Unable to add printer after 10.4.8 update

Hello!
I updated to 10.4.8 (combo update) on a G5 Quad and lost my printer settings. When I tried to add the printer again, the only thing I get is an error message: "server-error-service-unavailable".
I'm using a HP Laserjet 2200 with a D-Link Ethernet switch, but also tried pluging the printer first using direct Ethernet then via USB (restarting each time). I always get the same error message, even when trying adding it with generic printer setting.
Everything worked just fine before the update. I tried repairing permissions, re-runned the update, but nothing changed.
May the printer manager be corrupted? Does anyone have the same problem? Any solution?
Thanks in advance!

I have seen and had a very similar problem with Lexmark E240 and 10.4.8, which is USB-only, not a network printer.
I ended up securing system preferences, blocking outbound sharing services - because I was seeing a large number of the Sharing Services and firewall rules open and allowed, and which I never started or allowed.
I have been basically "hitting my head against the wall" with Lexmark support, trying to see if they know anything, sending screen shots showing the error. (They basically said, use Guttenprint + CUPS.)
I even went back to the original OS I had archived (Mac Pro, 10.4.7 build) and was able. And it works now. But I added rules to my router to prevent both inbound AND outbound Windows Sharing, ARD, Remote Apple Events, etc. (all of these and more services were getting enabled, even ftp and remote login... so I logged everything and thought I had "an intruder" of sorts, or a worm).
To me, it was acting like the printer driver was going out and looking to see if there was a more current driver available... sort of like how Vista will look for any generic or "unsigned" driver.
I will say that I spent a lot of time, some of it *spinning wheels* and have been reluctant to try again with the router out of the picture. At one point I thought I was okay, but saw "Fax & Print" control panel automatically enable the "share this printer" at one point, so I now use the Security control panel to require password authorization for any changes.
Odd to read about your HP Laserjet causing the same error message.

  • Unable to add printer to printer list

    Hello everybody!
I'm unable to add a printer to the printer list. It's a HP Photosmart Plus B210a. I configured the printer without any difficulties (unpacking, installing ink, booting up, first run test prints, connecting it to the wireless network etc.). Now I want to add the printer to my Macbook Air (11", late 2010 version, Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard) via the wireless connection.
To do this, I go to the system settings, printers and faxing. Since I have no other printers installed, there's nothing to see there. I clikc the plus + to add a printer and it finds the Photosmart via Bonjour connection. All looks fine to this point (doesn't it?). The I click add and then software update asks if I want to download software. Clicking not now obviously doesn't add the printer, clicking install starts a search for software (after accepting Apple's terms). Software is found, downloaded and installed, but after the install, nothing happens! The install progress bar closes, but then I'm still in the add printer screen, where I can still see the Photosmart through Bonjour connection. In the printer screen, the printer lists remains empty! When I add the printer again, it wants to search for software again, but it's unable to find (I guess because it doesn't find newer software, since I now have the software installed already). It simply doesn't add the printer to the list.
Connecting the printer with a USB cable ends up the same: you install the printer, but it won't show up in the printer list. Installing again results in the same message that no software can be found.
I also tried downloading the software from HP. Installation works just fine, but after the installation the software want to configure the printer through the same add printer screen. There I end up the same way: adding the printer makes software update search. Now it finds a HP printer update, which installs just fine, but the printer simply is not added to the printer list. This is also confirmed by the HP configuration software: it detects that the wireless printer is not in the list. Installing via USB cable however, ends up in succesful installation (says HP configuration software), but no success: no printer available!!!
I can reproduce everything as many times as I like, by using the HP uninstaller that is installed with the download I installed manually. Then everything happens all over again, no matter what I try.
Does anybody know what kind of error this is? (there is no error message anywhere, only the notification from software update that it can't find new softare at the moment). Does anybody have experience with adding this particular printer, or any HP printer or any printer at all? Why can't I add my printer?
I think it's Apple related, not HP related. The printer works as it should (for what that's worth if you can't use it because your computer doesn't accept it). I can print through HP ePrint. This is not ideal, because it always prints the e-mail and attachment so it costs an extra page and a bit of ink. I just want to print simply by printing directly for my Macbook!
Any help is appreciated, I hope my problem is described with enough detail, but if you need more info, ask! I will provide.

Hi Niala... Before you go thru the hassle of reinstalling your operating system, please try installing Gutenprint for your Mac: http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/MacOSX.php
I just purchased a new EPSON printer today and couldn't add it to my printer queue (just like you): i kept getting an error message telling me that the driver was unavailable from Apple, and there was a Bonjour connectio problem somewhere.
Anyway: I downloaded the Gutenprint drivers, installed them and the next time I clicked on the [+] sign, everything went well.
Maybe it will work for you too. Definitely worth a try...
    Cheers!

  • Can't add printer since 10.8.5 update

When I press 'add printer' in 'system preferences/print & scan' it goes straight to the 'add' window, bypassing the dropdown/popup menu. When it goes to the add screen it doesn't have any printer there, though my other macs, which haven't been updated, do have all the printers there.
    Any fixes please?

It sounds like this Mac has an issue with Bonjour, which is the protocol used to advertise a printer on a network. To check Bonjour on the 10.8.5 Mac, on one of the Mac's that has not been updated, if you share one of the printers and then go back to the 10.8.5 Mac, does this shared printer appear in the Add printer window?
Or you can enable Bonjour in Safari preferences on the 10.8.5 Mac. If you set Bojour to appear in the Bookmarks Bar, then when you select this Bookmark any device on the network that is advertising itself using Bonjour should be listed.
If the shared printer does not appear in the Add printer window, nor does the actual printer appear in the Safari Bonjour view, then the next action would be to check there is a working network path between the 10.8.5 Mac and the printer. The best way to check this is to use the Ping function in Network Utility (Applications > Utility). This will require you to know the IP address of the printer, which you can often obtain via the control panel of the printer. Once you have the IP address you can enter this in the Ping pane of Network Utility and then press the Ping button. Each packet sent should get a response. If it does, then it proves there is a functioning path between the two devices. If there is no response to the Pings, then you have a network issue with this updated Mac.

  • Can't re-add printer after removing from eprint center - 'Web Services Problem'

I have an HP Photosmart Premium C310 series printer (Model Number CN503B) which I have been using with ePrint for about 18 months. Aside from intermittent issues it has worked, I use a chromebook most of the time so rely on the ePrint option via Google Cloud Print.
Last week it stopped working, with every job in the list showing as cancelled. Following advice on the forum I removed the email address of the printer from the eprint center. I thought it would then be simple to add the printer back. However, I have been unable to connect the printer to the web service so I cannot create the code I need to add the printer back.
    STEPS TO REPRODUCE:
    1. Factory reset printer settings
    2. Factory reset network settings
    3. Restart printer and Reboot router
    3. Settings -> Network -> Wireless Setup Wizard
    4. Choose correct SSID, enter password for WPA
    5. ‘Connected to Network’
    6. Settings -> Web -> Enable Web Services
    7. ‘Accept terms’ screen -> Accept
    8. ‘Checking for product updates’ screen shows briefly then returns to 'accept terms' screen
    9. Next it makes a ping sound and shows ‘Web Services Problem’ ‘Problem connecting to Web Services Server’, it then pings again a few seconds later (which ties in with what I see in the network logs as a second attempt)
    10. Log on to printer via web interface and set IP address of printer to manual IP outside DHCP range (as advice on other threads in this forum). Check DNS setting valid (same as gateway server which all other devices on network are also using successfully as DNS)
    11. Repeat steps 6 and 7 - still same error message
I consider myself technically savvy and have followed all advice I can find on this forum including the following:
    1. reverting to printer and network defaults
    2. rebooting router
    3. assigning static IP address to printer outside of DHCP range of router
    4. connecting to printer via web interface and setting DNS to variously: same as gateway, google DNS (8.8.8.8), ISP DNS
    5. adjusting firewall settings on router to explicitly allow and log outbound connection on the HP ports (already had a rule allowing all outbound connections)
As mentioned, the printer worked fine with ePrint previously so I suspect the ePrint server is rejecting a request from my printer for some reason, maybe because there is old / corrupt  data on the server regarding my specific printer.
I’m logging outbound traffic from the printer and here are what the router logs show me (printer IP replaced with 192.168.x.x below, even though it is not public )

Looks like both are HP sites: first is 'g4t2674.houston.hp.com' and the second secure one is ‘registration-pro-site2eprint.houston.hp.com’ which sound likely to be correct. That suggests the DNS is working but that the registration server doesn’t like the request for some reason.
I had the printer registered for Google Cloud Print but I have now deleted that also and it doesn’t seem to have made any difference (assume it just formats and forwards to the HP ePrint email anyway).
One hack that sheds some further light is to switch off wifi on the printer and then switch on ePrint. Eprint gives an error but stays set as 'on'. When I then switch wifi back on I can then at least check for product updates (it tells me I have the latest product updates). However, web services are still a 'no go'. Network traffic for that product update exchange looks like this:

So clearly the printer can communicate to those servers well enough to find it has the latest firmware.
I realise this is a lot of information but hopefully some of it is helpful for troubleshooting.
Thank you in advance for any help!

The issue disappeared this weekend. I didn't change anything so it must have been something server side. I notice others with the same issue have also seen it resolved.
Thanks to all those who contributed and tried to help out. Although disappointed I went for a long time without ePrint I'm glad that action was apparently taken to resolve in the end.

  • Unable to add printer

    Heya,
I'm trying to add a printer to an ibook g4 that is running 10.4 and am unable to do so. Everytime I go into "print & fax" and press the "+" sign it does nothing. I have never experienced this problem before and am not experiencing it with any of the other g4 laptops that I have. I am able to go in through, say, opening up MS Word and adding it through there but not directly through the system prefs route.
I have tried correcting permissions which did nothing. Right now, i'm at a loss and do not know what to do.
    Guidance would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Try these two things first:
Reset Printing System, a menu choice in Printer Setup Utility. Then restart and try adding.
Repair the Hard Drive (not permissions). Put in your install DVD and restart while holding the c key. DO NOT continue the installer - instead, find Disk Utility in the top (Finder) menus and use it to repair the hard drive. Then restart and try adding.

  • Cannot re-add Printer after Hard Drive became full

Hi, I hope someone can help us, we have a PowerBook G4 running 10.2.8 which we have been happily printing on our new Epson Stylus Photo R1800 for the past 3 months. A few days ago however, it looks like the Hard Disk became full during a particularly long printing run. The printer became 'stopped' and despite numerous restarts of the service and machine, would not start up again. There was an exclamation mark by the printer name.
In desperation we removed the printer from the Print Center, but upon trying to add it again (USB or Epson USB) we now get the message:
'An error occurred while trying to add the selected printers, Error -1'
Now I have been all over the place looking for an explanation of this error and the only reference to it out there was in the patch notes for 10.2.2. Here are some more facts:
    - The printer is working fine in OS 9 emulation mode on the same Mac.
    - The printer appears as a device when you plug the USB cable in.
Here is what we have tried so far:
    - Immediately freed up 3 gb of space on the drive
    - Rebooting
    - Uninstalling the Driver and reinstalling it
    - Downloading the latest driver from Epson (it downloads an aspx file that we can't do anything with)
    - Running the Disk Utility and repairing permissions
    - Verifying the CUPS service is running
    - Downloading the 3rd party Print Center Repair tool and running through all its tests (spool files, cups, permissions) apart from the full Print center reset option.
This has left me defeated and with two options left:
    - Go ahead and do the full reset of the Print Center, deleting our older Epson printer
    - Purchase and upgrade to Tiger 10.4 in the hope of blasting over the problem
I really hope someone can help us as my girlfriend is a graphic designer and has to get printing again as soon as possible!
    Thanks
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

If your getting almst any error when actually adding, the print center is not working correctly.
1)You will need to reset your print center
    2) Remove the com.apple.print files off your system and restart hoping it clears up the error. Even though apple does not list that fix for this printer specifically, it works sometimes.
    3) Re install the OS-- dont copy over, just do a full re install.

    (A)  When I click "Print Information Sheet" on the HP Web Services tab/ "Web Service Setup" to obtain my printer's email address to use in the claim code box...NOTHING HAPPENS.  No claim code, No email address

Seems that HP is not supporting your printer, it is written on the specs that it supports but in fact its not the case!!!

  • Cannot Print to Windows Printer after Security 2008-002 update

I am unable to print to a Canon image runner 3380 printer on a Windows network after installing Security update 2008-002. Whenever I try to print I get the following error: On Hold Authentication Required. I can click on the Resume button in the print queue and a box pops up to enter my username and password. I've tried entering my user name and password but it does no good. I've also tried reinstalling the printers which also does me no good.
This printer is located on a Windows 2003 server that is setup as a Domain Controler.

I did some searching -- more info: This is apparently due to an upgrade to CUPS, which is the Common Unix Printing System (available to administer directly at: http://localhost:631/ ) This is the way to add a printer if you feel especially geeky.
    There is another discussion: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6914585&#6914585
about this, but apparently it is not a resolution, just a description of the problem.
So, I really don't want to deinstall the 2008-002 update, if I can help it. I already installed version 1.1, which did not resolve the issue. I would like to be able to print to my Windows-Active Directory printers without resorting to IP printing. It sounds like this is something Apple has to fix, from the discussions I read. Is this true? And if so, any ideas about how long Apple will take to fix it?

  • Can't Print after 10.5.8 update - HP 6310 + G5

I updated the G5 to 10.5.8 last night. Can't print today.
Everything is plugged in and connected.
    The printer was "published."
    I reset the printing services.
The printer no longer shows up as an option to add in the Preferences pane.
    HP has no updated drivers.
Here is the error code that was on the published page:
"fatal: Opening Printer Connection Failed: Unable to open the printer connection. Please check your printer connections and check for printer errors."
When connected directly to the printer, the MacBook (10.5.6, Intel) CAN print.
Sounds like 10.5.8 broke something... Any suggestions?
    TIA =)

I have the same issue, any application collapse when trying to print a document.
Sympthoms are: In Safari, Pages, Preview, anything, by going to File -> Print
the result is the application hang automatically launch the crash report, to send back to apple.
I first tried 2 days ago with the Software Update containing the HP Printing Drivers Update and anything happen.
My second attemp was the security update of this morning and anything happen.
Finally I followed the pragmatic approach of removing my HP PSC 1510 All in one printer from the System Preferences -> Print & Fax and then to add it again. It automatically selects the version 5 of the printing driver and after that single delete / add operation looks like I can print again from all applications.
I am really not sure if this will work with other printers, or in a shared environment, the funny thing was, that I could not print from my MacPro Server but I could print through my MacBook Pro laptop sharing the printing attached to the server. Terrible slow but it could print.
I hope this tip can help somebody.

  • Epson R280 printer won't print after Apple Epson driver update

I have a 27" iMac running Mountain Lion. I use an Epson R280 printer to print directly onto CD/DVD media. Have used this printer daily for over three years. After an Apple Epson Driver update, I get a 'communication error' message and cannot print. Uninstalled and reinstalled printer. Power cycled printer and rebooted iMac. No Change. Hooked up same printer to my MacBook Pro running Mavericks and printer works. Ideas?

Thanks, Eric. I had tried that previously, but had no luck. I would add the printer back in after Reset, and it still didn't work. The real key step which I found from a previous solution was taking the existing print drivers in Library/Printers/Epson and trashing that folder and then emptying the trash. With those drivers gone, when I rebooted and then powered up and added the printer, Apple prompted me to download new drivers, and 'Voila!'. Back up and running. Thanks much.

  • Deskjet F4235 doesn't print after Windows 8.1 update and subsequent updating of HP software

Updated Windows 8.1 software.  Afterwards when I went to print, received a message that the HP software needed to be reinstalled.  Printer still worked at that point--but there were problems.  Couldn't scan from the printer; had to do it from the computer.  When I realized it wouldn't duplex print, I decided to do the reinstallation.  After many screens, etc., the HP printer diagnostics told me that there was a problem it couldn't solve.  I went to HP support, software and drivers; nothing helped there.  Now my printer doesn't work at all.  I have USB.  Can anyone shed light on this?  Thank you so much.  ~J

  • Printing after 10.6.8 Update

Hello.  I've searched around for this problem and while I've found some that are similar, I haven't been able to find an answer.  I'm hoping someone can help me.
I work at a high school, and we have a HP Laserjet M2727nf printer that is attached to an iMac with USB (the network card went out twice and we didn't have the money to fix it again).  This iMac is running 10.6.4 and many teachers are connecting successfully to the printer using Bonjour.  However....One secretary with administrative privileges on her iMac decided to run updates the other day and updated to 10.6.8.  Now she cannot print to that printer.  She gets a message saying "usr/libexec/cups/backend/dnssd failed".  I looked around and tried the following:
    1.  copying 4 files from the iMac running 10.6.4. (dns, lpp, socket, and lpd) to the one running 10.6.8 - didn't work
    2.  Running a "fix" script I found online - didn't work
    3.  Tried to connect using the IP address of the 10.6.4 iMac and the queue name - didn't work
I am hesitant to update the 10.6.4 iMac to 10.6.8 since so many other people are connecting to it successfully.  I could probably just wipe our her iMac and start over, but she has all of her files saved locally so it would be a process.  I am new to the Mac world, so I'm just wondering if there IS a way to share a printer using an IP address instead of Bonjour and if so, what the steps are?  Or if anyone else has this trouble after an update?  Or if there are any other ideas?  She currently is printing to another printer, but I'd really like to be able to get this working.  Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks for your time!

Okay, so I had some time to tinker with this today.  I downloaded the new combo update, deleted the printer, installed the combo update and restarted the iMac.  When it came back on, I added the printer back.  I then went to Software Update, but there were no printing updates listed.  I went to print a test page and got the following message when I looked at the print queue:
    "on hold (authentication required)"
When I looked further, it popped up the original error of "usr/libexec/cups/backend/dnssd failed"
However, no matter what I do, I can't get anything to come up to allow me to enter a username and password.  The only thing I can possibly think is that it's something with the keychain, but as I said I'm new to Macs and don't really know much about that.  Can I run First Aid on the keychain without messing anything up?  Or would you look elsewhere?  This message is only on her machine, everyone else can print to the printer without issues.  So it has to be related to the 10.6.8 update as well.
