Unable to activate Windows 8.1 after system reset

I am working on an HP Omni computer for some friends of mine and I am having a bit of an issue.  I had to run a reset to fix an issue in Windows.  This reinstalled Windows from the restore partition on the hard drive.  After I did this and I started setting up their programs again, I got a message about activating Windows.  However, it tells me the key is invalid for activation.  There is no actual key to type in, this is a Windows 8 computer that I understand should have the key embedded in the BIOS, and should "just work" when I reinstall Windows.  It isn't, however, and I have no other key to type in to try.
HP support was absolutely no help, the first call they insisted I needed to call Microsoft, which I knew wasn't true, but I tried anyway.  They said I would need to contact HP.  So I tried again, this guy was more helpful, at least he tried to be, but he told me I would need to buy a new copy of Windows.  This is ludicrous, I restored from the restore partition, and there is no way I am buying another copy of Windows.  Does anyone have any ideas what I might need to do?  I work in IT and install Windows all the time, but this is the first time I am dealing with Microsoft's new activation method.  So far, I am not a fan.

Hi,
I don't work for HP.
I will request to have someone else take a look and see if anything can be done to help.

  • I am unable to activate my iphone 3gs after updating ios 6.1.3

i am unable to activate my iphone 3gs after updating ios 6.1.3?

The activation servers were down for a bit yesterday.
    Try again.
A SIM is required for activation. If problems continue, the two most common activation issues are the result of a hacked or jailbroken device.

  • Windows 8.1 will not activate on HP19-2113w after system refresh.

Everything was working fine on my PC.  Then the other day it crashed and said there was a disk error and that it had to scan the whole drive to find the error. It finished scanning, but windows 8.1 would not load sucessfully.  Therefore I did a system refresh thru HP recovery.  After doing that windows would start up normally, but I lost my activation.  When I tried to activate the response was "Key doesn't work try again later" or something like that.  Kept trying, no luck.  I thought it may have been an error with the system refresh, so I did the total system reset (after saving personal data).  Now I am having the same problem with activation, and If I try to navigate the normal way to the activation screen, the screen disapears.  I can get to activation using command prompt.   but key still does not work.  The key I am using I retrived from my BIOS data.  Also, I ran the refresh and reset from the origional hard drive partition.  I hope someone has a solution to this.  Thanks is advance Bill

  • Unable to Install Windows Server 2012 R2; system aborts and reboots after first blue Windows logo appears

System:  Dell PowerEdge sc1420 with dual xeon and Adaptec 2420SA SATA RAID (supported by OS); 10 GB memory (2x4, rank 2, organization x4, in DIMM1 & DIMM2; 2x1, registered, organization x8, in DIMM3 & DIMM4)
This computer is currently running Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise which was installed with no problems.
Objective: clean install of Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard on an otherwise unused RAID array disk set.
All attempts to boot from DVD result in loading of files (grey progress bar on bottom of screen), brief dark screen, then black screen with a blue windows logo for about 2 seconds and then a flash of about 10 lines of error notifications on a black screen
for about 1/4 second (unreadable), and then a reboot of the computer.
Coreinfo.exe confirms that cpus DO support NX and PAE; do NOT support VMX (virtual machine enhancements).
Attempts to run memtest.exe from boot disk tool-menu startup result in an error message that the memtest.exe file is corrupt.
Running memtest.exe from Windows 2008 R2 install disk results in all memory tests passed!
Attempted booting with multiple DVD's (some +R, some -R, all verified) burned from .iso.  These DVD's were used successfully to install Windows Server 2012 R2 on an HP Pavilion.  Also changed DVD drives just to rule out DVD hardware.
Running CHKDSK from Windows 2012 R2 on HP Pavilion shows no problems; running CHKDSK from Windows 2008 R2 on the Dell system on the same disks shows some problems.  Running checkdisk on the Windows 2008 R2 install disk from the Windows 2008 R2 installed
system shows no problems.  All disks burned and verified on same system.
Also attempted to boot from USB thumbdrive with copy of DVD on it.  Same results: system loads files then reboots at first Windows logo.  So that would rule out disk quality issues per se??
Started to try an upgrade rather clean install to see if any errors were announced.  None were announced as the system went through much of the process.  I aborted somewhere along the way before committing to the upgrade because 1) the most likely
outcome was it would not boot after install (I don't really need the practice in restoring); and 2) even if it did reboot, having a system that can't be repaired by booting the install disk is pointless.
All disks and raid arrays are recognized and usable by RAID controller card and by Windows Server 2008 R2.  Disks are within spec for use with Adaptec 2420SA (1TB @ 300).
Is VMX (aka VT-x) actaully required for ANY install even though Hyper-V is not intended to be used?  If so, it is too bad that the Microsoft system requirements (
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn303418.aspx ) don't make that clear.  And lack of VMX support really doesn't explain the memtest.exe "corruption" issue.
Or is it maybe something unique about the files on 2012 R2 disk (or disk image on USB) that are causing some problem with the chipset processing?  But why?
My vote would be for the latter of the issues, but I have no clue why or if it is remediable.  Suggestions?

So here is what I think is the final understanding of this problem:
First, one additional piece of important information:  The computer successfully moves into and through the Windows Boot Loader phase and succeeding phase ONLY for Windows 8.1 32-bit, but NOT for Windows 8.1 64-bit nor for Windows
    Server 2012 R2 (only 64-bit).
The Windows Boot Manager phase (which precedes the Windows Boot Loader phase) is either 32-bit or 64-bit (64 –bit for this case) and is loaded by the 16-bit stub program (Bootmgr) which starts in real mode.
Windows Boot Loader of course runs in either 32-bit or 64-bit (64 –bit for this case) according to the product being installed.
By inference, the essential problem is occurring in conjunction with the loading of a WIM file to start the Windows Boot Manager.
The boot manager starts ok and generally shows its essential screens (Windows Boot Manager; Advanced Boot Options) or proceeds to load files for transition into Windows startup in the succeeding Windows Boot Loader phase (that doesn’t “boot” but rather
loads the system).  This is best confirmed by the announced corruption of the memtest.exe file when selecting Windows Memory Diagnostic from the Windows Boot Manager Screen.
If allowed to continue loading files to pass control to the Windows Boot Manager, the type of abort and resulting immediate restart that occurs is that which you would associate with unhandled cpu exceptions (invalid instruction, memory out of range,
wild interrupt, etc.) that most of us have not commonly seen for 20 years (since beginning to use well behave OS’s from Windows NT 3.1 and on).
So, the problem obviously is due to a failure to properly mount the WIM file and/or properly access it (probably the latter) when running in 64-bit protected mode.
This is independent of the hardware on which the install disk is actually mounted (DVD or USB-flash), so it is NOT a hardware problem
    per se.
Since the WIM is mounted early in the process, Boot Manager may well have loaded it using BIOS routines to access the physical device on which it resides rather than loading 32-bit or 64-bit drivers of its own.
Hence, if the BIOS does not “mount” the WIM in a way that is later fully compatible with access from the 64-bit systems being loaded, it could cause apparent file corruption.
If it is only partially incompatible some functionality may appear quite usable (like loading files) until later detected.
This is vague on my part, because the exact nature of the incompatibility cannot be readily determined from the information available.
But the consequence is the same: the system cannot boot from the install disk, either for initial installation or repairs.
Incidental conclusion:  The 64-bit boot manager code for Windows Server 2008 does not exhibit this faulty behavior, but the 64-bit code for Windows Server 2012 does.
So the problem is not inherent with loading 64-bit server OS’s.
Expectations:  If the system were to be upgraded using the features of the install disk while running an installed OS, say Windows Server 2008 R2, it might well succeed and yield a fully functional system upgraded to Windows Server 2012
R2 (because the installed operating system is started from discrete files, not from a WIM file).
However, in order to perform a disaster recovery using Windows resources (such as image backups from Windows Server Backup), one would have to presumably boot from a Windows Server 2012 64-bit install disk or Windows Server USB recovery drive.
Of course we know that the Windows Server install disk will not boot and we can be fairly sure that the problem will migrate to any Windows Server USB recovery drive that is created.
My inspection of a Windows 7 System Repair CD shows that is based exclusively on boot.wim, not discrete files!
Of course a generated image for a WIM for Windows 2012 USB recovery drive
might not have the flaw that drives this behavior, but it probably would.
Problem conclusion:  A BIOS upgrade would be required for compatibility with Windows Server 2014 clean installation
and any maintenance; and none is available from the OEM.
Problem not resolved, but understood for future reference.
Thanks to Tim whose comments helped me focus my thinking.

  • Unable to install Windows 7 pro after restart by Boot Camp Assistant

    Hello,
I have an issue with installing windows 7 pro 64bit on my MBP 13" mid 2009.
    It has 500GB Samsung HDD.
I tried to install windows 7 on a boot camp partition with boot Camp assistant and also during the process, I
downloaded the driver helpers from apple website and burned it on dvd. after system restart, It starts to load windows
files and then asks me to give it the cd of drivers [ right after I select the country and language in the start of the setup ]
I tried to select the files of the cd [ which I burned by the boot camp assistant ] but it just keeps telling me there is
NO suitable driver matches my mac.
I have downloaded the genuine windows 7 and burned it on dvd.
Also I have Lion, Boot Camp 4.0.1
Can someone please help on this issue?
    Many thanks,

The partition table needs to be repaired.
That is why the guide asks to backup before you begin.
Try Lion Recovery and check health of all the partitions.
Sometimes repairing or try shrink and expand the partition.
But it is not uncommon for what happened to you to render the drive with smaller HFS and then require erase the drive in some cases and restore.
    Carbon Copy Cloner 3.4.2
    Cloning as a Backup Strategy
CCC is now able to also clone Lion's Recovery Partition as well.
Check partition table health in Lion's Disk Utility

  • Unable to activate Windows 7 automatically from KMS

    Hi
We use KMS in our environment to activate windows 7. But we have a set of windows 7 VM's that is not getting activated from KMS. When we manually do using SLMGR commands it gets activated. Kindly suggest
    Regards Sushain KApoor

    Hi,
Please take a look at the following article regarding KMS client activation:
    Configuring KMS Clients
Make sure the connection between the VMs and the KMS host is configured well.
By default KMS clients automatically attempt to discover KMS hosts. Auto-discovery can be disabled by manually assigning a KMS host to a KMS client. This action also clears the KMS host name from the KMS client’s cache. If auto-discovery is disabled, it
can be re-enable by running slmgr.vbs /ckms at a command prompt.

  • Windows not genuine after factory reset

    Hey guys,
So i have a Toshiba Satellite A505-S6005 that i have owned all 4 years of college. On sunday i restored my computer back to how it was when i bought it by pressing the 0 key on start up. I followed the on screen instructions and wiped everything to start fresh. Everything went smoothly and i was able to do all 200+ windows updates and my computer was working perfectly. Then on tuesday a window pops up saying that my windows is not genuine. I checked my system properties in the control panel and there its says under windows activation at the bottom "Status not available" and "Product ID: Not Available". So i go to the start menu and try to run "Activate Windows" and i recieve an error code 0xC0020012.
I attached a screen shot of the error message as well as my system properties to show the status is not available and no product ID available.
Please can someone help me with this issue.
    Thank you,

  • Freezes during "starting windows" message even after factory reset.

I've gone through diagnostic tests and they've shown it wasn't a hardware error. After a failed update to windows 10 my computer rolled back to windows 7. After the rollback when attempting to boot win 7 It froze and hung on the starting windows screen.  At first i was able to boot in safe mode and navigate the desktop and drivers, but after plenty of failed fixes i had to result to a factory reset with alienrespawn. After the factory reset the issue still persists, and i can no longer boot up in safe mode. When i do, it tries to do first time installation and says that i has to reboot in normal mode to complete first time config. My computer didn't come with a disk so i can't re-install windows 7, and factory reset dosen't seem to fix the issue. All I need is to resolve this issue so i can get back with a clean slate to upgrade to windows 10. Any ideas?

  • Unable to Activate iMessage on MacPro after adding new SSD

Just added a SSD to my Mac Pro - wonderful speed-up having only System, Apps Library and User Folders on the drive!
    Using Mountain Lion v 10.8.4
But Messages v 7.0.1 will no longer work.
On opening, it asks me to Enter Apple ID to activate iMessage.
It has pre-populated the Apple ID with my email address but when I enter the Password, it goes into cog-wheel mode and, after a delay, responds that it is unable to sign in asking me to check my network connection (it is working great for Mail, Safari etc)
I have double-checked the password (the same one allows me to enter the Apple Store and is effective on my Mac Book Pros. my iPhone & my iPad).
I used Clean My Mac to remove Messages (and its many folders), reinstalled Mountain Lion from a start-up flash drive I created, updated the system software and found a pristine version 7.0.1 of Messges in the Applications Folder.
But I still have the same problem.
    Appreciate any suggestions.
    ...John
PS iMessages works great on my iPhone & iPad.
Messages(v 7.0.1) works great on my Mac Book Pro (running 10.8.4)

This could be a complicated problem to solve, as there are many possible causes for it. Test after taking each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Back up all data before making any changes.
Before proceeding, test on another network, if possible. That could be a public Wi-Fi hotspot, if your computer is portable, or a cellular network if you have a mobile device that can share its Internet connection. If you find that iMessage works on the other network, the problem is in your network or at your ISP, not in your computer.
    Step 1
Check the status of the service. If the service is down, wait tor it to come back up. There may be a localized outage, even if the status indicator is green.
    Step 2
Restart your broadband device and your router, if different. You may have to skip this step if you don't control those devices.
    Step 3
    From the menu bar, select
     ▹ About This Mac
Below the "OS X" legend in the window that opens, the OS version appears. Click the version line twice to display the serial number. If the number is missing or obviously invalid, take the machine to an Apple Store or other authorized service center to have the problem corrected.
    Step 4
Back up all data, then take the steps suggested in this support article.
There are five steps in that article. Please take all of them. If you don't understand some of the steps or can't carry them out, ask for guidance.
    Step 5
    From the menu bar, select
     ▹ System Preferences ▹ Network
If the preference pane is locked, click the lock icon in the lower left corner and enter your password to unlock it. Then click the Advanced button and select the Proxies tab. If any proxy options are selected, make a note of them and then deselect them. You don’t need to change the bypass or FTP settings. Click OK and then Apply. Test. The result may be that you can't connect to any web server. Restore the previous settings if that happens.
    Step 6
    Reset the NVRAM.
    Step 7
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
If iMessage worked in the guest account, stop here and post your results.
    Step 8
Boot in safe mode and log in. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including Wi-Fi on certain iMacs.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and test again.
If iMessage worked in safe mode, but didn't work when you booted out of safe mode, stop here and post your results.
    Step 9
According to one anecdotal report, Flash Player may interfere with iMessage, though I don't know how and can't confirm. To test this theory, select from the menu bar
     ▹ System Preferences… ▹ Flash Player ▹ Storage
    and click
Block all sites from storing information on this computer
Close the preference pane. If this action solves the problem, please post your results.
    Step 10
    Reinstall OS X.
    Step 11
If none of the above steps resolves the issue, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or contact Apple Support.

    Hello!
It looks like your system is configured for ticket authentication. As you did a system copy the SSO-ticket might not be working anymore. If this is the case you need fix the SSO or you need to re-configure your Portal (at least temporarily) to allow other authentication methods (like basic password authentication).
You can configure the order of the authentication methods in VisualAdmin and set the 'levels' (Required/Sufficient/etc.) there as well.
    Hope this helps,

  • Unable to Activate Windows 2012 Data Center Evaluation Copy

I installed a Windows Server 2012 Data Center Preview Evaluation Copy.  I am trying to Activate it now so that it stops rebooting every hour.  I obtained the Activation Key for a Full Version and tried all of the following to activate it:
    1.  Ran the following from other posts using the 2012 Data Center Full Licence Product Key.
    DISM /online /Set-Edition:ServerDatacenter /ProductKey: XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX /AcceptEula
I get a "Windows cannot upgrade to the edition that was specified".  When I run the Get TargetEditions it says current edition cannot be upgraded to
    any target editions.
I also tried with the Product key for my Eval Version, as well as the DataCenter Standard.  None seem to work.
    2.  Called Microsoft and they tried to give me a CID.  This also did not work.
How can I activate this copy of Windows.  Is it possible?
if it is not possible, can you please advise on how to easily Reinstall and restore all my apps, registry settings, programs, firewall settings, network, etc.  I
have a lot running on this server and reinstalling everything is not an option. Is there some easy way to reinstall Windows 2012 Data Center FULL and just import all my settings?
    Any advice is appreciated.

As per Johan's earlier suggestion, it's unsupported to "convert" or "upgrade" from Preview -> RTM. I have not tried it personally, but I would expect the convert/upgrade to be blocked (but the messaging for that is likely to be vague/obscure,
since it is unsupported i.e. untested by MS)
The guidance from MS on this topic (as per the cited TechNet library links), is to perform a clean install.
Upgrades from pre-release versions of Windows Server 2012 (such as the Release Candidate) are not supported. Perform a clean installation to Windows Server 2012.
Your desire to backup the existing Preview installation may be able to be done in an offline scenario, e.g. boot the server from a Windows installation media, or a WinPE boot media of some kind.
With this backup saved to another disk, you could then try a clean install, and then import the VMs into the rebuilt server. I would not expect you to be able to preserve much else (installed applications etc).

Experts, we have modified the local policy setting on the windows server 2012 and badly it was domain controller now none of the users are able to login to the server. After entering the user name and password it will launch till welcome screen then it errors
out saying user name or password incorrect. below are the steps which we followed
    1. Policy setting is located in Computer Configuration\Security Settings\Local Policies\Security Options \Network security: Configure encryption types allowed for Kerberos values change from Not Configured to DES_CBC_MD5
    2. changed user attribute msDS-SupprtdEncryptionTypes to 2 , this account we were used for kerberos authentication.
    3. Logged off from the server and then server doesn't allow any user to login.
    regards,
    Jakk

Have you tried connecting to the server from a 2nd DC? Have you tried installing the RSAT tools on a domain member server and modify the offending policy ?
last choice would be restart the DC into safe mode.
