Trying to migrate mail folders

I have an iMac and I use apple mail with 2 mail accounts (plus iCloud). In the older account I have many saved mail folders that I want to either migrate to iCloud or my other new account. Can this be done? If so, how?
Thanks I hope!

Export or save the messages in OE to a set of eml files in some folder in Explorer. Next, create a folder in TB under Local Folders, then drag the eml files from the Explorer folder and drop them in the TB folder.

If you used migration assistant then it probably created a new Login user and placed the migrated files under it.

  • What do you recommend if local mail folders empty after migration?

I have successfully migrated user data from old macbook to new macbook (both mavericks). However, my local mail folders are only empty folders. Did anything go wrong? I could simply export and import them from the old macbook, I know. I can probably also easily retrieve them from my backups. I just wonder whether anyone else had experienced this and what you recommend as best procedure now. Looking forward to your replies!

    Oops... found the solution:
I select folder by folder, go to the mailbox menu and select rebuild. Mails are all appearing again!

  • Migrate mail from 10.6.8 to 10.7.5

I have an extremely simple requirement, to manually migrate my mail from Snow leopard (10.6.8) to Lion (10.7.5). Explaining my situation below-
I have an iMac(originally 10.6.8) and for multiple reasons, I chose to upgrade to Lion (10.7.5) rather than Mountain Lion. From snow leopard I have taken each and every type of back in the form of the folders and attached prefernce files, for example, as a backup of keychains, I have the keychains folder from the main library as well as the user library, similarly for address book, safari and mail. So in case of mail, I have copied, the mail folder from the main library, mail and mail downloads folder from the user library and the com.apple.mail.plist from the preferences folder in the user library. After taking the said backups I have formatted my machine and installed the operating system lion, 10.7.5
Listing details of mail accounts, I have five live(Microsoft, live, outlook, hotmail, whatever you call them) accounts and one solitary gmail account. All these accounts are on POP protocol(simply because I want/need a copy of mails, communications and downloaded attachments to be on the mail server for emergency situations(such as this))
Now the issues begin, speaking strictly in terms of mail. Listing steps taken and their results,
    1) Action - Followed the direct copy method listed in the link, (http://macs.about.com/b/2011/08/05/moving-your-snow-leopard-mail-to-lion.htm)
Copied the following folders, mail folder from main library(I.e. under macintosh hd), mail and mail downloads folder from the user library, com.apple.plist from the preferences folder in the user library. Note. a) this is a fresh install of lion, the mail app hasn't been executed even once. b) I deleted the v2 folder already located inside the mail folder in the user library, because it was suggested in the comments section in the link above.
Result - After the said process, I started mail(for the first time) mail detected the old structure, said it needed to reindex. After the process I could see all my accounts, all my mail, smart folders, all the attachments... Blissful. "BUT!!" when I hit get new mail, the mess begins. Mail starts to "RE" download ALL the mails AGAIN, 8000 mails, 7.5 gb worth of attachments.
    2) Action - after the above debacle, quit mail and studied its folder structures in the user library as well as the main library, compared this folder structure of my snow leopard mail backup and manually tried COPYING ".mbox" in their respective new folder locations. Eg. Copied, "inbox.mbox" of account "x" from my snow leopard backup to the newly created folder structure in lion (I.e. inside the v2 folder, inside the account x folder.) also copied each individual preference file like MailAccounts.plist and all and copied them to their new location.
Result - the above process was an even bigger disaster. It corrupted my basic mail app. I had to perform an erase and reinstall the os.
    3) action - after the fresh reinstall, and doing further research, I set up accounts INDIVIDUALLY (I.e. via Add account) this time "importing" each individual mailboxes via import command, once imported, I placed the emails contained within, to their respective inboxes.
Result - the above process too shows all my mails again, but when I hit get new mail, mail starts to redownload the **** mails from the server AGAIN!!
I have tried the above processes umpteen number of times in different variations, such as only one account at a time or importing only one inbox at a time. Still no luck. This a very frustrating issue. I have been manually migrating mail for the past 5 years. This new v2 folder is ******* everything up.
Note. Checked "duplicate mails" in lion help, which told me that duplicate mails get downloaded via the POP protocol if coming from an older version of OSx.
So is there a way I can make my mail lion compatible? Some software, some plugin? The entire world seemed to migrate mail, why not me?
A solution would be divine, as I am a designer with live projects and attachments stuck in the mail... Temporarily using mail from my iPad as my main machine which also has started acting like a ***** after ios 7, which is another headache all together.
Need help please, anyone on the forum with knowledge on how to solve this issue would have a special place in my heart besides a million thanks in advance.
    Thanks a million in advance,
    Abu Suda.

Try reindexing the mailbox. This can take awhile if you have a lot of mail.
    Reindex messages.
If that doesn't work try deleting MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded3.
    Quit the application.
You need to look in your user Library. Either hold down the option key while using the Finder “Go To Folder” command and select your user Library in your home folder or use the Finder “Go To Folder” command and enter ~/Library/Mail/V2/Mail Data/MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded3.  Move the file to your desktop.
Open the application and test. If it works okay, delete the file from the desktop.
If the application is the same, return thefile to where you got it from, overwriting the newer ones.
If you prefer to make your User library permanently visible, use the Terminal command found below.
    Show User Library
You might want to bookmark the command. I had to use it again after I installed 10.8.5. I have also been informed that if you drag the user library to Finder it will remain visible.

I just finished migrating a client from Google Apps to Microsoft Exchange Online using the IMAP option in the Microsoft Online Services Migration Tool.
I added the mailboxes by creating a CSV file [i.e. GoogleApps(Gmail)_Mailboxes.csv] in the following format:
    SourceIdentity,SourceServer,SourceLoginID,SourcePassword,TargetIdentity
    [email protected],imap.gmail.com,[email protected],P@ssword1,[email protected]
    [email protected],imap.gmail.com,[email protected],P@ssword2,[email protected]
    [email protected],imap.gmail.com,[email protected],P@ssword3,[email protected]
Then I created a custom folder map XML file [i.e. GoogleApps(Gmail)_FolderMap.xml] to map the Google Apps (Gmail) labels to the appropriate Exchange (Outlook) mailbox folders and create those that didn't exist (i.e. Important, Starred, Follow up,
Misc, Priority) as sub-folders under the Inbox:

Additionally, I had to tell the Internet E-mail Mailbox Migration Wizard to use the "Individual Account Credentials" option since I was able to specify each account password in the CSV file when adding the mailboxes to Microsoft Online Services Migration
    Tools console.
Just to note, the users had to manually export their contacts to a CSV file and calendars to iCal (ICS) files in order to import those items into Outlook.
I hope this will benefit others since Microsoft doesn't seem to have a custom, specifically defined migration strategy for this scenario.  With Google Apps being in direct competition with BPOS/Office365, I assumed that Microsoft would have a simple
strategy using something like ActiveSync to facilitate the migration of email, contacts, calendar entries, etc.  Hopefully we'll see something along those lines become available in a future release of the migration tools.

  • How to Import Apple Mail Folders on Second User Account

I purchased a new MBP after the old one failed.  At the Apple Store I set up a User ID for the new MBP.  I then used the Migration utility later on to bring in all my data from my late MBP.  This included all my Mail folders.  Now I want to get a selection of those Mail Folders to the New User ID.  I have tried exporting a folder to a USB flash drive, told Apple Mail to import it in the new ID but without success.  Is there another way to get the selected mail folders over to the new ID?  Currently I have way too much mail on the old migrated ID.  I have been running DupeZap to try and reduce the duplicate messages but that's another story.  I just want to get the good folders (no duplicates) over to the new User ID.  I seem to recall that back with Tiger you could use a drop box or public folder to pull files/data from one user ID to another.  Is this still possible or is there another option I can try?
    Thanks for advice and guidance.

If both system are using the IMAP mail provider all you have to do is setup the connection to the mail server and all the emails and folders will be copied down to the windows computer. That is what IMAP is for. The mail stays on the server, and can be store
on the local computer also, and when you connect to the server with another device, computer, phone or pad, all the mail with folders gets copied to the other device.
But I think some of your mail was gotten using POP so it is not longer on the server.
Or you have emails in local folder only and they would be on the server. But you can create folder on the server in one mail program, or on the mail web interface and then copy those emails into those folder on the server byt copying them in one of the email
programs. Then when you log on with the other device all of them will be downloaded to the other device.
Other alternative:- You can find various solutions on having a google search
for your problem. Or you can have a look at the following link: Apple mail to Outlook Windows

  • Mail: Consolidate multiple mail folders

I have been using macs for as long as I can remember. I used to use Eudora and eventually migrated to OS X Mail and imported my data. Needless to say I have a lot of emails now. The problem is sometime last year I had an issue with OS X Mail and made a couple backups of my mail folder data (poorly planned). Now I have two or three copies of mail folders which do not contain a full set of data.
Does anyone have suggestions on how to consolidate the multiple OS X Mail data sets into a single set? I don't care about the folder structures I have. I just want to ensure I have a full set of received and sent mail with as few duplicates as possible.
I tried importing all folders into a fresh 10.9 Mavericks install using Mail but for whatever reason (5 days later...) it almost doubled the size of the original folders. Normally, I wouldn't care as I had a 1 TB disk in my MBP. But I just got a new Haswell MBP with just a 256 GB drive. Space is at a premium.
I searched the internet and even the discussions here without much luck. There was reference to an AppleScript that would highlight duplicates but that tool doesn't seem to be working any longer.
    Thank you,
    Jonathan

Thanks for replying. Sorry, I didn't explain what I did clearly enough. I literally made copies in the Finder of my ~/Library/Mail folder... so I have three folders of roughly 20 GB (yes, 20 GB!!) each at different stages of completeness. I could MAYBE just use one but I'm not comfortable doing that quite yet if there is a different solution. When I imported, Mail took 5 days and the new ~/Library/Mail folder is 145 GB. I haven't a clue what it did to inflate it so much.
I'm probably a crazy hoarder (ok, definitely) but when I have emails back to 1996 or something it's hard to not at least try for full population.
I tried Mail Store Home (suggested by Steve Gibson @ GRC.com) and it was great. It pulled in a ton of emails (into proprietary database IIRC) and I exported to EML. But OS X Mail imports in a fashion that creates a zillion folders. Also not helpful.
I'm also dealing with 201,000 emails, manual anything isn't ideal... I'm absolutely a hoarder.

  • Trouble syncing Mail folders/subfolders

Hi to anyone who reads this.
Not sure where to turn for help right now. Apple Tech Support says this is a .Mac problem; .Mac says it's an Apple Tech Support issue. I'm in the inferno.
Like a lot of people, I download a lot of e-mails from the server and put them into folders and subfolders (and sometimes sub-subfolders). Some folders are important; others are not. It is critical that I have access to these important folders over the holidays when I'm not at my iMac. I have a .Mac account, so I should be able to do that. But when I try to sync, the folders don't show up (or...worse...only a few of them show up). For those of you who want to read on, please do.
I initially tried this sync with my folders about two months ago. It didn't work -- it wasn't critical to me then, so I didn't pursue it. What happened then was that I dragged the main folder(s) with several subfolders (and lots of e-mails) from where they sat in my mail program to below the globe icon for my .Mac account. The colorful ball whirled for quite a while. Then I went to the .Mac site, opened my mail and found only a few of the folders and subfolders had transferred. I was frustrated, but I stopped worrying about it.
Fast forward to today. I have a very strong need to have access to those e-mails while I'm away. I have tried to sync many times in the last day. Most recently, I have manually sync'd everything, so I know the sync works for my iCal and address book (although strangely, the automatic one looked like it worked, but it didn't). Nevertheless, the calendar and address books are completely up-to-date. I double-checked that the memory wasn't a problem. It's not. I even increased the storage allotment for mail to 700.
Trying everything I could think of, I went to the .Mac site, opened my folders, deleted the old (incompletely transferred and NEVER effectively synchronized despite autosyncing) folders from a few months ago and started over. (By the way, not that it matters, but the main folders under the globe icon are white, not blue, and the subs are blue...not sure what that means.) I have tried in many ways to get the folders I created in my Mail program to transfer to .Mac by placing them under the globe icon and then pressing the sync button. Nothing seems to work.
Help. Do you know what is wrong? Do you know what department at Mac should be helping me? What else do you need to know to help answer this one? I really need those e-mails -- far, far too many to resend to myself to put on the server over the holidays. Hundreds!! All very important for a conference I am planning.
Thanks so much!!! By the way, I'm a 10.4.3 user. I wish I could tell you whether this happened before or after the upgrade this fall, but honestly, I just don't remember.

    Richard Eitel wrote:
I have an iMac with many mail folders containing many emails. I just purchased a MacBook. Is there a way to transfer the mail folders and all the existing emails onto the MacBook
the easiest is to use Migration Adssistant (it's in Applications/Utilities). It lets you transfer all your user settings, not just Mail. If you are interested in Mail ONLY, copy the entire folder /users/username/library/mail and the file /users/username/library/preferences/com.apple.mail.plist. when you start Mail after that it will look just as it did on the old computer.
and once that is accomplished is there a way I can keep both mail accounts in sync?
if you use an IMAP email account, this is automatic. if you use POP, it's impossible.
I would like to be able to file or delete an email on one computer and have the same action take place on the other computer.

  • Moving "On My Mac" Mail folders to another account not working

    Hi,
I recently bought a new iMac (2 weeks ago). I originally setup 3 mail accounts on the main user ID (created by the migration assistant software from my old laptop. I imported the mail folders manually from the old Thunderbird and all was good.
I then decided to leave the main user account for my wife, create my own user account and put mu POP mail account in my user account. Again all good.
Now the problem, I want to move the "On My MAC" mailboxes from the main user account to my accounts mail. No matter what I do, it doesn't work.
1st attempt: I exported the mailboxes to the public folder, changed users and tried to import them. It seemed to work (selecting Apple Mail), saying the mailboxes would be in the Imported mailbox but nothing at all shows up even after restarting mail (it doesn't even show "on my mac" I checked the actual Mailboxes directory and only the outbox is there.
2nd attempt: I tried copying the mailboxes from their original directory on the disk to the new accounts mail folder. After a restart, the mailboxes appear under "on my max" but there are no mail items showing ?
Can anyone help, it's driving me mad !!!

    Hi Glenn,
Might I please dredge up this older topic?
I want to "import' or "transfer" my Mail accounts and many, many mailboxes from my EXISTING laptop to a new Lion BUILD that I am constructing on an external device.  Both are 10.7.4 of course.
I have been constructing a fresh BUILD of 10.7.4 on an external device--reinstalling all my apps as oppposed to a Migration, which brings everything across in one big sloppy mess. I have issues with some defunkt HP software that won't fully uninstall--and I just want to start fresh this time.  (there's remnants panther, tiger, leopard, and SL from years of migration)   My rebuild is not live yet, it doesn't have any accounts.   I did this already on another 8core I use for work--performance and stability has increased.
As for MAIL, I understand everything in your post about local vs iMap.  In my case, I have about 25GB of mailboxes and attachment both On My Mac and on iCloud.  (I realize this is redundant and that iClould keeps a local copy).
Of course when I startup from the external BUILD device (its on a Lacie portable FW drive), launch MAIL and then try to import mailboxes, there is no way to see the main Library on the EXISTING OS--so I can't navigate to that that Mail folder that contains the stuff.  I'm interested in knowing if there's any Console or Terminal command that will reveal that Library folder on my laptop.
Or I'll do it the way you describe above, though I'm a bit suspicious.  My gut tells me I'm better off importing the mailboxes--because I would be concerned there's other Preferences and supporting files that wouldn't get moved in that big transfer.  Will all my attachments come accoss?
While we're on the subject, any posts or white papers you can direct me to that will show me how to move my iPhoto libary in this similar manner?
    thanking you in advance Glenn

  • How to migrate mail from cabinets in GW 8.x to Gmail

    Hi,
I've got a Groupwise 8.x email account and my only access is from a web browser. This account is being deactivated, and so I want to migrate all my email to my Gmail account. Through the settings of my Gmail account, I was able to IMPORT email from the Inbox of my Groupwise account. But, that step did not export any mail contained in my cabinets.
I found some help online that showed how to EXPORT mail from the cabinet folders, but you have to have the actual Email client to do this, and I only have access from my browser. I can export mail items one at a time, but since I have many email items, I figured that there has to be a better way.
Can anyone offer me some sugggestions and/or links to help?
    Thank you in advance.

Well it does require a little bit of configuration. "Little" things like
pointing it to the GroupWise server, which depending on the size of the
system may well be the same host name as used for webaccess, and the
default post office port is 1677. What tripped you up in connecting?

Well you do have an account that you are trying to get mail out of, that
is the account you would be using, selecting the IMAP option and
pointing it to the GroupWise server.
And you have an account you are trying to get your mail into, your GMail
account, that you'd also have to connect to via IMAP.

Select all messages from a cabinet folder, Drag and drop them into
GMAIL. Rinse and repeat per folder.
