Typing favorite characters.

I chose a pointing hand as a favorite character in character viewer. Now how do I type it? I searched on the Keyboard Viewer using all the modifier keys and it is not there.

You won't see it added to Keyboard Viewer. Keyboard Viewer displays the character set established by the current active keyboard layout. Adding a character to Keyboard Viewer's favorites will not alter the keyboard layout (if it did, mass confusion would probably result).
Instead, with the text document open and active and the insertion point placed where you want the character to appear, open Keyboard Viewer and go to the Favorites section. Then double-click the character you want, and it will be entered into your text document at the point the insertion point was left.
As an alternate means, you can drag the character out of the Keyboard Viewer window and drop it onto the Desktop; a text clipping file will be created, containing just that character and also named just that character. Then, when you want to use it in something you are typing, just drag the text clipping into the document's window and let go - that character will be placed where the insertion point is blinking.

  • Typing the characters "oun" launches "Save As" window

    Product: HP ProBook 4530s
    O/S: Windows 7, 2009, SP1, 32 bit
Error message - nope, no error message, just frustrating!
Any changes - nope, still stock
Okay, here's what happens... typing the characters "oun" in any word in any program is kicking me out of what I was doing to some other command window, as if the combination of the letters O U N is acting like some kind of shortcut command.
In MS Word, Excel, or Powerpoint, if I type "oun" in any word, the "Save As" window jumps up in front of me.
In MS Outlook, same thing.  If I type any word with "oun" in it, like "around" "found" etc... it immediately jumps me out of the document, spreadsheet, presentation, or email, and brings up the "Save As" window.
Even in IE, it happens.  Just in trying to type this post, it has already happened every time I have typed these three characters in succession.  This odd window pops up at the bottom third of the IE screen with the main menu options "File Find Disable View Images Cache Tools Validate | Browser Mode: IE9 Compat View   Document Mode: IE7 standards" and a submenu with the options "HTML CSS Console Script Profiler Network"
I never realized how often I type this letter combination.  I find myself actually trying to think ahead and avoiding any word that might have "oun" in it.  This only happens on this HP Probook, and not any of the other machines here with the same release of MS Office.
Any clues as to what is going on, and how I can fix it, make it stop or go away?
    Thanks!

Well, thanks for the suggestion.  I have tried what you suggested.  I used Control Panel to uninstall HP Power Management, then downloaded and installed the version behind your link.  But... it still does it.  I thought is was only happening in MS Office products, where any word with the characters "oun" will bring up the "Save As" window.  But, even, here, in IE, if I type a word like counted or found, up pops a weird window on the bottom third of the screed that shows me HTML or CSS tabs, and let me choose style or document views... I never realized how many words have the characters o u n in succession in them until I hit this wall.  I have also learned that if I type them slow enough, I am not kicked out... I'd REALLY love to know what program is the root of this redirect and just uninstall or remove it.  But it appears that HP Power Management is not the solution, unless by manually uninstall, you could point me to the files I need to manually delete that Control Panel uninstall did not grab.
    With hope...

  • IBook starts typing strange characters

For seemingly no reason my iBook G4 switches over to typing nonsense characters at random times. I'll be midsentence and all of a sudden it types gibberish. Sometimes if I wait a bit it'll go back, but sometimes it lasts hours. Occasionally it switches back and forth, typing some normal letters and some weird characters. This seems to be going along with an issue when I startup of an unusual menu coming up that has a picture of the HD and a Refresh arrow on the left underneath and a right-pointing arrow (--->) on the right.
Obviously not being able to type is a huge problem and I can't seem to find any info on similar problems. Any ideas?

Wow -- this is really weird, and the problem must be relatively common for lots of Tiger users!
The DEFAULT Keyboard shortcuts for BOTH the SPOTLIGHT Window AND to move from one kind of keyboard to another is Command-Option-Space. I had selected three optional keyboards in the INTERNATIONAL LIST because I sometimes type Spanish or Portuguese documents.
Sometimes (who knows when) when I thought I was summoning SPOTLIGHT window, I was shifting to another keyboard configuration.
For the time being, I have disabled the keyboard shortcut (which you can get to from either the Keyboard or the International panes of the System Preferences. But I'm wondering now how to change the key assignment for the OS shortcuts (I know how to do it inside some appllications, of course, but not how to CHANGE OS-level shortcuts.
Anyway, thanks Neil for solving the big problem.

  • Preview typing special characters only

I'm having troubling typing text w/ Preview.
When I try to type, it only types special characters. I'm thinking if I accidently used some shortcut combination to type special characters.
It is not letting me type normal language at all now. Does anyone have any idea?
If there is a way to uninstall preview and reinstall, would anyone let me know? Thanks!!!

Why is everyone going on about the Character Pallette when most of the required symbols are available from the keyboard?
    Using the option key, these are the standard symbols for US and UK keyboards (lower case followed by upper case with the addition of the shift key) Starting with the numeric row;
    ¡€#¢∞§¶•ªº–≠
    ⁄™‹›fifl‡°·‚—±
    œ∑´®†¥¨^øπ“‘
    Œ„‰ÂÊÁËÈØ∏”’
    åß∂ƒ©˙∆˚¬…æ«
    ÅÍÎÏÌÓÔÒÚÆ»
    `Ω≈ç√∫~µ≤≥÷
    ŸÛÙÇ◊ıˆ˜¯˘¿
Enable the Keyboard viewer by checking 'show keyboard and character viewer in the menu bar' in System Preferences > Keyboard > keyboard tab.
Open the keyboard viewer from the flag menu and press the opt key - you'll see all the available symbols and accents. Some of them are highlighted in orange - these can be used with multiple letter combinations.
    For instance, opt+e followed by e = é, opt+e followed by a = á, opt+u followed by o = ö.

  • Some keys are typing alt characters. Help!!

    Hey guys,
My Macbook's keyboard has been acting extremely funky this past week. The primary issue deals with the "h" typing "˙" (it doesn't help now that the key is hanging off one hinge. I accidentally chipped one of hinges in my cleaning attempt) and occasionally some keys on typing their respective alt characters. Also, when I type some keys it mutes my speakers. Looking at the virtual keyboard viewer, I press the left option key and the "h" key appears in grey. But when pressing the right option key it does not.
I've checked under "Language & Text" and "Speech" and everything appears to be fine. I have ran the typical Disk Utility functions and SMC reset to no avail. Also, I can't even run a PRAM reset!! It doesn't help that I am no longer under warranty. If anyone can help please let me know!!!!
FYI I am using a MB403LL/A model running on 10.6.8.

It sounds like a hardware issue -- failing keyboard -- to me.

  • Why the user experience on Bluetooth keyboard of iPad is different on keyboard of MacBook, especially when typing Chinese characters?

I am a Chinese in Taiwan, and I use a input method call "Changjei" (倉頡) to input chinese character. And thank for  "Yahoo Kimo Input Method" found in Macbook Pro, so that I can use this method  as same as typing in Windows PC. When I use bluetooth keyboard connect to iPad mini, it has "Changjei" input method also, but the user experience is different than typing in MacBook Pro! I often type the wrong word when typing in iPad, because some words need additional space key to avoid selection ( when selection appear usually need additional number key for selection ). Usually every chinese character only need one space key for confirm, and in iPad, some Chinese characters need two space key(this will cause problem), and others need one as usual. It slow me down greatly, and is not a smoothly and freely experience when expressing my idea by typing in iPad, and I often distract by these misleading situation when typing.

  • Typing international characters

I have not been able to find any international characters such as umlauts, accents etc. Does any one know if they can be created as they don't seem to be part of the symbol set, or am I missing something?
Also, it would be great if there were a simpler way to add periods (on my blackberry i could simply press the space bar twice).

  • Typing chinese characters on 9iJeveloper JSP

    Hi,
I have a jsp with UTF-8 encoding, and my 9iJdeveloper project complier setting
is marked as UTF-8 as well. But i need to display chinese characters on the jsp.
I can type in the characters but when building project, 9iJdeveloper display java
malformed error. Does Anyone meet this problem before?
    rgds,
    joe

I'm referring the Keyboard dock, not the built-in keyboard on iPad.
You still need to use the Settings to select the Chinese keyboard layout. There is a separate section for hardware keyboards, where you can further choose us, french, german (depending on whether your physical keyboard is qwerty, azerty, or qwertz).
Are you having some problem after doing that? Are you familiar with how normal pinyin input works?

  • Having Trouble Typing International Characters

Hi I have a quick question about making international characters on my mini, I just don't know how to set it up and I may have screwed something up too. First off I found this web link that has what I think to be a good break down of character commands. commandshttp://www.ccsf.edu/Departments/Language_Center/accentsmac.htm
But much to my disappointment not all of them work correctly I'm trying to use Spanish letters, so then I thought i'll go into the international option in the system preferences and activate spanish as one of my languages and that is where I think I went wrong. Truthfully I don't truly understand what this option is all or how to use it correctly. If you can help I would really appreciate it thanks.

Other countries, even English speaking ones, will often have a different keyboard layout. For example, in England they need a pound currency keyboard symbol on the keyboard and replace one of the ones used in the US (I'm not sure which one) with a pound symbol. In other countries the differences are greater and where you type the letter Z on a keyboard may instead produce a letter Y. International lets you select these other keyboards which could potentially remap your whole keyboard including providing easier access to accented characters commonly used in other languages, but at the cost of losing some of your usual keyboard characters or having to learn new positions for those.
The other way to use characters is to keep your normal keyboard but use special key combinations as you found in that other website. For example, to produce a o-umlaut (o with two dots over it, ö) you type option+u and then the letter o. Obviously if you are writing a whole book in German this can be tiresome, but if you are just doing it for the purposes of posting in Apple Discussions as I just did it is easier than having to learn the German keyboard.

  • CAPTCHA - Typing cursive characters

    Hi,
I find it almost impossible to to type the cursive characters shown in a box ( wikipedia CAPTCHA) , typically at the end of a registration, as the first letter automatically change to upper case. Please can you suggesta solution or fix this bug in BB10. Otherwise you will have a lot of unhappy users who are unable to use registeration forms on BB10 devices.
    Please help.

Backspace and then type again and it should be lower case. If that does not work, type it twice and then drop cursor in and  backspace the capital one out. Happens in many places, not just captcha.
