is completely wipe the phone and start from scratch for safety's sake.

After i dod the above my ipone still does not work. It seems like all settings are gone. I tried the advice on one of the forums here which was turn the phone off, connect to the cable to the computer and not the phone, press the home button continously and connect the cable. Itunes at this point identified the phone and prompted to restore settings. It seemed to be doing something but now once I tried turning it on, its still not working.
start iTunes,
plug in your USB cable
switch off your iPhone
press holding home button(the round button in front of the Phone)
plug it on to the USB cable
keep holding the button
till iTunes says it found a iPhone in recovery mode
then click restore as a NEW iPhone
then sync!?

Why do you need to access your email? To reset the password?

I bought an iphone 4s off of kijiji and the phone is linked to the persons apple id, and i ant get in contact with them. is there a way i can activate my phone without having to jailbreak it.
You won't be able to activate it even if you do jailbrake it. There's no way around activation lock without the assistance of the prior owner.

- Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
- Try on another computer
- If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.
