Udev and mount usb
Hi gues
I''m new in arche and generalny in linux .
Lately I wanted to automount my MP3 player when i plug in him.
Let's move to the point .
Firstly i writen script to mount
#!/bin/bash
sleep 10
echo "pawel" >> /home/lenovo/pawel.txt
/bin/mount -o ro /dev/sony_walkman /mnt/sony_walkman
exit
Next
My udev rule
SUBSYSTEM=="block", ATTRS{ventor}=="SONY", SYMLINK+="sony_walkman:, RUN+="/bin/sh -c 'sudo /home/lenovo/.scripts/mount_sony_walkman.sh'"
When i plug the mp3 player the script i called because the file pawel.txt is changed .
By disk is not mount
When i invoke the script in console than the disk is mounting.
I use a slightly better method these days, which is:
In /etc/udev/rules.d/10-local.rules
ACTION=="add", KERNEL=="sd*1", ATTRS{serial}=="BIGLONGLISTOFHEXCHARS", SYMLINK+="mydrive%n", RUN+="/root/bin/mntmydrive"
And that file contains, essentially:
if ! mountpoint -q /media/mydrive ; then
mount /media/mydrive
fi
And there's an appropriate entry in /etc/fstab, e.g.:
/dev/mydrive1 /media/mydrive vfat noauto,noatime,users,flush,gid=100,umask=007
If it doesn't work for you, do some debugging.
Remember to run this, after changing udev rules:
udevadm control --reload

Filesystem Error (UDev and mounting)
I'm having trouble with my filesystem(s) on startup. These problems began after I cleaned my case using compressed air / vacuum, though I don't think I jostled any hardware. My original filesystem was set up like this:
/dev/sda1 NTFS WinXP partition
/dev/sda2 XFS /var
/dev/sda3 EXT3 root
/dev/sda4 extended
/dev/sda5 EXT3 /home
/dev/sda6 swap
/dev/sdb1 XFS /digitalmedia
On startup, UDev starts and Modules are loaded, then I make it to:
:: Checking Filesystems [BUSY]
/dev/sda3: clean, 87750/977280 files, 668803/3905803 blocks
/dev/sda5 is mounted. e2fsck: Cannot continue, aborting.
/sbin/fsck.xfs: XFS file system. [FAIL]

If I log in as root, /proc/mounts contains this:
rootfs / rootfs rw 0 0
proc /proc prox rw,relatime 0 0
sys /sys sysfs rw,relatime 0 0
udev /dev devtmpfs rw,nosuid,relatime,size=10240k,nr_inodes=256615,mode=755 0 0

/dev/sda2 /media/usbhd-sda2 xfs rw,relatime,attr2,noquota 0 0
As you can see, 4 partitions are mounted under /media/* instead of their appropriate locations. At this point, I rebooted to SystemRescue LiveCD and issued e2fsck -f commands for the (unmounted) EXT3 partitions:
root@sysresccd /proc % e2fsck -f /dev/sda3

At this point, I'm not exactly sure where the problem is. I suspect that the filesystems themselves are ok (based on the liveCD tests), so perhaps the problem is the filesystems are inappropriately mounted under /media/* when they are not supposed to (ie before fsck during startup). Also, UDev (which I assume does this mounting) thinks these partitions are USB HD type directories instead of internal SATA partitions. Finally, the errors in dmesg referring to the flexcop module might be a red herring? Please help - I'm not sure what next step to take.Thanks for your reply. I did not disconnect any SATA leads. I mainly cleaned the CPU heatsink and fan.
I am able to boot through UDev and get to filesystems checks without the LiveCD. More specifically, on boot without the live CD, both drives are recognized by the bios and Grub 1.5 is loaded, presenting options to boot into Arch Linux, Arch Linux Fallback, or Windows. If I select Arch Linux, boot messages scroll by, then I see:

(or type Control-D to continue):
At this prompt, if I press Control-D, the system reboots. If I log in using the root password, I see a root prompt. At this point, /proc/mounts already has partitions in it under /media (again this is without any LiveCD). Each directories' contents under media seem normal.
Interestingly, as I posted above, mount reports that both /dev/disk/by-uuid/dc4661 and /dev/sda3 are mounted (to / and /media/usbhd-sda3, respectively), although this is actually the same partition.
I should mention I have also run the bootable disk utilities provided by Seagate and WD for each drive and have run their diagnostic studies, which were unrevealing (each ran for ~1.5 hours).
After seeing the sda1 error messages in dmesg, I booted to WinXP from GRUB. CHKDSK ran and the system booted normally. I ran CHKDSK again from within WinXP as well which revealed no errors. Then, booting into Arch produces a few new errors in dmesg (which are probably irrelevant to the main problem):
NTFS volume version 3.1.
NTFS-fs warning (device sda1): load_system_files(): Unsupported volume flags 0x4000 encountered.
NTFS error (device sda1): load_system_files(): Volume has unsupported flags set. Mounting read-only. Run chkdsk and mount in Windows.
I don't know if the problem is at the BIOS/hw, partition table, GRUB, UDev, etc. -
Sunray Server and DTUs USB Support
I'm looking for help on usb support through the Sunray DTUs. I would like to be able to connect a usb device as I would with inside of Windows from a Sunray. USB drives are about the only thing I have working but not consistently. I've used the USB drive daemon posted on the Thinkthin blog and that works most of the time. I would like to use printers connected directly to the DTU. I have an idea on how to add the printer using the tmp/SUWut/units/<macaddress>/dev path but it seems that I cannot get it to work; maybe I'm using the wrong settings/drivers. I would also like to use USB cdroms, floppys, etc. Basically anything that doesn't require a special driver in Windows I would like to use on a DTU. It makes it hard to convince people that these can replace desktops when the functionality of things like USB are nowhere nearly as developed as Windows desktops. BTW, I need it both on the Solaris side and through the Sunray Windows connector. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I am not sure about sunray connector (windows) but within solaris it is rather transparent as long as the usb drive device is not NTFS. Plug it in and it should show up in /tmp/SUNWut/mnt/user/. I use a dvdwriter (lightscribe) the same way.
Whenever I have problems with users not being able to mount thumb drives it is always a NTFS issue or a high density thumb drive (8-16gb).
Not sure why sun doesn't put something more apparent on the desktop when you mount a drive. The rest of the world does that and it would make it a bit more user friendly. If you want a pain in the rear try using virtualbox through a sunray and mount usb devices. It works but it is really convoluted.
Never bothered with printers. -
Mounting USB harddrives via UDEV with uuid?
I started using arch with Gnome as primary system, there was this 'built in' automount via uid.
now that i've changed to openbox, which program is the most prefered for openbox?
Could it be that having udev and some other mount-programs on my local installation causes problems?
And: Wasn't there something like almost all major distris started to use udev? Is this the better way to go when automounting?

Mounting USB Hard Drives and Hard Locking
So, it's been a long time since I've posted here which I have to say, is because Arch was running beautifully for a long time. Sadly though, my laptop was stolen and I was forced to buy a new one. With the new one, I've gotten everything mostly back up and running but I'm having an issue. Obviously the one in the subject line.
A few things to note about this install and after testing before posting.
1. Brand new install
2. All packages are current EXCEPT 3. I currently have nvidia-256.53-1-x86_64, nvidia-utils with the same version, and kernel26-2.6.35.5-1. These are due to a black screen I was getting on starting my xserver.
3. HAL is running
4. Optical disks mount and umount cleanly.
5. NTFS-3G is installed and working.
6. My Windows 7 install on the same internal hard drive can be accessed and mounted without a hard lock.
My problem is this. Whenever I try and connect an external hard drive via USB, it takes a few seconds and then the whole machine hard locks with what looks like a kernel panic(can't do anything and I have blinking lights...ie capslock, etc). This computer seems to have USB 3.0 which I noticed from Win7 awhile back if that makes a difference. (05:00.0 USB Controller: NEC Corporation Device 0194 (rev 03) )
Last time I try to mount my WD Passport, I ran dmesg right after I plugged it in before I got my hard lock. The only thing I noticed were the entries at the bottom of things like this...
xhci_hcd 0000:05:00.0: WARN: Stalled endpoint
I have no idea whether that has anything to do with it or not. I'd be more than happy to post config files if needed. I've tried googling, the wiki, and the forums and I'm stumped. I actually plugged my drive in one time and got it to mount and opened some folders. Afterward, it hard locked.

Buying OSX App store on my imac and mounting it on a USB for my old MBP legal?
I want to buy OSX mountain lion in the App store on my imac and mount it on a USB to update my old MBP (running leopard so I can't use the app store.)
If I am using the same apple id for both computers is this legal or will the app store think I am putting it on extra computers, and shut me down or something?Just to be clear the OSX mountain lion installer will not open even from a clean install, because the laptop is running 10.5.8
(My imac is running the latest mountain lion and the app store is already installed, I am not installing the appstore as the subject of this thread is a little confusing i realise now.) -
Udev and SCSI partitions not mounted
I have just attempted to convert devfs to udev on my dual AMD Opteron with two SCSI drives running fully up-to-date Arch Linux. The result of following the standard udev procedure (which has worked on three other IDE machines without a hitch) was that of the four mountable SCSI disk partititions, only swap and / were mounted properly
/dev/discs/disc0/part1 / reiserfs defaults 0 0
dev/discs/disc0/part2 swap swap defaults 0 0
while the /home and /data partitions were not recognized and mounted:
/dev/discs/disc0/part3 /home reiserfs defaults 0 0
/dev/discs/disc1/part1 /data reiserfs defaults 0 0
I was able to revert the machine back to its original devfs so the machine does work properly in its original configuration.
I noticed a bash script in the /etc/udev directory that seemed to be used to identify the SCSI devices present. Is it possible that this is not working correctly? Does anyone have any idea of how the SCSI configuration could have gone awry?
Thanks.
Some details about the machine:
arch version: Arch Linux 0.7 (Wombat)
kernel version: 2.6.7
two processors: AMD Athlon(tm) MP 2600+
two SCSI_storage_controllers: Adaptec AIC-7899P U160/m (rev 1).Once again, I installed archlinux on an scsi machine, and have been cought in the boot-scsi-device-fails-udev-trap. This time, I had a bit of time. Instead of editing the fstab entries, I decided to find out why ide devices are handled well, and scsi devices are not.
Have a look at udev.rules. You will find an entry for ide block deviced there, that creates devfs symlinks:
# ide block devices
BUS="ide", KERNEL="hd*", PROGRAM="/etc/udev/ide-devfs.sh %k %b %n", NAME="%k", SYMLINK="%c{1} %c{2}"
You will notice also there are no similar entries for scsi block devices. Therefore, their nodes will not fit devfs scheme. Now, let's have a look at /etc/udev/. You will find scsi-devfs.sh there. This script will create devfs-like nodes for scsi blocks. Now the problem is clear, isn't it. Add the following lines to udev.rules:
# scsi block devices
BUS="scsi", KERNEL="sd*", PROGRAM="/etc/udev/scsi-devfs.sh sd %b %n", NAME="%c{1}", SYMLINK="%c{2} %k %c{3} %c{4}"
BUS="scsi", KERNEL="sr*", PROGRAM="/etc/udev/scsi-devfs.sh sr %b %n", NAME="%c{1}", SYMLINK="%c{2} %k %c{3} %c{4}"
BUS="scsi", KERNEL="st*", PROGRAM="/etc/udev/scsi-devfs.sh st %b %n", NAME="%c{1}", SYMLINK="%c{2} %k %c{3} %c{4}"
BUS="scsi", KERNEL="sg*", PROGRAM="/etc/udev/scsi-devfs.sh sg %b %n", NAME="%c{1}", SYMLINK="%c{2} %k %c{3} %c{4}"
Now the devfs naming scheme should be used for scsi devices, too. Surprisingly, it isn't. Any hints are welcome. -
[SOLVED] How to automatically mount USB drives with custom mount point
edit:
Original title was : 'Unable to mount USB disk via /etc/rc.local', but got changed since the /etc/rc.local problem isn't relevant for me anymore.
Hello,
Since I am new to this forum, I'll start off with this :
Thanks to archlinux, its founder and all its contributors, cause this is the operating system (flavour) that annoys me the least.
The root problem :
I want to automount USB storage devices to other places than /media/ and without the need for programs that depend on gnome and the like. As I tried some stuff with hald and such, I didn't really get to a nice and easy to configure solution. Any hints in that direction are always welcome.
For now, automount of known USB storages devices during boot, will do.
So the things I tried and didnt work :
1.
Provide the disk info to /etc/fstab (via the disks UUID and 'auto' filesystem)
Add 'mount /mountpoint' to /etc/rc.local
Result : the mount command in rc.local says '... specify filesystem'
However, after boot, running /etc/rc.local mounts the USB disks correctly.
2.
Provide the disk info to /etc/fstab (via the disks UUID and the correct filesystem)
Add 'mount /mountpoint' to /etc/rc.local
Result : pc doesn't get through boot process and gives me the 'ctrl-d to reboot or root passwd for maintenance'
3.
Provide no disk info in /etc/fstab
Add the full mount line to /etc/rc.local (mount -t fs /dev/disks/by-uuid/MyUUID /MyMountpoint )
Result : don't remember the output of the mount execution, but well, it didn't mount
However, after boot, running /etc/rc.local mounts the USB disks correctly.
Is there something that isn't loaded at the time of rc.local execution that I need for mounting of USB devices ? Or why else is this failing ?
Regards,
BasiK
Last edited by BasiK (2009-08-28 07:22:50)Thanks for the hint hunterthomson, but the pc I will be using it on, is an own-built HTPC/home file server, so there is no way I want to use a graphical file manager to get the usb disks mounted.
I tried to figure out a little about udev rules, and I got to do what I wanted to do, so thx for pointing me in that direction Mr.Elendig.
Btw, I am indeed also using auto-sleep/park disks, but this udev way works perfectly.
I added two rules files to /etc/udev/rules.d/ :
The first for a known usb disk (with its volume uuid), with a named mountpoint under my media dir /symbiosis/ :
[basik@plox ~]$ cat /etc/udev/rules.d/80-usb-utopia.rules
ACTION=="add", KERNEL=="sd[b-z][0-9]", ENV{ID_FS_UUID}=="a59332c2-07ba-4c52-afb5-20e361bdf71a",SYMLINK+="usb-%n", GROUP="storage", NAME="%k"
ACTION=="add", KERNEL=="sd[b-z][0-9]", ENV{ID_FS_UUID}=="a59332c2-07ba-4c52-afb5-20e361bdf71a",RUN+="/bin/mkdir -p /symbiosis/utopia"
ACTION=="add", KERNEL=="sd[b-z][0-9]", ENV{ID_FS_UUID}=="a59332c2-07ba-4c52-afb5-20e361bdf71a", RUN+="/bin/mount -t auto -o rw,noauto,sync,dirsync,noexec,nodev,noatime /dev/%k /symbiosis/utopia", OPTIONS="last_rule"
ACTION=="remove", KERNEL=="sd[b-z][0-9]", ENV{ID_FS_UUID}=="a59332c2-07ba-4c52-afb5-20e361bdf71a", RUN+="/bin/umount -l /symbiosis/utopia", OPTIONS="last_rule"
The second for unknown usb disks, to mount under the same dir. This is simply taken from the archwiki http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ude … .26_Tricks
Make sure these rules are executed after the ones for specific usb disks.
[basik@plox ~]$ cat /etc/udev/rules.d/usb-disks.rules
KERNEL=="sd[a-z]", NAME="%k", SYMLINK+="usb%m", GROUP="storage", OPTIONS="last_rule"
ACTION=="add", KERNEL=="sd[a-z][0-9]", SYMLINK+="usb%n", GROUP="storage", NAME="%k"
ACTION=="add", KERNEL=="sd[a-z][0-9]", RUN+="/bin/mkdir -p /symbiosis/usb%n"
ACTION=="add", KERNEL=="sd[a-z][0-9]", RUN+="/bin/mount -t auto -o rw,noauto,sync,dirsync,noexec,nodev,noatime /dev/%k /symbiosis/usb%n", OPTIONS="last_rule"
ACTION=="remove", KERNEL=="sd[a-z][0-9]", RUN+="/bin/umount -l /symbiosis/usb%n"
ACTION=="remove", KERNEL=="sd[a-z][0-9]", RUN+="/bin/rmdir /symbiosis/usb%n", OPTIONS="last_rule"
These may not be the nicest looking udev rules, but it works for what I wanted to do with it. -
Mounting USB devices in arch guest
I'm new to virtualbox, but not to linux. I have been using arch for at least 3 years, so I have some familiarity with it. I have recently installed arch as a guest OS on virtualbox (on OSX host). I am having some trouble accessing an attached USB device from the arch guest. I have defined the virtualbox USB filter for my device, and it appears to work, detecting the identified device and attaching it to the guest (at least as far as virtualbox is concerned). I can see the device in the virtualbox pull-down menu, and it shows with a "checkmark" next to it, showing (I think) that it has been attached to my arch guest.
Problem is, I cannot see the device from the arch guest. no entry in /dev for any USB device. symptoms are the same whether i insert ther USB device before or after starting the arch guest. I have HAL and dbus active in my guest. Also, I have made this work in arch installed natively. since there is no /dev entry, this might appear to be some form of udev issue? is there a specific udev setup that I should be aware of for arch as a guest?
Please help if you can. I will appreciate all comments and suggestions.
-dvhhey, ive got Arch setup in virtualbox as well, and can mount usb's and cd's etc. (although with some issues i may need to bring up in another thread...) anyways, im assuming you have the PUEL virtualbox and not the OSE one?
also, your certain that you've mounted the correct USB (on the Virtual Box pull-down menu)? because you may have mounted a USB which was already attached to your host, and not the actual USB?
just checking, i dont know much about how to fix this issue so im just going at the simple solutions... -
Pcmanfm is "Not Authorized" to mount usb drives
Hi,
I recently installed arch linux it's a nice distro but I got a few problem with it.
The biggest one is that I am actually not able to mount usb drives with pcmanfm this means that I am not able to use my old debian /home so far.
I tired multiple thinks (some of them are still active) e.g for example I used to setup a udev rules which wasn't helpful at all (and even after deleting this rule I always see server empty folder in /media (but that's another problem)).
Any ideas why I am not able to mount encrypted and not encrypted USB drives in arch linux?

AutoMounting / Udev and HAL
Hey fellow Archers,
Sorry if this is a bit of a Noob Question.
But I am having issues with automounting usb drives that etc.
I am running eeepc 1000 and everything works fine out of the box. But I have shown Arch to a friend of mine and we can't gain access to the usb drive with free.desktop permission error. I have read the wiki and forum posts. However I have found the are for much older versions of HAL and Udev, and they are contradictory.
Please if you could help me clarfiy a solutions. Should Udev handle to mounting and permission rule or should I add HAL policy ?.
If HAL if the best solution could be so kind as to provide a example of Hal policy as my previous attempt to edited HAL has failed.
Kind Regards

Dockingstation with udev and systemd
Hello,
first: sorry for my bad english... the last time i have practise my english was in school :-)
now my problem:
i try to setup a udev-rule for my thinkpad T61 when the latptop is (un)docked from the station.
i try a lot of thinks... RUN+=" and such stuff -- but my script takes very long time (Setup Interface, WakeOnLAN, multiple cryptet mounts from my homeserver etc.) and killed by systemd after a while.
related to this (jasonwryan.com -- Scripting with udev) and this (bbs.archlinux.org -- Automating a script for a usb device on systemd?) i create a udev-rule like this:
/etc/udev/rules.d/10-thinkpad-dock.rules:

IPod touch recognized and mounted as digital camera
I've connected my ipod tonight and for my surprise it was recognized by windows (7 RC1) as a digital camera and mounted as an external storage device. It shows 4.2GB of total space in DCF file system (?), wich is the amount shown in itunes as free space, what's goin on? is it indeed to happen? O_o
2.2.1 firmware and itunes 8.1hello simonhwsn,
this seems to be dependant to the OS due the same os is used on iPhones which has the camera function.
I have a iPod Touch 2G and updated to OS 3.0.
Due this seems to be a feature and not a bug,
I use this function to use my iPod as built-in USB-Stick
to carry additional files always with me.
Kind regards

Mac mini with Mountain lion fails to load and mount the os-10.6.3 install disk
I'm trying to use the hardware test utility that should be on the applications disk. When I put in either the install or application disk the drive kicks it out again after 15 or 20 seconds. These disks will both load on my imac (late 2009) but of course won't install anything.
Is this normal behavour or do I have a hardware problem?
In addition I boot from my Mountain lion usb recovery drive but find nothing about the hardware testing utility local or online.
I wanted to test memory. Used memtest and shows no errors. I also want to test everything else too.Thanks much folks for the replies and ideas.
Here is more info that should have been in my first post.
The mini is late 2009.
It ejects the install os 10.6.3 original disks without mounting them BUT will load and mount any other dvd or cd that I have tried video, music or data. When either of the Apple disks are inserted the drive does a low pitch vibration for several seconds then stops. It repeats about five times then ejects. No other disks vibrate this way. The apple disks for the mini do not vibrate or eject in the iMac. They load and mount normally.
I looked for an update for the EFIboot and couldnt see anything that I thought mached the mini.
I have tried the NVPRAM reset with no change in behavour.
Doing a startup with d key doesn't find the AHT. I assume if it is on the mac-HD it would be found and run.
There doesnt seem to be one on the recovery USB drive that I created.
I did upgrade from SL to ML, no erase.
BDAqua, I'm not sure what you mean, "In fact, do 3 in a row, takes a bit of time." Should I do 3 NVRAM resets in a row?
I haven't tried the cleaning kit since all other disks give no problems or errors that I know of. -
[solved]udev boot error - usb keyboard wont work in recovery shell
i just hooked up an external drive for the first time to this system, i didnt do anything to it yet, except i went to run gdisk and realized it wasnt installed yet. So i ran
pacman -Syu gdisk
from an SSh terminal, then when it was updating a package, cant exactly remember which one but i hitnk it was either kernel or udev, the ssh termilal appeared to disconnect becuause it lost its output.
then i opened another terminal sshed in, and was able to run pacman -Syu again, which means the first update did finish, or the lockfile wouldnt have let me update a 2nd time i would think. (note, the newly external hard drive was connected during all these events). Something wierd happened here.It had files that needed updating, which i thought that would be rare since i just updated, unless it simply didnt finish, and the lockfile wasnt in place or something, then it finished updating successfully, and i was still remoted into a working SSH command line (i.e. didnt get kicked out this time).
Now is where the fun begins. i typed 'reboot', and the system appeared to reboot, but i wasnt able to shell in this time. i connected the monitor to the system almost a minute later, and realized it was still shutting down, then when it rebooted i get an error message.

NOW THE KEYBOARD DOESNT WORK, it only works in bios. It stops functioning (the numlock light) as soon as udev starts to initiate, which leaves me with no way to try to reupdate udev and the kernel again to see if i can fix it.
all i could think of was to disconnect the external drive, that didnt help. then i tried checking the USB settings in bios for any legacy options, it doesnt have them (Dell Optiplex), so i just made sure the USB boot was off and all ports enabled.
Now im totally stuck short of a recovery disk.
any suggestions how i can just get the keyboard working and chroot into arch and update some package to fix it without having to jump through hoops to make a recovery disk while here at work with limited resources?
Last edited by wolfdogg (2014-01-22 22:53:02)ok i found what happened, so far.
looking in /var/log/pacman.log i see a gap in the installs, a 2 minute gap, which is the time i rebooted and reran the install.
at 9:25.. i was running an upgrade, and the last one in the minute of 9:25 is
9:25[PACMAN] upgraded linux-firmware (20131013.7d0c7a8-1 -> 20131230.52d77db-1)
this is where the shell got disconnected therefore i wasnt able to see what happened after this.
the the log continues at 9:27 minute, has to be when i rebooted and shelled back in and reran the upgrade, the log starts with
9:27[PACMAN] upgraded linux (3.12.6-1 -> 3.12.8-1)
so it appears that the shell got disconnected as it was upgrading linux-firmware (20131013.7d0c7a8-1 -> 20131230.52d77db-1) .
This begs the questions; Did the SSH shell get disconnected simply because the system was using those resources at the time? i assume this. the next question is, was it wrong to be upgrading via remote SSH shell then? Or whats likely that happened here?
