Udev still recommended?

Hello guys,
what's the right way to have access to removable devices such as usb devices since udev seems not to work in the way I was used to as it is written in the wiki down here?
I'm using dwm with simply coreutils in xterm and for some cases vifm as a term-based filemanager. So there's no way to do it with hal and a gui-based filemanager.
So my question, is udev still the right thing to handle this task or are there any other perhaps better solutions?
Best regards.

I guess the warning in the wiki is due to mkinitcpio 0.6 which will remove all the klibc-* stuff. Basically, you have to replace /.../vol_id with /sbin/blkid.
For example, my updated udev file (mount to /media, use label if available, luks support) looks like this now:
KERNEL!="sd[a-z]*", GOTO="media_by_label_auto_mount_end"
ACTION=="add", PROGRAM!="/sbin/blkid %N", GOTO="media_by_label_auto_mount_end"
# Open luks partition if necessary
PROGRAM=="/sbin/blkid -o value -s TYPE %N", RESULT=="crypto_LUKS", ENV{crypto}="mapper/", ENV{device}="/dev/mapper/%k"
ENV{crypto}!="?*", ENV{device}="%N"
ACTION=="add", ENV{crypto}=="?*", PROGRAM=="/usr/bin/xterm -display :0.0 -e 'echo Password for /dev/%k; /usr/sbin/cryptsetup luksOpen %N %k'"
ACTION=="add", ENV{crypto}=="?*", TEST!="/dev/mapper/%k", GOTO="media_by_label_auto_mount_end"
# Global mount options
ACTION=="add", ENV{mount_options}="noatime,users"
# Filesystem specific options
ACTION=="add", PROGRAM=="/sbin/blkid -o value -s TYPE %E{device}", RESULT=="vfat|ntfs", ENV{mount_options}="%E{mount_options},utf8,gid=100,umask=002"
# Get label
ACTION=="add", PROGRAM=="/sbin/blkid -o value -s LABEL %E{device}", ENV{dir_name}="%c"
# use basename to correctly handle labels such as ../mnt/foo
ACTION=="add", PROGRAM=="/usr/bin/basename '%E{dir_name}'", ENV{dir_name}="%c"
ACTION=="add", ENV{dir_name}!="?*", ENV{dir_name}="usbhd-%k"
ACTION=="add", ENV{dir_name}=="?*", RUN+="/bin/mkdir -p '/media/%E{dir_name}'", RUN+="/bin/mount -o %E{mount_options} /dev/%E{crypto}%k '/media/%E{dir_name}'"
ACTION=="remove", ENV{dir_name}=="?*", RUN+="/bin/umount -l '/media/%E{dir_name}'", RUN+="/bin/rmdir '/media/%E{dir_name}'"
ACTION=="remove", ENV{crypto}=="?*", RUN+="/usr/sbin/cryptsetup luksClose %k"
LABEL="media_by_label_auto_mount_end"
However, I'm not sure if I should use blkid's cache or not (-p flag)...
edit:
Changelog
20100303
removed blkid's -p flag as it makes blkid always return the return code 0 even if there is no filesystem on that specifiy device / partition.

  • Is it still recommended to do a restart after and update?

    Hello.  Just did an Apple update to my iMac.  Is it recommended to to a restart after the update has downloaded?  By the sounds of the prompt afterwards "The update was done successfully" or something like that, sounds like it is not.  Thanks for any input on this.  Cheers.

    Some updates require a restart while others allow you to continue to use the computer while the update is in progress.  The "Update" window will tell you whether or not you have to restart and it will restart when the update is completed.  Just follow the instructions.

  • Safe boot from raid1 system disk? Still recommended for updating OS?

    Is it possible?
    If it is how?
    My MP just reboots or hangs.
    Is safe boot still better way to update OS in .5?
    GUI is disabled anyway in "normal" update procedure and maybe same services than with Safe Boot?

  • I have an iPod  that when I try to update the Apps that are shown to need update-ding and when I indicated to have them updated I get a message "can not connect to App store". The ipod has been updateing until recently. I came still down load new App  and

    I submitted my question but ran out of room in the box. I can still down load new Apps to my iPod touch AND update them but CAN NOT update the older Apps. that was on the iPod before the problem.
    I have been to Three Apple Service Center stores - In Tulsa OK, Oklahoma City OK, Tacoma WA and NO ONE could tell me what is the problem OR what to do to correct it.  The Tech then tells me to get hold of the main Apple Service Center number. I tell them I already have and they still recommend going to them.
    I have erased all information and started over as a new iPod Touch but the problem persists.
    I have called the Apple Service number and they tell me to do everything that the the Tech's at the Apple Service center stores tried to do but DID NOT work.
    After I spend a lot of time on the phone, I get told to make an appointment at a Apple Service center store so they can physically have hands on assistance. Come on folks I have already done that and they were of no help. When I say that, I get told that may be the only way I can get the problem resolved.
    Surely there is someone out there that knows something about what is happening OR not happening with my iPod and provide a solution.
    Thank You for your concideration

  • Optical Out... Still Supported?

    I used to use optical out on my MacBook all the time. I'm one of those people who still pulls out his MD player from time to time and I'm thinking of getting another MD deck. Anywaayyy...
    I haven't used the optical out for some time and now when I hook everything up there is no sound. I know I'm doing it right, done it a thousand times. Checked my cables etc. with a different system, all good. MacBook seems fine, the light's there, switching from analog to digital is working fine, everything is as it should be under Audio/MIDI. Just no sound.
    It was probably OS Leopard when I last used it. Is there no driver in Yosemite?
    Someone told me the newer MacBooks and MacBook Pros don't have optical in/out any more (shame) so maybe Apple just dropped support for it.
    My MacBook Pro is a mid 2009.
    My vintage Yamaha CA-610 II anxiously awaits a signal.
    Thanks for any feedback/info.

  • Optical out fail, but still shining?

    Hi,
    I have previously used my optical out fine. Recently I have tried using it to no luck. There is light shining through my optical cable. The mac automatically sets the output to optical. But no luck with my devices. (Surround sound a DAC) Anybody know anything I can try? Can this be a hardware issue if its still emmiting light and registering it automatically?
    Thanks

  • ABAP Queries - Recommended or not?

    Hello,
    Are ABAP queries still recommended by SAP on ECC 6.0 release? Some suggetions in our project is that ABAP queries should not be used anymore and must be deleted from the system, as they are not recommended by SAP anymore. Therefore the doubt. I could not find any SAP documentation stating this. Could someone clarify?
    Also, how can we identify if a particular query that is existing in the system is in use or not?
    Thanks and Regards,

  • Ejb-link is still required when using local references?

    Hi!
    In BEA's link (http://e-docs.bea.com/wls/docs81/ejb/DDreference-ejb-jar.html#1114738) there is the following comment for weblogic-ejb-jar.xml element 'jndi-name':
    "Assigning a JNDI name to a bean is not recommended. Global JNDI names generate heavy multicast traffic during clustered server startup. See Using EJB Links for the better practice."
    Since we're using local references (local-jndi-name) to access our ejbs instead of remote references, is this still recommendation still pertinent?
    Thanks
    Christianne

    It is enough if you add the ejb-ref & ejb-link in the session bean. The
    session will look up relative to java:comp/env
    The following doc shows an example of accessing an ejb from a web app using
    ejb-link.
    http://e-docs.bea.com/wls/docs81/webapp/components.html#146848
    --Sathish
    <Christianne Carvalho> wrote in message news:[email protected]..
    I'm not getting very well how the ejb-link is used. In my case I have
    entity beans that are referenced in session beans.
    In my entity beans I have the following XDoclet tag.
    * @ejb.bean
    * name="ProductDescription"
    * display-name="ProductDescription"
    * jndi-name="ejb/ProductDescription"
    * local-jndi-name="ejb/ProductDescriptionLocal"
    * view-type="local"
    * type="CMP"
    In my session bean I'm currently getting the reference for the entity bean
    using the following code:
    productDescriptionLocalHome=(ProductDescriptionLocalHome)
    lookupLocalHome(ProductDescriptionLocalHome.JNDI_NAME);
    If I add the following XDoclet tag to my session bean, in ejb-jar.xml a
    <ejb-link> is created inside <ejb-local_ref> tag.
    * @ejb.ejb-ref ejb-name="ProductDescription" view-type="local"
    Considering the info above:
    1) In the entity bean, is there any extra tag to define the ejb-link or is
    the ejb-link only defined in the session bean?
    2) Re session bean, only adding the @ejb-ref xdoclet tag is enough for
    using the ejb-link or do I also have to change my lookup? If I do, what do
    I have to search for in the lookup?
    Thanks!

  • Does fans in macbook pro 13 schoudl still run 2000 rpm?

    Hi i have problem with my macbook pro 13' when it gets high temperature around 95 c fans are still runing at 2000 rpm schoudl they do that or rise

    You don't want to use a fan control app because they override the sensors in your MBP.
    At 90ºC, I would think that the fans should be running at a far greater speed than 2000rpms. Mine can rev up to around 3000-4000rpms when the machine is really being overtaxed.
    I would still recommend taking your machine into an Apple Store or an AASP and having it checked out. If your fans aren't working correctly you could be headed for a thermal shutdown.

  • Reset Genius recommendations and likings.

    Hello,
    I currently have set up Genius on my iTunes account again, only it is still recommending songs for things I liked in the past. I like to have a fresh start at times, so is it possible to reset the recommendations of Genius on your account (and likings and dislikings) to the way how it was when you just have set up your iTunes account?
    Excluding purchases and the songs you really have in your library, of course.
    Thanks in advance.

    As much as I'd love to also start fresh with my recommendations, nothing I've tried has worked. The only way I could imagine it would be possible would be if iTunes updated the Genius Recommendations feature, or if somehow it could ignore your purchase history, something that Genius bases most emphasis on in its recommendations.
    If you would like to get some really great recommendations that you can control 1000% more easily, I would suggest using outside services like last.fm (for free). Last.fm allows you to keep track of music you play on iTunes and on your iPod/ MP3 device, and recommends based on that. You can also delete artists you no longer like from your online account so that they don't interfee with your recommendations. (Sorry for advertising, but it's true!) Hopefully in the future, iTunes' Genius feature will be a little more flexible and user-friendly, so we won't have to rely on outside sources to recommend new music to us. Until then, I see no other solutions.

  • Genius recommendations format changed

    I have noticed that the Genius recommendations in the store have changed. It used to give me track by track recommendations with Albums listed above. Now all I see are album recommendations. Genius still recommends tracks from my music library, but this does not give the range of recommendations that it used to.
    Is this an option change, since the changeover occurred whilst I was browsing the store one day? I had my normal list of recommended tracks at the bottom of the page with some albums at the top and suddenly the list disappeared and all I can now see is a page of albums which require me to go to the album and try a track. This is inconvenient and the range of recommendations is greatly reduced.
    I found the random mix of tracks a great way to get to know new music and the disappearance of this is a substantial loss to me and reduces the pleasure of the browsing experience greatly.
    Am I missing something or have I lost this facility completely.....?

    I don't even see recommendations anymore as of a few days ago. It used to be in the music store page about 2/3's down on the page listed by album on the left and tracks on the right. Now there's nothing.
    I'm simply confirming this fact. What's going on??

  • Recommended method to deploy apps in the enterprise

    I have a Mac server configured with Profile Manager. My users at this point log into their iMacs with their Active Directory credentials. Classroom laptops use AD credentials as well, and the rest of the laptops (1/3 of all Macs on our site) have stand-alone accounts on the local machines.
    We've been messing with VPP up to this point, but honestly I'm not impressed with the way it works with OSX devices. I can enroll a machine into Profile Manager via trust certificate and the management profile. This works fine, and I can group the machines in logical order. According to the documentation, I should be able to deploy apps to the workstations themselves (independent of who is using it), but so far it doesn't seem to work like that.
    With a free VPP app, such as Garageband, in Profile Manager, I can only see where I can associate it with a user or user-group. I see two options with this. First, we use a common app-store credential to associate with the VPP apps. This seems like a poor option since a user wouldn't necessarily know the password to this account, and as soon as the app has an update, they are going to call us to login as the common app-store credential that owns the VPP app. Second, we associate the app to a user him/herself and let them do the installing or updating. This also assumes that our users sign up for an app-store account if they don't already have one (kind of weak, IMO).
    With these two, any common area/lab machines would obviously need a shared admin accessible VPP app-store ID, but with user-specific machines, I see it the other way. If I could target all of these machines without involving the users, that would be optimal. Given these three options (target user, target shared app-store account with manual admin intervention on each machine, target machine independently of a user), what do you all recommend?

    I will give my .02 on this topic.  I hope this helps.
    App distribution for Apps from the AppStore is a tricky mine field.  The new VPP program is a step in the right direction and for many businesses it is a dream come true (no more redemption codes, transfer of assets, European Union tax issues, I can go on...).  However, I will agree with you in regards that education does not benefit as much, especially when (1) the students do not have an Apple ID, (2) the devices are not deployed in the one-to-one model, and (3) users are not permitted to alter machine configurations.
    VPP for enterprise is a good thing, provided your organization is willing to allow user's the freedom to add content (an use Apple IDs).  The way it works is as follows.
    • You enroll in the VPP program
    • You purchase apps/books in bulk through the app store
    • You configure your MDM to participate in the VPP
    • You invite your users using an email or via push notification if devices are already enrolled
    • When the user gets the invite, the user uses her own Apple ID to associate their App Store catalog with your enterprise App Store catalog (this all happens on Apple's servers)
    • The enterprise does not care nor does it need to know which Apple ID the user used.  This is irrelevant to the organization.
    • You then assign the apps and books to the users through your MDM
    • The user now sees this content in their App Store from their device
    • If the user leaves the organization, you can remove the app from the user and you recall the seat into the available pool.
    • The App remains on the device for 30 days I believe and the user (if this is a personal device and they still have it after being removed from the program) will be prompted to purchase the app (books are transferred - you can not pull them back).
    So, all that being said, you are not deploying to an enterprise and you are not deploying to dedicated devices.  I suspect that some of your users may also be too young to have an Apple ID.  So while I still recommend that you participate in the VPP to ensure software compliance, the reality is that you are likely going to use a single Apple ID to download the software.  This will be included in a master build when imaging and prepping machines.  If there are updates, you will download the update onto a build machine and use tools like ARD, JAMF, Deploy Studio, etc to push the app out to your fleet of machines.  Keep in mind that updates from the App store are full versions and they are self contained bundles.  Also, turn off all software update notifications on the workstations to keep users from realizing updates are available.
    I am a firm believer that schools should not apply updates to machines between September and June unless it is a tested security patch.  The risk of impacting the educational process is too great.  Look no further than the dramatic changing in the iLife and iWork tools.  Changing mid year can cause entire curricula to be disrupted.  There is no deeper wrath than that of a school matriarch dressing you down because you put out software that does not match her lesson plans.
    Ok, I am done on the soap box.  Hope this helped.  My suggestion again is stick with the VPP for compliance reasons but use distro tools to push the updated/new apps out to machines as needed.  This allows you to continue to use a single Apple ID, the account information is obscured from the user, and all updates happen via a distro push, avoiding touching each machine.

  • NewGL Rollup still relevant or enhanced with Simple Finance?

    Hi Gurus,
    I am studying the implementation of Simple Finance and wonder whether the NewGL rollups are still relevant?
    My requirement is to agregate, transform and control data before transfer to the consolidation plateform.
    Do you know if there is any enhanced or new solution that can fulfill this requirement?
    If I can use the same function, do you know if it has been developped on Hana DB and benefit from Hana capabilities?
    I try to find detailed help documentation about Simple Finance (custo & functional) but I am not sure to find the good one, could you help me finding it.
    Best regards
    Pascal

    Hi Pascal,
    here is the link to the documentation for the Simple Finance add-on 1.0: http://help.sap.com/sfin100
    For your requirement of aggregation and transformation prior to transfer into consolidation, we still recommend using the "classical" approaches of roll-up ledger, extraction to SAP Business Warehouse, or SAP Financial Information Management.
    Best regards,
