Tutorial: Using Live to drive Logic -- I could use proofreading, testing help

Hi all,
I've written a little scratchpad blog post to remind myself how I got Live to treat Logic essentially as a rewire slave (donning aspestos suit in preparation for flames).  The process works fine for me now, but I've been looking at this writeup for so long I'm not sure I'm seeing all the mistakes I've made and would love it if a few of you ran through it and let me know about things I've goofed up.
Here's a link to the post -- http://www.haven2.com/index.php/archives/using-ableton-live-to-drive-logic-pro-x
And here's a little teaser to give you a sense of what's in the post -- the full post has lotsa pictures and narrative and is pretty long to post here.
Overview
The goal is to use MIDI coming from Live to control instruments in Logic, and get that audio back into Live.  There are some interesting tricky bits, but this is where you're headed and this diagram may be all you need.
Resources
Here are links to two project files which you are welcome to try out as a template.  They're set up to do 14 channels of audio and MIDI.  Why not 16, you ask?  Because this template includes a B3 organ instrument in Logic, which consumes 3 MIDI channels all by itself.  The configuration steps to set up the environment are still required, but you should then be able to load these up as a starting point.
Zip archive of the Logic and Live templates
(I had to fiddle with file permissions -- let me know if you run into problems opening the files)
Here's a link to the Soundflower audio shim that you need to install to get sound back from Logic into Live

Quick Checklist
After a few times through, this checklist may serve as a useful shorthand reminder of the steps that are required.  It's basically a table of contents of the rest of the post.
Disconnect all external MIDI devices
Install Soundflower
Set up the IAC bus
Click the “Device is online” button
Optional: rename the port
Open Live first.
Configure Preferences in Live
Configure Audio Preferences in Live to recognize Soundflower as its audio input
Configure MIDI Preferences in Live to recognize the IAC Driver
Open a new or existing project in Live
Drag External Instruments into empty MIDI tracks
Configure the External Instrument MIDI output(s) to send it to Logic via the IAC driver
Configure the External Instrument’s Audio input to receive audio back from Logic
Open Logic
Configure global preferences in Logic
Un-tick “Control surface follows track selection” in Logic Pro > Control Surface > Preferences
Set the global Audio Output device to Soundflower
Open a new or existing Logic project
Set project-level configuration preferences (only required for multitrack work)
Select “Auto demix by channel if multitrack recording
Configure the project to only listen to MIDI from the IAC MIDI input
Open the Environment window
Select the “Click and ports” layer
Delete the connection between the “sum” and “input notes” objects
Create a connection between the inbound IAC MIDI port and the “input notes” object
Create or select Software Instrument track(s)
Assign MIDI channels to correspond with the MIDI-To settings in Live
Record-arm the track(s)
Switch back to Live
Test the configuration
Reestablish external MIDI controllers in Live
Oddities:
Assign B3 Organ instruments FIRST, and only to MIDI channels 1,2 and 3
Drummer tracks don’t respond to external MIDI
Debugging:
All channels sound in Logic if any channel is record-armed in Live
Two channels sound in Logic, the external-keyboard channel and the record-armed one
Instruments sound in Logic even if no Live tracks are record-armed
Instruments stop responding to MIDI as new channel strips are added in Logic
That's it for the teaser.  The rest of the post expands on these topics.
Thanks in advance, and happy new year!

The iPad does not have an accessible file system so you cannot use an external drive to copy files back and forth. You can use an external drive to store movies and play them on your device.

  • Logic or Live? Can Logic be used in a live setting similar to Abelton Live?

    Hello,
I'm a musician/engineer that wants to start mixing recordings and playing tracks in live performances. I've heard and seen Live do great things so I'm wondering: Can I use Logic and different areas of it [namely, the environment] to create live mixes that are made, recorded, triggered and/or produced live?
If you have experience with Live, would you say it is easy to learn?
If you play live shows using Logic, would you say a one-man show is possible?
I want to do this kind of one-man thing with my recordings and mix them live in a manner similar to Daft Punk or Justice. I'm sure they use multiple things but could something be done with all the softsynths and stuff in Logic? Could a song be sequenced in logic, with triggers setting off different loops and midi notes using TouchTracks?
Any help or examples with either program would be greatly appreciated.

Can I use Logic and different areas of it namely, the environment to create live mixes that are made, recorded, triggered and/or produced live?
Not in the same way. While Logic has some tools, it doesn't have a feature set optimised for this in the way Live does.
If you have experience with Live, would you say it is easy to learn?
Yes, it rocks, and it comes with tutorials which are great at getting you started. Download the demo, it's fully functional apart from save, so it gives you a great oppurtunity to play with it.
Live requires a slight context shift if you are used to traditional DAWs, but once you get it, you'll love it - or you won't get it at all, in which case it might baffle you.
I have both Logic and Live specifically because their feature sets complement each other really well - Logic is a true DAW for recording, mixing and detailed production, Live is a great improvisational tool, great for live use and performance, great for generating material and so on.
Live really is the way to go for this stuff imo.
If you play live shows using Logic, would you say a one-man show is possible?
I can't answer that, because I don't know what your requirements are. If Peter Gabrial can run his shows from Logic, I'm sure you can
But if you want to "DJ" and improvise your sets, rather than just play back set backing tracks - it's gotta be Live.
Could a song be sequenced in logic, with triggers setting off different loops and midi notes using TouchTracks?
Yes, Touchtracks will let you improvise MIDI in this way but they won't do audio (unless you load everything into samplers). Again, I recommend playing with it to see whether it fits your needs. If you are only using MIDI or virtual instruments, then touch tracks could feasibly do this (I used to have great fun with this). But it's no Live, though

  • Any tutorial for Live RTMP Dynamic Streaming using Strobe Media Playback?

Any tutorial for Live RTMP Dynamic Streaming using Strobe Media Playback anywhere available on the web ?

Thank you for the link but it does not solve my problem. In this thread they work with manifest xml files like a playlist. Which i tryed but also doesn´t work. Adobe declairs FMP with easy config and less code for non geeks. And this is exactly what i want for my project.
Does anybody can post some  html sample code especially for dynamic streaming/ MBR wit Flash Media Playback??? For Live or On-Demand.

  • Restoring computer with new hard drive & Logic Board using Time Machine

My MBPro totally crashed and just got it back from Apple with a new hard drive, logic board, optical super drive, one new 1GB ram chip, and a new video display panel. My questions are two fold, first, have I had so much replaced on this machine that I need to use Migration Assistant instead of Time Machine to restore it?
    Second, If I am suppose to be using Time Machine, I'm having no success! My TM backups were done on a network drive via Airport Extreme with a HD attached to it. Through the Snow Leopard disk utility, I can access the partition with the backup on it, but then it hangs on "opening TM backup". After about a half hour, I had to do a hard shut down (no other option). I did this several times, same result. So the question is;
Can I plug the HD directly into my MBPro and restore it that way? I'm not sure if I can do this as I know the backups are different for hard wired and networked drives.
Or can I use an ethernet cable and plug Airport Extreme with the external drive attached into my laptop?
    Thanks for any help!

no. you can do a full system restore from TM using the restore utility on the snow leopard DVD.

snow leopard disk utility?? what exactly are you doing? disk utility is not involved in restoring from TM in any way.

no, this is not how you should do it. connect the AEBS by ethernet. then boot from the snow leopard dvd and use "restore system from backup" from the Utilities menu. it will let you find the backup on the network and do a full system restore from it.
Or can I use an ethernet cable and plug Airport Extreme with the external drive attached into my laptop?

I could not back up with Time Machine, because it did not work and I had over Adobe creative suite 5 design premium student. But I finished my studies last year and I'd like to know how to get the serial number for me to reinstall Adobe creative suite 5 design premium when I am no longer study because I would still like the used? It is not fair if I do anymore because I really need.

  • [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Could not find stored procedure 'dbo.sp_SPNAMEHERE'.

OK, something seemed to have changed with my system because this error is NEW. It might be related to my system upgrade from Vista to Win7, but just guessing here.
I run a database on a corporate MS Sql Server (2005) and an ASP application that connects via ODBC. The real world application works fine, however when I attempt to access Stored Procedures from Dreamweaver (on my development machine)  I am getting the following error:
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Could not find stored procedure 'dbo.sp_SPNAMEHERE'.
This only seems to happen on Stored procedures that RETURN a recordset.
    system:
    Win7
    Dreamweaver CS4
    Code: VBScript/Classic ASP
    SQL Server 2005
    Connecting via ODBC: MM_MY_STRING = "Driver={SQL Server};Server=wscxxxxxxxxx;Database=dbsystem;Uid=username;Pwd=XXXXXXXXXXXX"
Stored procedures that do not return a recordset are not an issue.... this has put my development work at a standstill!!
    Thanks in advance!

Well, I hate bumps, but I am really running out of solutions. I have now tried to use a system DSN on my development machine and that didnt solve the problem. I just un-installed DW and re-installed it and that didnt solve my problem either.
This is very frustrating, because I cannot use any stored procs that return recordsets... I am stuck... can anybody think of a relatively easy work-around to working in DW w/ recordsets that come from SPs when you cant actually access them?
The really weird thing is, when I build the command, and choose the stored proc, and give it valid input variables, and TEST it from the TEST button, everything works and data is returned as expected. Once I click "OK" and actually add it to the ASP page the recordset that should be visible isnt... and when I click the plus sign in the bindings window I get the error...
    Help!!

  • Ableton Live 6 vs Logic Pro 8 CPU usage/audio quality.

    Hi,
Any user's have feedback regarding CPU usage between Abelton Live 6 vs Logic Pro 8. I'm currently running Live 6 on an MBP 2.0ghz (CD) and am constantly running into audio drop outs etc etc.I am reading throughout the net that Logic Pro 8 is more CPU friendly than LIve 6... is this true, overall? Also any users ever do a mixing test between the two apps to see if there was an audio difference when rendering your final project to aiff or wav? I am thinking on using Live 6 as a stratch pad to "create" as I enjoy it's flexibility then transfer the project over to Logic, however that depends if there really is a difference in CPU usage and Audio quality between the two DAW's.
    Thanks.
guess i should also state that i will be running on the new imac's come tax return time. lol

Logic 8 is very CPU friendly, I can say that much. I never found Ableton Live 5 to be very taxing either, though. Pro Tools is.
But like you I use Ableton as a scratchpad, I love how it works, and Logic for the finishing touches. But that's just because I'm not good at Logic yet. Not fast at it.
Get them both! You'll be glad you did.

  • Changing iPod drive letter fixes "could not mount ipod"

So the problem I was having is that although my Windows XP SP2 machine could see my iPod nano as a drive, whenever I tried to use iPod Updater or iTunes, they could not connect/recognize the device. iTunes would simply not see that I had the device, while the updater would freeze for a good 5 - 10 minutes before giving me the "could not mount ipod" error. I tried everything, selective startup, windows update, made sure that I did indeed have USB 2.0 hardware, made sure that when I connected the ipod that Windows Device Manager said it was a "Standard ENHANCED USB Hub," restarted ipodservice, formatted ipod using windows, and probably a few other things. Still, although Windows could see the ipod just fine, apple's software just could not. I could even copy files to and from the device just fine! If only we didn't need iTunes to copy music. :P
Well, one thing I suspected it could be is that with my computer, my primary hard drive (and I only have one) is mysteriously drive letter "D" while when I plugged in my iPod it took on the holy "C" drive letter. Could this be a problem? Possibly, but not likely I thought. So I tried some 3rd party software which emulated the ipod software and I got an error message. First that it appeared my ipod was not formatted (which it was) and second that it "could not create :\ipod_control". First thing I thought was, where is the drive letter? The software isn't even looking for the ipod in C:\, it's looking nowhere! So what I did it changed the ipod's drive letter from C to something else and viola, it worked.
So it seems the iPod may not like it when it is named C, or there was some conflict with the iPod using the C drive letter since, I'll admit, I used to have two hard drives and the other one used to be C. Could also be a bug, who knows.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Ah, the Drive Letter C problem again.
The iPod software and iTunes will not recognize the iPod if it is assigned to drive C. Changing the drive letter to a higher one not used by other drives will solve the problem.

  • K7N2G Live VGA Driver Choice

Live Update 3 says my MSI Live VGA Driver is 4114. Two choices are offered for updating it: MSI Version or nVidia Version. Both have the same version number, 4403, but the two files are 4MB apart.
I'm not even sure where to look to learn the info to figure out which to use.
    Thanks
    Paul
PS For the record: in the thread "Power Supply Requirements", in my last post there I had said that the cpu temp was about 50c. After I updated the BIOS to 1.40, the temp reading is now a steady 34c.

    Go with nVidia drivers.

  • Simulation Interface Toolbox: Problems using sbRIO with Tutorial: "Using the Example Sinewave Model with a VxWorks CompactRIO Target"

    Hello
I faced a problem when I tried to do the Tutorial "Using the Example Sinewave Model with a VxWorks CompactRIO Target".
    My specifications are:
    Software:
    Win7 64-bit
Matlab 2010b with RTW (to compile the *.dll) (32-bit)
GNU-Toolchain 6.3 running in Virtual PC-XP-Mode (to generate the *.out)
Labview 2011 with Simulation Interface Toolbox 2011 (32-bit)
    Hardware:
sbRIO-9631 (from Labview Embedded Platform Evaluation Kit)
I was able to compile a dll and an out file.
I created a custom fpga-Bitfile with the Tutorial "Creating a Custom FPGA Bitfile".
In a blank VI I made the Host-VI and with the SIT Connection Manager I created the Driver VIs.
    Until here everything worked fine.
Now my problem appeared. As long as I don't create Hardware I/O Mappings my model runs fine on the sbRIO:
But when I try to map the in and out port of the model to a HW I/O I get this error:
    What causes this error?
On my sbRIO following software is installed (followed this instruction: Configuring a Real-Time Target to Run the LabVIEW SIT Server)
    Best regards

I have tried and failed to copy my iTunes library and playlists from my Windows 8 desktop to my Windows 7 laptop using an external hard drive. Can it be done? Help would be appreciated. I have followed instructions found online but the library of music doesn't pull in.  Thanks!
    Nate

Migrate an iTunes library from one computer to another
These are two possible approaches that will normally work to move an existing library to a new computer.
    Method 1
Backup the library with this User Tip.
Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer want to access protected content on it.
Restore the backup to your new computer using the same tool used to back it up.
Keep your backup up-to-date in future.
    Method 2
Connect the two computers to the same network. Share your <User's Music> folder from the old computer and copy the entireiTunes library folder into the <User's Music> folder on the new one. Again, deauthorize the old computer if no longer required.
Both methods should give the new computer a working clone of the library that was on the old one, with ratings, play counts, playlists etc. preserved. As far as iTunes is concerned this is still the "home" library for your devices so you shouldn't have any issues with iTunes wanting to erase and reload.
I'd normally recommend method 1 since it establishes an ongoing backup for your library and unlike copying with Windows Explorer the process can be resumed if it is interrupted and it will continue to the next item if there are any read/access errors.
Note if you have iOS devices and haven't moved your contacts and calendar items across then you should create one dummy entry of each in your new profile and iTunes should  merge the existing data from the device.
If your media folder has been split out from the main iTunes folder you may need to do some preparatory work to make it easier to move. See Make a split library portable.
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library or a backup then then seeRecover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device for advice on how to set up your devices with a new library with the maximum preservation of data.

This problem gets solved if you do NOT provide the Java path to the installer.
    e.g.
if you have Java in /usr//bin/java
make sure your PATH does not have /usr/bin....
so basically which java throw error....Then provide the JRE PATH in oraparam.ini for the installer to start ...
    Give it a try...
