Trying to update my iPhone 3Gs. Phone is now stuck with a picture of cd and usb picture on front of phone

It states that it is stuck in recovery mode. I am getting an error message with a code 1603. Could someone please help. Also, is there any way to not lose my personal information? I am not computer savy...please help!

Type 1603 into the search bar at the top of this page by "Support". It will tell you what is going on.
All of your personal information should be on your computer, as you should be syncing regularly.

You need iTunes 10.0 or greater to update your phone...iTunes isn't confused at all. If you're on a Mac, you'll need OS X 10.5.8 or greater to update iTunes to 10.0 or greater.

edit the hosts file on your computer and remove any lines that contain gs.apple.com. Disable your antivirus and firewall.

I tried to update my iphone 3GS with IOS6 and the update was incomplete. It then said retry so I did and it synced with my daughters ipod touch causing me to lose ALL of my information. If the screen shows a plug going to itunes, then you have no choice, It's in recovery mode. You'll be given the chance to restore from a backup either from itunes or icloud.
I assume when you got the message to update (was this for the ios or update some apps?), that was before the device when dead. At any rate, doing a restore does not change the ios.

are you able to see the apps on the home screen? If so, it's most likely an issue with your carrier
This is also an issue that can appear on devices that have been modified in an unauthorized manner (not judging, just saying)

Downgrading the iOS is not supported, and likely has caused the problems you are experiencing.
