UI performance testing of pivot table

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone could direct me to a tool that I can use to do performance testing on a pivot table. I am populating a pivot table(declaratively) with a data source of over 100,000 cells and I need to record the browser rendering time of the pivot table using 50 or so parallel threads(requests). I tried running performance tests using JMeter, but that didn't help.
This is what I tried so far with JMeter:
I deployed the application in the integratedweblogicserver and specify the Url to hit in JMeter ( http://127.0.0.1:7101/PivotTableSample-ViewController-context-root/faces/Sample) and added a response assertion for the response code 200. Although I am able to hit the url successfully, the response I get is a javascript with a message that says "This is the loopback script to process the url before the real page loads. It introduces a separate round trip". When I checked in firebug, it looks like request redirect of some sort happens from this javascript to another Url (with some randomly generated parameters) which then returns the html response of the pivot table. I am unable to hit that Url directly as I get a message saying "session expired". It looks like a redirect happens from the first request and then session is created for that request and a redirect occurs.
I am able to check the browser rendering time of the pivot table in firebug (.net tab), but that is only for a single request. I'd appreciate it if anyone could guide me on this.
Thanks
Naveen

I found the link below that explains configuration of JMeter for performance testing of ADF applications(Although I couldn't find a solution to figure out the browser rendering time for parallel threads).

  • Excel Pivot Table with Date Hierarchies - query performance degradation

    For the sake of this explanation, I’m going to try and keep it simple. Slicing the data by additional dimensions only makes the issue worse. I’ll keep this description to one fact table and three dimensions. Also, I’m fairly new to SSAS Tabular; I’ve worked
    with SSAS Multidimensional in the past.
    We’ve got a fact table that keeps track of bill pay payments made over time. Currently, we only have about six months of data, with the fact row count at just under 900,000 rows. The grain is daily.
    There is an Account dimension (approx. 460,000 rows), with details about the individual making a payment.
    There is a Payment Category dimension (approx.. 35,000 rows), which essentially groups various Payees into groups which we like to report on: Automobile Loan, Mortgage, Insurance, etc.
    There is the requisite Date dimension  (exactly 62093 rows-more days than we need?), which allows visibility as to what is being paid when.
    Using this DW model, I’ve created a SSAS BISM Tabular model, from which Excel 2010 is ultimately used to perform some analysis, using Pivot Tables. In the tabular model, for easier navigation (doing what I’ve always done in SSAS MultiDimensional), I’ve created
    several Date Hierarchies, Year-Month, Year-Quarter-Month, etc.
    There are currently only two measures defined in the Tabular model: one for the “Sum of PaymentAmount”; one for the “PaymentsProcessed”.
    OK, in Excel 2010, using a Pivot Table, drag the “Sum of PaymentAmount” measure to the Values section, next to/under the PivotTable Field List. Not too exciting, just the grand total of all Payments, for all time.
    Drag the “YearMonth” hierarchy (from the Date dimension) to the “Column Labels” section. After expanding the year hierarchy to see the months, now the totals are for each of the months, for which we have data, for June through November, 2013.
    Drag the “PaymentCategory” (from the Payment Categories dimension) to the “Report Filter” section. Filter accordingly: We just want to see the monthly totals for “Automobile Loans”.
    Now, some details. Drag the “AccountSK” (hiding the actual account numbers) to the “Row Labels” section. This shows all accounts that have made Automobile Loan payments over the last six months, showing the actual payment amounts.
    So far, so good. Remember, I’m using a Date Hierarchy here, in this case “YearMonth”
    Now, if any of the other attributes on the Account dimension table, say “CreditScore”, or “LongName”, are subsequently dragged over to the “Row Lables” section, under the “AccountSK”, the results will never come back, before timing out or by giving up and
    pressing ESCape!
    If this exact scenario is done by removing the Date Hierarchy, “YearMonth” from the “Column Labels” and replace it with “Year” and “MonthName” attributes from the Date dimension, these fields not being in any sort of hierarchy, adding an additional “Account”
    attribute does not cause any substantial delay.
    What I’m trying to find out is why is this happening? Is there anything I can do as a work around, other than what I’ve done by not using a Date Hierarchy? Is this a known issue with DAX and the query conversion to MDX? Something else?
    I’ve done a SQL Profiler trace, but I’m not sure at this point what it all means. In the MDX query there is a CrossJoin involved. There are also numerous VertiPaq Scans which seems to be going through each and every AccountSK in the Account dimension, not
    just the ones filtered, to get an additional attribute (About 3,600 accounts which are “Automobile Loan” payments.).
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks! Happy Holidays!

    Thanks for your reply Marco. I've been reading your book, too, getting into Tabular.
    I've set up the Excel Pivot Table using either the Year/MonthName levels, or the YearMonth hierarchy and then adding the additional attribute for the CreditScore.
    Incidentally, when using the YearMonth hierarchy and adding the CreditScore, all is well, if the Year has not been "opened". When this is done, I suspect the same thing is going on.
    From SQL Profiler, each of the individual MDX queries below (formatted a bit for readability).
    Thanks!

  • Showing Active tests in a pivot table

    Hi,
    If I wanted to recreate the standard Test Plan Progress report in an Excel pivot table what Pivot table fields are required?  I cannot get the tests that were never run to show in my pivot table - what am I missing?  In Test Manger the
    tests that are not run are flagged as "Active" but I can't not find the equivalent state in the Pivot table fields.  Is the state "never run", as shown in the  Test Plan Progress report, the same as "Active"
    in Test Manager?
    Cheers
    Dave

    Test Plan Progress

    Hi dsw850,
    For the test plan process report in the excel, we could add the necessary fields to the report from PivotTable Fields. The required fields are based on the detail requirements.
    Base on my test, I found that the Active state (In mtm) are mapped to the
    Never run (In report). We could check the Outcome field (Test Result) in the PivotTable Fields to check the detail state of each test case result. It contains the history state.

  • Can numbers perform pivot tables

    can you create pivot tables on numbers the same way you can with excel?

    No no pivot tables in numbers.... however...
    Pivot tables are generally a fast method of using functions already existing to perform summarization, therefore even though they do not exist as an automatic function in numbers, you can use the basic CountIF, SumIF, etc... functions in a table you make to perform the same functionality. This has been done by many of us over the years and it works fairly well. You lose some of the "pivot" ability and no drag and drop. so it takes a little more planning beforehand.

  • Performing a specific calculation in a pivot table with BI Publisher 10g

    I am using BI Publisher 10g and new on it and I need to integrate a specific calculation measure in a pivot table
    The logic uses two measures that already exist in the report (Demand & PAB) and the required calculation is represented by a new measure/row (Calculated). The pivot time is in weeks
    Week w0     w1     w2     w3     w4     w5 .....
    Demand     d(w0)     d(w1)     d(w2)     d(w3)     d(w4)     d(w5) .....
    PAB     p(w0)     p(w1)     p(w2)     p(w3)     p(w4)     p(w5) .....
    Calculated     c(w0)     c(w1)     ....     ....     ....     c(w5) .....
    If p(w0) < d(w1) --> then c(w0) = p(w0) / d(w1)
    If not
    If p(w0) < d(w1) + d(w2) --> then c(w0) = p(w0) / ( d(w1) + d(w2) ) * 2
    If not
    If p(w0) < d(w1) + d(w2) + d(w3) --> then c(w0) = p(w0) / ( (dw1) + d(w2) + d(w3 ) ) * 3
    If not
    etc .... Same logics apply for c(w1) and so on
    Is such calculation logic achievable in Bi Publisher ? If yes, how would you do it ?
    Thanks for your time and support on this

    Can you use the logic that you specified in the data model (query) to generate the required data and then use it in the pivot table? That would be the easiest way to do it. Tweaking the code to include the conditional logic/calculated measures is not going to be straightforward..

  • Pivot tables causing problems in Excel 2013

    I have a couple of issues I have been able to replicate on multiple machines (all running Office 2013 either as standard or as part of a 365 sub. 3 running W7 and one on W8.1)
    Whenever I load certain sheets with pivot tables, I can refresh data on them and that all works OK, but if I show the "Field List" bar on the right, Excel grinds to a halt and will not accept any input. Another, possibly related, issue is on some
    (not on all the ones with the first issue though) I use freeze panes. When refreshing the ones with this active, the screen flashes rather a lot and only stops when I turn off Freeze Panes.
    Have tried various fixes such as setting Windows to "Best Performance", disabling Hardware Acceleration in Excel, disabling addins (it does the same things using /safe) and recreating the file from scratch (this works the first time I use it, but
    then if it gets opened in 2007 Excel, then opened again in 2013, the issue comes back again), disabling animations with a registry tweak and renaming the OSF.dll file.
    Have checked and am running latest update of Office 2013 (currently 15.0.4675.1002).

    Hi,
    Based on the issue description, the problem occurs when setting a print area. Are you using the same printer with the multiple PCs? I notice this issue has reproduced on multiple machines. I'm wondering whether the printer driver caused the
    crash issue. I recommend we update the printer driver to test.
    Then, the crash can be caused by various factors, such as anti-virus programs, other programs that conflicts with Excel. If the problem persists after updating the printer driver, I suggest you perform a selective startup to determine whether
    a program, process, or service conflicts with Excel, please refer to Method 8 in this kb below:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2758592/en-us
    Other methods in this kb are also suggested to troubleshoot the problem.
    If this issue still exists, please collect the Event log and app crash dump file to do further troubleshooting.

  • Can any one tell how to create pivot table

    Hi ,
    Am trying to create a pivot tabel in the MDM Import Manager. Iam able to see the preview of the pivot table which i want to create. But when i try to click "OK" button, an error message getting displayed like...
    "The new table cannot be created because the data source is not updatable.You may need the data source to an updatable format such as Microsoft Access before proceeding".
    Due to the above error am not able to create pivot table, plz let me know if any one know how to solve this problem
    Thanks & regards
    Praveen k

    Hi Praveen ,
       The solution to your problem is -
    The data source must be updateable in order for MDM to
    create the new pivot or reverse pivot table. However, you can still
    perform the steps leading up to table creation – including the preview –
    even on a data source that is not updateable, so that you can explore
    pivoting or reverse pivoting as a transformation option. If you then
    decide you want to actually create the new table, convert the data
    source into a format that is updateable (such as Microsoft Access) and
    perform the pivot or reverse pivot on the new data source.
    To create a pivot table, you must identify the source fields that
    participate in the pivot, which ones contain metadata and which ones
    contain data, which ones must be combined, the one-to-one
    correspondence between metadata and data fields and/or field
    combinations, and the key field or fields.
    To create a pivot table:
    1. In the drop-down list of source tables, make sure the table you want to
    pivot is the current source table.
    2. In the Source Hierarchy tree, select all the field nodes corresponding to
    both the metadata fields and the data fields by which you want to pivot.
    3. Right-click on one of the nodes and choose Create Pivot Table from the
    context menu, or choose Source > Create Pivot Table from the main
    menu
    4. MDM opens the Create Pivot Table dialog
    5. In the Key Fields dual-list drop-down control, move one or more fields
    from the Available Fields list to the Selected Fields list to identify the
    key fields on which to perform the pivot
    6. In the dual-list control of fields, drag-and-drop the data fields from the
    Field Values Become Field Names list to the Field Values Become
    Field Values list
    7. If necessary, select two or more fields in either list that must be
    combined into a field combination, and click on the Combine button, or
    right-click on one of the fields and choose Combine from the context
    menu
    8. If necessary, drag-and-drop fields or field combinations within each list
    to create the one-to-one correspondence between metadata fields and
    data fields.
    9. Click on the Preview button to display a preview of the first ten records
    of the pivot table
    10. When you have verified that the pivot operation you have defined will
    have the desired effect, click OK to close the Create Pivot Table dialog.
    11. The MDM Import Manager creates a new table named “table <Pivot>”
    in the data source (where “table” is the name of the original source
    table).
    12. In the drop-down list of source tables, select the newly created pivot
    table on which to perform subsequent import processing.
    Hope that helps ...

  • How to update ADF VO object to refresh the data in ADF Pivot table

    I need to know how to update the View object so that the date in pivot table is refreshed/updated/filtered.
    here are the steps I performed to create ADF pivot table application using VO at design time.
    1) created a collection in a Data Control (ViewObject in an ApplicationModule) that provides the values I wanted to use for row and column labels as well the cell values (Used the SQL query)
    2) Dragged this collection to the page in which wanted to create the pivot table
    3) In the pivot table data binding editor specified the characteristics of the rows (which attribute(s) should be displayed in header), the columns (likewise) and the cells.
    Now, I have a requirement to update/filter the data in pivot table on click of check box and my question is how to I update the View object so that the date in pivot table is refreshed/updated/filtered.
    I have got this solution from one of the contact in which a WHERE clause on an underlying VO is updated based upon input from a Slider control. In essence, the value of the control is sent to a backing bean, and then the backing bean uses this input to call the "filterVO" method on the corresponding AppModule:
    but, I'm getting "operationBinding" object as NULL in following code. Please let me know what's wrong.
    here is the code
    Our slider component will look like
    <af:selectBooleanCheckbox label="Unit" value="#{PivotTableBean.dataValue}"
    autoSubmit="true" />
    The setDataValue() method in the backing bean will get a handle to AM and will execute the "filterVO" method in that, which takes the NumberRange as the input parameter.
    public void setDataValue(boolean value) {
    DataValue = value;
    BindingContainer bindings = getBindings();
    OperationBinding operationBinding = (OperationBinding)bindings.getOperationBinding("filterVO");
    Object result = operationBinding.execute();
    The filterVO method in the AMImpl.java will get the true or false and set the where Clause for the VO query to show values.
    public void filterVO(boolean value) {
    if (value != null) {
    ViewObjectImpl ibVO = getVO1();
    ibVO.setWhereClause("PRODUCT_TOTAL_REVENUE(+) where rownum < 10");
    ibVO.executeQuery();
    }

    Did you define a filterVO action in your pagedef.xml file?
    You might want to read on how to access service method from a JSF Web Application in the ADF Developer Guide for 10.1.3 chapter 8.5

  • Check if refreshing data in pivot table was finished

    Hello guys,
    This is my first post here so forgive if I'm asking in wrong place.
    Maybe you can help me or give me some hint how can I check if data in pivot tables refresh event was finished.
    So I'm using excel plugin that allows to load excel spread sheets from external source e.g application server,
    in this reports there are define some pivot tables with olap connections. When report is opened data is automatically refreshed,
    what I'm trying to do is somehow check if this refresh was finished and start manipulating data in c# but I'm not able to check
    if refresh was finished or it's still going.
    I found that query table has refreshing flag which indicates if some query is running. But I'm not able to get to querytable object or  to listobjects object, I'm using excel 2013 and only when I added sql database connection to sheet there was value
    in listobject object but still querytable was empty,
    What I'm doing wrong ?
    public void refrestTest()
    Excel.Sheets test= excelApp.ActiveWorkbook.Worksheets;
    foreach (Excel.Worksheet displayWorksheet in test)
    if (displayWorksheet.ListObjects.Count > 0)
    var pp1 = displayWorksheet.ListObjects.get_Item(1).QueryTable.Refreshing;

    Can you help me if is possible to create a pivottable binding to a one ViewObject and in code show/hide or compose the layout of the pivottable ??
    I search in google and OTN oracle and not find any code.
    Only find the code of the samples that is very complex for me , the code of the samples create the PivotTableModel from one Array , and i want to binding from one ADB BC ViewObject.
    Thanks in advance

    The solution I presented for your use case an DOAG 2013 was to create a pivot table binding out of user defined attributes from the table. For the defined attributes a VO is dynamically created as well as the pivot binding. The pivot binding is then exchanged at runtime together with the activation of the dynamic VO needed to only get the data needed for the particularly pivot table.
    Your solution using the CubicEditor is hard to implement due to the missing documentation. This was the reason I did not follow this approach, However it's not impossible (done it on a very small scale).
    None of the solution are what I call simple. They are complicated, complex and in part not supported solution (exchanging the pivot table binding at runtime need to use internal classes, which is not supported).
    I can't give you a working sample as it's too complex. I can make the slides available, however they are in German.

  • How to display the column into the narrative or section from pivot table

    I have a report. I have the basic number displayed in the pivot table, but missing one column and I need move one column to the top. The column missing (% of tested) should be calculated by column c /column F's last number, ie, F7=48. My desired column would be H3=c3/F48 9/48, H4=c4/F488/48.... But I could not get the number 48 into my formula, because it is the running total of the all column E. These data is in Pivot table.
    I also need display No of Students 74 in the top of the report. I am not able to get this number from pivot table. It is count distinct on student key from the repository.
    I appreciate any help.

    I wish it was this easy. I must not explain it right. All the score from each student and each question for each subject and each test is stored in database. The number of question for the subject is the max of the questions for each subject. Basically, it needs 'parittion by'... But in the OBIEE, it would not let me add any 'partition by' in the column formula. Is this true? ie, can you use partition by in the column formula? Here are the query from trace file.

  • Power Query; How do I reference a Power Pivot table from a Power Query query

    Hi,
    It's pretty awesome how you can define Extract Transform and Load processes within Power Query without having to type in a single line of code. However how do I reference a Power Pivot table from a Power Query query to avoid me repeatedly accessing
    the same data source (CSV) file with a view to increasing performance?
    We are aware of the reference sub menu option with Power Query. However the new query created by the "reference" option still seems to refresh data from the data source (CSV) rather than just referencing the base query. Is this understanding
    correct? There does seem to be a lot of hard disk activity when re-running the new query which is based on a base query rather than a data source.  So we were hoping the new query would just need to reference the base query in memory rather than rescanning
    the hard disk. Is there any way to ensure that the reference query just rescans the base query in memory?
    Kind Regards,
    Kieran.

    Hi Kieran,
    This sounds like something to be suggested for a future release. At the present time, Power Query will always re-run the entire Power Query query when refreshed. The Reference feature is analogous to a SQL view whereby the underlying query is always re-executed
    when it's queried, or in this case refreshed. Even something like using the Power Query cache to minimise the amount of data re-read from the disk would be helpful for performance but the cache is only used for the preview data and stored locally.
    It would be a good idea to suggest this feature to the Power BI team via the feedback smiley face.

    Michael Amadi

  • Data Source path in Pivot Table changes to absolute on its own

    Hello.
    I have a .XLSX file, that was created long time ago (I don't even know in which Office version, but definitely not 2013), and maybe even was a .XLS file at first.
    So it's a 4 MB file with 16 Sheets and 8 Pivot Tables.
    All of the Pivot Tables use other sheets from the same file as Data Source.
    Data Source for some of them look like this: 'Sheet3'!$A:$E
    Everything is fine when I save the file, and open it from saved file.
    But as soon as I try to move the file elsewhere, or rename it, or email it - all Data Source paths change to something like this: '\Users\Sergii_Litnevskyi\Desktop\New folder\[FileName.xlsx]Sheet3'!$A:$E
    And it happens with all Pivot Tables. The problem is that it links to an old file path, where the file does not exist anymore. And it links to an external file, which is not what I want.
    If I Save As and select different path and filename - then it works fine. So it's a workaround for renaming and moving files, but not for sending them to other persons.
    I've read some threads, and people recommend disabling "Save external link values", but it does not help. It is already turned off in my office, but it keeps acting weird.
    So what I need is: Save the file, close it, rename it, move it to other place, send it over email as attachment. And then I want to have the same Data Source path in my PivotTables as I had before I saved the file. How can I do it?
    My Office version: Microsoft Excel 2013 (15.0.4454.1503) MSO (15.0.4517.1005) 32-bit

    Hi,
    According to your description, I suppose the issue may be caused by some reason.
    Do you link the outside data source?
    I think if the file moves the file elsewhere, or renames, or email,
    data source paths can’t be change.
    But, your data source paths add the absolute path.
    Do you link the outside data source?
    I recommend you zip the file and send it as Email attachment.
    If the issue exists, you may save as it in a new name and test it in another computer.

    I am pretty sure that I don't have any external links in the document.
    However, even if I did - why would it change Data Source path for all of the Pivot Tables, when I did not request it?
    I tried zipping it and sending to other person over email, but he got the file with changed data source paths.
    I can even record a short video to show what happens.
    Actually, I just did it. You can see the video here: http://screencast.com/t/qMBild3ck9b
    It is rather big - 23.8 MB.
    Let me explain what I showed there:
    I opened my original file. I showed that there are Pivot Tables, whose Data Sources are in the same file, on various other sheets.
    I showed this for all of the Pivot Tables in the document.
    I saved the file using Save As in a different folder and under a different name (TEST.xlsx).
    I then opened that saved file to show you that it is fine, and the Data Source path for one of the Pivot Tables is the same as it was in original file. It is the same for all of the other Pivot Tables.
    Then I closed, and simply renamed the file to TEST123.xlsx.
    Opened it, and first thing wrong - Security warning.
    Then I got ‘Cannot open PivotTable source file ….’ messages. And, as I showed, now all Data Source paths have been changed to full paths of the file, that was created by Save As (TEST.xlsx) from original file.

  • Sub Total value is empty in  parent child hierarchy pivot table

    Hi All,
    I am using obiee 11.1.1.6.2 in Test environment. Is it a known issue/bug for 11.1.1.6.2 to show empty/blank values for sub total when using parent child hierarchy pivot table. The sub total for parent value is showing but sub total for child value is coming blank. However, in 11.1.1.5.0, we do not have any issue with this.
    Is it a known bug in obiee 11.1.1.6.2?
    Thanks,
    Sushil

    Yes it is a known bug...
    Thanks.

  • How to convert row data into columns without using pivot table?

    Hello guys
    I have a report that has several columns about sales call type and call counts
    It looks like this:
    Calls Type Call Counts
    Missed 200
    Handled 3000000
    Rejected 40000
    Dropped 50000
    Now I wanna create a report that look like this:
    Missed call counts Handled Call counts Rejected Counts Drop counts Other Columns
    200 300000000 40000 50000 Data
    So that I can perform other calculations on the difference and comparison of handled calls counts vs other call counts..
    I know pivot table view can make the report look like in such way, but they cant do further calculations on that..
    So I need to create new solid columns that capture call counts based on call types..
    How would I be able to do that on Answers? I don't have access to the RPD, so is it possible to do it sololy on answers? Or should I just ask ETL support on this?
    Any pointers will be deeply appreciated!
    Thank you

    Thanks MMA
    I followed your guidance and I was able to create a few new columns of call missed count, call handled counts and call abandoned counts.. Then I create new columns of ave missed counts, ave handled counts and so forth..
    Then I went to the pivot view, I realized there is a small problem.. Basically the report still includes the column "call types" which has 3 different types of call "miss, abandon and handled". When I exclude this column in my report, the rest of the measures will return wrong values. When I include this column in the report, it shows duplicate values by 3 rows. It looks like this:
    Queue name Call types Call handled Call missed Call abondoned
    A Miss 8 10 15
    A Handled 8 10 15
    A Abandoned 8 10 15
    in pivot table view, if I move call type to column area, the resulted measures will become 8X3, 10X3 and 15X3
    So is there a way to eliminate duplicate rows or let the system know not to mulitply by 3?
    Or is this as far as presentation service can go in terms of this? Or should I advice to provide better data from the back end?
    Please let me know, thanks
