Trying to diagnose a problem long-distance re: browser window

My elderly mother lives 900 miles away, and is having trouble opening her browser (Firefox). She is using a Powerbook G3, running 10.2.8 with 256 RAM, and uses Firefox for Internet access using a broadband connection through a cable modem.
Over the last week, I have managed to determine, over the phone, that the problem is not her modem or her connection - both of which are working properly. She turns on the Powerbook, and it boots up properly, and she eventually gets the desktop screen with the dock at the left edge. The dock includes an icon for Firefox. When she clicks on the Firefox icon, however, it "bounces" as if it is going to open, but the browser window never opens. I have had her try it on numerous occasions, and had a friend (who, unfortunately, doesn't know Macs) try it also, with no luck.
I have a feeling that somehow, last time she had the browser window open, she inadvertently moved it to a position where it is nearly invisible now (at the far edge of the screen, somewhere). She says she doesn't see it anywhere, but I'm not sure she is looking in the right places.
Does anyone have any suggestions for things I could tell her to try, in order to get an open browser window? Is there any key command that would automatically open and center the window, in case it is just moved out of view?
My Mom "just barely" knows how to open up the browser and her email (from within the browser), but otherwise is very new to the whole computer world, so my instructions to her have to be very basic and concrete. Any help that you can offer is appreciated!
Thanks -
Linda

Dogmom623, Welcome to the discussion area!
Have you had your mom try Safari?
BTW, next time you visit I suggest that you install Share My Desktop on your mom's machine. Then place the icon in the dock or on the desktop... somewhere easy for you mother to get to. Explain to your mother that all she has to do is start that application and then click the "Start Sharing" button.
From your Mac you can then use Chicken of the VNC to access your mom's Mac. Then you can see and control her Mac from your Mac.

  • My iPad 2 is not recognised by iTunes. I have tried all the steps as mentioned by the support communities. I have spent lot of time trying to diagnose the problem but no success yet. I need immediate help. I have my laptop with windows XP.

I have tried all the steps as suggested by the community partners i.e. uninstall/reinstall itunes (number of times). If I plug my ipad 2 on my office PC which has itunes, it is recognised immediately. My lap top does not show 'NEW HARDWARE FOUND" as iPad. It just says new hardware found and shows scanner and camera hardware recognised. In my opinion there could be programme file which is having conflict with ipad 2 recognisation. I am surprised to find that APPLE has not yet come out with straightforward steps for stting up procedures to avoid this recognition issue. It is waste of time and causing lot of aggravation among iPad 2 purchasers.

Sounds like it could be your computer and not Apple. Sounds like some registry issues and/or other underlying problems.
What are your computer specs? Year? Manufacturer? RAM? Processor (type & speed, # of cores), OS (32 bit? 64 bit? Professional? Standard?)

  • Upgraded to Firefox 29.0 (Mac) and can now no longer minimize browser window by double-clicking title bar. Please advise!

I recently upgraded to Firefox 29.0 (Mac) and can now no longer my minimize browser window into the dock by double-clicking the title bar. I need to be able to use this feature. Please advise!

I just upgraded to iTunes 8.0.1.11 too (XP) and am seeing the same behavior. The little mini controller in the taskbar no longer works. If you double click the icon in the system tray, you can restore the iTunes window.
On the Advanced preferences tab, select both the "Show iTunes icon in system tray"
and the "Minimize iTunes window to system tray" checkboxes. If only the "Show iTunes icon in system tray" is selected, you will not be able to restore the iTunes window and will have to use the task manager to kill iTunes.
Hope this gets fixed, I found the task bar controller very handy for pausing/starting/volume control/etc.

Support problem. The adviser tried to diagnose the failure of an application called JOTNOT PRO to update. He said he'd phone back at 8pm. I pick up his call at 8pm. Electronic voice: thank you for calling apple. We are now closed" So now I have 2 problems: the adviser had got me to reset so bye bye wifi passwords and settings. And then when he phones back as we agreed he's not actually on the phone, it's just a voice saying Apple Support is now closed! What on earth is going on at apple support I wonder.
Anyway, the original problem: an application called JotNot Pro fails to update. The error message says something like "you cannot update this cos either you bought it with a different Apple ID or somebody else bought it."
    Neither applies. Can anybody help?
PS. This is my first approach to the support community so please bear with me!

You might have better luck contacting the app's support or developers.

  • HT1338 I have a problem with the aspect ratio of photos as they appear on iPhoto.  They are not correct.  On the original photo people were fat and squat.  I tried rotating and they became long and narrow.  Neither correct.

Sounds more like a problem with your Display Resolution than iPhoto.
Go to: Apple / System Preferences / Displays and in the Resolutions list select,
    1280 x 800 if you have a 13" MacBook Pro
    1400 x 900 if you have a 15" MacBook Pro

  • Long-distance problems with 7912 series

I'm able to configure the clients 7912 phone with full long-distance access without entering a code. The problem is this. Once I configure the phone for the client to enter the access codes, it says "long-distance redialling or dialling from the second line is currently unavailable. Please use your primary extension." There is only one extension on that phone and it is the primary.
    Any help would be appreciated.

  • Need Some Brain Storming Help WIth a Long Distance Mail Problem

I would really appreciate anyones input on this...
Here's the situation. I'm trying to solve a mail problem for my somewhat elderly Mother. The biggest problem is that she is 3800 miles away from me and nowhere near any sort of help or tech support (Rural Alaska) so I'm trying to sort this out over the phone.
Anyway, she somehow screwed up her mail. All of a sudden the mail she sends comes from MY account! It shows up in my mailbox as having been sent by me. She is using an iBook G4 that I gave her a year or so ago and I suppose it's possible that somehow my mail account was on there somewhere (?). It's like she accidentally switched users or something.
I have sent her Email to her normal .Mac email address and it does indeed show up in her mailbox when I check the web mail. She is running Tiger and I'm running Leopard.
I just can't for the life of me figure out what she would have done and I'm hoping that someone might have an idea. She says that the font sizes all changed as well which leads me to believe that she is indeed using my old settings and mail account.
Once again, any help really appreciated. I'm heading out of town for a week and she really depends on her email. I'm trying desperately to get this solved before I leave. Thanks!

It looks like Mail has reset its preferences, including the account settings. What follows is a more thorough explanation that should allow you to determine whether that’s really what happened and what your options would be in that case. I’ll provide the full instructions I usually provide to solve this problem when having direct access to the computer, even though you may find some of them not practical or unnecessary.
Under some circumstances (e.g. lack of available disk space, filesystem corruption, repeated crashes), Mail may discard the current ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist preferences file and create a new one. This file is where all the account settings are stored. As a result, all the non-.Mac account settings are lost. If you have a .Mac account, however, that account would appear to have been preserved because Mail would set it up automatically using the System Preferences > .Mac settings — but may result in a different .Mac account being automatically set up if for some reason the System Preferences > .Mac settings differ from what until then were the Mail account settings...
What’s the capacity and space available on the startup disk? Take a look at the comments about disk space in the following article, in case they apply to this case:
Problems from insufficient RAM and free hard disk space
Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what’s it all about?
After having fixed all the filesystem issues, if any, and ensuring that there’s enough space available on the startup disk (a few GB, plus the space needed to make a backup copy of the Mail folder), quit Mail if it’s running, and make a backup copy of the ~/Library/Mail folder (e.g. by dragging it to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down), just in case something else goes wrong while trying to solve the problem. This folder is where all your mail is stored.
There are at least three ways to restore the account settings:
    (1) Restore ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist from a backup if you have one. Mail shouldn’t be running while you do this.
    (2) Set up your mail accounts again (you may want to quit Mail and trash the new com.apple.mail.plist first to start over). If given the option to import existing mailboxes or something like that, don’t. Just enter the account information and Mail will automagically rediscover the data in ~/Library/Mail/ when done. You’ll also have to re-configure some of the Mail > Preferences settings. For spam-related security reasons, the first thing you should do is go to Preferences > Viewing and disable Display remote images in HTML messages if it’s enabled.
    (3) Mail may have renamed the old preferences file to com.apple.mail.plist.saved. If that’s the case, you may try trashing the new com.apple.mail.plist and renaming the old com.apple.mail.plist.saved back to com.apple.mail.plist. Again, be sure Mail isn’t running while doing this. Given the circumstances, there exists the possibility that com.apple.mail.plist.saved became corrupt, but that often is not the case and the settings can usually be restored by just renaming the file back to com.apple.mail.plist.
As a side effect of re-creating com.apple.mail.plist, Mail might rename Outbox (which is where messages waiting to be sent are stored) to Delivered. The name of that mailbox is actually a misnomer, as it would contain messages (if any) that couldn’t be delivered for some reason. You can delete that mailbox if you wish.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. That is, ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder, i.e. /Users/username/Library.

  • "A long distance company access code is required"

I just spent half an hour on the phone (the landline) to fix an issue with the DSL setup, and during that time the call was a bit fuzzy. The customer support agent tested the line after we hung up and called back to let me know she didn't find any problems, so I tried putting a different filter on the line in case that was a problem. I called my wife's cell phone so that we could check clarity and then got this message: "a long distance company access code is required". Ok, weird. I called my own cell phone, which has the same area code as the landline, and got the same message. I thought I had nationwide calling? What's the deal? I tried calling customer support again, but the automated support said I would need to have someone come out and check the line at the risk of having to pay charges if the problem was on our side- since I'm not sure the computer knew what my problem actually was, I didn't want to risk it.
We just activated everything today. Anyone have a clue what'd going on?

A little-known secret is that the Verizon Access Code (dialed before the number) is 1016963 .
    Out-of-state (but expensive), try the AT&T Access Code -- 1010288  .
    For DSL-service without a dial-tone, ask for "Dry-loop Service".
With DSL, try paying Verizon $7.99 per month for "Inside Wire Maintenance" -- otherwise, when there is a problem with the flaky DSL and a service-call is necessary, they may claim that the problem is in your inside wiring, and charge you $100 for each Service Call !
DSL degrades the further your location is from the "hub-facility".
The maximum distance from the DSL "hub-facility" is about 18,000-feet (as the wire-travels) -- anything beyond that, and you may experience frequent drop-outs !

  • Cannot Diagnose Battery Problem - Pavillion DM3 - repost after no response

    Hello,
I have some kind of problem between my Pavillion DM3 and its battery, but cannot figure out where it lies. The notebook will not operate without AC power. When I plug it into AC, it boots and is usable. The charging light on the right front of the notebook flashes regularly. When I mouse over the power icon on the toolbar, it indicates that the battery is charging but that it is at 0% of capacity. It remains in this state as long as AC is available and the computer is turned on. The light continues to flash when the notebook is powered off. When I start up the HP diagnostic software on the machine and try to check the battery health, it runs for a while and then tells me that the battery cannot be detected. It then advises me to remove and reseat the battery. Needless to say, nothing changes once I do this. I have tried repeatedly. For what it's worth (are you listening HP?) , the error message does not suggest powering down the machine prior to removing and reseating the battery. I was careful to do so but wonder what the consequences would be if someone removed the battery without first turning off the machine.
I would consider buying a new battery, but I have no way to assure myself that the problem is in the battery and not in the interfacing circuitry on the PC. With no idea what it will cost to resolve this problem, I am at a loss as to whether repair is an option, or whether I'm better off putting the cost of repair towards a replacement notebook. Can anyone help me with this.
    Thank you.

After a long wait, someone replied to my earlier post suggesting that my problem was with the battery itself. I went to eBay and found an inexpensive (~$35) battery which now appears to be working fine. By the time I removed the old battery, it was literally swollen. I thoiught it might be ready to break open. All seems well, but I'm glad I didn't pay HP the $49 to "diagnose" the problem and/or whatever their full freight would have been for a replacement battery.
If anyone from HP is reading this, I have two problems with HP. First is the poor quality of their products, and second is their poor support for out-of-warranty products. I went months with no response to two posts on t he user forums. Instead of trying to scare people into buying genuine HP ink, HP should improve the quality of its product and offer better support.

    (1) Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility installer file (msicuu2.exe) from the following Major Geeks page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page).
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
Here's a screenshot showing the particular links on the page that you should be clicking:
After clicking one of the circled links, you should be taken to another page, and after a few seconds you should see a download dialog appear for the msicuu2.exe file. Here's a screenshot of what it looks like for me in Firefox:
Choose to Save the file. If the dialog box does not appear for you, click the link on the page that says "CLICK HERE IF IT DOES NOT". Here's a screenshot of the page with the relevant link circled:
When the dialog appears, choose to save the file.
    (2) Go to the Downloads area for your Web browser. Doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file and follow the prompts to install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (If you're on a Windows Vista or Windows 7 system and you get a Code 800A0046 error message when doubleclicking the msicuu2.exe file, try instead right-clicking on the msicuu2.exe file and selecting "Run as administrator".)
    (3) In your Start menu click All Programs and then click Windows Install Clean Up. The Windows Installer CleanUp utility window appears, listing software that is currently installed on your computer.
    (4) In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any iTunes entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
    (5) Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

  • How can I download my issues with Reader's Digest when each time a pop appears and reads " the item you tried to buy is no longer available"?

I can no longer download my purchased Reader's Digest magazine since August as it requires updating the RD app. So when i try to download the RD app a pop up appears and reads " the item you tried to buy is no longer available". What does this mean and what do I do? I have 2 pending reader's digest issues that needs to be downloaded.

I don't have an answer for you but it may help to have a look at the "More Like This" section at the far right of this page. Reading those additional threads may get you some idea of the actual issue and how to resolve it. It could be that problems were found with the app and it was temporarily pulled for some reason which may be the reason for the "the item you tried to buy is no longer available" message.

  • Invalid "The item you tried to buy is no longer available." message.

I have been trying to sort this out with Apple tech support (TrackID: 11905780) but most of the "solutions" clearly reveal that the tech support person has not read my request so I thought I would try here. I have bought "G-Map US & Canada" quite a while ago and have downloaded it several times as it was updated or I had just deleted it because I didn't need it at the time. Currently anyone can navigate to the app and purchase it for $50. But when I click on the app with the account that I originally downloaded it with I get the message "The item you tried to buy is no longer available." It seems clear to me that this message is invalid as the app is clearly still available on the store. I have also had a rental that expired before I finished downloading it that constantly downloads but will never finish because it always shows that I don't have the right to play the video (I started watching it and decided I didn't like it and stopped the download and deleted it). Anyone else having this problem? Seems like something Apple tech support should be able to fix but, alas, they have not been helpful, yet.

I've noticed the same thing with no word from Apple about why this is occurring. Maybe it is coincidental, but this problem began when I downloaded Quicktime 7.1. In fact, I've noticed several quirky things since that download. For instance, most of the movies in the Disney section have been eliminated. What gives?

  • What is the email for the covent garden apple store (UK), if not apple uk. I am in canada and need to contact THIS store (for an insurance claim) and the phone system won't work for a long distance call.

I am currently living in Canada (but I am from the UK).
I lost my iphone 4S 32GB a couple of weeks ago and I need to try and prove to my insurance company that the iphone was a 32GB.
I was told by an apple store near where i live that the original store where i purchased my iphone may be able to find records on my phone and print out a receipt for me. I can't get through to the Covent Garden apple store in london (where i brought the phone), because the automated phone system that apple uses doesn't seem to like long distance phone calls.
Is there an email for the covent garden store, or for apple uk? I tried toi chat to an apple advisor online, but because of my location i got put through to apple USA.

I noticed an error for some reason, the last two characters should have been do rather than co.

  • Accessing Oracle DB at multiple location(long distance)

    Hi guys,
I have a situation where i need to connect to oracle database which are at long distance(say singapore and UAE). Structure of database is same.
Which is the better way to implement.
    1. Using seperate connection for database
    Connection conSingapore
    Connection conUae
    and use diff Statements
    or
    2. replicating database at single location and accessing centralized database.
Second option is easy as far as java program is concern but what abt replication process? This may cause synchronization(data inconsistancy) problem. Can we use DB link or Materialized views? Has anybody heard tht?
Is there any better way to overcome such situation.
Please help incase anybody has good idea.
    Thanks in advance

If I get your intention correct, I would advise to pass in the URL of the db at runtime. That is if you are using the thin driver, you can use the following :
DriverManager.getConnection(url, userName, passWord);you can specify the Database details on runtime so that the connection to the corresponding DB is made.
    GoodLuck,
